Our Monday lunchtime look at the weekend’s matches arrives once again. Sadio Mane’s eye for goal, Palace’s midfield quandary, Robert Huth’s impact on the Leicester defence and Villa’s lack of defensive solifity under Tim Sherwood’s are amongst today’s topics.

The Saints are lethal on their day…
After an indifferent run of form, Ronald Koeman’s side signed off at St Mary’s in style with a 6-1 hammering of Villa. Having thrashed Sunderland 8-0 earlier in the season, the Saints have shown they are capable of racking up the Fantasy returns, though having scored just six times in their previous six, it’s also clear that they need to find more consistency under the Dutchman’s guidance. Despite the fact that Graziano Pelle embarked on a 14-match goalless spree between Gameweek 18-31, Southampton still sit sixth for goals scored this season; with four strikes in his final three at St Mary’s, the Italian late rally suggests he’s belatedly starting to find his feet in the English top-flight.

Mane will be on next season’s radar…
The Southampton wide man served up a statement of intent with a stunning 23-point haul at home to Villa. Mane took his tally to 11 strikes this term – that’s just one less than Graziano Pelle despite playing over 1,000 minutes less than the Italian – and with his first full season now behind him, we’ll be expecting big things from the Senegal international when 2015/16 gets underway in early August. Indeed, given his goal-getting abilities, will Koeman be tempted to field Mane up top on occasion in the new campaign?

Puncheon vs Bolasie continues to pose a problem…
Alan Pardew’s arrival has left us with a real conundrum in the Palace midfield next season. Puncheon grabbed the Eagles’ opener and Bolasie chipped in with a pair of assists in the 3-1 win at Anfield and whilst the former’s set-piece duties heighten his appeal, Bolasie’s role up front alongside Marouane Chamakh wasn’t the first time that Pardew has utilised the DR Congo international as a striker. Puncheon has now scored in five separate matches under Pardew whereas Bolasie, somewhat surprisingly, has netted in just one of his 13 appearances since Neil Warnock departed – a three-goal haul and assist against Sunderland, helping him to a 24-point return, suggest Bolasie’s explosive potential may give him the edge over his team-mate.

Huth’s acquisition has boosted the Foxes defence …
A goalless draw at Sunderland helped Leicester to a fifth clean sheet in the last six outings, with only champions Chelsea breaching Nigel Pearson’s defence. Leicester’s stunning end of season turnaround has helped clinch survival thanks to a series of resilient displays that has coincided with Robert Huth’s arrival on loan – with the big German in their XI, the Foxes managed six clean sheets in 13 league matches, compared to four shut-outs in 25 prior to his acquisition. Persuading Huth to sign on permanently at the King Power should be a priority for Pearson as he looks to build on his side’s great escape.

Villa can always capitulate under Sherwood …
Given that their quest for survival was very much on the line, Villa’s extraordinary St Mary’s loss highlights that there’s plenty of work still to be done. Results elsewhere on Saturday ensured that Tim Sherwood’s side are safe for another year but the 6-1 loss was the fourth time in the last seven Gameweeks that Villa have conceded at least three goals. The new manager’s arrival may have boosted their attack but Sherwood’s approach will afford plenty of opponents the opportunity to thrive in the final third.

Phillips and not Austin, could be the QPR asset to track…
Charlie Austin may only have an assist to his name over the last five matches but with 17 goals and eight assists in his debut Premier League campaign, the suitors will still be circling over the close-season. Whilst Austin’s season has tailed off, Matty Phillips has turned in a series of displays to suggest he, too, will find his way onto summer shopping lists. A goal and assist in the 2-1 win over Newcastle took the winger’s tally to three goals and eight assists in 14 matches under Ramsey – essentially, he has played a part in 11 of QPR’s 17 goals since being installed in the first XI in Gameweek 24. Given that no other midfielder has managed more assists this calendar year than Phillips, his possible return to the Premier League could bring him back onto our radars.

Butland looks a safe pair of hands…
A goalless draw against Burnley took the Stoke stopper’s tally to two clean sheets in three appearances since stepping in for Asmir Begovic. Despite recovering from minor surgery, the Bosnian only made the bench as Mark Hughes kept faith in Butland for the Turf Moor trip and the Potters boss took time out to praise the youngster’s performance post-match. With his contract set to expire in 12 months’ time, reports are building that Begovic could be set for a move away from the Britannia over the summer – such a scenario could immediately bring Butland onto our radars for the upcoming campaign.

Kane needs a rest…
As his debut season comes to a halt, the Tottenham frontman has faltered badly as a Fantasy prospect. Kane’s blank at home to Hull means he’s managed just one goal and a single assist in his previous seven appearances as the heavy schedule takes its toll – he’s now played 50 matches for Mauricio Pochettino’s side in all competitions this term. With an Under 21 European Championship tournament also to contend with over the summer, the risk of burn-out already looks likely and may persuade Pochettino to ease Kane into the new season.

Bacuna’s classification needs monitoring …
The Dutchman earned his fifth assist in nine outings at right-back under Sherwood after supplying the ball for Christian Benteke’s consolation at St Mary’s. Frustratingly listed as a midfielder across the Fantasy games, Bacuna has been utilised as a full-back or wing-back by Paul Lambert and successor Sherwood this season and could be set for a change in classification for next term. Given his impact going forward under Sherwood, he’s another to keep an eye on.

Silva is in a punishing frame of mind …
Subject to heavy sales ahead of Chelsea’s double Gameweek 34, the City midfielder has since delivered 33 points in the following three rounds of fixtures, courtesy of a goal and five assists. Silva has now chalked up his FPL highest haul since arriving on these shores and with a home clash against Southampton up next, nobody would back against him continuing that run on the final day. Having stepped up his scoring form this season, Silva has served up double-figures for goals and assists for the first time at City – his displays will pose a real dilemma for next term, with Eden Hazard and Alexis Sanchez already looking nailed-on for many in the midfield area.

Ashley Young has played his way onto our pre-season Watchlist..
Having seen off the challenge of Angel di Maria for a starting berth, the United winger has chalked up two goals and five assists in the last ten Gameweeks with a series of impressive displays. Whilst new boy Memphis Depay looks set to threaten Young’s pitch time on the left, Louis van Gaal has shown he won’t be swayed by big-money buys when it comes to team selection and the former Villa man could still be in the picture when the new campaign gets underway in early August.

S Kuqi had Mane so Saturday and Sunday were a bit nervy. With minilam involvement from his other players he now needs Terry getting 23 points to win

    BLOCKING/COVERING RIVAL ASSETS & PLAYING "D" in GW37-38

    Hi all,

Personally I have not had the good fortune to be in the position to do so in previous years. However this year I sit some 20-25 ahead with similar Arsenal/Chelsea coverage left to go this week, and am hopeful of going into the final week with at least a 20 point lead intact. I'm now toying with the idea of coverage as I'm 3k-ish and won't be breaking 1k most likely, however it could end up backfiring spectacularly!

I understand a number of factors will contribute such as what players you share with your rivals, what the likelihood of them making wholesale changes is, and how much rotation is likely, etc... With individual -4's considered; what kind of points lead would people think is a reasonable cushion to take maybe 4/8/12 in hits to cover, and at what point does this become too break-even/risky a strategy? The above assumes that you share 6/7 players with your rival already, you will both (c) the same player for GW38, and they may even absorb a hit of their own to gain a differential/punt.

What would be your magic number of a lead in points before adopting this strategy, and why?

      • 16 Years
      10 years, 6 months ago

There isn't a magic number. Let them take all the risks with hits - they'll need to do exceptionally well to overturn a 20 pt deficit.

If Liverpool gets a good striker to feed, who also goes down easily i the penalty area Henderson could be gold for that price.

Increased share of penalties and set pieces as well as general improvement/not having to run for 2 etc. Could be massive potential there. Price will reflect this though I fear.

Who may look to make a little money on the last day of the season in games with 'nothing to play for'.

-Palace could make 2.4million buy jumping to 10th If they get three points and West Ham & Everton lose or draw with a large goal swing.
-Leicester may look to kick QPR while they're down and earn 1.2mil by jumping above WBA on goal difference who face a tricky fixture.

“He is staying at Madrid – end of,” Balague said. “There is no story there. Gareth Bale is going to be at Real Madrid next season.

“Is Gareth Bale the happiest? Is at the best he can be at Real Madrid? Certainly not.

“But there is more to come from Gareth Bale at Real Madrid and of course he would like to play in a position where he is more comfortable, play in a position similar to the one that made him famous and made him cost €101m.

one thing I think needs looking at next season is player positions

How are players like hazard & mane midfielders whereas Enner Valencia or naismith are fwds?

what is best way around this, do fpl need to create new positions such as defensive bids, attacking mids etc.

    1. Kings of Lyon ★
      • 15 Years

More positions would really complicate things and they would lose a lot of players. They need to keep it simple. I think the way it is works great theres always going to be some OOP as managers try different approaches.

This has really come about because football has shifted from 4-4-2 to 4-2-3-1 so the 3 that play behind the striker now are almost like forwards. Don't think it necessarily needs changing though.

I think they allocate Enner and Naismith because they are forwards.

      Like Mirallas when he arrived…
At Olympiacos he was a striker but then Martinez played him as a winger.

Not convinced a team that just scored 6 won't score against a shaky City defence so I don't like B.
