Calling all stataholics – it’s time for our Gameweek 8 ‘Big Numbers’ article, reflecting on the opening seven rounds of 2025/26 Fantasy Premier League (FPL) action.

Poring through all of the Opta and StatsBomb data available in our Premium Members Area, we’ll discuss the most eye-catching stats from the season so far.

You can, of course, filter and sort all of the data used (and more) within your own parameters via the Members Area.

Only subscribers can read the full article; those wishing to sign up to our site and continue reading, and see a list of the benefits that Membership brings, can do so by clicking here.

GOALKEEPERS

3m team news:

5 clean sheets is an area where Newcastle United’s Nick Pope (£5.1m) is ahead of the rest. While low on save points (four), he’s also the only goalkeeper with an assist, putting him on a leading tally of 41.

7 save points are joint-most, shared by Robin Roefs (£4.6m) and Martin Dubravka (£4.0m). By collecting six bonus points and two double-digit hauls, Roefs sits alongside Pope on 41.

82.8% is the joint-second proportion of shots on target saved by those who’ve played more than once. Roefs and Guglielmo Vicario (£5.1m) can both boast this, plus the Tottenham Hotspur stopper is also second for expected goals (xG) prevented (+2.80).

DEFENDERS

Arsenal's defence: An enduring obstacle or a false dawn

48 overall points put Jurrien Timber (£5.9m) ahead of all other defenders. On four attacking returns, just like El Hadji Malick Diouf (£4.4m), the Arsenal full-back is the position’s outright leader for shots on target (five), going beyond Gameweek 2’s huge 24-pointer versus Leeds United.

Not only do the Gunners have the best backline – more on that later – but both Timber and teammate Riccardo Calafiori (£5.7m) dominate many defensive stats. The Italian is number one for shots (14), as the pair are far ahead of the rest for xG, share the most returns (seven) and are the only two with multiple double-digit outings.

Calafiori is the second-biggest xG underachiever (-0.83).

9 penalty area shots belong to these two and Daniel Munoz (£5.6m), where no other defender exceeds six.

Seven of the Colombian’s total have taken place in his latest three matches, where the recent goal at Everton rewarded him for being ranked second for attempts (10) and shots on target (four). He and Calafiori are the best for touches inside the box (26).

0.76 xG is pretty good for Wolverhampton Wanderers’ Ladislav Krejci (£4.5m), knowing he’s only been around since Gameweek 4. Used as both a defensive midfielder and centre-back, the 26-year-old already has a goal to his name and is near the top for efforts on target (three).

We singled him out in the latest fixture frisk because Sunderland (a) and Burnley (h) are up next. New colleague Hugo Bueno (£4.4m) sets the pace for this position’s successful crosses (13).

11 – Pipped by Bueno in that area, at least Kieran Trippier (£5.0m) beats him for the number of chances created. That’s impressive, considering how low his minutes have been. Perhaps the injuries to Tino Livramento (£5.0m) and Lewis Hall (£5.3m) will lock this set-piece taker into Newcastle’s backline for a bit – one which is watertight.

88 defensive contribution (DefCon) actions have been racked up by Marcos Senesi (£5.0m). This edges out Joachim Andersen (£4.5m) and James Tarkowski (£5.5m), though they’re together in collecting 12 points from FPL’s new rule.

Typically, the Gameweek in which many bought Senesi was the one where his 100% record of rewards ended.

MIDFIELDERS

FPL Gameweek 4: Saturday’s goals, assists, bonus + ‘DefCon’ points

Been on Saka all international break on WC but now seriously considering Eze. So much cheaper and hopefully reasonably nailed given the injuries.

Yeah. Medium term big payback plus more rank protecting ARS def coverage. Unsure of Spence mins and dont fancy TOT for cleanies over next 6.

I think the answer is "it depends...."
      - Can you just stick Spence on your bench? 4.5 is pretty cheap...
      - How many Arsenal defenders do you already have? If zero, then yeah, you need coverage asap. If one or two, a hit becomes more questionable
      - What else could you do with the money?

Do you guys look into ownership percentage on deciding who to bench/transfer?

For example: 44% of Managers in the league ahead of me own Reijnders, similarly Senesi is owned by 33% and Xhaka by 4%

So based on the stats probably I should start Xhaka and bench Senesi and Reijnders for better chance of going up.

    What do you guys think?

tbf on paper everyone on ur team can bag sum this week. It depends on ur thoughts to go to an Arsenal defender and if u still trust Liverpool in any way, shape or form (which against United is perfectly fine). Like u can't knock urself if u save this week.

Those who still have WC, does GW12 look like a better week to do it than GW13 ?

    - can WC over the international break
    - Poor-ish fixtures for Newcastle and Arsenal but great fixtures for the other big teams

Haven’t looked in detail but 13 has the problem of the Che v Ars game. Personally I would wait til 13 based on that if you are going to have 4-6 from those two teams. I WC a long time ago but have FH ear marked for 13

Doku even though he has looked good is still not certain of a start so that’s who I would go for.

I would probably punt on Wolt. Bowen seems to do it every year but at some point he can’t do it all on his own. Bowen has only got a handful of decent fixture Wolt seems a better medium term option to me.

I'm a great fan of multiple transfers as long as it's for removing duds or crocks. Why torture yourself for five or six weeks when you can get the team you want in an instant? Making a host of changes might cost you points but it gives you a much better chance of immediately nailing a player who can pay for the hits instantly .It's a bit like diversifying a portfolio on the stock market instead of putting all your eggs in the one basket.

      Speculate To Accumulate 😀

    Take out who for Enzo
    A. Elliot just the correct cash
    B. Reijnders which would save me a hit when doing Vicario to Pope next week as short funds for the move with A option. Probably going to bench Reijnders next few weeks anyway. Would consider getting him back for 13

We talking Harvey Elliot? Or Elliot Anderson?

If Harvey then no brainer A. If Anderson I'd be tempted to keep he is involved in all sorts and Reijnders has been points dodging

Yeah Harvey seems a no brainer out but I got 15 decent ones and he is last on bench every week and nowhere near a price drop. So he could just sit there til I need the cash for something else. I know I want rid of Vicario and Pope in next week and yes a hit for a goalie is insane to most but that’s how I play. If I lose Reijnders the hit can be avoided.

Bench boosting this week and planning to swap Sels for another goalie with my 1 FT. Have not used WC yet and will probably do that circa GW12 or later. OR is inside top 5k have had a great start.

    Dubravka (LEE)
Van de Ven (AVL) - Senesi (cry) - Gabriel (ful)
Semenyo (cry)(vc) - Kudus (AVL) - Saka (ful) - Bruno (liv)
Pedro (nfo) - Mateta (BOU) - Haaland (EVE)(C)

Sels (CHE) - Reijnders (EVE) - Esteve (LEE) - Diouf (BRE) 0.2 ITB 1 FT

    A) Sels to Pope (bha) 0.0 ITB
    B) Sels to Vicario (AVL) 0.0 ITB
    C) Sels to Petrovic (cry) 0.6 ITB
    D) Sels to Roefs (WOL) 0.5 ITB
    E) Sels to Sanchez (nfo) 0.2 ITB
    F) Keep Sels, do something else or nothing (please suggest)

    Any thoughts much appreciated!

If you are 5k do you need advice? I was feeling smug with my 65k. Those who like Bruno like Bruno so you probably won’t get rid but that would be my priority out move.
If you want to go goalie I would risk Sanchez as a diff at this stage with the fixtures but only if you are sure you don’t want 3 other Che.

Zophar. What value would you put on these two players? The first one has scored 4 goals in their last 15 PL games and the second one has scored 3 goals in their last 18 PL games. They have also contributed the odd assist.

Player One has no real incentive to break sweat anymore as he signed a new contract last March that will make him financially secure for a hundred life times while Player Two is no longer guaranteed his main source of goals.

      7.5m & 7.0m or 14.4m & 9.9m.?

      Cheers

That was my question last week! Thief!

You're right, and after a week it remains unanswered by Zophar which is probably our fault - the question should be addressed to Ragabolly the MIT physicist who managed to calculate how many clones we have and made partial sense of FPL price changes. Solving the mysteries of the universe should be a doddle

If you had Raya and Gyokeres, which option would you choose for tripling up on Arsenal, play safe and go double defence and select Gabriel/Timber or double up on attack and go Saka?

If you had Salah, would you captain him over Haaland?

Sorry have asked this a couple times but really torn. Do i BB this week? The quandry is the Pal vs Bou fixture with Sarr/Guehi against Semenyo/senesi. Does the BB hedge this or do I take an educated guess at outcome and bench a couple of the above?

    Raya
    Gabriel/Guehi/Senesi
    Semenyo/Reindeer/Kudus/Sarr
    Haaland/Gyok/Isak

    Dub/Caicedo/VDV/Mukiele

Any Burnley experts know if Ekdal will start?

    1. Ausman

Not a Burnley expert but found this:
The centre-back has started every league game for the Clarets this season, but was dropped for the trip to Villa Park. Not only was the 26-year-old taken out of the starting line-up, he didn’t even make the Burnley bench.
Instead, summer signing Axel Tuanzebe came in to make his first league appearance of the season.

Explaining that call, Parker explained: “I just wanted to change it up a little bit.
"We brought Axel to the club and I thought he was brilliant today [Sunday].
"He’s coming in from a long period on the sidelines and we were wanting to get him up to fitness and decided, certainly in the way we were going to play in terms of being more aggressive, I thought Axel could give us that and I thought he did.”
When asked if Ekdal is fully fit, considering he didn’t even make the bench, Parker added: “Yeah, he's fine.
"It was just more tactical at this moment. These are not easy decisions you have to make as a coach sometimes. I have to make a decision on the dynamics of the game and who I may need or who I may not need from the bench.”

So there you go, clear as mud! 🙂 I'd say 50/50.

Thanks haha, seems like an excuse for his absense really, was thinking maybe a disciplinary dropping, not ideal for BB

Would you have Stach, Longstaff, or Rejinders on WC?

    BB GW 9

    Pope Dub
    Senesi Gabriel Timber Rodon Chalobah
Saka Sarr Semenyo Enzo (if fit, Pedro over Bowen if not) Stach*
    Haaland Bowen Woltemade

See that I have to downgrade Chalobah to Richards or Truffert to afford Rejinders. But maby worth it as already enough funds in the defence, and mostly will play only 3 defs?

Just that CPL’s fixture in BB GW 9 is Arsenal away, therefore maby Truffert, home to NFO?

    Woltemade or Minteh for wildcard?

Woltemade better XGI per 90 but massively inflated by penalty. Better fixtures next 4 but does he get taken off early?

Woltemade. Converted penalties are same points as other goals. No points for minutes played, just what he does in those minutes. Don't give too much weighting to X stats when considering players. He's a PL rookie, minutes are being managed shrewdly and has great potential. Bayern Munich rated him highly, just not highly enough to pay for the man.

This is why you should get Wolt. Even if his xg is low, another player can win a penalty for him to score giving him more chances for points! Gordon does love a tumble in the box as well
