Our pre-Gameweek members article, which focuses on the main captaincy contenders, arrives once again this afternoon. As always, we take a three-part approach which includes the weekly poll standings, the Opta statistics and our Rate My Team projections to help steer your thoughts on the armband conundrum.

The Captain Poll

There’s no surprise to see Eden Hazard as the runaway leader of this week’s poll. The Chelsea winger – who has earned a minimum six points in all but one of his last seven – has moved away from the chasing pack at the top of the Fantasy Premier League (FPL) standings and is backed by over 59% as the Blues face up to Arsenal and Leicester.

Raheem Sterling (15%), Jordan Henderson and Philippe Coutinho (both 3%) find a place in our top five as Liverpool prepare for trips to West Brom and Hull. Sterling has a goal and assist in the last two Gameweeks, whilst Coutinho has netted in two of the last three in all competitions, though Henderson is clearly the form player – providing a goal or assist in five of the last six league outings. Their opponents’ recent defensive form bodes well for the Merseysiders – West Brom had shipped ten goals in three prior to their 2-0 win at Palace, whilst Hull have conceded eight times in their last three, suggesting the latter two, in particular, look real armband differentials in light of their lack of votes.

Sergio Aguero is the highest ranked single Gameweek player. Having notched three times since a shift to 4-4-1-1, the Argentine (3% backing) is in fine form ahead of the visit of a Villa side with two shut-outs in eight under new boss Tim Sherwood. Harry Kane has also collected 3% of votes as Spurs travel to Southampton but with their hosts earning 11 clean sheets at St Mary’s already, the youngster faces a tough task to justify any armband investment this time out.

Two goals and a pair of assists earn Jamie Vardy 2% backing as Leicester prepare to face Burnley and Chelsea. Whilst their trip to Turf Moor holds more optimism, the Foxes have racked up ten goals in their last four and Vardy looks a key figure in their attack as Nigel Pearson prepares to take the match to the league leaders.

Further down, Branislav Ivanovic and Cesc Fabregas hover around the 1% mark. The Serbian’s propensity for returns at both ends of the pitch has seen him deliver at least five points in seven of his last nine appearances, whilst a goal and two assists in the last four has helped Fabregas return to form after a barren winter spell. With four double-figure hauls apiece this season, the duo have shown they are more than capable of explosive returns.

So, I activated my WC last weekend, havent touched it since.

Now I'm quite curious to know if this is still a strong team:

    Mignolet

    Terry - Schlupp - Skrtel - Ivanovic

    Sterling - Cambiasso - Hazard (C)

    Kane - Vardy - Agüero

Pantilimon - Sánchez - van Aanholt - Cork

    Is it?

Rated 8349 globally. My team for DGW with WC:

    Schmeichel
    Ivan - Skrtel - Terry
    Sterling (C) - Cambiasso - Henderson - Hazard
    Vardy - Kane - Aguero

    K Davies - Ozil - PVA - Duff (3.9 cheap filler)

Thinking Kane or Vardy to Giroud next week.

    Any thoughts??

I guess if you're on your wildcard, there's no need to take any risks with players like Vardy or Sterling.

The rumours may come to nothing but with unlimited free transfers, why take that risk? .

There is a good chance a player like sterling (highly owned up there) would start and do well (likely)

having a player who does well is more useful than avoiding one who doesnt

You can afford a fail but missing out on big hauls is costly

          1. Irish Madridista ⭐
            • 15 Years
            10 years, 9 months ago

But fails amount to missing out on big hauls, that's why they're fails?

If Hazard gets 2 points and everyone else in midfield that week gets 2 points, its not a fail.
If Hazard gets 2 points, but some others got 20 points, then hazard was taking up a space in your team that could have had those 20 points, so he was a fail for that week?

            1. The Machine

Thisnwoukd be true in most weeks but there is a severe lack of good dgwers this week. Im pretty sure most already have the highest owned dgwers so a sterling fail does no real damage

Going without him could very well do

      Vardy, agree. He's already gone.

Sterling, however, is a tough call, I've no idea what was said, he was one of my most important players this week, and it means I can do Schlupp instead of Duff too..

What do people think about my WC team? Limit funds means I've had to cut back on some of the luxury options, so having Azpilicueta over Terry etc. and I now have 0.2 in the bank.

    Courtois
    Azpilicueta Skrtl Morgan
    Ramsey Henderson Hazard Sterling Albrighton
    Aguero Benteke

    Gilks - Giroud Duff Bruce

For GW36, I'd be doing Courtois > Ospina and transfer Sterling out, which would give me 9.7 to spend, and I'd probably bring in Silva.

Im fairly happy with this team, as it's got most of the players in who I really want. And sitting at 69k, I want to take a few risks to try and get me up there.

On a -4 already and still have Remy to worry about.

    Mignolet (Davis)
    Schlupp / Terry / Moreno
    Hazard (V) / Henderson (C) / Silva / Sanchez
    REMY / Aguero / Kane

    Bench: Clyne, Boyd, Bellerin

Worth another hit to get Remy out? Or just leave as Clyne first sub and hope for the best?

it was HuttonDressedAsLamb who posted that they were speaking with Vardy's wife and she said he had picked up an injury and it was "touch and go". Then someone else spotted he was absent from the training pictures.. and then it was noted that HuttonDressedAsLamb has spoken about this Vardy connection before almost a year ago.. meaning they were likely telling us this in good faith.

I'm still hoping maybe the source was joking with HDAL.. or that it's only a small knock and will resolve itself. Not enough context, but enough to do anything knee jerk just yet.. I don't think.

Hopefully we will hear more before transfer deadline!

      Not sure he is injured..

Currently taking some comfort from the fact that I have Giroud as first sub.. I could also do a last minute switch to Austin but I'd have to see how that'd affect my transfer plans going forward.

It wouldn't be the end of the world if he was injured, really. The worst thing would be for him to be fit and do nothing to justify me picking him in the first.

    How does this sound?

    Dawson to Skrtel
    Eriksen to Sterling
    Remy to Vardy

    (-8)

    Good or bad?

Assuming one of Vardy/Sterling do miss out, who's a better first sub, Bruce (cry, LIV) or Boyd (LEI)
