The Gameweek 26 Scout Notes continue with Sunderland 0-1 Liverpool and Aston Villa 1-0 Brighton and Hove Albion, with Virgil van Dijk (Β£5.9m) emerging as one of the key talking points.

VAN DIJK HAULS

Virgil van Dijk netted the only goal as Liverpool became the first team to beat Sunderland at the Stadium of Light in 2025/26.

The Dutch international headed in Mohamed Salah’s (Β£14.0m) second-half corner and claimed 17 points, thanks to his goal, a clean sheet, defensive contribution (DefCon) points and the maximum bonus.

Ibrahima Konate (Β£5.4m) also impressed at the heart of Liverpool’s defence.

β€œThis game was pretty close to perfection, how we defended, the intensity, but also the chances we generated. Maybe we should have scored more but it’s still taking it game by game.” – Virgil van Dijk

Notably, Liverpool are third for expected goals conceded (xGC) over the last six Gameweeks, with interest in van Dijk set to ramp up ahead of this run of fixtures:

WIRTZ UNLUCKY

Liverpool were by far the better side on Wednesday, with 23 shots on goal.

Florian Wirtz (Β£8.4m) was superb and struck the post, while Hugo Ekitike (Β£8.9m) and Salah both missed decent opportunities.

β€œNot for the first time he was really good. But recently when he was really good he was also involved in goals and assists. I think today he was very close and maybe should have been on the scoreboard with the amount of quality he has.” – Arne Slot on Florian Wirtz

Wirtz also forced Robin Roefs (Β£4.9m) into a couple of saves, with five shots in total, the most of any Liverpool player:

Wataru Endo (Β£4.9m), meanwhile, filled in for the suspended Dominik Szoboszlai (Β£6.7m) at right-back and performed well, but later picked up an injury.

β€œWe don’t expect a positive outcome. Like I said, we have to wait and see. We expect not to have him for quite a long time. That is not the first time with our right full-backs. We have accepted this every time. We have to find solutions to keep performing well.” – Arne Slot on Wataru Endo

ALDERETE LATEST

Sunderland centre-back Omar Alderete (Β£4.1m) was forced off late on against Liverpool, with some reports suggesting that he picked up a muscle injury.

Regis Le Bris failed to provide an update on his condition after full-time, but with the Black Cats in FA Cup action on Sunday, we should find out more soon.

Among Sunderland’s other budget defenders, Nordi Mukiele (Β£4.6m) and the β€˜out-of-position’ Trai Hume (Β£4.5m) both missed half-chances and collectively took seven shots ahead of next week’s home encounter with Fulham.

ROGERS + WATKINS POOR

Aston Villa successfully secured a narrow 1-0 win over Brighton on Wednesday.

Tyrone Mings (Β£4.3m) forced the late winner from a corner, but the performance was flat and often laboured, with Morgan Rogers (Β£7.6m) and Ollie Watkins (Β£8.6m) poor throughout.

Rogers racked up four shots, all inside the box, but his passing frequently let him down, while Watkins only touched the ball twice in the Brighton penalty area.

In truth, Unai Emery’s team have looked pretty ordinary at Villa Park lately, having scored only one goal in their last three home matches against Everton, Brentford and Brighton.

It’s perhaps understandable given the injuries to key midfielders Boubacar Kamara (Β£4.9m), Youri Tielemans (Β£5.9m) and John McGinn (Β£5.4m), but it’s clearly a situation that’ll need to be monitored, with Leeds United up next at Villa Park in Gameweek 27.

As for Brighton, they didn’t offer much in attack either, with Ferdi Kadioglu (Β£4.4m) the nearest to finding the net, when his effort was tipped onto the bar.

CASH + VAN HECKE INJURY LATEST

Matty Cash (Β£4.9m) missed out in Gameweek 26 due to injury, with Lamare Bogarde (Β£4.0m) filling in at right-back.

After the match, Emery provided an update.

β€œHe was injured, with a small injury. I don’t know if he will be available for Saturday. Each day is important for how he is progressing.” – Unai Emery on Matty Cash

Just seconds after the hour mark, Jan Paul van Hecke (Β£4.5m) went off for Brighton, but it was a pre-planned move, having previously missed out on Sunday due to a minor hamstring issue.

β€œWe know that he could not play for 90 minutes, so that was the normal procedure. We had to take him out after 60, 65. That was the maximum of his playing time, what he was capable of doing. So therefore, we knew that we have to take him off.” – Fabian Hurzeler on Jan Paul van Hecke

There was no injury for Carlos Baleba (Β£4.5m) either – he was subbed off to avoid a second yellow card, having been booked in the second minute.

    Palmer/Rayan/Senesi in

    Rice/Mbuemo/Chalobah out

Still have Sanchez and Pedro from Chelsea and Gab and Timber from Arsenal (and Bruno F from Man U) - these three moves would be for free leaving 1.0 ITB.

Saliba's unknown illness makes the hindsight Gabriel/Arsenal defence talk moot

Was it that unknown? I don't know about others but where I work different people are off sick every day pretty much since December. Different kids going off sick at school, my own having broke her 100% attendance record this week. There is a tonne of illness about and these footballers we just see as numbers on a screen because of the way FPL has gone are not immune to it

Cooled down a bit on both the BB (for free) and (C)Palmer (-4) options. I think I should go for simplicity here: Timber to VVD, park Rice on the bench and see if he does enough vs Spurs to stay. I could still be swayed by the Wolves game and cup performances/flags, so no moves yet

    Roefs
    Gabriel Timber Chalobah
    BrunoF Mbeumo (V)Semenyo Rogers
    Haaland (C)Pedro Thiago
    .
    Dubravka Rice Mukiele Hill
    .
1 FT. 1.8m ITB. WC21. BB, FH, TC left

    GW27: Timber to VVD
    GW28: Roefs to Kelleher
    GW29: Rice to (C/V)Wirtz

Then hopefully roll FTs into DGW33 and decide on BB vs TC when we know the landscape

    1. Jet5605
      • 12 Years
      6 months, 12 days ago

I wouldn't bother with Palmer personally but would still be open to BB. I think Muki likely to get 6+, Hill 4+ given his crazy DC stat this week and Rice 4+. West Ham should be on the front foot at home and I would expect Hill to do plenty defending. Dubravka is a write off although may rack up 1-2 save points and so it depends if you'd rather wait to change him on WC. Other moves look good.

      1. Ze_Austin
        • 7 Years

BB would involve Dubravka to Kelleher

In that case I'd be very tempted. Rice still more than capable of grabbing an attacking return in a spicy derby too despite his recent returns.

The reasoning for not going with Palmer is the two transfers (unless you plan on keeping him) and most of his recent points have come from a freakish run of silly pushes on Pedro in the box. Ofc he has the ability to haul v BUR but he could get subbed around 60 if the game is in the bag.

Thoughts on Pickford, DCL & Cunha to Kelleher, Thiago & Semenyo for -4?

Appreciate the hit isn't ideal but as well as getting Thiago v BRI (instead of Rice v tot), it allows me to get Dango v bur or Wilson v TOT in 28 for free which I wouldn't otherwise be able to do.

    Pickford
    Gabriel - Timber - Munoz
    BrunoF - Enzo - Cunha - KDH
    Haaland - Ekitike - DCL

They've been defensively sound (yet conceding one late goal), so maybe just the single digit return for Thiago

Tough to call, but I think Burnley is a better entry point for Brentford attackers

Thanks mate, yeah Dango for the fixtures is the way. Also, Everton struggle to score enough goals and aside from Ndiaye’s penalties I don’t see returns that often.

Like the Dango move. Are you keeping Pedro for the tough games? I'd only get him if I had plenty free transfers to move him on but that's because I'm aiming for a Haaland, Thiago, Eki front 3 until WC32.

Why does the ticker show MCI-CRY as on in gw31? Isn’t it a blank?

Slight chance of still being rescheduled to another day within the same GW

Palmer, Bruno, Ekitike and Pedro in addition to Haaland and Gabriel, nice! What is your team value?

109.7, but due to a hit addiction. Cut it down since WC21. Up from 3m to 2m since then

Insane value! I thought my 104.7 was pretty decent but I just changed my squad to g40Steve’s and I am -5.1 πŸ˜†

        Thank you.

Points benched last week (26) is painful to see πŸ˜†

Zero hits all season so far. This is unheard of for me.

What to do with Ekitike and is Semenyo a must?

Hold Ekitike, and maybe. Some comments/RMTs justified selling Semenyo for Arsenal doublers after he blanked last GW. I'd just say get him now if there's someone you need to sell

After I do Enzo + DCL > Dango + Pedro I can afford Chalobah > Virgil. Is that a move worth doing with the Liverpool fixtures?

Alternatively I can do Chalobah Enzo DCL > Mukiele Dango Ekitike

      1. Count of Monte Hristo

        Mukiele can be Guehi/Cash/Lacroix

Hill over Mukiele for fixtures, and this looks good next GW

Prefer Wirtz Thiago to Dango Ekitike, if Hill's price helps that work. Ignore this part if you have Thiago already

But really, when there are so many options that involve selling fit nailed players who don't face top clubs this GW, I'd rather just wait and see who becomes more of a priority

I already own Hill and Thiago.

          Raya Dubravka

          Timber Gabriel Chalobah Andersen Hill

          Bruno Enzo Semenyo Rogers Anderson

          Thiago Haaland DCL

Okay, this is already great for GW27. Only really missing a Chelsea captain. Let's see what becomes obvious next GW. Best of luck! πŸ™‚
