Raheem Sterling and Joe Allen grab a goal apiece as Liverpool recover from back-to-back losses to sweep aside Newcastle at Anfield. The Magpies, meanwhile, turn in another disappointing display and have now tasted defeat in six of the last seven Gameweeks.

Sterling on target in routine Reds win

Raheem Sterling netted his first goal in six outings as Liverpool cruised past a toothless Newcastle side. The Reds starlet shifted the ball across right-back Ryan Taylor on the left flank and guided a curling finish beyond the reach of Tim Krul. Sterling’s return to form arrives at an opportune time for his 30% ownership as the Merseysiders prepare to embark upon their first double Gameweek (wba, hull) after they sit out Gameweek 33. Joe Allen was on hand to cement the three points in the 70th minute, notching his first goal in two seasons.

Jordan Henderson (6.7) picked up the assist for Sterling’s (8.5) opener and has now delivered attacking returns in five of his previous six starts, tallying four goals and two assists in the process. Considering he sits just three points (144) behind Sterling (147) in the midfield standings, boasts superior form and costs 1.8 less, the former Sunderland man is poised for a surge in ownership once the Reds resume league action.

Prior to their Arsenal capitulation, Liverpool were unbeaten in their previous six road matches, with five wins and one draw to their name. Furthermore, both the Tigers (eight) and the Baggies (ten) have shipped plenty of goals in the past three Gameweeks, encouraging Fantasy managers to pursue multiple routes into Liverpool’s squad for Gameweek 34.

Brendan Rodgers named two changes from the XI that triumphed over Blackburn Rovers in the FA Cup, with Emre Can and Jordon Ibe replacing the injured Mamadou Sakho and Daniel Sturridge. Philippe Coutinho was tasked with leading the line, with Sterling lining up on the left wing as the Reds boss continued with the 4-3-3 formation rolled out at Blackburn last midweek.

Rodgers revealed after the Tyneside clash that Sturridge could be fit for the weekend, but Sakho is set to be sidelined for three to four weeks. Sturridge’s fitness is clearly a key talking point as the double approaches, yet unless he features heavily in the their FA Cup semi-final against Aston Villa on Sunday, few managers will fancy investing in the 11.1-priced forward without the security of starts, with the midfield looking the safest option.

Last night’s clean sheet served a reminder of Liverpool’s rearguard as a source of coverage, with eight shut-outs in 12 outings illustrating their newfound resilience. Martin Skrtel’s return for Gameweek 34 either spells the end of Dejan Lovren’s run in the side or allows Rodgers to revert back to the 3-4-3 formation that served him well during their unbeaten streak.

Sissoko sees red as Magpies wilt

Newcastle plummeted to a fifth straight defeat as they struggled to carve out any meaningful chances at Anfield. The Toon have registered just one goal in four Gameweeks since Papiss Cisse picked up a lengthy ban for his involvement in a spitting altercation with Manchester United’s Jonny Evans, with the Senegalese frontman still set to serve three more matches on his suspension (TOT, SWA, lei).

The Magpies’ upcoming schedule offers hope that manager John Carver can arrest their woeful run of losses, however. Four of their remaining six matches are at St James’ Park (TOT, SWA, WBA, WHU), while the remaining two (lei, qpr) are trips to sides currently residing in the bottom three.

Moussa Sissoko was handed a second yellow card for a rash challenge on Lucas Leiva. Having received a red card earlier in the campaign, the France international will serve a two-match ban and sits out home ties against Spurs and Swansea. The fact that Sissoko is the only player to score in any of the last five Gameweeks emphasises Carver’s mounting problems for the run-in.

With lots of little niggles and knocks floating around, they really isn't much in the way of strikers for the double.
Are you going to play "safe" and go with assured starters or hope that guys like Rmey and Sturridge will be fit and go for one of those?

Prob gonna double up in midfield for both teams. Stick with 3 of Kun Giroud Benteke up front. 1 che 1 liv def. 3 Southampton defenders + Ospina.

And make transfers to maximize gw37.

Leaning toward that as well. Both teams rely heavily on mids anyway. If sturridge or costa or Remy don't look like they will be fit.... I think this strategy is valid.

Aguero or Bolasie for this gwk only? Or both for -4?
They will replace Pieters and Boyd/Gomis in the 11

Before Bolasie's hat-trick he'd only scored once in the prem. For this GW only, I'd say Aguero is the safer bet.

Hi folks. Appreciate some advice. 2 FTs and WCing gw34. So any transfer is fair game.

    Pants Myhill
    Ivan Clyne Dawson PVA* naughton*
    Sanchez* Hazard eriksen manè Ameobi
    Kun Kane Benteke*

    A) Naughton + Benteke > Baines/Coleman + Murray (play 4-3-3)
    B) Sanchez Benteke > Bolasie + Murray (3-4-3 CP play)
    C) Sanchez Benteke > Silva + Murray and start blocking ML rivals

Hey Jaff! Yea seems like the palace wagon is at full steam ahead. Now considering whether to hold on to Benteke though. Thinking of going with FWDs of Kun/Kane + giroud + Benteke, and load up on a couple of mids each from Chelsea and liv as well as 1 def each. Can definitely afford. Thoughts?

I'd rather have Giroud instead of Benteke after the double. Loading up on Liv and Che mids should be worth it imo. Who are you thinking of getting?

Sterling Henderson all the way - even before last night. Don't rate coutinho as an FPL prospect. Hazard and Fab along with them. Set pieces will be big for Chelsea that gw I have a feeling.

I have a problem like that...

    Hi All,

Considering the lack of games next week, I can field the below team. (luckily 11 players).

    Keep: Davis K.
Def: Rose - Bertrand - Terry
Mid: Mane - Eriksen - Walters - Hazard - Silva
    Att: Remy - Kane

Bench: Mignolet - Sturridge - Belerin - Monreal

    0 FT's & 3.6 million ITB.

Any advice/comments on the below are very much appreciated:

    A. Would you take a hit to change any of the team fielded? Remy and Sturridge didnt play for me this week! 🙁

    B. Next FT I want to bring in one more Liverpool player (in midfield) so I can field 6 DGW'ers. Who should I bring in? Couthino, Henderson or Sterling?

    C. Any long term adivce given the run in of games? (Arsenal DGW for example)

Thanks for reading and aprreciate any feedback!

    1. Business Dog
      • 11 Years
      10 years, 10 months ago

A - No hit required this week, as you can field a fairly decent 11. You might well want to take one ready for the double 34 though.

B - Sterling. Or Henderson if you will use the ££ elsewhere.

C - Plan every transfer thoroughly. With a solid view to setting yourself up for the DGWs, and to maximise points potential. Its the DGWs that will see the biggest shift in the rankings. Captain choice in the DGWs crucial also.

This hot topic is useful for determining point B - which Liverpool mid to choose.

i'm not on wc and will have 5 for -4 or 6 for -8

      so yes, 7 is fine

you'd probably want to shift one of the liverpool players back during gw35 anyway so that's a transfer tied up, and you don't want to load on leicester, do you?

    Hazard - Silva - Eriksen
    Aguero (C) - Remy - Kane

Is it better to use your wildcard to set up for the gameweek or to rebalance after the gameweek?

Bearing mind you can carry two transfers before but automatically lose any you have carried once you use your WC.

      Hi Lads,
For those of us without a WC I think that the next few weeks are the most challenging and the most interesting of the season. How do we navigate blanks for Liverpool, Arsenal, etc whilst still preparing for the DGW *but* not ruining our teams for the remainder of the season (which includes an Arsenal double!)?

      Cheers.

I've no WC. Can get 11 out this week. Have no Liverpool coverage so I've taken a hit this week to get 1 Pool player in. Will take another hit next week for 2 more.

Don't like -8 in one week. Makes H2H games difficult. Prefer to spread over 2 weeks.

You give yourself a bigger disadvantage in a H2H league as you start off both weeks with a -4 instead of one week with a -8 (where you're likely to be up against someone who has also taken a hit).

Last season was an anomaly for Mark - he had a good record before then.

He played a disastrous early wildcard and then took too many punts instead of fixing the weaknesses in his squad first.

It took a lot of persuasion by Granville before he started doing what was required to finish up with a half-decent rank.

This is a question on many lips I'm sure. I've got 2 FT's and am going to WC for GW34 so:

Who do you think the best punts are when looking at this week only?

In a follow up to a number of recent hot topics (RuthNZ, Jonty), are any of you seriously considering jettisoning Kane in the next few weeks?

Particularly potent question for Granville, with the greater freedom afforded by the WC, and the "nothing to lose" relative OR.

Is it better to play an early wildcard, or to save it for a DGW such as the GW34?

Would taking a few early hits be a good alternative?

How many points should a wildcard be worth, including points gained in the weeks preceding and following the week in which it is played?

Is it worth playing an early wildcard just to increase team value, or is team value overrated?

If Chelsea win this weekend vs United then beat Arsenal and Leicester in the DGW, they could potentially win the league in GW35. In that case, would having 3 Chelsea be a disadvantage? Will our heavy hitters be nailed?

He's in a very strong position, and is the only player in the current top 8 who still has one to play - but don't give up hope, strange things can still happen.

      What's in a name?

Saturday was a great day for the Murray clan. If I had realised that it was Andy's wedding day then I might have been tempted to consider it as a good omen for bringing in Glenn of that ilk last week.

Have the team's FPL transfers ever been influenced by strange non-footballing reasons?

    Krul
    Bertrand, Clyne, Ivanovic
    Hazard, Silva, Boyd, Siggurdson,
    Kun, Remy, Kane

    Panti | Mane, Bellerin, PvA

    1FT, 5.0 ITB

    A) Save

    B) Mane -> Bolasie and play him over Boyd. This would mean a -4 next week to bring in Hendo and Mignolet.

I am starting to rethink Leicester players, for the good. I have just noticed that 4 of their next 5 games are at home. With sun-QPR to finish.
