Tributes have been paid across the Fantasy Football community to Simon Humber, who has passed away. Simon, who was a regular poster on Fantasy Football Scout under the name Absinthe, lost his long battle with ocular melanoma this week.

When the news was posted last night the volume of tributes and strength of feeling showed what a popular member of Fantasy Football Scout he was.

Mark was among those to leave a personal tribute saying: “He was someone I met in person in a previous job, years before FFScout started, and we became friends on Facebook as soon as he turned up on our pages. I was very proud to have him contribute to the community.

“In my limited time meeting Simon and from his posts on our site, he was clearly a very smart and funny guy and we’re all going to miss him in our little part of the world.”

Community poster Smarty Pants was another to post as he recalled Simon’s first announcement of the severity of his illness two years ago. He said: “Almost two years ago, reading through pre-season transfer talk, I was shocked by a message from him announcing that he’d just lost one eye due to cancer.

“But he mentioned that his second eye was not in danger and has always been making an impression of a positive person since then, so I thought that that was it. And now it turns out that there was way more behind that… that’s a tragedy… rest in peace, Absinthe.”

Earlier last month Simon posted to tell the community that “sadly it looks as if my time is coming to an end.”

Another of our community Gnu described this heartbreaking post as “one of the saddest things and perhaps most humbling” he had read adding that Simon “still retained that sense of humour in what must have been a dark & difficult time.”

This strong sense of bravery and good humour carried through to his penultimate post last month asking the community to “help a potentially dying man” with his latest transfer decisions. He even managed to make transfers as recently as last week.

Over his four years commenting on Fantasy Football Scout he made more than 2,000 posts and many were regularly flagged up as key posts, offering advice on a range of issues. When we launched our community articles he was amongst the first to leap at the chance to offer advice to a wider audience, with his look at the defences among promoted sides prior to the 2014/15 season just one of a number of his popular articles.

It wasn’t just amongst our community that he will be sorely missed. On Triggerlips Transferhub blog further tributes were paid this week.

But most heartbreaking of all is that his son no longer has a father and his close friends and family no longer have a much loved man in their lives.

His final post on Fantasy Football Scout earlier simply read “cheers all.” On behalf of everyone at Fantasy Football Scout, cheers to you Simon for being such a vital part of our community and friend to many.

Me too. He was just 44, just a year older than me, with a young child. Really hammers home the fragility of life.

No age at all. I'd consider losing my father a tragedy and he's a damn sight older than Simon was, this must be heartbreaking for his family.

44 is no age. We really can go at any time, I hope his son can find strength through any means possible.

I didn't know Simon other than through a couple of exchanges on here, but it was testament to his spirit, humour and courage that just 2 weeks ago he was posting on here, fully aware of the impending end and making light of it. I suppose all we could ever want in those final moments is for our personality and perspective to remain, and Simon's illness evidently only deprived him physically. It is heartbreaking that, as he put it, "the bitch" fixed her eyes on him as she sang. It was humbling to see someone rage against the dying of the light with such grace and dignity.

My thoughts are with his family and friends.

Perhaps we could start a different/second Hall of Fame, based upon contribution to FFS and our affection for them, so their name is always held in lights on this site.

Sounds a bit daft, but it's what they do in WWE and it's always such a nice occasion when people get recognised for their outstanding contribution to it.

You will live on through your son, to whom I am sure you have imparted plenty of the amazing spirit that was much in evidence in your posts on FFS.

No doubt he will do you proud.

I don't know if this is possible, but maybe we could have a donation to a charity of his families choosing on behalf of the FFS community, with the community making donations?

Someone was mentioning to me earlier maybe doing an entry fee for the planned PS4 FIFA tournament I was looking to run with all proceeds going to a cancer charity.

Not sure if that's something that could be done.

    Well...

As I posted earlier, everything the community has written about him printed out and put into a nice memory box for his family would be nice.

Beyond that, a community fund to provide some babysitting funds for his son would probably help both his wife and son in a few weeks time when other friends and family nearby have to get back to their regular everyday life, and there will still be little regular for his wife and son.

    Just some ideas.

My best wishes for traversing this difficult time - and to finding good places to store the joy of his memory - to all of Simon's family and friends.

This has been a season that has shown the very best of this community. It can be harsh and spiky sometimes, but at its roots it is a supportive community that values and respects its members. This article is just one example, and this season has been filled with others. I only knew Simon as someone I exchanged a few posts with, but that is enough. I feel his loss, as most of us do, just because he is one of our own. I hope his family knows how much he was valued by this small segment of his life. RIP Simon.

This is just heartbreaking news. He was a terrific poster on here, not just for the intelligence of his insights but more importantly for the calm and humble way he made his contributions.

    We've lost a real gentleman.

I've always thought its a mistake to distinguish between "real life" and the internet because as this shows it is just a means for us to genuinely, humanly reach each other.

It was only until yesterday that I felt absolutely hopeless after a horrendous DGW. I thought of giving up and this morning I read this post. I never knew this man but upon reading his desire to have a strong finish, planning transfers till the end of the season tells me such a dedicated person he was! I will try to finish as high as possible this season in a way to pay my respects to this wonderful human being! Cheers Simon!

If I remember right, he used to work in EA and was part of the FIFA development team. He always had some fantastic tips for up and coming players to buy on career mode. Some of his best moments also came when he was active team member of Japan in one of the FFS UEFA team competitions. One with fantastic sense of humor and witty responses.

Man, I've been thinking of something to say ever since I saw this news yesterday. Terrible news!

    RIP Simon.

Thank you for the Ricardo Zivkovic tip - the man is a absolute beast.

I won't keep banging on about it without speaking to Jonty first but someone mentioned making the FIFA tournament a paid entry with proceeds going to cancer charity.

That idea has just become more fitting. I'll email Jonty now.
