Scout’s General Manager and one half of FPLFamily, Sam, has her Wildcard active. Here she discusses why she is going without Mohamed Salah (£14.5m) ahead of Gameweek 6.

Every Wildcard has a different conundrum. This one is no different.

On Sunday, when I hit the button, I didn’t expect this one to be about whether to stick or twist on Mohamed Salah (£14.5m). Over the last five seasons or so, Salah has pretty much been an ever-present in my team. Unless the Egyptian has been away at AFCON or injured, he has been in my team. Not having him always feels like a risk I have been unwilling to take.

When I first hit the Gameweek 6 button, and even despite a difficult start to the season, his inclusion felt like a non-negotiable. I had both Salah and Erling Haaland (£14.3m) and, as a result, there were some compromises, but this felt like the right strategy for me.

Fast forward to 9:47pm or thereabouts on Tuesday evening and Hugo Ekitike (£8.7m) whipping off his shirt. His red card and subsequent suspension means that suddenly things felt a little different. Rather than being tied to the £28.8m I was investing in Salah and Haaland, it felt possible to go earlier on a player that I already knew I would want at some stage.

Isak time?!

FPL notes: Salah bites back, Palmer's groin + Slot on Isak

When Alexander Isak (£10.5m) eventually made the move from Newcastle to Liverpool, I knew eventually I would want him. It all just felt like a question of time.

The easing of the Liverpool forward back to match fitness as a result of his missed pre-season has delayed this. Isak is yet to start in the Premier League; in fact, the forward has only played 23 league minutes for Liverpool. However, he has started in both the Champions League and League Cup. The way the rotation was falling, I was expecting Ekitike to start in Gameweek 6, with Isak starting in the Champions League.

The red card, I think, has altered that path. I am now expecting Isak to start in Gameweek 6 and Ekitike in the Champions League. This makes it more likely that Isak starts again in the league in Gameweek 7 as Slot builds his match fitness.

In his Gameweek 6 presser, Slot said:

“Yeah, he’s able to make minutes again. I still feel 90 – [it] depends also on the pace and the intensity of the game – might be a bit too much. But not only that, also for the long term. So you can maybe give one, I would call, stupid hit to bring him to 90 and then you brought him too far over the line. So, I don’t think it’s smart to play him 90 yet. But he’s further into his pre-season now and normally after two or three weeks in pre-season players go to 60, 70 minutes, and in some clubs they even bring them to 90. But if you look at our pre-season, we mainly bring them to 60 to 70 minutes then.” – Arne Slot on Alexander Isak

I am expecting a build of minutes. Isak registered an hour in the League Cup where he scored his first goal for the Reds. I hope for somewhere around 70 minutes in this one.

Isak v Salah

FPL pre-season: Malen + Watkins again, Xhaka debut, secretive Man City 2

The level of snark on here about template picks is something to behold

I went against the grain at the start of the season with Haaland and Salah but got other bits wrong and had to wildcard this week. Thinking independently, it will inevitably look like a lot of other teams.

The proliferation of content creation has led to a lot of copying from some, but I think a lot of people on here come to similar conclusions because generally the players we’re going to target are going to be similar.

haha at some point you ask yourself why does my team look so template? answer is because otherwise it would look so shite lol

I've never really seen the issue with the 'template', just pick who you like to watch / think will do well?

i do find the CC thing irritating, in large part because I think they have reduced the quality of the output here.

        I dont watch ccs.
I tried watching a lot for cwc fantasy because i was bored and there was no real content i could find (found ff scout after some looking and that introduced me to the platform) but honestly i made so many bad choices from that. At the start, i used transfermarkt only, and made a differential team, but then chickened out and mostly copied FPL fran/harry/etc. But then i was killing myself over selling Juan Pablo Freytes, 0.2% owned, and then he scored as the best defender until his sf elimination. Now i make myself never watch them, it makes me sell the gems i know i found, for others. And to make it worse, when i decided i had to get back to fluminense def, instead of doing the smart thing and picking freytes, i chose FPL fran's Samuel Xavier, who then promptly got benched for 1pt.

Guess what? Freytes got assist plus cs for being hooked early.

        Pain.....

The template has its place and mid-season its the template for a reason. But at the start there is no template other than people copying each other. Why did everyone have Murillo and Wirtz?

Sure, and the spoonfeeding annoys me. I can tell the people in my MLs who just copy mindlessly. But there is overlap with the better assets for a reason. I like Wirtz IRL but swerved him in FPL until he’d settled. But I got some other things wrong, like backing Forest and signing Johnson

Wirtz was touted as the best attacking midfielder in Europe and the price Liverpool paid seemed to underpin that view.

He might well be, when he finds his feet.

The gains are early on when folks listen to keep Palmer, Watkins, Wirtz etc while others pile onto the current hot form players

I liked murillo, i trusted forest and liked his DCs.
But i never really wanted Wirtz, pool attack confused me and then im an everton fan anyway.

What i think was silly is the GW1 cunhas/mbuemos.

In the PSG Shootout, Bentancur, Porro, Solanke scored.

Notably Porro was trusted with the final shot. (although PSG won it after he scored)

Richy, Kudus, BJ all not on the field, Tel and VDV missed. (tel wont shoot again for a while haha)]

      Solanke previously a main taker.

Richarlison scored one last year in the UEL, Kulu and Madders have taken one in a shootout once before, 3 years ago.

Richy scored 4 pens at everton, 100% record, Kudus has not scored a pen since 2022.

BJ took a lot at forest, but none since then. Same with Porro at sporting.

So in all, I would expect Richarlison to shoot, with BJ and Porro as possible deputies
Solanke should take them if he is on the pitch.
