All 20 Premier League teams’ starts to the season are being analysed in our Half-Term Report series.

Next up are Crystal Palace, who have endured a difficult opening five Gameweeks under new head coach, Pierre Sage.

Only Chief Scout members can read these articles – but you can join them for free before the Gameweek 6 deadline by taking advantage of our free trial.

RESULTS SO FAR

GWResultPalace’s xGPalace’s xGC
1Everton 2-0 Crystal Palace1.961.12
2Crystal Palace 1-4 Man City0.662.21
3Fulham 2-3 Crystal Palace1.973.14
4Crystal Palace 2-3 Ipswich0.621.68
5Leeds 0-0 Crystal Palace1.061.31

It has been a difficult start for Palace, who head into the international break 15th after winning just one of their opening five matches.

Their only victory came at Fulham in Gameweek 3, before another defeat followed against promoted Ipswich Town. Palace did at least register their first clean sheet of the season in a goalless draw with Leeds United last time out.

The underlying numbers offer little encouragement. Palace have lost the expected goals battle in four of their five matches, including their 3-2 victory over Fulham.

They have accumulated 6.27 xG while allowing 9.46 xGC, although the first-half red card against Ipswich and a meeting with Manchester City provide some context.

The underlying numbers reflect Palace’s difficult start.

No Premier League side has recorded a worse expected goals conceded total.

LINE-UP LESSONS

Chris Richards (£4.9m) is the only Palace player to have played every minute of the opening five Gameweeks.

Daichi Kamada (£5.0m), Adam Wharton (£5.4m) and Tyrick Mitchell (£4.5m) have also started all five matches. Kamada began the season in central midfield but has been operating as more of a ’10’ recently.

Above: Daichi Kamada’s average positions per Gameweek

Wing-back Anan Khalaili (£5.0m) and attacking midfielder Yéremy Pino (£5.5m) have started the last four matches after beginning Gameweek 1 on the bench for fitness reasons. The latter has been substituted in all four games, however, averaging just over 67 minutes per start.

Dean Henderson (£4.9m) and new central midfielder Quinten Timber (£5.0m) have also started every match they’ve been available for. The former is currently injured, while the latter joined late in the transfer window.

Slowly but surely, then, we’re beginning to see what Sage’s preferred line-up looks like.

Much of the uncertainty comes at centre-half, with the Palace boss making changes to his back three in all five league games. He’s not been helped by injuries and suspension but the surprise Gameweek 4 omission of Jaydee Canvot (£4.8m), for form reasons, shows it’s not just been enforced alterations.

We’ve got Jean-Philippe Mateta (£6.3m) to return after the break, while Ismaila Sarr (£6.2m) is himself only just back. Jørgen Strand Larsen (£6.0m) and Eddie Nketiah (£5.5m) will be at risk from Mateta, while it’ll be interesting to see which of Kamada and Pino – if any – makes way for Sarr.

SET-PIECE TAKERS

Crystal Palace
CornersPino (6), Wharton (5), Kamada (1)
Crosses from free-kicksPino (3), Wharton (1)
Shots from direct free-kicksPino (2)
Penaltiesn/a

Pino has dominated Palace’s set pieces so far, taking six corners, three crossed free-kicks and both of their direct free-kick attempts.

Wharton has shared some of the responsibility, particularly from corners.

Strand Larsen scored a spot-kick for Palace in Europe but both Sarr and Mateta, the regular takers, were absent.

I like this year sub-7m mids, so looking to attack good short term fixtures for Barnes/King. Schade solid as well. Only conundrum is whether to do Bruno>Saka and upgrade Kostoulas

Defence is too light imo. Money matters, I would get Saka instead of Bruno. Bruno hasn't been taking corners lately and they don't have Casemiro to head them in.

    nearly there

if mbeumo started playing striker and sesko was ruled out for something like up to 2 months, would you look to get him after leeds away if he looked good in United's next 4 matches in all comps? like how highly would you rate a mbeumo st option, all i can really remember is him getting a boatload of chances backend of last season there

Yeah if Sesko is out for a while plus Amad being back, Mbeumo becomes one of the best players in the game imo.

90 min OOP as a striker, with his terrific long-term FPL history, and beastly underlying data. He'd be a monster.

Which one do I sell for Saka?
    A) Palmer
    B) MGW
    C) No Saka

I bought MGW when he was 7.9 (now 8.0). CP away is good fixture for him, but Arsenal after that isn't. Palmer is yellow flagged and J P makes him better asset. I expect Palmer to start but J P has to be a major doubt. Also if that groin is still an issue, he can be frustrating.

Don't sell MGW this week. If Palmer is ruled out then sell if no other possiblity exists from the bench, otherwise roll. Good week to make no transfers.

would keep mgw tbh, minutes so secure and hes just so integral to that forest attack, fixtures decent bar arsenal like you say. forest have looked good on the road this season

palmer vs saka could go either way. like saka if arteta rests him vs lille and slavia praha in upcoming cl matches, after next int break not sure saka will be getting much rest. but thats only 5 GWs, would probably look long term-ish and hold palmer. but if you have FTs to burn and not much else to do maybe could do it idk. saka better not get near that pitch vs czech midweek lol

*also need to know the extent of havertz injury, i imagine gyok will be nicking pens just to boost his numbers if on the pitch. plus i think saka maybe just a better option from open play with havertz, and maybe even white tbh, white just always overlaps and gives saka space inside, seems to have a really good relationship with saka. not that timber isnt good of course as a rb, but yeah

True that. Saka is rising to 9.6 tonight. This injury situation isn't ideal for him either but Palmer is perhaps still bigger worry. Captaincy this week is also a problem. C Saka might still be worth considering. Money burning in my pocket 😉 My team is:

          Verbruggen / 4.0
Calafiori, Konsa*, de Cuyper, Hall, Gvardiol
          Palmer, MGW, Rogers, Groß, Slater
          C Haaland, J P*, Wissa
          1 ft, 2.5 mitb

On the other hand Saka has also been playing more centrally and has now braced for England. I expect him to be better asset than Palmer. If I want Palmer back, I can sell MGW when he has Arsenal and start saving free transfers after that. After playing 90 minutes in last match, I really hope that Tuchel rests him.

With it looking like Scott might be out for 8 weeks, does this make Tavernier a worse pick due to quality of team (Kluivert still out)
or a better pick due to increased expected minutes?

Worse. I don't think Tav's mins are affected.

Scott is Bournemouth's best player and is important to them in all phases of play. It's a blow to both their attack and defence imo.

It's a shame he'll likely miss the AC Milan game. Historic match for the club.

Thanks, that makes sense too, I'd been thinking about bringing him in maybe around GW9 & clutching at straws of less liklihood of an
early sub. Was also planning on Silva next week, need to revisit. Shame about missing out on Bournemouth's European adventure, but
being a self centred FPL manager my primary focus is on my FPL Team.

Ryan Christie will step up. AFCB squad has real depth. David Brooks can also run the park too, Lewis Cook ?
True , with Kroupi and Alex out it hurts the team.
I´m a Cherry boy, and reckon we can step up
on WC now and going Rayan over Tav

tldr- what´s my boyhood 4th division team doing in the prem?

On WC and need to bite the bullet and make a decision on which defender to lose to enable transferring in Saka tonight before price rise. Who goes?
    A) Konsa (bought at 4.5)
    B) Calif (bought at 5.5)
    Thinking Konsa?

Exactly same position. I'm losing Konsa for now, Cal makes another .1 on price rise tonight anyway which mitigates Konsa loss.

Yea keeping Raya as it ensures double arsenal at the back each gw while losing Konsa enables me to go with other big hitting defenders in Tarkowski and Hall. Swapped Konsa for Davis.

I would keep both and sell Raya. He won't save pens every week. He is still the same 6 (2) points merchant. That money could be handy. Verbruggen and rotating 4.5 might be as good.

I don't think there is much between them. Assuming they all play most games, I would expect they all roughly end with a similar amount of points.

I am wondering that also. Decided to check matches they have played and check xGI as the best metric:
      Saka 4.2
      Bruno 3.9
      Palmer 2.1

Palmer hasn´t been all that for a while. Reckon Saka is hitting form- it seems to be recovery from injury timescale.
