Manchester City can move to within two points of Arsenal in the Premier League table with a win over Newcastle United tonight.

Kick-off at the Etihad is at 20:00 GMT.

TEAM NEWS

After rotating many of his regulars for the FA Cup fourth-round tie with Salford City, Pep Guardiola mostly reverts to the side he sent out in Gameweek 26.

There is one change: Omar Marmoush comes in for Phil Foden.

Erling Haaland, confirmed as fit by Guardiola on Friday, leads the line for the Cityzens.

Savinho is back amongst the substitutes after recovering from a medium-term injury.

Newcastle manager Eddie Howe makes just one change from the side that beat Qarabag 6-1 on Wednesday.

Jacob Ramsey comes in for Harvey Barnes.

LINE-UPS

Manchester City XI: Donnarumma, Nunes, Dias, Guéhi, Aït-Nouri, Rodri, Silva, O’Reilly, Marmoush, Semenyo, Haaland.

Subs: Trafford, Reijnders, Stones, Cherki, Gonzalez, Savinho, Khusanov, Foden, Lewis.

Newcastle United XI: Pope, Trippier, Thiaw, Burn, Hall, Tonali, Willock, Ramsey, Elanga, Woltemade, Gordon.

Subs: Ruddy, Ramsdale, Joelinton, Barnes, Osula, Murphy, Murphy, Shahar, Neave.

Newcastle are a good side, can turn up against anyone, the Euro win might even have added a little confidence, City have clearly changed tactics with Haaland no longer the only outlet meaning his output by definition has and will continue to drop as supported by underlyings....

Meanwhile best attack against worst team had player sent off with half hour to go...the best captain was pretty clear cut I'd say

      Gabriel - Saliba - Richards
      Palmer - Bruno F - Mbeumo - Rogers - Semenyo
      Ekitike - Thiago

      Verbruggen - Pedro - Reinildo - Nallo

      A. Palmer + Pedro âž¡ Haaland + KDH

      OR

Blame FFS. Blame the 'pro pundit' mentality. Blame those who built an industry and made money out of this hobby, and made it mainstream.

It used to be a bit of fun on the side, for many it has now blurred the boundaries with actual football.

An alternative is to be very selective and strong on the boundaries yourself, and to switch off from this nonsense regularly.

Yep. I want to go back to the days where I watched games because I wanted to, not because I have some nobody defender in a nothing team. I want to watch games as a neutral, where nothing spoils my night. I want to commit less time to FPL and otherwise meaningless games, and watch fat more quality films and TV.

Yeah I have been wondering about how I play FPL recently. I read about people who can't watch football if they're not betting on it, and I thought how terrible that would be, but FPL affects my enjoyment of watching matches too, albeit it's a lot less of a problem. I do enjoy playing it, though I'm not very good at it, but I may try to play differently next season to make it more fun. Not sure exactly what form that takes though.

Do people generally understand that this used to be a fun side-attraction to the weekend's football – and now people have monetised it for their own gain, and make as big a deal out of it as possible in order to further their own interests, and therefore create these conflicts that the above speak of?

Or is this all you know anyway, given age range?

I am probably much older than the average on here, so I have seen how it was before 'this' and enjoyed football for several decades.

Interested to know what the overall experience is.

I watched football for decades before FPL appeared too. I think I'm maybe a bit jaded with both the actual football and the fantasy game, it's all feeling a bit dull at the moment. I've enjoyed the winter olympics more than most of the games I've watched this season.

Without Fpl I wouldn't pay to watch these games, I would have to start betting seriously to have some interest at least. Scouting players earlier in the season in almost every game is interesting. Football as a neutral isn't that interesting, might as well watch other leagues, sports, or Friends/ Happy Days etc... Don't see any real point to do that. Fpl gives more than it takes. However I naturally watched our ice hockey team to win bronze medal rather than my Norwegian C failing to score.

But for those who take fpl too seriously when having bad luck, do something to your attitude or quit playing if fpl takes more than it gives.

This is an interesting view as well, building a lot of context.

I abandoned the real game. Watched every game, every minute, and then Everton vs Burnley happened. "6 point game", both teams trying to avoid relegation. Two players diving, winning pens, game over. Later I watched Liverpool, my favourite team, Salah and Mané diving. Broke my heart.

I still enjoy FPL. FFS, everyone here, ups and downs, is a major part of it.

Interesting. So no actual football at all? Did you support a team?

I assume ther is another cohort – the number-crunchers who never watched football anyway but just play this game purely on numbers.

I watch a game now and then, local games (Finland). I still support Liverpool, because I connect with the history of the club and especially the fans.

Yeah - from watching every Premier League game (100% eye test) I switched to not watching the games, only relying on data. Felt weird at first, but it works.

I think FPL makes the televised matches more interesting. I'm a Boro season ticket holder so still enjoy watching live football.
I do think there is a large money making industry associated with FPL. Some FPL commentators enjoy an unfair advantage due to their contacts in the game. Some commentators are also living off past glories when very few people participated. The average player is now a lot more savvy on FPL strategies and information available.

This is true, I personally think the bigger factor however is that football is just not as good, fun or entertaining as it once was.
Too commercial, no passion or loyalty these days, could be rose tinted nostalgic glasses but I know a lot of people who share a similar opinion.

Also feel VAR has removed any life that was left in it.

Re Fpl effect on it, as others have alluded to with regards to content creators and social media etc, it’s made the whole shebang “too much of a good thing”, if that makes sense, and lost it’s magic, was better when it felt like the game had a cult following as opposed to a mass following.

Also every footballer these days is a supreme fit athlete, with it being just as important as natural talent.
So in yester years it felt like a lot of players had more of a unique identity and more often than not weren’t programmed supreme athletes.

Though personally I think VAR is correct, in principle – because I want the truth to prevail in the name of sporting integrity. But... it's just been done terribly, and for years.

Yeah it’s the delay in playing everything in slow motion that ruins it for me

That is massively annoying. They have forgotten which came first out of the chicken and the egg – teams and players delay the game and bore the fans in order to win at the later stages. Forgetting that there would never have been a profession in the game before fans and money on the gate.

                Don't take the p***.

There is some of that, perhaps, but I would attest personally that from what i have seen the physical and mental commitment as professionals during the match itself has never wavered, the 90 minutes.

Apart from a few chancers, which you have always had as a small percentage. Like Jadon Sancho.

Maybe it’s the impact it had on my youth, but it genuinely felt like it meant more to the players, fans and everyone say 20 years ago.

Maybe I’m just getting old lol

Read the match reports, on the very same internet you are using to ask this question.

Come on, at least do your own basics and then ask specifics if needed.

I try not to think of "back" when considering FPL players, as their performance has nothing to do with how recently I sold them. Especially since teams and players change unpredictably too

So my question is: will O'Reilly improve my squad if I got him now?

          I think so, so yeah

Recovering from 3m OR by WC21

Now 1.6m, with my BB dependant on Mukiele and Roefs

So I'm nowhere near most other commenters 😀

                    Wish you a Sunderland CS.

GW24 WC helped me get to 5k OR after being stuck between 30-100k for 14 GWs.

3FTs saved currently so confident I can manage the blanks and DGWs coming up.

Will he? Evidence suggests not, Pep has big long runs with favourites - and he is doing well. If you're in the bad books, you're in the bad books.

I wish he would in some way, I have Foden.

But Foden is out and O'Reilly is in, and that is how Pep works. He's so moody, people are in and out.

Come on Pep, help me out, see something you once loved in Philip.

        B. Sanchez, Konate (cost: 1FT). 10 starters in GW31

        C. A. Becker, O’Reily (cost: 2FT) 9 starters in GW31
