Crystal Palace suffered a heavy defeat at Leeds United on Saturday, with Dominic Calvert-Lewin (£5.7m) once more proving to be the difference maker.

Here are our Scout Notes from Elland Road.

IN-FORM CALVERT-LEWIN

Calvert-Lewin remarkably took his tally to six goals from his last five matches on Saturday.

Both strikes came from Ethan Ampadu (£4.9m) long throws, as Leeds’ physicality and capacity to win duels/second balls proved too much for Palace.

Netting for a fifth consecutive match, Calvert-Lewin has now scored against Manchester City, Chelsea, Liverpool, Brentford and Palace in quick succession.

“Very pleased. So he is, of course, a top player for us. I have spoken about how highly I rate him and value him from the beginning, from the first day he walked through the door. Of course, the numbers don’t lie. He is in red-hot form at the moment. For me, like I mentioned, one of the best English strikers in this league. He has proved it before whenever he was fit and he has shown his quality. And right now, he is on a path to be really also a top, top class player for Leeds United.” – Daniel Farke on Calvert-Lewin

Few forwards can beat Calvert-Lewin for shots over the last five Gameweeks, too.

And crucially, five of his 13 efforts were taken from inside the six-yard box, a league-high.

“In the six-yard box, that’s where I need to be. When you’re in a good moment and you’ve got the run, the ball starts dropping for you and that’s where I am at the minute. The belief stays the same, my belief in myself is what I’ve always had. But when you start hitting the back of the net, it pays off in a different way. Nothing’s changed for me, week on week I look to give my best for the team and continue to perform well.” – Dominic Calvert-Lewin

STACH IMPACT

Daniel Farke’s switch to a 3-5-2 formation is also getting the best out of Anton Stach (£4.9m).

The German midfielder has produced four attacking returns in as many matches since returning from a head injury, having fired in a late free-kick on Saturday.

With 13 shots and 13 chances created over the last four Gameweeks, he’s clearly one of the best sub-£5.0m midfielders to target right now, having only narrowly missed out on defensive contribution (DefCon) points against Palace.

Elsewhere, Joe Rodon (£4.0m) and Jayden Bogle (£4.4m) combined well down the right.

Centre-back Rodon took up some advanced positions and even looked like a winger at times, with two of his four goal attempts from open play.

PALACE “BULLIED”

Palace conceded all four goals from set plays at Elland Road.

In addition to those aforementioned concessions from long throws, a recycled corner and a direct free-kick also found the net.

Oliver Glasner’s side have now conceded 19 times in the Premier League this season, with 11 of those goals coming from dead-ball situations.

“We were bullied from set plays. Every single set play was dangerous. I can’t remember one big chance from open play. We could have conceded two or three more from set play goals. Conceding four is embarrassing. It’s the fourth game in the last few weeks we’ve lost because of set plays. We conceded two against Manchester United, (one) at Strasbourg and at Arsenal. It looks like we’re not sharp enough. We have to show a different set-up or mindset. If you defend set plays like today you have no chance to get a point in the PL.

“That’s why in the end we lost and conceded all the goals. In our attack we struggled winning duels, losing so many balls. Not creating enough situations and if the opposition plays man to man you have to win your duel. Uche did it at the end and we got a penalty. Sometimes you can reduce to the basics and in those we were by far not good enough today.” – Oliver Glasner

Justin Devenny‘s (£4.3m) late penalty offered a consolation, but having made wholesale changes from the 2-2 draw against KuPS only 48 hours before, this was a desperately disappointing display.

Chris Richards (£4.6m), Maxence Lacroix (£5.2m), Marc Guehi (£5.3m) and Adam Wharton (£5.0m) did at least bank DefCon.

Palace now face another quick turnaround, with a trip to Arsenal in the Carabao Cup quarter-finals on Tuesday preceding Sunday’s home clash against Tottenham Hotspur.

    With Bruno injury:
    A. Play Stach (sun), move next week
    B. Move to Cunha (NEW WOL)
    C. Move to Rogers (che ars)

So torn on Cunha or Bowen.
Surely United are deeply impacted by no Bruno?
Bowen's long-term fixtures are so inviting.

Bruno is an immediate sell. A soft tissue injury with xmas coming up and given how important he is, don't expect him back before Game week 20 at the earliest and once the scan is done next week by wednesday it could be confirmed 6 wks or 3 months if serious.

FH19, need a Bruno replacement for long term (excluding gw19), pick one:

Cunha - NEW, lee, bur, MCI, ars, FUL (Man U attack concerns?)
Rogers - che, NOT, cpl, EVE, new, BRE (2 difficult away games in next 3)
Gordon - mun, CRY, LEE, wol, AVL, liv (rotation risk with Barnes?)
Wirtz - WOL, ful, ars, BUR, bou, NEW (Lack of form?)

Yes, I get that. I'd buy Cunha then, mainly because of better fixtures than Rogers. Gordon and Wirtz a bit too risky in my opinion.

Personally, next 2/3 for Rogers look difficult, I was thinking to move to Rogers past gw20 however he’s on fire. Gordon is the one I really like with the form and fixtures but I’m not sure if he’s completely nailed down the LW yet, even if he has Barnes will deffo eat into his minutes over Christmas idk if it’s worth the risk given the fixtures. Cunha’s is tempting but it’s Utd and without Bruno and Mbuemo idk how many goals they will score over this period. Really difficult

Is he? He’s blanked 10 times this season. Realistically, he’s had 3 good GWs all season, against lee, whu and MUN… 3 easy fixtures… in the rest he’s either blanked or got a single assist.

By this same assessment, Cunha has had no double digits returns this season, with no more than a single return per game max

Long term would be Gordon though he is inconsistent.
However, you can do Cunha for 18 and 19 then switch to Rogers in 20 for the longer term.

    4FTs 0.4ITB

    Dubravka
    Timber VVD O’Reilly
    Saka Foden Semenyo Wilson
    Haaland Ekitike Thiago

    Verbruggen; Richards Esteve King

The plan was to do Semenyo to Cunha in GW19… however, I currently have only the exact funds to make this switch, but with Cunha’s price set to rise tonight, I would no longer be able to make this switch without having to make further transfers.

Do I just make the transfer now?

Is there anyone else in my squad that needs moving on?

I get that Thiago’s form hasn’t been great but they have some lovely fixtures coming up. And I just can’t see how Bowen is that much of an improvement. Two strikers, both on pens, playing for rubbish teams.

I just can’t get on the Rice bandwagon. Maybe just me not getting with the times, but I can’t be doing with the whole DEFCON thing. I play FPL for enjoyment and excitement, hoping to see my players score or assist… not make an interception!

Cunha's price is not set to rise til Tuesday.

An alternative is mason mount. Consider selling Saka for Rice and then upgrade wilson to Rogers.

For Cunha as well who's playing in a depleted team and playing Newcastle next.

      1. boroie

        The next fixture is 50:50…

        Cunha(NEW) v Semenyo(bre)

        … could go either way.

But look past that fixture and you have…

        Cunha - WOL lee bur
        Semenyo - che ARS TOT

        Cunha is also on penalties…

So I think the transfer definitely makes sense in Gw19…

So it then comes down to whether you make the transfer in GW18 and beat the price changes or you hold off until GW19 and accept you are probably losing at least 0.3 on price changes.

Am I the only one that absolutely hates DEFCON?

Like how on earth can you go and concede 3 goals to Leeds and still deserve two extra points for your defensive contributions?

Just get rid of them… completely ruining the game in my opinion.

It's made people consider CDM players that they would never have considered before. It's good that DefCons have opened up the pool of players.

Maybe… I think it has to be refined at the very least.

You can not convince me that the likes of Lacroix and Richards deserved DEFCON points after conceding 3 goals against Leeds.

Maybe it should be that if a teams concedes 2 or more, they can not receive DEFCON points.

Cause it could’ve been worse I guess

It opens the game up and stops everyone having the same teams with variation

Cunha is not a good pick without Bruno.

The same Cunha who didn't have Bruno at Wolves.

Wirtz is going up too, who is 0.1m more, so I can make the switch when Cunha is about to overlap his price.

Wirtz will likely outscore Cunha this coming week, and you'll likely still be able to swap him to Cunha if he doesn't perform.

The problem I have with Wirtz is that I also have Ekitike so when Liverpool play Arsenal away in GW21 you’ve got two of your attacking players playing against the best defence in the league. I think that’s why I will go Cunha instead.

Tempted to just WC this week instead of next.
Other option- must WC next GW. Short turn around.
7.4m or less mid (Rice?) + Etikike in for Bruno/Thiago.

    Timber, VVD, Andersen, O' Reilly.
    Bruno, Saka, Semenyo, Foden.
    Thiago, Haaland.

Yesterday, I did something I haven't done in a very long time; many years - I transferred in a player before he'd played in that GW.

Said player has been killing me week in, week out through not owning him, and this week was earmarked to bring him in ahead of NEW, WOL, lee, bur.
So I did it. And it bit me on the arsenal big time.

I hate posts asking for predictions that can't possibly be predicted, but if there are any Mystic Megs or Nostradamuses out there, how many times do you think Bruno will drop before next deadline, and how many times do you think Rice will rise please? I know it's a downward price move, but this is the time of the season to build TV, not chuck it away.

Just wondering if it's feasible to hold to next week to deal with it for free, or take the hit for my stupidity and move on.

    Any thoughts?

He is definitely out for Wolves and burnley. No way Amorim would risk him during the xmas period given how important he is. Scan results due wednesday but cunha would have gone up by then.

Bruno at 9.4 will drop to 9.3 before Tuesday and when news is released of the results of his scan on wed or thursday, if good it will stay 9.3, if bad aka he is out for 3 - 6+ weeks then he will drop twice to 9.1 or 9.0 before next saturday deadline.

I'd do something for free, but unless you think Rogers is going to embark on a Foden-esque spell, I don't know it'd be for him. I'd have Rice, Cunha or even Wirtz for a punt, I think.

Might be Cunha for the next 3 GW's as a punt then!

Was feeling pretty pleased with myself doing Saka and Thiago to Rice and Ekitike last night for free, saving .2m in the process. Of course it’s all gone tits up tonight with Bruno.

Im really not feeling a hit as I won’t lose value on a Bruno drop and have DCL first sub. Cunha is tempting for -4 though, long term.

Probably fine to leave it be but it’ll be temping not to

Wirtz. If Wirtz blanks vs Wolves, change him to Cunha

Wondering the same, I think Cunha. Could get Rogers after he plays Chelsea and Arsenal.
