The transfer of Mikel Arteta to Arsenal this week has many a Fantasy manager eyeing up the new Gunners midfielder. Priced at just 8.0 in Fantasy Premier League (FPL), Arteta looks, potentially, a real value for money option this season, bringing a much-needed maturity to the Arsenal playmaker role in light of Cesc Fabregas’ departure to Barcelona.

In today’s Members Article, we delve into the statistics from last season, looking at a variety of factors to ascertain whether they offer a hint at just what Arteta could offer Arsenal –and, of course, Fantasy managers- in the campaign ahead:

Hello Jarvis double rise, think I'm going to keep him beyond the WC anyway now, which was not my original plan.

With Young however I'm thinking the opposite.

Arteta isn't mobile enough to play wide at Arsenal. I'm surprised Moyes even used him there at Everton.

He always played his best football for Everton when he was out on the wing, didn't he? Although I guess that was mainly pre-injury, when he was more mobile than he is these days.

I don't think so. In 08/09 he was moved centrally and played much, much better. Before that season, I didn't really rate him.

Interestingly, Wenger bid for him in the January of that season, as Fabregas did his ankle ligaments and was out for several months. the bid was knocked back, and Wenger went for Arshavin instead.

I don't think Arteta will be rotated if he's fit. Although Arsen has a youth love I think he realises he needs experience in the key positions... but I'm getting Arteta so may be blinkered.

    S.Taylor, Ward, Boswinga, Brown, Enrique

    Young, Silva, Jarvis, Dyer, Brunt

    Suarez, Rooney, Dzeko

Jarvis I'm very keen on, reckon Wolves are in for a top season. Only just put Brunt in , not sure on him, he would become Petrov if I do get Baines in. Dyer is nothing more than a 5th player, no better option at 4.5.

All set pieces for a defender, dead cert for assists, probably the main creative force in the team now. He's like a good midfielder with the bonus of the occasional clean sheet. Burnt me so many times last year, can't afford to leave him out again.

Oh and also with the propect of an Everton DGW coming up it's basically now or never if I get him in, so much re-jigging would be needed that I can only really afford it during a WC.

Agree, agree on his worth to the team and FPL. However, when the rest of the team are playing badly, it makes it harder for him to earn points. EVR just aren't scoring goals. I'm hanging on for two games and then will probably sell on.

Bit wary of a midpark sans Mata and Young tbh.

Rooney is as close as you get to essential in the Sun.

With the ridiculous amount of points you get for being liked by the Sun journalist (5 points for a goal vs 8 points for being 'Star Man'), you just can't leave him out - especially when he's got form like this.

Well being a man of the match in a 0-0 draw or a defeat doesn't get your team far, so I don't think you've really convinced me that winning a man of the match is worth more than a goal.

Plus, as Barry Glendinng has said on Football Weekly, the ratings made in the papers (which is what this is based on) are thrown together at the very last minute without any thought, so you can easily predict that a big name like Rooney is likely to win the Sun's award most of the time even if there are more worthy winners elsewhere on the pitch. For it to score higher than a goal is totally bonkers.

But I'm assuming you're an ex-pro from your comment, so maybe I'll bow to your experience here.

The argument wasnt about who awards the points, it was about the man of the match being more deserving of praise than the goalscorer. Which is the why live matches reward the best player with the champagne.

But basically you are saying that if a midfielder dominates a game from start to finish, then dribbles past six men in the last minute before sliding it across to heskey who from a yard out miskicks it onto the post only for it to bounce back, hit him on the arse and end up in the net, he should get less points than Heskey?

Actually, my argument was about who awards the points. As Anorak says, it's all about being liked by a Sun journalist.

In your example, the mid would get an assist and almost certainly 3 bps while Heskey would only get 4 for the goal so yes, your mid would end up with more points than Heskey.

A fantasy football game which scores points primarily on goals and assists is very rarely reflective of true football, in fact only the Metro game really comes close.

Initial thoughts - 1. not surprising, as Liverpool is a largely Catholic-followed team (large Irish settling in Liverpool).

      2. not surprising that this article has appeared on a Chelsea website - a traditionally protestant team with links to Rangers.

Not sure about the pundits thing. Liverpool have the most pundits because they have been successful in the 70s and 80s, so the most successful (and therefore most respectable) ex-pros of that age would be ex-Liverpool ones. This also explains why ex-Arsenal players like Dixon, Keown and Merson are involved now too. United don't have as many because most of them are now manager (copying Lord Ferg).

A bit sensationalist but an interesting read nonetheless. Incidentally, i hate the rendition of YNWA.

The club history topic is always one that amuses me though. Much like Stan Collymores ridiculous statement on 606 one evening that the Premier League, in its current form, should be scrapped, many fans place a clubs history as more important than current success. Collymore claimed that the Premier League should be designed, similarly to that of Super League, whereby the positions in the league are decided primarily on fanbase and history. As such Leeds, Forest etc had a place at the expense of clubs like Wigan and Hull (then premier league).

One caller, a Leeds fan, suggested why make the distinction now and suggested that Wigan, for example, were making their history now. At a much higher level, Chelsea are doing the same.

Personally, i am very proud of Huudersfields history and for our wonderful three times champions of England run under Herbert Chapman, however, that should never be used as a reason why we should be held in greater esteem to clubs that have never won anything and yet currently reside in the top flight.

      Just read this.

Fine article as far as it goes, but complete crap. Surely 'the anthem' is more to do with their working class, unionist (work not ireland!) roots. No denying that football, or rather supporting a club, gives many of the human wants that religion does, but Liverpool more than most? I say burn this guy for sacrilege...oh, wait.

    How's this wildcard monstrosity looking?

    Given, Ruddy (maybe Vorm)
De Laet, Warnock, S.Taylor, Brown, Baines
    Silva, Mata, Barton, Cabaye, Dyer
    Rooney, RVP, Best

    0.6 in the bank.

I plan to keep Baines for the next two fixtures then change him for a 5.0 ish defender giving me funds to upgrade Leon Best to someone like Dzeko. I'm not confident that Dzeko will start the next match so am happy enough to risk not having him. An undifferential so to speak. All input gratefully received, if you think it's shit then fair enough.

    Ps
Yes I am aware that there are three Newcastle players in my side, I may be biased but I think they are pretty good options at their respective prices.

But there was a MUCH higher chance of him doing piss all. You can't keep him in there in the off chance that a shock result will come from the game.
You can get away with that with say Rooney (this season) or RVP (last season) but not Baines.

You're right, I doubt many people expected him to do well in that game. But that is an isolated incident that absolutely does not prove that Baines is "fixture-proof"!

People didn't expect Baines to do much in the away games at Arsenal, Liverpool, Chelsea and United. And he didn't.

I agree witn you about Dzeko - Mancini could rest him and give the nod to Tevez. Mata is a gamble but he should get good gametime with his late cameo v Norwich.

I'm currently holding onto Baines, but very undecided as to how long I will keep him. I don't see a problem with keeping for the next two with an Arteta-less Everton to see how how he and Everton function with goodish fixtures.

I think Spurs have fairly tricky fixtures for the next few, so I'm not in a mad rush to fit any of their lads in just yet. Saying that I think its about 50-50 for Dzeko to start given their upcoming European game. I think Tevez will play v Wigan.

Just a guess though I have no solid evidence for that assumption.

I've been thinking about changing Nasri for Mata and Klasnic or Long for Suarez...or I could possibly change Brunt or Cabaye to Mata and keep my current forwards.

    Any ideas?

    Thanks =]

Take Ryan Taylor out. He his under massive risk as Santon will play.
Otherwise I think with the impending return of Gerrard I'd downgrade Adam and upgrade Klasnic or Long, whichever has the worse fixtures.

You think Simpson will Continue to start AtB?

Tough to say, I think so. But Raylor has done well so he could move to RB with Santon LB, however Simpson is slightly (very slightly) better defensively so I expect it to be Santon LB Simpson RB. Santon can play both sides though so it is pretty hard to call.
Just go for Steve Taylor or Colo instead 🙂

            Cheers 😉

Made my bed with Simpson in it and will hang on for now until the w/c. The SUN/NEW rotations are a bonus with defenders.

Being harsh on Simpson there. Considering that Raylor genuinely can't defend whatsoever, calling Simpson 'very slightly' better than him is very unkind. 😉

I don't rate Simpson highly, he does a job. Just about. He's ok. ish.

simpson could be the new bardsley. full back who's done nothing in his career attacking wise then goes on a mentally jammy run of attacking points

Oh don't remind me about that frace.

Bloody Phillip Bardsley, the most defensive of full backs.

I was actually thinking about that, but I thought that Gerrard would more likely rotate/replace Lucas?

Adam and Gerrard without Lucas in midfield would be ridiculously slow, open and wasteful. Liverpool would get thrashed every week.

It looks like fpl have changed the "rules" for multiple price changes between gameweeks. The target does not double after the first rise and triple after the second. Sure glad I decided to wildcard. Dzeko could go up .4 at least and many others .3+ this week.

      That's fine but....

He was going to be my first of two free transfers this week, but my increasing feeling (shared by one or two others) is that after a hectic international schedule he may get a breather v Wigan.

Aye, good though if you got him in on WC like me and intend to punt him from your final team for the very reason you give.

It appears that Young went up a second time with only a little more than 36,000 NTis after the first rise.
