We’ve got a flurry of Scout Reports and transfer summaries to bring you over the weekend, ahead of what will likely be a busy deadline day.

We start with Nico Gonzalez (£5.5m), who this week completed his switch from Manchester City to Newcastle United to the tune of £52m.

The Spanish midfielder provides a needed boost to the central options available to Magpies boss Matthias Jaissle, who reportedly spoke personally to Gonzalez repeatedly in recent weeks to make clear his importance to his new-look Newcastle side.

But how might Gonzalez fare in Fantasy Premier League (FPL) now that he has left a star-studded City set-up to join the ongoing rebuild at St James’ Park?

That’s what we’re here to assess!

BRIEF HISTORY

First, a bit of background.

Prior to joining City during the 2024/25 winter transfer window, Gonzalez was enjoying the most prolific campaign of his career from an attacking perspective, delivering five goals and three assists from 17 appearances for FC Porto in Liga Portugal.

The 24-year-old was with the Portuguese giants for a season and a half before his £50m move to Manchester, having spent the 2022/23 season on loan with Valencia from Barcelona – whose famed La Masia academy he is a product of.

2023/24Porto20 (5)1,71121

*Gonzalez did bag an ‘FPL assist’ in 2024/25

Internationally, Gonzalez has been capped at multiple youth levels for Spain but is yet to earn a senior national team appearance.

That’s hardly an indictment of his talent, though, given the breadth of options available to the reigning World and European champions in the middle of the park – including former City teammate Rodri, who Pep Guardiola once described Gonzalez as a “mini” version of.

HOW DOES GONZALEZ FIT AT NEWCASTLE?

We’ll leave the country question to Luis de la Fuente but for Newcastle, at least, Gonzalez is expected to become a regular starter in a way he hasn’t been since arriving in the Premier League some 18 months ago.

“He trained with us and he looks sharp.

“He is an option.

“It will take time [to learn Jaissle’s methods], and I cannot tell you how long it takes, but he’s a smart player. He has huge potential and already brings so much quality to the squad. So, I think he will adapt fast into our system, into our way of playing, and then we can enjoy.” – Matthias Jaissle on Nico Gonzalez, speaking on Thursday

He should step into one of the two holding midfield roles in Jaissle’s 4-2-3-1, the formation used by the German manager in pre-season, Gameweek 1 and the midweek Carabao Cup win over West Bromwich Albion.

Against Liverpool last weekend it was teenage debutant Sean Steur (£5.0m) alongside 20-year-old Lewis Miley (£5.5m) – who was replaced by Aladji Bamba (£5.0m), also 20 – in that double pivot, highlighting just how thin Newcastle’s squad had become in central midfield following a few high-profile departures earlier this summer and the injury-enforced absence of Joelinton (£5.5m). In the cup, Steur partnered Jacob Ramsey (£5.0m) and came off for Miley soon after the hour mark.

Given his relative top-level experience, Gonzalez starting consistently alongside one of Steur or Miley – perhaps more likely the latter, who particularly impressed in the draw with Liverpool – is what we expect to see in the coming weeks. Joelinton’s eventual return would give Jaissle another senior figure to chuck into the mix, but the timeline on that is currently unclear.

DEFCON POTENTIAL

Given he should now be playing the majority of minutes week in, week out, Gonzalez could enter the FPL thinking in a way he never really could as a rotation risk at City.

The interest primarily stems from his potential for defensive contribution (DefCon) points.

Gonzalez averaged 11.57 qualifying defensive actions per 90 minutes across his 25 Premier League appearances last season, an eye-catching rate not far short of the likes of Chelsea’s Moises Caicedo (£5.5m, 11.81), Everton’s James Garner (£6.0m, 12.08), Leeds’ Ethan Ampadu (£5.5m, 12.11) and Rodri (12.15).

Above: Nico Gonzalez v other Newcastle midfielders: DefCons per 90 minutes in 2025/26

Not only did Nico’s figure trump those of Newcastle’s midfielders, it was also superior to popular FPL picks like Granit Xhaka (£5.5m), Declan Rice (£7.5m) and Anton Stach (£6.0m).

At Newcastle, a team that typically controls possession much less than City, it would be fair to expect Gonzalez’s defensive numbers to remain comparably high, if not improve, if he is asked to bear the brunt of the defensive responsibilities in midfield.

Above: Lewis Miley hit the DefCon threshold from Newcastle’s central midfield in Gameweek 1

Miley banked DefCon points in Gameweek 1 (see above). Steur and Ramsey racked up 10 and 11 contributions in the EFL Cup in midweek, with the former managing his figure in just 65 minutes. Joe Willock and Bamba hit the 12-mark in the final friendly against Strasbourg. We could go on!

GOAL THREAT: CITY V PORTO

At City, Gonzalez’s attacking threat was near non-existant.

A shot evey 114 minutes, a chance created every 146 minutes in 2025/26.

His sole goal last season came from outside the box, indeed.

However, charged with a more box-to-box role at Porto, he averaged an effort every 53 minutes in his final Liga Portugal campaign in 2024/25.

Naturally, you can’t have everything – in that final half-season at Porto, his DefCons per 90 minutes were down at 7.84!

OVERALL FPL POTENTIAL

Gonzalez appears more of a replacement for Sandro Tonali (£5.5m) than Bruno Guimaraes (£7.0m). Someone willing to do the defensive dirty work and progress the ball to his more attack-minded teammates.

Given the likelihood of Jaissle using him in a double pivot of a 4-2-3-1 rather than as a box-crashing ‘eight’ in a Howe-esque 4-3-3, goal threat will probably be minimal. Steur and Miley combined for just one penalty box touch, and no shots in the area, in Gameweek 1, for example.

So, perhaps little chance of a repeat of his comparatively goal-crazed final half-season at Porto.

Regardless, his evident DefCon potential and modest starting price meas Gonzalez is certainly a budget-friendly midfield option worth monitoring in FPL. Mamadou Sangare (£5.6m) seems to be the benchmark so far but it’s worth keeping tabs on Gonzalez’s figures in the coming weeks to see if he can provide Ampaduan levels of reliability for 4- or 5-point floors.

Is it just me or is the FPL page a complete mess this year? On Firefox it keeps flickering something on top of the page and if I try to click on login it directs me to the puma page. On Chrome the login is just an infinite loop.

If I reboot my computer, it works, but I don't want to keep on doing that every time I want to log in.

Not really, they've trimmed so much of their squad away it should be fairly predictable, particularly before CL kicks in.
When Doku returns Foden will lose out and Semenyo will go right side. Foden's completely nosedived since '24. Hopefully he regains form

Hmm not so sure, Foden played 10 first game with Cherki on bench.

It will just be the usual rotation, let’s not fool ourselves, even Semenyo will be subbed the odd game

Foden played 10 first game as he did preseason, was ineffective and then Cherki came on and won the game for them. When they're playing their best XI Cherki will be there. Not really a headache until UCL starts up

Enzo playing him wide and moving him inside when bringing fresh wingers in 60-70 min.

Cherki played in Foden's position tonight (no 10). When Doku is back and they sign another winger / that new Brazilian starts I'd be worried about Foden.

      I own Foden btw.

Has to be cherki based on 2 games, 2 assists then 2 goals.
Whilst Foden played lots of preseason, Maresca like him. They have alot of CL games to play also. When Doku returns, Cherki is showing he is better in the 10. Can cover any assists foden could get and he is a much better finisher.

Wish one the reporters would straight out ask Maresca.

This. He must have had some assurances of playing you would think, especially for his England career. £150,000 /w helps but Martinez and Kamara are reportedly on that at Villa.

Verbal assurances ain't worth nothing. It is illegal under Fifa to insert any clauses regarding having to start or play and I won't trust anything Arteta says.
Mosquera does not have Arteta's full confidence following the CL mistake hence buying Konsa so Konsa will replace him by week 3.

        2. Utopsis
          • 6 Years

Agreed, but Arteta tends to pick players on form rather than reputation.

Look at Gyokeres, or Zubimendi for example. Relative big money signing, both now out of the first XI.

Konsa would have to earn that spot (or be quite fortunate with injuries to others) - it won't be given to him.

            Completely different with those two.
Arteta favourites at the time were Merino and injured havertz so Gyokeres started and was poor in his first 7 games. Instant Havertz returned from injury, straight in.
            Same with Zubimendi.

Mosquera situation is different. Made mistake in CL, has shaky performance in him hence not fully trusted by Arteta hence they went to buy Konsa as he fit saliba profil more than mosquera, is calmer and more mature hence will start wk 3 after wk 2 cameo.

His embargoed press conference for this GW also had this:
"his ideal squad is 2 players in every position, supplemented by 3/4 academy players"

Tbf he had zero World Cup and was poor in the last few games of last season too.

It has been a bit unexpected, and also why his ownership is low and no CC was picking or even drafting him

I forced my brother to play FPL this season for the very first time to assert my FPL superiority. He used the auto-select feature five minutes before the GW1 deadline and has the likes of Guéhi, Cherki, Szoboszlai, and Palmer. He has absolutely destroyed me over these two weeks. Oh well!

Champions League fixtures should be announced today I think (29th)
Worth keeping an eye on City here as their schedule will be Coventry at home on 5th Sep, UCL MD1 on 8-10th Sep and Man Utd away on 13th Sep
If say that UCL game was Barcelona away, you'd worry a bit more about rotation and early subs for Coventry perhaps, although it being early in the season helps

White Gvardiol De Cuyper Justin Kayode
    Palmer Cherki Szboszlai Tzolis Sangare
    Haaland Pedro Goalazo

Any better 4.5's? Haven't properly wrapped my head around the defcons as I haven't played this game in years after being active for over a decade

I've seen some discussion about what Maresca will do when/if they get Enzo and Ndiyae. But didn't he basically have 2 teams while at Chelsea and they where in CL? Like one XI for CL and one for PL? Sure 1 or 2 PL XIers where also in CL, but it regularly seemed like he rotated the whole team.

So maybe at least one of Foden and Cherki are pretty much safe for the most part, for PL fixtures.

Rayan Cherki’s post match interview with canal (from the Bluemoon forums)

Interviewer : “There seems to be an extraordinary desire from you to express yourself on the pitch. Did being substituted in the first game sting a little and wake you up in some way?”

Cherki : “No, it didn’t wake me up at all because I was never “asleep,” so to speak. But obviously, it affected me a lot, and I had to show the coach that I simply want to play.”

Interviewer : “The first half was a little difficult for the team, but perhaps even more so for you personally. Then you really took off in the second half.”

Cherki : “Yeah. We’d worked on something at the start of the week, and throughout the week, that didn’t really work in the first half because Crystal Palace defended very well.

The idea was to find me between the lines, which wasn’t easy for us or for me. So I really wasn’t happy with my first half, and even less so when I saw the coach send a player to warm up to replace me at halftime.”

Interviewer : “Was there an exchange between you and the coach in the dressing room at halftime?”

Cherki : “I told him, “Give me five minutes and you won’t need to make the change anymore.””

Interviewer : “And the goal came within the first five minutes?”

Cherki : “Yeah. I didn’t have a choice anyway. I wasn’t good in the first half and I had to make up for that poor first half.”

Interviewer : “Tell us about that first goal, because it was pretty special.”

Cherki : “I don’t know, everyone keeps telling me it was special. For me, the ball just stays at my feet. Obviously it all happens quickly, but I wouldn’t really know how to explain it.”

“It’s a touch, a little cut, then a toepoke, and I’m lucky enough that it goes in.”

Interviewer : “And that little touch with the left foot too?”

Cherki : “Yeah. But one thing I’m also really not happy about is that I didn’t provide Erling with enough chances. I need to do better with that.”

“He knows it. Next week, he’ll be fed like he’s never been fed before.”

Interviewer : “You celebrated the goals together. You can sense there’s a lot of competitiveness between the two of you.”

Cherki : “Oh yeah. He’s on two goals, I’m on two goals. He knows it’s going to be a competition between me and him this year, even though I think he’ll win it comfortably.”

“But I’m here to keep him on his toes and, above all, to help him score goals.”

Interviewer : “You’re coming off a “double double,” as they say in basketball. Is that the objective again this season? More goals, more assists?”

Cherki : “Of course, of course. That’s the objective. But that objective is small compared to the collective objective.”

“This year, we have to be strong, like we were in the second half, but over the full 90 minutes.”

Interviewer : “One last thing, Rayan. When you scored that goal, you looked towards the bench. You seemed to have a bit of anger in you. What were you feeling at that moment?”

Cherki : “I think I’ve got a story to write with the new coach. He’s here to push me, and I’m also here to push him.”

“It definitely fires you up when you know he was planning to take you off at halftime.”

Cherki is a top playmaker. Impressive stats last season. I think he could get 20 assists this season & some goals.

So many midfield options at City. Think Foden @ 7.0 could make a mockery of that price. He seems more nailed than Cherki imo.

Haaland, Foden & Gvardiol will be the core for me but Cherki has a case tbh.

I'm confident in saying that there is no one like him in the league.

His command of the football in possession is unbelievable, and he always has 1 full second of time more than anyone else, even in the tightest of spaces.

Issue with him is he seems like the type of player who could lack consistency - switches off in games and only ignites when something fires him up. So he might frustrate owners a lot - but the talent is undeniable.

TC Haaland after WC2 (without Cherki). What would be your bench here, including GK?

    Verbruggen Tzolakis
Calafiori White Gvardiol De Cuyper Ajer
    Palmer (V)Cherki Szoboszlai Odegaard Sangare
    (TC)Haaland Pedro Wissa

Currently: Tzolakis (but Villa is worse than Leeds), Pedro (yikes), Wissa (Bournemouth leaky?), White (!!!)

The strength of Arsenal's defence is my confusion here

WC 2 without Cherki really sucks. I should have loaded up on City but wasn't pleased with their GW 1 performance. If only I checked Palace's squad before that game. Gotta fix that.

TC Haaland locked in lol. Bench would be Sangare, 1 Arse defender, Ajer. Play Tzolakis especially if you'll play de Cuyper too.

Hi, does anyone know FPL Harry's team id? Reason I'm asking is, it's come to my attention a chap in my work league has exactly the same team as him. I know it's only GW2 but it looks very suspicious. All of a sudden last season he got a great rank, won €1,600 out of the €2,400 work league pot. In the spirit of the game, this is cheating simply copying an elite players team! I know I can see Harry's moves on social media but I'd really like to keep his team on a tab on my phone for quick comparisons. I think his name is Harry Daniels, I've joined his league, but there's tens of thousands of teams in it, and it's not easy to find! It's against the spirit of the game copying his team! If anyone has his team id, I'd be so grateful. Thank you.

Season already over. Started with mgw and kadioglu who both dropped in price. Semenyo useless, bruno and mbeumo useless. This game is awful... price changes at the start of the season massively compound the luck factor of picking the players who haul at the start.

If you picked de cuyper, cherki, sangare at the start not only do you get their lucky hauls, you also get rewarded with price rises while people who have similar players in thr same slots who happened to not haul get punished. So you're not only 20-40 points behind due to bs luck variance, you also get a .4 team value swing in your disfavor

If you pick highly owned players who blank, they are at risk of dropping.

If you pick low owned players who haul, they will likely rise.

Low owned players are low owned for a reason - the vast majority of players decide against picking them in favour of others. So a high risk, high reward strategy based on the basic principles of supply and demand.

This is literally the fabric of society - investing in stocks being a prime example. Exactly the same concept.

High risk high reward is just a fancy way of saying "I relied on luck" so thanks for just reinforcing my point. Luck based joke game

Surely on WC?.. that's just a huge knee jerk move tbh.. but probably pays off in this joke season

Yeah, tbh I seen utd play Hull and needed to fix it

Wish I had to fix it, but that was the case unfortunately, Haaland, Cherki and Gvardiol all came in though

Maybe you were right but then again maybe not. Let's see what happens tomorrow. I captained haaland but wouldnt be surprised if bruno rewards those who captained him.

    Mbeumo & Mosquera > Cherki & Gvardiol?

Have 0.4m swing available, reckon can wait till deadline?

Mbeumo to Cherki is going to be a very popular move. I might be one of them.

As a Haaland + Semenyo owner, I'm weighing up a triple up. The caveat being I don't think three City attackers v United in GW4 is a good idea. Want to save my FH, too.

Personally seeing how I can keep Mbuemo and get Cherki.

      Only way atm is, Lammens + Maguire + Hinshelswood to 4m + 4.5m + Cherki for -4

Does Martinez going to Chelsea make their defence better picks? I gambled on Palestra early season hoping he would get an attacking return and inevitably rise in price. A little knock in training and he now will fall tonight.

Can do straight swap to Gvardiol...

Their GW3 opponents makes this switch easier

But if you don't have De Cuyper already, I'd consider him the priority

Their defense is never going to improve, might concede less goals though.

Bit harsh! Sanchez is the weak link, I think we get much better with a world class goalie

This, getting rid of the weak link after many years.

Needs more than a better keeper but Alonso is shrewd. Is Martinez deal still on?

Less goals not enough. More cleansheets needed to maye Chelsea defenders a better bet.

Morning folks, in order to afford palmer in 2 week’s I would have to get Foden this week over Cherki

Should I get Foden or forget about Palmer and get Cherki this week ?

      Who'll be your GW4 cap without Palmer? I guess that's a factor

Foden seems involved enough, but his accuracy is annoying

Hull were always going to be up for it on the first game of the season at home in front of all their fans. I really wouldnt read too much in to that game. If united lose 0-2 tomorrow against Ipswich that's very different but I dont see it happening.
