Whether statistical acumen or football knowledge is the better indicator of success in Fantasy Football has been the source of considerable debate in recent years. In light of that, I thought I’d share my story as a fan of statistics who has absolutely no clue about football.

I have never seen a football match before in my life and until playing the Fantasy Premier League (FPL) game I had zero football knowledge and even thought that Christiano Ronaldo and Ronaldinho were the same person. I had never heard of Sergio Aguero or Eden Hazard. Wayne Rooney was the only Premier League player I had heard of but I still couldn’t have told you a thing about the type of player he is. As an Australian this doesn’t even exclude me from many conversations as none of my friendship circle are interested in football. Last year though I decided to take part in an experiment and play a Fantasy sport I know nothing about and see how well I could go.

The results have been much better than I expected as I go into Gameweek 34 with an overall rank of 1,261. Here is a link to my team to see how I have progressed in my debut season.

But how did I get to this point? The answer is simple. It is because of the Fantasy Football Scout community. You are my football knowledge.

For the start of the season, I decided I would just read every article that was posted on Fantasy Football Scout and try and read all of the comments. I ended up with a half decent squad (or so I thought) which realistically was just a mash up of the most common players suggested on here. You could basically call it the FFS community team.

My Gameweek 1 side looked like this:

Begovic  (Elliot)

Cahill – Ferdinand – Jones (Chester, Wisdom)

Hazard – Henderson – Ramsey – Mata (Marney)

Costa – Rooney – Diouf

Let me explain something, I panicked like a lot of people about the fitness of Swansea’s Gylfi Sigurdsson right before Gameweek 1 was starting and transferred him to Burnley’s Dean Marney. As you can see, it wasn’t a pretty start. I even benched Hull’s James Chester for his 15-point Gameweek 1 haul (and played him for the -2 the next week). But at the end of Gameweek 1, I was left with something I could work with — stats!

I just looked at players’ stats to decide who to bring in each week. Still did not watch games, but purely used stats. Finally my team started to improve in ranking slightly, and then more significantly until I rocketed into the top 100k then top 20k. I then stagnated.

After about two months, I was now able to actually understand who people were talking about in their discussions on FFScout. It was very hard at first having to learn all the team names (I’m still not great at nicknames), then player names, then formation and then roles. My football knowledge was coming purely from FFScout, its community and statistics. I had not read anything else from any other websites (and till haven’t). And guess what? My ranking started to improve again.

It became very very clear to me that there is an answer to the question of what contributes more to a higher overall rank, statistics or football knowledge. I could give you the boring answer of “both” but it is more specific than that. Stats can get you a top 20-30k finish. Minimal to no knowledge needed. I know that because that is what would have happened if I still didn’t understand what you were all talking about and discussing. From Gameweek 8 to Gameweek 20, I moved 900 spots and had eight red arrows and five green ones. When I started understanding the discussions that were taking place about certain players on FFScout, which is roughly from Gameweek 21 to Gameweek 33, I had had two red arrows and 11 green.

Stats can only get you so far (let’s say top 1%), but knowledge helps you push out into that top 0.1% region. I do believe though, if you had one person fully using stats and one only using their knowledge, then stats would lead to a higher overall rank.

I know this will seem obvious to a lot of you, but I think my situation is the closest sort of “evidence” that you will ever get. Good luck for the rest of the season and thanks for reading.

Amazing tale. Thanks for sharing. You are doing better than me by about 500 places and I've been doing this for seven years and watch a fair few matches. Incredible achievement. You should consider getting Membership next season - the stats there will more than satisfy your number cravings. 🙂

There are many examples of mathmatics based people doing far better in their first season before actually understanding anything about football

      > "if you had one person fully using stats and one only using their knowledge, then stats would lead to a higher overall rank"

I'd have to agree with OP here.

I'm a Canadian, & as a result, I get little to no access to the wall to wall football coverage that's in the UK.

Further, some of the games start at 7:45am on Sunday morn, & outside of watching a half a game here or there, I get very little *soccer* in my day.

Now, the first two seasons I played FPL I wasn't a member, & couldn't even crack the Top 50k. (Gee, I wonder why?)

Well, I two seasons ago I decided to buy a membership here at the FFS.
It instantly resulted in a Top 10k finish, & now this year fingers crossed, I'll be able to crack the Top 1k.

Mind you, I consume the same amount of football as I did before. (Just have a game on in the background Saturday morn here & there.)
The only difference now, is the mountain of stats I have available to me.

SiB, Touches in the Final 3rd, Chances created, Position maps, Season ticker, Paul's Big Numbers articles etc...

All this means, I don't have to watch a single game if I don't want to because, the FFS has already broken each game down for me..

In the end OP's actually right, you can easily be a *casual* watcher but, still have a great finish so long as you're armed with the important numbers.

Are you finding yourself getting interested in the sport or is it purely experimental?

Thanks! Honestly after the first few weeks I didn't think I was going to last all season. I actually missed 3 GWs in a row and didn't change my team (which I regret now!)

It's a weird situation to be in, I quite enjoy watching my players now (granted I can't very often as games are at 2.30am and 5.30am here) but I couldn't watch a game without any of my players in it still.

I can see how having a community like this helps. I tried playing Championship Fantasy Football earlier this year but gave up after a couple of weeks, there's no community for it and I had no idea who half the players were especially going into League 2.

Congrats on the high rank, just shows how great this community is. I have definitely benefited since I found the site in Jan 2014. You should try watching some matches though, maybe you'll get hooked. I could give up FPL much more easily than I could ever give up watching; it adds to my enjoyment except (as an Arsenal supporter) when I don't own Kane and he scores and scores and scores.......

Funnily enough I'm doing the same thing with Aussie rules. I'd entered a Fantasy cricket tournament which was being covered by Sky, subsequently received a reminder that the AFL was about to begin so thought I'd give it a go
It seems you have more knowledge of the EPL, than I have of AFL. Not heard of any of the players or how many made up a team.
    It's GW4 this week and I'm currently lying 8k.

    Come on the Bulldogs!

8k is a great ranking! What competition is it for? You may not even know that you're playing a more "elite" competition if its for the website I'm thinking. Loving the terminology differences, "round 4" 🙂 I had to get used to saying gameweek on here too haha.

      PS Go Collingwood!

Amazing read. I guess next season I will ask my wife to manager a team and see can do better...:) I think another reason is that (I believe) you are not emotionally attached to any team or player so you can make unbiased decisions, also little to none knee jerk as you don't react to the result but the stats..

I wonder what would be your transfers this week as our teams are very similar...?

    1. Gussy
      • 10 Years
      10 years, 7 months ago

Having no emotional attachment at all to the players is a fantastic point you've made. I think it has really helped me this season as I wasn't afraid of bring in Silva early and dropping Rooney very early for example. (Also I dropped and had to pick up Hazard - oops!)

Transfers this week were Silva to Sterling and Siggy to Coutinho. Didn't get Henderson because...stats. I see from comments that Coutinho has apparently a very weak shot so it is misleading, but I'm just going to back what has got me into this spot in the first place! 🙂

      Good luck!

Great story. I started fpl 4 years ago with absolutely zero interest in the premiership. Knew of the clubs Arsenal, Manchester United and Liverpool but that was it. Switched jobs and country, and the guys I hanged with were fpl fanatics so naturally I ended up joining in the "fun". The league I play in is for serious money (even though the participants aren't "worldclass") so a lot of information to assist my learning curve was not forthcoming.

Long story short, found this site doing my own research and it is safe to say that everything I've come to know about English football has been through FFS. I am virtually all stats reliant since I hardly get to see games, so membership is a must for me (coupled with some time reading the boards here).

4th year in for me, and I'm firmly in the camp that stats analysis in itself is a viable strategy. My ranks may have been better had I been more knowledgeable (through actually watching games), but they aren't to shabby.

Press on Gussy, definitely rooting for ya.

"I do believe though, if you had one person fully using stats and one only using their knowledge, then stats would lead to a higher overall rank."

I would say stats is knowledge. Stats tell you which players are playing closer to goal, taking more shots, making more crosses and creating more chances i.e. which players are performing better. Having good football knowledge is knowing precisely these things so this isn't really a comparison because they go hand in hand.

    1. Gussy
      • 10 Years
      10 years, 7 months ago

True. But there are things like knowing that Coutinho has very weak shots, so his stats are misleading since they may be on target but they have no chance of going in. I don't know any of this stuff except from what I read on here. They do still go hand in hand though 🙂

On this context, I would also like to add my story.

A freshman myself to FPL this year. Though I do knew a few things about football, like player names, stadiums etc, but that was about it. Though watch a few match nowadays, but mostly don;t know what to look to other than the ball and the player on it..

First 13 weeks, I've been 1 million-ish. Didn't even know sites like this one exists. But it was someday around that time when 'fantasy.premierleague.com' was not opening directly from my browser, so I Googled for it whether it is down or something ? Then I found this site, the columns from Independent and a few other sites. Found this one the most useful, started following it.

OR started to improve afterwards, mainly by following the articles and discussions on comments area, people talking about Shots in Box, Successful Passes in Final Third and why Sanchez is worth investing the 11m. Achieved my personal best OR of 23K (Though not much I think to most here 🙂 ) on GW26. The previous week earned a GW rank of 129.

Most of this from what the articles said and what people here thought. Not a premium member myself, so didn't had the aid of those even enhanced stats to help me out. Considering it for next year already. Also made some good friends. 🙂

This is the link to my account btw :

That's ok, we're different people. Basically the game isn't so easy to access in Australia. I get to see one game on Saturday night at about 10.30pm and then all the rest are at 2.30am or 5.30am. So I don't even get a chance to watch. Maybe it would be different if they were all on when I could watch each week? Who knows? 🙂

There have been some high profile examples of managers who don't get to see (m)any games live (notably the world number one!) but to have no knowledge of football at all takes it to a whole new level. Kudos.

Being good at this game has literally zero to do with watching football (or more accurately it doesn't have to). If Im honest I haven't watched an entire premier league game for years! (have previously been wary of stating that, but i dont really care!). Haven't even watched a complete MOTD either for a long time. It makes little to no difference.

To get good results at this you need to be able to process information and make decisions based on that information. For sure its not the only way, but ive done it for years, hell I don't even really like football that much! 😀 (blasphemous i know!)

So why do I play fantasy football? Because its a challenge i enjoy; the assessing of information and deciding the best course of action is something that I naturally gravitate to. Sad i know but hey, im happy so who cares!

Glad to see Im not completely along - you don't even need FFS either tbh. 🙂

So many similar stories to mine here.

Don't / can't watch a heap of games being in Canada but, ever since I bought a membership I've jumped from not being able to crack the Top 50k to making a run at the Top 1k.

I also think it helps being outside the UK & its football mad media.

With less noise, I think it helps focus more on the important aspects of the fantasy game.

ie. I didn't hear that Giroud shagged a hooker last year until the commentators eluded to it.
All I cared about was his recent Shots in the Box & his average position over the past few weeks.

A classic case of the wisdom of the crowd (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Wisdom_of_the_crowd)

"An explanation for this phenomenon is that there is idiosyncratic noise associated with each individual judgment, and taking the average over a large number of responses will go some way toward canceling the effect of this noise."

I certainly think that not being a fan of any Premier League club helps as there are no conflicted loyalty. As a fan of Championship side I only ever watch the Premier League for fantasy football reasons. I have very little interest in whether so and so is relegated or gets into Europe apart from fantasy football reasons.

I play pretty much every Aussie Rules fantasy game and have done so for about 10 years. Always top 1% but really struggle breaking into the top top echelon which I think is just due to my natural bias because I'm so invested in it.
