Out with the defence-first old, in with the all-out-attack new?

That’s the simplistic (and not inaccurate) reading of the managerial change at Nottingham Forest following Monday’s dismissal of Nuno Espirito Santo.

In his place comes Ange Postecoglou, back in the Premier League after his two-year stint at Tottenham Hotspur ended in June.

In this piece, we ask what the first managerial casualty and hire of the season means for Fantasy managers.

We’ll not rehash the potted history that we included in our Scout Report two years ago; Postecoglou is not the relatively unknown quantity of before.

Instead, we’ll focus more on his time at Spurs.

ANGE: THE SPURS YEARS – AN OVERVIEW

2023/242024/25
Goals scored74 (7th)64 (7th=)
Goals conceded61 (7th=)65 (16th)
Clean sheets7 (12=)6 (16th)
xG68.95 (6th)59.70 (9th)
xG conceded64.55 (14th)64.36 (17th)

In summary: goals and lots of them!

Spurs both scored and conceded 60+ goals in each of Postecoglou’s two seasons at the helm.

The expected goals at either end (xG/xGC) are in the 60-70 ballpark, too. In the top half for xG in each year, the Lilywhites were in the lower reaches of the table for xGC.

Clean sheets-wise, Spurs didn’t get more than seven in either campaign.

NUNO: THE FOREST YEARS – AN OVERVIEW

2023/24*2024/25
Goals scored32 (12th=)58 (9th=)
Goals conceded37 (9th=)46 (6th=)
Clean sheets1 (18th=)13 (2nd=)
xG31.52 (9th)46.57 (15th)
xG conceded27.75 (4th)49.56 (9th)

*from Gameweek 18 onwards, the point of Nuno’s appointment

Nuno’s Forest were almost a mirror image.

The clean sheets didn’t materialise in his first half-season in charge but the underlying data was there: they ranked fourth for xGC from Gameweek 18 (Nuno’s first game as head coach) of 2023/24.

The Tricky Trees followed that up by finishing joint-second for clean sheets in 2024/25.

As for goalscoring, 58 was a decent tally last season. But Forest massively overachieved (+11.43) on the xG front, relying on ruthlessness – especially from Chris Wood (£7.7m) – rather than a high volume of chances created.

THE XG RACE: NUNO’S FOREST V ANGE’S SPURS

Worth making this double-transfer for free or nah?

    RAN + Richy -> Senesi + Pedro

Both seem like great assets so far, on the fence on whether to pull the trigger or hold for now.

    Thanks!

Completely agreed, and that's what makes it hard. Would you rather take Richy vs WH or Pedro vs Brentford?

First instinct I wanted to say Pedro, but it is closer than that, and I can't separate them this week, assuming they play around 70 minutes plus.
Id stick with whoever I had and save a transfer for something I was more sure on down the line. We'll have a lot more info after GW4, you may not even want Pedro by then.

Damn that’s a bizarre one. Nuno Espirito is greater than fat ange imo. Last season NFO were placed 7th in the league while Spurs were 17th…further stats like H2H, Goals conceded, win ratio etc. will probably be in Nuno’s favor.

    Hi all

Would you expect Cunha (MAN UTD) to drop tonight?

Fantasy football fix say he's dropping tonight, however Hub & Livefpl say he's nearing a drop. More likely 2 days.

Who should i trust more on this please?

No Mount, no Cunha. Id play RAN. Feels like a 0-0 on the cards in Manchester.
Brentford at home should be good for a goal, even 5 at the back WH got a goal against them earlier.

Despite a very good start to the season (200k, all chips intact) my defence is a mess. Who should I transfer out this week for Munoz?

    A: Lewis
    B: Dorgu

I know it's likely both will struggle with gametime, and I have to get rid of both in the long run.
    Money no problem (5m itb).

    1. Haa-lala-land
      • 5 Years
      10 months, 5 days ago

This is a tricky one. I think I'd get rid of Dorgu first. You don't want a player that's at risk of being rested in the 'easier' games like he was at Burnley
There's not too many good looking fixtures on the horizon for Man Utd, and perhaps Lewis will get a start home to Burnley in GW6 should you still have him by then

I seem to remember when Big Ange first took over at Spurs, the defence kept a few clean sheets in the beginning until injuries occured to VDV and Romero?

I may include Murillo on my WC. He seems like a good fit on the for Ange ball, marauding from the halfway line towards goal and shooting non stop.
