After a thrilling end to the previous round of fixtures, we move onto Gameweek 32 of this season’s Scout Picks, where Mark, Jonty, a different member of the community and I pick an XI for the upcoming set of matches. Each week, our line-ups go head-to-head and over the course of the season we’ll be keeping a tally of the points as we go along, with the budget now sitting at 84.0 apiece for our starting line-ups.

The Community – Managed by Pompeyfan

gw32picks I’ve doubled up on Southampton as they’re playing a Hull side who have scored only two goals in their last six away from home. West Brom also have a great fixture and I’m banking on Chelsea regaining some defensive form when they visit QPR. More importantly, Ryan Bertrand, Branislav Ivanovic & Joleon Lescott all have the potential of attacking returns.

Without Costa, Chelsea will be even more reliant on the in-form Eden Hazard. There is, of course, the possibility of Alexis Sanchez being rotated, however, I just feel Arsene Wenger will not want to interrupt his welcome return to form. Saido Mane should be well rested and ready to retake his spot as the focal point of their attack and Raheem Sterling is up against a low in confidence and injury-ravaged Newcastle.

In attack, Harry Kane and Olivier Giroud are in great form, and Loic Remy should deputise for Costa in a match against QPR which should have goals in it. For me, that trio are strong captaincy options this Gameweek as all their opponents have leaky defences; with Villa and QPR conceding 20 in the last 10 and Leicester 16 over the same period.

Jonty

gw32picks

Southampton look the best bet for a clean sheet this week when relegation-threatened Hull visit. I’ve decided to double up on both their attack-minded full-backs to offer potential at both ends of the pitch. Meanwhile, Doosra’s dangerous defenders Members table has prompted me to pick Leighton Baines, who has created the most chances of any defender over the last six matches.

In midfield, Jordan Henderson is my Liverpool pick, after notching up 40 FPL points over the last five Premier League matches. Eden Hazard is another consistent performer. Since the beginning of the year, he has delivered attacking returns in seven of his last 11 matches. Opting for Henderson over his more expensive Liverpool midfielders gives me enough cash to invest in Alexis Sanchez this week. Manchester United’s Juan Mata faces an out-of-sorts Manchester City with the comforting thought that he has scored 20 FPL pts over the last two Premier League matches. Form is on his – and the red half of Manchester’s – side.

In attack, I’ve doubled up on Chelsea and Arsenal assets, with Loic Remy and Olivier Giroud offering strong potential for goals. Completing my picks is Harry Kane, who has a favourable home clash with Aston Villa.

Mark

gw32picks Daniel Sturridge is undoubtedly the shock selection in my Picks line-up but I’m earmarking Monday’s Anfield meeting with Newcastle as the match that finally signals a return to form. He earned a decent run-out in the FA Cup in midweek and I’m backing him and Liverpool to rip into a beleaguered Newcastle. Were it not for the Gameweek 33 blank, I’d definitely be seeking a way to work both Sturridge and Philippe Coutinho into my own line-up.

Elsewhere, I’m gambling on Alexis Sanchez and Sadio Mane to earn starts for Arsenal at Burnley and Southampton at home to Hull, respectively. If they’re on the pitch, I’d expect both to be amongst the points in convincing wins. With that in mind, I’ve no qualms in selecting Olivier Giroud up front. Admittedly, the Clarets have been resolute at home of late but, in my opinion, Arsenal’s firepower and motivation will be too much for them.

At the back, I’ve doubled on the Southampton rearguard. In a week where clean sheets look precious commodities, a St Mary’s meeting with an ailing Hull City side looks a gift. I’m expecting Dejan Lovren and Hector Bellerin to start: they offer the most efficient route into the Arsenal and Liverpool defences.

Harry Kane and Eden Hazard will surely be in everyone’s Picks and line-ups going into the weekend. The pair will no doubt monopolise the armband, with Kane the favoured option. I’m wavering here, though. Unlike a patchy Spurs, Chelsea have clear motivation and I’m expecting QPR to put up some strong resistance to draw the sting from Hazard and his team-mates.

Paul

gw32picks My front three square up to struggling sides that simply cannot afford to stay on the defensive this week. Olivier Giroud and Harry Kane carry form into showdowns with Burnley and Villa, whilst Loic Remy should get the nod against his former club QPR. As mentioned in this afternoon’s Captain Sensible article, Chelsea have created more big chances than any other side over their respective last four matches and I expect Jose Mourinho to unleash Remy at Loftus Road before handing Didier Drogba a start against United next weekend.

At the back, a Southampton double-up is too good to ignore. Ronald Koeman’s side have registered ten of their 14 clean sheets at St Mary’s and face a Hull side with two goals in their last six road trips. Branislav Ivanovic is nailed-on as a potentiall source of points at both ends of the pitch, whilst I pick Per Mertesacker for Arsenal’s trip to Burnley. The Clarets have a single goal in five and are joint worst for aerial attempts conceded this season, suggesting the big German could benefit from dead-ball situations.

Eden Hazard and Alexis Sanchez plundered 13-point hauls last weekend and approach Gameweek 32 in fine form – intriguingly, both have already registered goals and double-figures against their respective weekend opponents. I’m also backing Sadio Mane to return to the Southampton XI for the visit of Hull, whilst Philippe Coutinho’s midweek cup winner against Blackburn persuades me to select the Brazilian for Liverpool’s Anfield encounter with Newcastle on Monday night.

The Scores So Far

During double Gameweeks, only scores from the first ten matches count towards the final score for the Community challenge, so that all community champions have an equal shot at the top Gameweek score of the season prize of a £100 Amazon voucher.

To ensure that our Scout Picks were still focused on the Double, myself, Jonty and Mark stocked up on assets from Aston Villa and QPR while Gameweek 31’s champion Saniul opted to ignore players with two fixtures. Despite this, Saniul picked up the Gameweek 31 wooden spoon with a score of 47, behind my tally of 53, Mark’s 55 and Jonty’s score of 61. In the overall standings Jonty retains the lead with 1628, Mark is in second with 1602, I have 1590 and the community is on 1508.

This is my first season playing FPL. I've saved my WC for GW34 and I can see the advantage of being able to bring in 3 from Chelsea and Liverpool.

However, some people are saying on here that with a WC they are aiming to have 10 players in their XI that are DGW-ers. Correct me if i'm wrong, but surely loading up on players from Hull and Leicester is risky as its likely you'd want to transfer them out after the DGW (and especially as you might have more pressing transfers to make)

Would be interested to hear what people thought about it.

Make sure you have 6 from those 2. Don't worry about the rest, unless they're handy for 35-38.

You could keep the leicester attacking players because they have good fixtures and would be going for broke.

Get the 6 chelsea and Liverpool players and, at most, a couple of others. You are right. You'll screw yourself if you have leicester and hull to shift. If you have the best 6 liverpool and chelsea its no bad thing being left with them. If I was lucky enough to have wc I'd have the 6 plus maximum 2 others. but that's just me. And I'm not that good

it is risky, but again its 2 chances for the price of 1. i think as long as those hul/lei players are benchable fodder you dont have to worry in the later weeks

I think having Hull and Leicester players coming off your bench, especially with injuries / players not starting (e.g. Mane last week) it seems to double your risk.

I thought I was missing out on something. I can understand maybe keeping some of the Leicester attackers, but then again, surely there are better options? It just seems silly to burden yourself with Hull and Leicester players.

I think i'll just stick with the 6 Chelsea and Liverpool players and maybe one other. But most importantly, try and pick players that have the best form and fixtures for the rest of the season. Hopefully I'm right in thinking this

I think you are accurate in your plan. I am also a first year player, and have a WC that will use in GW34, and I cannot figure out the logic of having anymore than a core 6 of Chelsea/Poll DGW players for GW34. Maybe a seventh. Someone might feel aggressive and sell Kun or Kane for Vardy or Ideye, but as you say, that approach may require many hits to reorganize in the following weeks.

      1. GuillermoDickero
        • 11 Years
        10 years, 8 months ago

I'm struggling to see why you would have Ideye?

Yeah the logic behind having loads of DGWers seems to me to be too risky. Especially as you only have the first week post-wildcard

I see it differently. I will have 9.

The Leicester players are cheap enough to be bench players for me after GW34 and Leicester have decent fixtures anyway. The Hull player I will have is also quite cheap. I will hold him till GW36 (Hull v Burnley) and after that he will become a Sunderland player for DGW37 (when I will have 6 DGW players).

In short I see no risk involved really. And lots of upside.

The thing with a wildcard pre-GW34 is that you only have 5 GWs left to navigate in the season. It is possible to have a pretty good idea what transfers you will make afterwards and what your team will be every week till the end of season. An injury could affect your plan but you can always hold a transfer in reserve to help with that.

      1. GuillermoDickero
        • 11 Years
        10 years, 8 months ago

Your final paragraph kind of summed it up for me. But I always see it that it's nice to plan your transfers, but circumstances change. And its not always injuries that you have to contend with. Sometimes players who seem pretty nailed on (e.g. Mane last week) for some reason don't start. Then you're left with a Leicester or Hull player coming on. Obviously not the worst scenario, but surely you would want a better bench?

        1. Ruth_NZ
          • 10 Years
          10 years, 8 months ago

Mané is a bad example because it is very clear why he didn't start last week and 99% sure he will start this week.

I think with 5 GWs to go you can know fairly clearly who is a reliable starter and who isn't. I don't plan on having any maybe players. Only an injury would be likely to affect my plans and that can happen whoever you have.

As for a Leicester or Hull player coming off the bench, I have no problem with that at all. Leicester have very good fixtures and I'm not going to have expensive bench players anyway. The Hull player I will play in 2 of the 3 GWs while I have him. If he has to come on in the other so be it. Doesn't worry me at all.

          1. GuillermoDickero
            • 11 Years
            10 years, 8 months ago

I can understand the Leicester argument as their fixtures are one of the best in the PL.
However, Hull with Palace (A) L'Pool (H) Arsenal (H) does not seem too appealing imo.

I think ultimately it can be argued either way. If loading up on 10 DGW players pays off, it will look like a genius move, if not, then it won't.

Go with your instinct, it got you far thus far. Sheet, I have capt Kane, but now seeing #36 saying he is leaning Hazard has ME thinking of changing. See how it goes? This is really a toss-up.

Go with who you think will score the most points.

If in doubt ask yourself which is likely to be the highest scoring game.

That's how I decided between those two anyway.

Kane. I can see plenty of goals in the Spurs-Villa game. I think QPR-Chelsea will be tighter.

yeah, 5 of last 6 of qpr-chels fixtures have had 1 goal in them

I didn't know that but just have a general impression down the years that they are often tight games. Plus I expect Chelsea to tighten up with Costa out and I can't see QPR going gung-ho and allowing Chelsea to play on the counter. Remy is very quick, it's one of his best assets.

How 'essential' is it to get a Liverpool attacker this week?

Is there any point in bringing one in if i'm going to take him out next week?

depends how many hits you need to field 11 next week and whether you still have your wc for 34

then maybe go for a pool player

Most won't, so it's not essential. Could however be a good differential. I don't like to bring someone in with the plan being to ship him out immediately - does not make much sense when each transfer is so costly.

That was the rationale that stopped me getting Austin last week. 🙁

    Henderson or Coutinho?
Henderson most productive so far, and could be on penalties. Coutinho always more exciting, though...

Balotelli may get some minutes so be wary of Henderson's penalty potential.
