With the opening round complete, attention now turns to Matchweek 2 of WSL Fantasy.

Our expert Joe is back to reveal his latest squad, running through his planned transfers, key selection decisions and captaincy ahead of the deadline.

Here’s how his team is shaping up for the second round.

TEAM REVEAL

GOALKEEPERS

Matchweek 1 went fairly well for my team, with 86 points putting me 1,379th overall. I’m happy enough with that start and hope to push on in Matchweek 2 this weekend.

There won’t be any changes in goal. Fran Bentley faces Newcastle at home on Saturday, while Hannah Hampton travels to Manchester United on Sunday. That allows me to bring the Chelsea goalkeeper in if I’m not satisfied with Bentley’s score.

The rotation didn’t work out particularly well last weekend. Hampton lost her clean sheet late on, while Bentley scored zero after I brought her in and Bristol City conceded four against Sunderland.

Despite that, I’m still happy with the pairing. Having two opportunities for a clean sheet each week could prove useful between now and Matchweek 4.

DEFENDERS

I’m really happy with Kerstin Casparij and Ellie Carpenter as my premium defenders.

Casparij produced an 11-point haul in just 61 minutes, thanks to an assist, clean sheet and attacking actions point. She still looks like the major attacking threat we saw last season, creating four chances worth 0.51 xA.

Her early substitution was slightly concerning, especially as she only just passed the 60-minute mark. However, I’m still confident she offers great value, even at £8.0m.

As expected, Carpenter effectively played as a right winger in Matchweek 1. Despite returning seven points, I’m disappointed she didn’t produce an even bigger haul! The Chelsea defender created three big chances, missed one herself and recorded 1.02 xG+xA.

Those numbers make Carpenter a lock in my team for now.

I’m also sticking with Ona Batlle as my Arsenal defender. She offered little attacking threat last weekend, but Arsenal looked solid defensively. A home meeting with Crystal Palace provides another good opportunity for a clean sheet.

Alanna Kennedy ended up as my London City defender, and I’m fairly happy with that decision. London City came within seconds of a clean sheet before conceding in the 100th minute.

Kennedy looked good in midfield alongside Grace Geyoro and earned a defensive actions point. Playing in midfield should continue to help her in that area. We’ll also see London City’s line-up before the deadline, giving me the chance to react if Kennedy doesn’t start.

My biggest defensive concern is Ella Morris. She didn’t start last week and Tottenham’s 2pm Sunday fixture means we won’t see their line-up during the substitution period.

I’m not planning to sell her yet. Only three of my outfield players feature on Saturday, so I’d need all three to blank before requiring every substitute. Toko Koga also came off injured on Sunday, which could increase Morris’ chances of starting this weekend.

MIDFIELDERS

Alexia Putellas will likely start Matchweek 2 with my captaincy. Her attacking numbers disappointed in the opener, with just 0.10 xG+xA, but London City performed well as a team. Saturday’s trip to West Ham also looks appealing.

Unless Putellas hauls, I’ll probably move the armband on Sunday. Bunny Shaw and Lauren James both provide strong alternatives.

Another blank could also put Putellas’ place in my squad under pressure. Teammate Delphine Cascarino (£5.5m) created four chances worth 1.23 xA last weekend and could become an option.

I spent plenty of pre-season talking up Daniëlle van de Donk and her value at £4.5m. Thankfully, she backed that up with nine points against Manchester United.

The Dutch international continued her impressive pre-season form with an excellent flick to score late on. She also accumulated 0.35 xG and could provide a differential captaincy option over Putellas.

It may still be early, but both James and Lauren Hemp already feel like long-term locks.

James excelled despite Chelsea struggling to finish their chances. She produced 1.38 xG+xA, created the joint-most chances, took the most shots and completed the most dribbles in the match. Even with only one goal, she still finished on 13 points.

Attacking action points make both James and Hemp particularly valuable. Hemp failed to convert 1.09 xG+xA into a direct attacking return in Matchweek 1, yet still collected five points thanks to her 14 attacking actions.

The pair recorded the most attacking actions in WSL Fantasy, giving both an excellent points floor even when they don’t score or assist.

Mariona Caldentey completes my midfield this week. Like Putellas, her attacking numbers disappointed in Matchweek 1. She managed just one shot from outside the box and failed to create a chance.

However, Crystal Palace at home looks too good to sell her ahead of. I’ll reassess Caldentey when Arsenal’s fixtures become tougher from Matchweek 3 onwards.

FORWARDS

Shaw produced exactly the sort of explosive performance we’ve come to expect on Sunday. Her brace and maximum bonus delivered a 14-point return.

Aston Villa’s 1-1 draw away to Chelsea may suggest this isn’t an ideal fixture for the Manchester City striker. However, Villa conceded 3.6 xG and allowed 35 shots, including 24 from inside the box.

If they give City similar opportunities, Shaw could punish them. That makes her my likely captaincy option for Sunday.

Despite Liverpool beating Charlton 4-0, Beata Olsson barely featured in an attacking sense and recorded just seven touches. I’m still happy to give her another week.

Liverpool face Tottenham at home, which looks tougher on paper. However, only Leicester conceded more away goals than Spurs in last season’s WSL. Olsson also impressed in this fixture previously, scoring from 0.96 xG.

She’ll likely start as my first substitute and come in if one of my London City players blanks. If I do sell, Kathleen McGovern (£6.5m) of Newcastle and Madison Haley (£6.5m) of Brighton are potential replacements. Haley’s full name and Brighton status are confirmed by the official WSL player profile.

Finally, Claudia Mummery-Walker will most likely be my second option from the bench. The striker produced 0.38 xG against Watford on Friday, so she isn’t a bad option at £4.5m.

Hopefully, though, my London City players perform and I don’t need her!

For now, I’m hoping to roll both transfers and take four into Matchweek 3. The fixture swing looks much sharper then, and another round should also give us a clearer picture of the best options at different price points.
