Three of the ‘big six’ were in pre-season action on Wednesday as the countdown to Gameweek 1 continues.

We start our round-up of the midweek friendlies with Chelsea, who faced Juventus.

CHELSEA 0-1 JUVENTUS

Chelsea XI: Sanchez (Penders 46); Palestra (Acheampong 65), Fofana (Subuloye 66), Tosin (Sarr 46), Hato (Anselmino 66); Caicedo (Essugo 66), Nicoll-Jazuli (Lavia 65); Quenda (Estevao 46), J. Pedro (Delap 66), Gittens (Satpaev 65); Welbeck (Jackson 46 [Mudryk 82])

  • Chelsea slipped to a second successive pre-season defeat on Wednesday with a 1-0 loss against Juventus in Hong Kong.

  • Notably, the match at Kai Tak Sports Park marked another instance of Xabi Alonso fielding a four-man backline rather than deploying the three-man defence set-up for which he became known on the continent.

  • Here it was a 4-2-3-1 that became a 4-4-2 at times, with Danny Welbeck (£6.0m) leading the line on a quiet debut summed up by some decent hold-up play and a chance sent wide before his withdrawal at the break.

  • Joao Pedro (£7.5m) often drifted up alongside his former Brighton teammate but also frequently dropped deeper into the No10 role in search of possession and a line-breaking pass, though his final ball was lacking on this occasion.

  • The Brazilian’s propensity to step back into the attacking midfield zones against Juve was perhaps necessitated by the absence of Cole Palmer (£9.5m), who missed out with some “discomfort” that Alonso insisted was “not a big thing” but required caution:

“They had some discomfort; Cole with a contact injury and Levi [Colwill] as well. It’s not a big thing, but we want to be cautious because there’s no point in risking anything. So, we’ll go step by step, day by day.” – Xabi Alonso

  • As the quote above reveals, Levi Colwill (£5.0m) was another absentee from this match for similar reasons to Palmer, who was pictured doing individual work at Chelsea’s open training session on Tuesday while the centre-back missed that session entirely.

  • The Blues are next in action against AC Milan on Saturday (8th August) before facing Malaysian club Johor Darul Ta’zim the following day, so we’ll keep an eye out for any pre- and post-match updates on the duo’s conditions then. In any case, Alonso is probably right to be cautious in his approach with the pair given Palmer struggled with a recurring groin injury last term while Colwill missed almost the entirety of the 2025/26 campaign after suffering an ACL injury during his last pre-season.

  • Elsewhere, teenage wideman Geovany Quenda (£5.5m) put in a promising debut display on the right side of Chelsea’s midfield, combining defensive workrate with heavy involvement in much of his new club’s good efforts going forward.

  • There were question marks after the 19-year-old’s arrival from Sporting CP regarding whether he would be a wing-back in Alonso’s usual three-at-the-back system or an actual wide midfielder, but on this occasion he was the latter and linked up well with new right-back Marco Palestra (£5.5m); so too did Estevao (£6.5m) when he came on at the interval.

  • There was also a debut for 21-year-old Belgian goalkeeper Mike Penders (£4.5m), signed from BlueCo sister club Strasbourg. Penders replaced Robert Sanchez (£5.0m) at half-time and we’ve already heard suggestions from Alonso that the No1 jersey could be up for grabs, so all eyes will be on who’s between the posts – and how they perform.

  • Fellow new signings Maxence Lacroix (£6.0m) and Morgan Rogers (£7.5m) remain uninvolved for now as they enjoy post-World Cup breaks, Enzo Fernandez (£7.0m) and Reece James (£5.5m) likewise.

  • In the meantime, it was Jorrel Hato (£4.5m) starting at left-back again following Marc Cucurella’s departure, with Tosin Adarabioyo (£4.5m) the man chosen to partner Wesley Fofana (£5.0m) in Colwill’s absence.

  • Fofana is suspended domestically until September 6 (Gameweek 3) so with Trevoh Chalobah headed to Como, on current evidence we’d expect a duo of Colwill and Lacroix come Gameweek 1 provided both men are at full fitness.

  • However, Chelsea certainly have no shortage of defensive options, and club captain James will add to that – be it as a right-back and/or potentially a right-sided centre-back – upon his return. There are also reports of an agreement being close for Rayo Vallecano left-back Pep Chavarria.

  • Moises Caicedo (£5.5m) skippered the troops in James’s stead for his own first pre-season outing and there was an impressive performance from 16-year-old Mahdi Nicoll-Jazuli alongside the Ecuadorian. Nicoll-Jazuli has played among the most minutes of any Chelsea midfielder in pre-season so far and has been among the stand-out performers of Alonso’s short reign, though whether his involvement remains as frequent when the likes of Rogers, Palmer and Enzo are back in the frame is another matter.

  • And finally, there was a first Chelsea appearance for Mykhailo Mudryk in 20 months, just days after the Ukrainian’s banned substance-related suspension was ended. Mudryk replaced fellow substitute Nicolas Jackson (£6.5m) – making his own comeback in Blue after a year away on loan with Bayern Munich – in a pre-planned change late on to a warm reception. Both men have been linked with moves away from Stamford Bridge, something we’ll be tracking over the coming weeks before Deadline Day.

I literally just got bottomed on the last article. My first and hopefully last.

My brother's and sisters....my 4 m defender. I can't decide which of the two Ipswich lads to pick. Leaning towards Davis as he is a bit of a differential. Any help is gratefully received

    A) Leif Davis

    B) Diop

Diop + Aznou for me. Aznou breaks into the team this year. It's a punt, if he doesn't then it's no love lost as I'll probably WC once the window has closed. Diop's place seems secure albeit not great fixtures. 2/3rd on bench behind Gomez

Halland says he is tired and needs a holiday, comments that were made in the last few days. So should we have him? How about a team of players that have had a good rest?

Google AI gave me this to the question 'make an fpl team of players that have had a good rest over the summer, not going deep into the world cup'.

    Donnarumma, Kinsky
    Calafiori, Truffert, Tarkowski, Mukiele, Udogie
    Palmer, Foden, Szoboszlai, Gibbs-White, Wharton
    Šeško, Pedro, Welbeck

I wouldn't go with Welbeck or Wharton, but you get the point.
Easy to make a bench boost team as well.

Going without Haaland would be such an easy decision, just pick Bruno over him. Makes team a bit better as well, can even have Gabriel with Bruno. Personally hope Haaland takes some time off.

I currently have Mukiele, but is he worth the £0.5m over the likes of Alderete or Ballard here?!

    1. BR510
      1 month, 15 days ago

I really like Mukiele as a pick because he gets forward but also gets defcon in the tougher matches. Not many other fullbacks offer this, if any

    2. Tomerick
      • 12 Years

There was a point I had Alderere last season and consistently lost out to Mukiele. Changed it up on wild card and didn’t regret it. Backing Mukiele this season.

He's definitely worth the extra 0.5 providing he stays at RB. If Ballard or Alderete don't play, I'd expect Mukiele to play CH. Alderete hasn't played a pre season game yet.

Also, to cavaet, Mukiele had to come off the other day and don't forget we're in Europe this season

I see predicted line-ups were recently updated (4th Aug) but Gabriel Magalhaes still has the photo of Gabriel Paulista (gone since 2017), Bournemouth's Rayan is a right winger, with Tavernier probably on the left, and then there's Lacroix starting for both Chelsea and Crystal Palace. I hope at least the first issue can be fixed after 9 years.

Yeah, looks good, very tempting to leave Haaland out. Bruno can match him in all GWs apart from GW3, where Isak & Semenyo might become captain material, or maybe free hit is an option.

Yeah, this post aligns with my thoughts. I'll FH in GW3 if Haaland looks like going ballistic. That said, if Isak shows form then I might not need to.

It could work. Even if Haaland hauls GW1, a quality bench boost can cover it.

    2. Captain Mal
      • 2 Years

Solid plan. I'd throw Neco in the mix. Better CS odds than Canvot in 1,3,5. You don't need him in 2, so you are only compromising GW4, which isn't that bad, considering how one-sided Glasner vs Emery is: 5 wins, 2 draws in 7 matches, aggregate score 19-4, kept a CS 4 times.

      1. Mother Farke
        • 2 Years
        1 month, 15 days ago

My thinking with Canvot is he'll mop up the DEFCONS in those away games in particular. Palace only play Man City from last years top 10 in their first 6. There's potential in their fixtures.

        1. Captain Mal
          • 2 Years
          1 month, 15 days ago

Yeah, nothing wrong with Canvot, very solid pick. The logic behind Williams would be that an early WC allows a more aggressive approach. Defcon specialists are great long-term assets, but in a 5-GW window you'd hope that Williams gets a couple of attacking returns and - combined with the slightly better CS odds - outscores Canvot. Worth pointing out that both will play under a new manager, so it's all guesswork, even more so than usual.

Not sure with Guehi an option at LCB. He's also not pain free from the last seasons injury

Really failing to comprehend this strategy, people talking about Coventry City like they're Jose Mourinho's Chelsea that conceded only 15 goals in the entire PL season in 2004/05. Hull can easily score against them, too.

I did it a couple seasons ago for triple West Ham defence at home to Southampton and they conceded in the 93rd minute to wipe it all out. It’s painful when it doesn’t work

I've gone for Verbruggen myself initially, but thinking the £4.5m goalkeepers may be duds. The £5.0m goalkeepers look far better to me, so may rejig and go for one of those to be honest.

Verbruggen because his back up for 4m means I don’t have to worry about injury\red card whilst spending bare minimum.

Are we thinking Guehi starts ahead of Gvardiol and Dias?! And not sure Gomez is a good option, I'd downgrade to a £4.5m midfielder, and upgrade one of your £4.5m defenders to a £5.0m one, not sure both Verbruggen and Kinsky are needed, but understand you're on a BB GW1, so GG!

Good point about Guehi. Might get some extra rest after world cup.

Guehi and Gomez could become Neco and Ndiaye/Le Fee, for instance

I'm here right now. Hoping that the Ipswich keeper comes in at 4m since Walton is injured.

    Kinsky Palmer
    Calafiori Mosquera VvD Gvardiol Davis
    Bruno Mbeumo Palmer Szoboszlai Gross
    Isak Pedro I.Jesus

The last fwd slot is a bit of a toss between DCL, Solanke, Jesus. Will see who I feel like closer.

I'm pretty resolved to go Bruno no Haaland first two weeks. In GW3 I can do Bruno + Isak > Haaland and 4.5m fodder.

I think DCL is best for that FWD slot as Jesus and Gross both have difficult fixtures in 2 that you wont want to play them in

If I want Haaland cap then yeah I would. The alternative is to sell Fernandes, Pedro, Palmer in a hit. But there are options basically come GW3 if I want to go Haaland. It's possible I won't.

    4. zon
      • 11 Years

I've just realized there's a case going without Haaland from the start. His workload has been enormous and hence he misses large part of preseason with new manager. Might take time to get back to full fitness and adapt.

      1. Camzy
        • 16 Years

If I'm gonna cap Bruno in GW1 vs Hull, and then GW2 it's Palace away for City, I think I like going without since it also beefs up my BBGW1.

I can always rearrange later on early WC.
