Crystal Palace and Bournemouth twice drew 0-0 last season, so naturally they served up a six-goal epic at Selhurst Park on Saturday.

From a second-half hat-trick to a first Premier League start for any £4.5m forward this season, we look back on a breathless game.

EVANILSON INJURY GIVES £4.5M FORWARD KROUPI A CHANCE

Evanilson (£7.0m) unexpectedly missed out on the early Game of the Season contender. A calf injury put paid to his involvement on Saturday.

In a big show of faith from Andoni Iraola, the Bournemouth boss gave French teenager Eli Junior Kroupi (£4.5m) a first-ever Premier League start in Evanilson’s stead.

And boy, did he repay the faith, with a first-half double putting the Cherries 2-0 up.

Post-match, Iraola praised Kroupi’s ability to “smell the goals”. The 19-year-old rookie certainly licked the xG pump with his two predatory strikes (the first goal especially); on both occasions, he reacted first to deflected crosses.

£4.5m forward

Above: Two attempts, two goals – Kroupi’s xG shotmap in Gameweek 8

So, what chance of further starts for the £4.5m forward?

First, an unhelpfully vague update on Evanilson’s injury from Iraola:

“He has a small injury in the soleus [in the lower calf]. The MRI doesn’t say it’s a big injury but it’s a muscle injury, [so you] never know. I think it’s similar to Brooksy. They are not big injuries but we don’t know if it’s going to be one, two, three weeks, I don’t know.” – Andoni Iraola on Evanilson’s injury, to BBC Solent Sport

He does have previous of giving sketchy timelines but, in fairness, Dr Google does indeed suggest mild calf strains will take 1-3 weeks to recover from.

When Evanilson does return, Kroupi faces a big task to keep his place. Perhaps he can make himself undroppable by bagging more goals but Iraola is a huge fan of Evanilson’s all-round game, something he’s hinted that Kroupi needs to work on.

“He’s a player who has a very good relationship with the goals. Obviously, on a very different level, he comes from France Ligue II, and this jump is massive to the Premier League. He is absorbing all the info that we are giving, he’s trying to improve in other areas where he’s not as strong as in the box, because he’s a great finisher. I’m happy and pleased for him because this will give him also some more confidence.” – Andoni Iraola on Eli Junior Kroupi, to BBC Solent Sport

“Eva is a very important player for us. Apart from the goals, he gives us a lot of things.

“For Junior, being so young, first starting option. He’s someone who smells the goals, he’s very brave for the second balls from these kinds of rebounds. Today he scored both goals and I’m happy for him.” – Andoni Iraola on Eli Junior Kroupi and Evanilson, to BBC Sport

We saw this a bit in the last two seasons with Enes Unal (£5.4m), someone who would frequently come off the bench to grab an attacking return yet still find it nigh-impossible to budge his positional rival.

MATETA SETS RECORDS

Jean-Philippe Mateta (£7.5m) was very much ‘due’ a goal, and three of them arrived on Saturday. Incredibly, he still managed to underachieve on the xG front despite bagging a hat-trick:

Mateta racked up a whopping 11 shots in this match, the same number that Ollie Watkins (£8.6m) has registered all season. It’s a tally that has only twice been beaten in a Premier League game.

A 26th-minute missed headed sitter set the scene for a rollercoaster afternoon that ended in similarly agonishing fashion when he ballooned over a glorious stoppage-time chance.

In between, though, two instictive finishes from Daniel Munoz (£5.6m) cross-shots and a second penalty of the season.

Above: Mateta’s 11 shots in Gameweek 8

Gameweek 9 is not a good entry point for the Frenchman, as Palace are away at Arsenal (although he did score there last season!).

Thereafter, though, with the underlying numbers, the reliable minutes, the penalty-taking duties and the fixtures, there’ll be plenty of takers:

MUNOZ DELIVERS AT BOTH ENDS AGAIN

These two clubs are among the top six for defensive contribution (DefCon) returns, so it always looked likely that several names would deliver the goods on Saturday.

Five did, in all, including DefCon poster boy Marcos Senesi (£5.0m). Chris Richards (£4.5m) is the first Palace defender to reach double figures for DefCon points in 2025/26, meanwhile.

Above: The players who delivered DefCon points at Selhurst Park on Saturday

Munoz did the business at both ends of the field for the second week running. His eye-catchingly advanced positions are nothing new; no one had more final-third touches at Selhurst Park.

No FPL defender has more attacking returns (four) or has posted a bigger xGI (2.62) than the Colombian this season. No full-back has more DefCon points (six), either. The complete package?

SEMENYO GETS ONE ASSIST – BUT NOT ANOTHER

Oliver Glasner called this “one of our best [ever] attacking performances”, and it was hard to argue.

Bournemouth had conceded just nine big chances all season before Saturday; Palace carved out seven against the Cherries.

£4.5m forward

Ryan Christie (£5.0m), on as a sub, looked like he had grabbed the winner before Mateta’s late penalty.

No goals for Antoine Semenyo (£8.0m), then, but another attacking return for the column for his role in Kroupi’s second. He was also involved in the opener, too, but no assist was awarded on that occasion. You can read more about that decision here.

Senesi had an eventful afternoon, gaining DefCon points, losing a clean sheet and nearly getting sent off when his yellow card was reviewed.

Calafiori for triple Arsenal defence so it’s not hurting too much 😉

Held Porro instead but he scored me 7 points v Leeds so that was fine. But I want Muñoz back for certain.

Thinking to sell Porro + VDV for Muñoz + James

I sold him as well! Cost me 8 points but I needed a way to get Gabriel for some Arsenal coverage. I also have Lacroix, might have to swap him for Munoz.
I like the idea of getting rid of Spurs assets with their fixtures, Munoz is fine but not a fan of James. He has not been much of a goal scorer the past few years and is very injury prone. I have had Chalobah since GW1 and he's been good (apart from the red card!!) but he's more reliable IMO because he has more avenues to points.

I switched him out on my first wildcard before the assists started flying in.

      Also lost Diouf.

Which potential move to prio (I only have 1 FT)

    1. Pedro to Woltemade
    2. VDV to Gabriel (keep 3 at the back)
    3. Or Reinildo/Esteve to Gabriel (for potential 4 at the back setup)

    Current team with £2.5 ITB..

    Pope
    Munoz, VDV, Calafiori
    Sarr, Semenyo, Saka, Kudos

I'd go 3 with Reinildo - he's no Alderete or Mukiele for defcon
VDV is cheap enough to bench most weeks and you could find a way to make him Senesi or a fit Andersen or if they go full Nuno a West Ham defender at some point if you wanted

It's a Palace defender but no rush. You were benching till GW10 anyway which is where you would want Palace. If he's fit then I wouldn't bother and switch Gud to Richards instead.

    A - Gyok
    B - Reijnders

        Suddenly benching Tijjani
Reijnders next week is an easy call.

It will be tough at Arsenal who will probably win but Palace can score there. There's often goals for both teams in that fixture.

Gyokeres stinking up the gaff and lack of double Arsenal def is also hurting (not that I’m expecting a CS vs Palace)…

Feels sideways to do Gyokeres to Mateta this week, though, so thinking two from Grealish, VdV, Reijnders out using 2FT £4.0m ITB… and BB9!

      A) Grealish + Reijnders to Saka + Sarr
      B) Grealish + VdV to £9.1-9.5m mid + Gabriel/Timber
      C) Reijnders + VdV to £8.1-8.5m mid + Gabriel/Timber
      D) Other (eg just one of the above and save FT, no BB)

      Raya Dubravka
      Munoz Senesi Burn VdV Gudmundsson
      Semenyo Kudus Grealish Minteh Reijnders
      Haaland Gyokeres Woltemade

At first I thought that Gyokeres will be another Lukaku - but clumsy but able to bully weaker teams.
Now I’m thinking he’s more like Darwin Nunez - works hard for the team but absolutely useless in front of the goal.

          “He had a decent shot”

          Which one?
          The one at goalie?

Anyway 1 decent shot playing as center forward for league leaders is bit weak, no?

He blanked in 4 consecutive league games now as well as when playing for Sweden.

I think he’s another case of player tearing it up in a farmers league and struggling PL.

The early effort where he swung at it, I think on 37 mins but I thought he pulled it wide.

            My bad

It was a save and also the effort late on was at the keeper

            Still think he'll do okay

But as Ange knows it's a results business and you don't get much time when in the spotlight

Arteta will protect him and play him anyway

I'm not so sure it will. I'd like to see him do well (nephew is an ardent Arsenal fan), but to my eye, he simply doesn't look up to it. Tearing it up in the Portuguese league doesn't necessarily translate here. Both Ekitike and Woltemade have new teams, new cities etc and have played half his minutes with far better results. He does remind me of Nunez and also Werner. Can't fault their effort and willingness to work for the team, but they are there to score goals, and it looks like he is struggling to do that. He just doesn't look a natural goalscorer.

        It's decent

I've benched 14, 15 and 16 points the previous 3 Gw, boosted 19 this and with £1.4m itb it's probably prime time to do it with the cash to spread around the squad.

Mukiele is maybe slightly less secure but he could be Senesi level if he has defcons, goal threat, and clean sheet potential (he does at home).

Definitely the main part I am struggling with. Have leant towards Anthony in calculated risk vs ownership and the nagging feeling that if I brought Anthony in on wildcard and won't start him against wolves then I should have just gone King and saved the money...

I concur, perhaps swap 2 and 3 around?

My current bench order is Reijnders, Mukiele, Romero.

It's a Champions League week with UEFA matches so there's probably going to be injuries etc to shake that up by Friday anyhow.

Leeds v West Ham on Friday night at Elland Road should be a tasty encounter.

We also get a Saturday late evening KO, no early Saturday game on TNT in the UK.

Definately start Anthony. I have him in my team and he's 100% starting at Wolves. Your logic is sound, fixtures starting to lighten up, and if you don't start him against the bottom team then what was the point of getting him?

        These double chips...

TC and BB, before and after Dec 31 skew things massively, week to week.

Okay, you get 4 chances to augment your own score across the season.

The wildcard and FH is a bit different because you still get 11 players and a double captain.

But each week you don't play one of these chips you're up against tens/hundreds of thousands of them.

        There 12.2 million teams currently.

Say half are active. That's 6.1m players (BB and TC in particular for the points boost), x 4 chips ÷ 38 weeks = 642,105.

You can literally be playing against half a million points loading chips in any given week.

So the only comparative rank that counts is OR in Gw19 and of course at the end of the season.

The only OR that matters is at the end of the season. Saved FTs, extra 5 for AFCON, double chips; its all about timing and usage. Whats fun is its become a bit more strategic with all of these thrown in.

            Reijnders to anyone then!

xGI would give you Bruno or Enzo.

ICT index would give you Grealish or Bruno.

Given that you have Saka, Semenyo and Kudus these are options.

Also Rice, Anthony etc are up there on points scored already.

Zombie FPL rule #1: No points like last weeks points. Also known as form.
Zombie FPL rule #2: Time is a flat circle. Whoever scored last week will keep on scoring forever and ever.
Zombie FPL rule #3: Copy Harry! If you're not completely braindead, pick one different bench fodder.
Zombie FPL rule #4: Ask questions non-stop to make others think that you're actually contemplating decisions when in fact you're doing #3.

This would be my ideal chip scenario:

        - 2 wildcards as happens now
        - 1 Free Hit
        - 1 Bench boost
        - 1 Triple Captain
        - 1 Vice Captain (double your vice captain's points as well as your captain's that week)
        - 1 Super sub (choose one player from your subs bench to also play that week)
