CHAMPIONSHIP
| TEAM | POINTS | REASON |
|---|---|---|
| 1. West Ham United | 91 | West Ham should enter the season with one of the strongest squads in the division following relegation. Their resources and overall quality make them our favourites to win the title. |
| 2. Burnley | 86 | Recent Championship success makes Burnley difficult to overlook. Despite changes over the summer, they should have enough quality and experience to challenge for an immediate Premier League return. |
| 3. Wolverhampton Wanderers | 82 | Wolves should possess one of the strongest squads at this level. There are enough uncertainties to keep them outside our automatic places, but anything below a serious promotion challenge would disappoint. |
| 4. Middlesbrough | 79 | Middlesbrough were already among the division’s stronger sides and should compete towards the top again. Another play-off campaign looks likely, with the automatic places also within reach. |
| 5. Birmingham City | 76 | Birmingham could be one of the big improvers. They established themselves comfortably last season and have the resources to take another significant step towards promotion. |
| 6. Sheffield United | 74 | Last season fell well below expectations, but there is enough quality and Championship experience here to expect a response. A return to the play-offs looks achievable. |
| 7. Wrexham | 72 | Wrexham adapted impressively to Championship football and came close to the promotion places. Another year of experience at this level could help them go one better. |
| 8. Southampton | 70 | Southampton have the quality to finish considerably higher, but their points deduction immediately makes the task harder. We still expect them to secure one of the expanded play-off positions. |
| 9. Norwich City | 68 | Norwich should remain competitive towards the top half. However, we have several sides ahead of them who look better equipped to sustain a promotion challenge. |
| 10. Derby County | 66 | Derby made significant progress last season. Another step forward looks possible, although they may just fall short of the play-offs. |
| 11. Millwall | 64 | Millwall enjoyed an excellent campaign last time out, but repeating those heights could prove difficult. We still expect another comfortable top-half season. |
| 12. Swansea City | 62 | Swansea look capable of another steady campaign without quite possessing enough to break into the promotion picture. |
| 13. Bristol City | 60 | Bristol City have become an established Championship side and another secure mid-table finish looks the most likely outcome. |
| 14. Stoke City | 59 | Stoke have struggled to turn their potential into consistent results in recent seasons. Some improvement looks possible, but a major promotion push would require a significant step forward. |
| 15. Watford | 57 | Watford should have enough quality to avoid being dragged into serious trouble, although they remain difficult to back for a sustained promotion challenge. |
| 16. Queens Park Rangers | 55 | Defensive improvement could determine whether QPR climb higher. For now, another lower-mid-table campaign looks the safest prediction. |
| 17. West Bromwich Albion | 53 | West Brom have slipped considerably from their previous position among the Championship’s promotion contenders. We expect another difficult campaign, albeit without relegation. |
| 18. Preston North End | 51 | Preston regularly find ways to remain competitive at this level. Their ceiling may be limited, but their Championship experience could again prove valuable. |
| 19. Blackburn Rovers | 49 | Blackburn struggled last season and could face another battle towards the bottom. We have them surviving, but without much room to spare. |
| 20. Bolton Wanderers | 47 | Promotion brings a considerable step up in quality, but Bolton could adapt best of the newcomers. We think they have enough to secure survival. |
| 21. Portsmouth | 46 | Portsmouth have shown they can compete at Championship level, but this looks like another season where survival takes priority. |
| 22. Cardiff City | 43 | Cardiff return to a very competitive Championship. Their familiarity with the division should help, but we think they could fall narrowly short of survival. |
| 23. Charlton Athletic | 40 | Charlton managed to consolidate last season, but another year near the bottom looks likely. A stronger division could eventually catch up with them. |
| 24. Lincoln City | 36 | Lincoln face a huge challenge after stepping up. Competing against clubs with considerably greater resources makes them our early favourites for relegation. |
LEAGUE ONE
| TEAM | POINTS | REASON |
|---|---|---|
| 1. Luton Town | 88 | Luton are my pick to win the division. Last season didn’t deliver the promotion many expected, but another year of adjustment and a squad that should remain strong for League One level gives them an excellent opportunity to go again. |
| 2. Leicester City | 85 | Back-to-back relegations make Leicester extremely difficult to judge. Their resources and squad quality should dwarf much of the division, but the club’s recent decline makes me reluctant to automatically make them champions. |
| 3. Plymouth Argyle | 81 | Plymouth should be much better equipped for a promotion challenge. They look capable of turning themselves into one of the division’s most consistent sides. |
| 4. Sheffield Wednesday | 78 | Dropping from the Championship immediately puts Wednesday among the stronger clubs in League One. Recent instability provides some uncertainty, but they should still possess enough quality to challenge near the top. |
| 5. Huddersfield Town | 76 | Huddersfield have repeatedly entered League One seasons with promotion expectations without quite delivering. The potential remains obvious, though, and another play-off challenge looks likely. |
| 6. Stockport County | 74 | Stockport came agonisingly close to promotion last season, losing in the play-off final. That experience should keep them firmly in contention, although recovering from another near miss won’t necessarily be straightforward. |
| 7. MK Dons | 72 | Here’s one of the bigger calls. MK Dons arrive with momentum after promotion and are already being treated as unusually strong newcomers. Rather than merely targeting survival, they could immediately threaten the play-off positions. |
| 8. Bradford City | 70 | Bradford established themselves impressively following promotion last season. Another step forward could put them right on the edge of the promotion conversation. |
| 9. Blackpool | 68 | Blackpool underperformed last season relative to what many expected. There should be enough quality for improvement, but I’m not convinced they make the jump all the way into the play-offs. |
| 10. Oxford United | 66 | Relegation from the Championship gives Oxford experience of a higher level, but an immediate return is far from guaranteed. They could spend much of the campaign around the play-off conversation without quite getting there. |
| 11. Wycombe Wanderers | 64 | Wycombe remain one of the division’s more established and competitive sides. They should stay well clear of trouble, although several rivals look better equipped for promotion. |
| 12. Mansfield Town | 62 | Mansfield could again prove difficult opponents throughout the season. A comfortable mid-table finish feels more realistic than either a serious promotion challenge or relegation battle. |
| 13. Reading | 60 | Reading have the potential to finish considerably higher if everything comes together. For now, however, there are enough uncertainties to make another mid-table campaign the safer prediction. |
| 14. Barnsley | 59 | Barnsley have spent several seasons threatening to return to the Championship without completing the job. They enter this campaign with less momentum, so I’m predicting another step backwards. |
| 15. Doncaster Rovers | 57 | Doncaster showed enough last season to suggest they belong comfortably at this level. Another relatively secure campaign should follow, even if the top six remains out of reach. |
| 16. Wigan Athletic | 55 | Wigan look more likely to spend the season looking over their shoulders than challenging for promotion. However, their League One experience should be enough to keep them away from serious danger. |
| 17. Stevenage | 54 | Stevenage continue to outperform what their resources might suggest. I’m backing them to find another way to stay comfortably enough in the division. |
| 18. Notts County | 52 | Promotion brings Notts County back into League One for the first time in more than a decade. They could produce some excellent football, but adapting consistently across 46 matches makes a lower-half finish plausible. |
| 19. Peterborough United | 50 | Peterborough are traditionally associated with the upper end of League One, but current expectations are much lower. I think they survive, although this could be another uncomfortable season. |
| 20. Leyton Orient | 48 | Orient have fallen considerably from the side that recently challenged for promotion. They should have just enough to survive, but another battle towards the bottom looks possible. |
| 21. Cambridge United | 46 | Cambridge return to League One with momentum after promotion, but consolidating in the third tier represents a significant challenge. I have them narrowly doing enough. |
| 22. AFC Wimbledon | 43 | Wimbledon could find this season tougher after surviving their first campaign back in League One. The margins look extremely fine towards the bottom, and I’m predicting them to fall just short. |
| 23. Burton Albion | 40 | Burton have repeatedly found ways to survive at this level, but eventually those battles catch up with you. They enter the campaign among the relegation favourites and I’m backing this to be the year they go down. |
| 24. Bromley | 37 | Winning League Two was an outstanding achievement, but League One represents another significant step up. They begin among the relegation favourites, and survival would represent another major achievement. |
LEAGUE TWO
| TEAM | POINTS | REASON |
|---|---|---|
| 1. Salford City | 86 | Salford came extremely close last season, eventually losing in the play-off final. They look well equipped to respond rather than regress, so we’re backing them to go one better and win the title. |
| 2. Rotherham United | 83 | Dropping down from League One immediately makes Rotherham one of the stronger sides at this level. They have undergone changes after relegation, but an immediate promotion challenge looks realistic. |
| 3. Port Vale | 80 | Another relegated side who should have enough quality to compete towards the top. Their experience at a higher level gives them an advantage over much of the division, and we’re backing them for automatic promotion. |
| 4. Chesterfield | 77 | Chesterfield reached the play-offs last season and have established themselves as one of League Two’s stronger sides. They should be firmly involved in the promotion race again. |
| 5. Walsall | 74 | Last season ultimately disappointed, but Walsall still showed enough to suggest they can compete near the top. We’re backing them to recover and secure a play-off position. |
| 6. Barnet | 72 | Barnet enjoyed an impressive first season back in the EFL and should now be better prepared for this level. Rather than suffering second-season problems, we think they can push towards promotion. |
| 7. Grimsby Town | 70 | Grimsby reached the play-offs last season and look capable of challenging again. Competition for the top seven is fierce, but another strong campaign should keep them involved. |
| 8. Bristol Rovers | 68 | Bristol Rovers could be one of the division’s improvers. They finished last season strongly enough to offer encouragement and should be much closer to the promotion battle this time. |
| 9. Crewe Alexandra | 66 | Crewe remain capable of competing around the top half and could spend periods of the season threatening the play-offs. We have them falling just short. |
| 10. York City | 64 | This is one of our more ambitious predictions. York arrive from the National League with huge momentum and could adapt quickly enough to immediately establish themselves in the top half. |
| 11. Exeter City | 62 | Relegation gives Exeter experience of playing at a higher level, but that doesn’t guarantee an immediate promotion challenge. We think they’ll stabilise rather than bounce straight back. |
| 12. Gillingham | 60 | Gillingham should have enough to remain comfortably clear of trouble. However, there are several sides we trust more to sustain a serious promotion challenge. |
| 13. Crawley Town | 59 | Crawley survived a difficult campaign and enter this season with more optimism. A significant improvement towards mid-table looks possible without necessarily pushing them all the way into the play-offs. |
| 14. Colchester United | 57 | Colchester look capable of another secure League Two campaign. Breaking into the promotion picture may prove difficult, but they should have enough to avoid the bottom-end battle. |
| 15. Swindon Town | 56 | Swindon came close to the play-offs last season, but we’re predicting a step backwards. League Two looks extremely competitive at the top this year and maintaining that challenge could prove difficult. |
| 16. Oldham Athletic | 54 | Oldham successfully re-established themselves in the EFL last season. Consolidating again would represent another solid campaign, even if progress towards the play-offs has to wait. |
| 17. Northampton Town | 52 | Northampton arrive from League One but don’t necessarily look like an obvious bounce-back candidate. A season of rebuilding in the lower half looks more plausible. |
| 18. Fleetwood Town | 50 | Fleetwood look more likely to spend the campaign in the bottom half than around the promotion places. Their experience at this level should still keep them away from the most serious danger. |
| 19. Shrewsbury Town | 48 | Shrewsbury struggled last season and another difficult campaign looks possible. We think they’ll do enough to maintain their EFL status, but probably without much comfort. |
| 20. Rochdale | 46 | Rochdale return to the Football League after winning promotion through the National League play-offs. Survival should be the immediate priority, and we’re backing them to achieve it narrowly. |
| 21. Accrington Stanley | 44 | Accrington continue to operate with fewer resources than many of their rivals. Their ability to compete at this level shouldn’t be underestimated, but another relegation battle looks likely. |
| 22. Tranmere Rovers | 42 | Tranmere narrowly escaped relegation last season. Unless they improve considerably, another season spent fighting towards the bottom looks likely. |
| 23. Cheltenham Town | 39 | Cheltenham enter the campaign with plenty of uncertainty and could struggle for consistency. We think they’ll find themselves right in the relegation battle. |
| 24. Newport County | 36 | Newport only narrowly survived last season and again look vulnerable. With several clubs around them strengthening or arriving with promotion momentum, we’re predicting their EFL stay to come to an end. |
