Arsenal fail to find the net at home to Sunderland as their double Gameweek 37 ends in bitter disappointment. A third successive shut-out helps the Black Cats defence prosper and seal their top-flight survival for another season.

Arsenal’s misfiring attack repelled by Black Cats

Arsene Wenger elected to reshuffle his starting XI for the first match in seven matches – drafting in Jack Wilshere and Kieran Gibbs – as the Gunners were held to a 0-0 stalemate by a determined Sunderland outfit. The North London club failed to net in three consecutive home league ties for the first time in six years, much to the disappointment of those mangers who’d backed their plethora of attacking talent to flourish in the double. Arsenal’s midfield starters conspired to deliver zero attacking returns across the board after an own goal from United’s Tyler Blackett earned them a 1-1 draw at Old Trafford on Sunday.

Olivier Giroud once again flattered to deceive as the spearhead of the Gunners’ attack, extending his goalless streak to six matches. Despite Arsenal’s dominance of possession (75%) and chances (28 to Sunderland’s seven), the French marksman only mustered three attempts at goal (one on target) – one fewer than Black Cats’ second-half substitute Steven Fletcher.

On a positive note, investors in Arsenal’s back line profited from their first clean sheet in four matches, with bonus points going the way of Laurent Koscielny (three), Hector Bellerin (two), Kieran Gibbs and Per Mertesacker (one apiece) for their exploits at the Emirates.

The threat of rotation in the Baggies clash weighs heavy after Wenger conceded that it’s “possible” he’ll rest players on the weekend after admitting his team look fatigued.

In light of Giroud’s downturn in form and Arsenal’s upcoming FA Cup Final against Aston Villa (30 May), Wenger could well be tempted to rest his premier frontman for West Brom’s visit. That being said – unless Wenger wishes to field Theo Walcott or Alexis Sanchez up top – there isn’t a natural stand-in within the Gunners’ squad, given that Danny Welbeck has yet to return to training as he recuperates from a knee injury. The likes of Walcott, Wilshere and Tomas Rosicky will be pushing for starts against the Baggies after featuring last night and those who invested heavily in Arsenal for the double could now be at the mercy of Wenger’s weekend tinkering.

Steadfast Sunderland banish relegation fears

In much the same way Hull City’s rearguard defied the odds in their double Gameweek 34 and secured back-to-back cleans sheets, Sunderland’s resolute defence emerged as the real winners of Gameweek 37. The Dream Team was a sea of red and white, with all five of the Wearsiders’ defensive starters earning a spot.

Costel Pantillimon was in imperious form, rebuffing the Gunners’ relentless waves of attack and notching eight saves in the process. Meanwhile, Patrick van Aanholt – the most popular Sunderland recruit prior to their double with 45,000 net transfers – was perhaps unfortunate not to earn a single bonus point for his marauding display at left-back.

Since Dick Advocaat took the helm at the Stadium of Light, only Arsenal (five) and Burnley (six) have  conceded fewer goals than Sunderland in the league, which is testament to the Dutchman’s insistence on tactical discipline. Nonetheless, a fourth successive clean sheet for the Black Cats looks unlikely as they gear up for visit to Stamford Bridge on Sunday – a fixture in which Chelsea boss Jose Mourinho stated he intends to field his strongest starting line-up.

    Opinions on this?

    A) Benteke and Dann

    or

    B) N'Doye and a 7.3m or less defender? (Kolarov or Luis/Azpi I guess, already got Terry).

Fantasy Football Scout daily hot topic

Last season was all about consistency, with players like Toure, Suarez and Sturridge offering a reliable source of points this week.

This season has been the polar opposite, with Arsenal players letting many down in Gameweek 37 and big name stars failing to deliver consistent points returns throughout the season, with the exception arguably of Hazard.

If last season was all about consistency, what has been the theme of this season?

Is it the emergence of budget options? Has it been to take more risks with captaincy? How will 2014/15 be remembered?

      Key points this season:

      1) Jump on - and off - bandwagons at right time. E.g. Mane, Sanchez, Silva, Baines

      2) Finding the right DGW punts - e.g. Vardy, Benteke, Philips, Austin

That's a great point, and linked into it being the year of the budget striker. Arguably this is the year when price became irrelevant.

Definitely not captain risks - captain Aguero if he's fit 🙂

The budget players - Austin, Kane primarily made things a bit easier to get players you wanted in

      1. Ruth_NZ
        • 10 Years
        10 years, 6 months ago

Oh, Andy, that's so wrong. The captain poll has been miserably poor on many occasions.

I don't have previous seasons to compare with but for me a key success factor this season has been to take tactics and formations into account when selecting players.

For example, Sanchez was great from October to mid-January when Ozil, Giroud and Ramsey were out injured. He was mostly playing centrally and everything was going through him. But from February onwards when he returned from injury and everyone was fit he has been nowhere near as effective from a FPL standpoint.

        Sanchez GW7 - GW22: 122 points @ 7.62 per game
        Sanchez GW25 - GW37: 61 points @ 4.56 per game

Aguero has been similar but in his case the difference can be associated with whether City have been playing 4-2-3-1 or 4-2-2-2. I don't have time now to trawl through game by game but certainly his end of season return to FPL points-scoring form has coincided with Pellegrini dumping his 4-2-2-2 at last.

For next season I can say right now that if everyone is fit at Arsenal I will not have Sanchez in my FPL team (unless I see a major tactical shift in how they play). Sanchez will always score points but not enough to justify his presumed 11.0m+ price tag under current circumstances.

Conversely I will always want Aguero if I believe City will be setting up 4-2-3-1 but not otherwise. A lot depends on whether City appoint a new manager because I can't see Pellegrini using Bony as a bench player all season. To justify his presumed 12.0m+ price tag I want Aguero as "point" striker in the penalty box where he does all his best work.

The key lesson I've learnt , and should of learned last year

If a player from big team starts scoring well and he is very cheap get them straight away regardless if you think they are a flash in the pan or not

Ramsey last year & Kane this ate obvious examples.

This is the season where cheap options are popping up like pimples on prom night..

High team value is a curse since those options are "too cheap".. For example: Puncheon has great stats lately and is playing a crap defense.. Silvas stats aren't that good and he is playing a good team.. but I think I'll go Silva since Puncheon will leave £5m ITB

The timing of getting onto the cheap bandwagons has been crucial. Owning Downing, Siggy, Austin and Kane at the right time is pretty much synonymous with a good rank as there were limited options for expensive players.

I've tried to make pretty much all the obvious moves and avoid sudden decisions based on gut feeling.

Seems to be working quite nicely as the rank is amazingly high.

In fact, had I had at least some of (1) Agüero and Tadic on GW8, (2) Benteke / Phillips on their DGW and (3) Mane on GW37, I might be winning the whole thing.

Harry Kane. OK, his recent form hasn't been spectacular, but having a sub 6 million forward outperforming most players meant budget could be thrown around elsewhere, increasing the likelihood of everyone getting the players they wanted.

Coupled with slow pace rises, most active players had little differentiation between their teams.

      Three key themes for 2014/15:

      1. The irrelevance of price rises/falls. TVs of 106m are common place everywhere. I'm not sure if this is a good or a bad thing tbh.

      2. The Year of the Hit. I've never taken so many but it came to my attention in the last eight gameweeks of the previous season, that if I wanted to improve my rank, a hit was needed. My best gameweeks have often been when a hit was taken. Taking hits has crucially allowed me to save my WC to week 34 and allowed me to jump from 17k to 5k.

      3. This has been a year of flexibility. I've never swapped my gks so much but it was a worthwhile tactic and it needed to happen. Whereas as last season you could rely on a core group of players-hence why so many ranks were poor from the better players - this season, flexibility was needed because so many players had surges/dips in form e.g. Aguero, Sanchez, et al.

A far more enjoyable season though.

lots of our theories coming true, even if it required hanging in there.

e.g fabregas doesnt do 2nd half of seasons, di maria doesnt score enough, costa is a nutcase and ideally needs pens, hazard should outscore fabregas by 50+ points, chelsea defence will come good, yaya's last season was a set-piece freak one.

plus a nice sprinkling of new twists, e.g silva becoming a goalscorer suddenly, downing becoming good randomly, kane's emergence etc.

My lack of chelsea is scaring me. I assume clean sheets from the DF and attacking points from Hazard...

    A) what moves do you think he will make trying to close 30 points + 2 free transfers

How many times this season has he scored more than 30 points than you in a week?

I'm guessing none. This is not a very tough final GW at all! Captain Aguero and don't take a point hit. You will win.

im in similar situation32 pt lead,gw36 i was 30 behind, then went 17 in front, increased that to 32 gw37, so there is that fear i suppose if u can do it,they can,as hard as it is ! im ,looking at lukaku for giroud, hes in better form and agaibst a leakier defence, im going to cap aguero as he doesnt have him
im also looking at san to hazard, or hendo to young, good luck

Several options here. I'm 20 pts ahead in my main league. I'm tempted to "de-differentiate" my team compared to the guy in 2nd. Key difference is he has Silva, I have Hazard. So here are some possibilities:

    A. Hazard to Silva
    B. Larssen to Bolassie (or Puncheon)
    C. Giroud to Gomis (or Lukaku)

If I don't move Larssen, I'll have to play Cambiasso or a 4th DEF.
    Thanks

Toss a coin for Ramsey/Cazorla on the bench. Ramsey more likely to bring points but more likely to be rested. Play Kane and go:

      Krul
      Terry - Schlupp - Vlaar
      Sanchez - Hazard - Silva - Mata
      Aguero - Vardy - Kane

      Panti, Ram/Caz, Dawson, Alder

While I love the bonus system I cvant help but its flawed for 0-0s like last night. Kosc and Merte didnt actually do any defending and when they did they were poor at it. Sunderland were bombarded and managed to keep the CS. Surely Panti and Oshea should have cleaned up with the bonus

I don't completely agree with this line tbh - Kosc and Merte didnt actually do any defending and when they did they were poor at it. Especially for Koscielny.

But yeah, it's harsh that Sunderland defenders didn't get BPs for the job they did.

That was on the basis Sunderland had a few chances in the second half. Maybe I was a bit harsh as they probably sweeped up well and cleared their lines when needed.

Yep, this was mentioned on the scoutcast. Some kind of extra save pts or bonus allocation for goalkeepers make more than six saves and keep a clean sheet perhaps? Pantillimon was by miles the man of the match, yet not recognised in bonus.

Haha yeah, as soon as Sunderland managed to pass Arsenals midfied then it was almost a highway to Arsenals goal for Fletcher, PvA, Defoe etc... the Arsenal-defenders pretty much played an ok game with some short sideways passes and got 3 BPS

Think it's a bit harsh to say Mertesacker and Koscielny did nothing!

Anything they had to do they did well - first to everything. Main difference is the Arsenal defenders did all the defending.

With Sunderland it was spread - Defoe was constantly tracking back for Bellerin and helping out PvA.

First to everything? In like 50% of the situations where Sunderland managed to pass the midfield on the counter-attack it became very dangerous

Not sure, watching the match right now and not once have they looked like scoring having gotten through the midfield.

At the same time, the Sunderland defenders and Panti definitely did far more work. So it's silly they got nowt.

Pretty much this. In the first half especially Sunderland didn't have a sniff. I know it was mainly 2 on 1 (kosc+Mert v Graham) but they did the job they had to and especially Koscielny did it well.

Like you say though - Sunderland defenders did far more work, but Arsenal had more attempts so you could say they didn't do it as well 🙂

      • 16 Years

It's not too far off - but the reward for pass accuracy for defenders seems to outweigh the blocks and tackles which seem to me to be a better indication of how well a player is defending. It's certainly a lot easier for a defender to complete 90% of the passes than it is for a midfielder - so maybe weight it similar than they do for goals. A goal for a striker rewards bonus more than that for a defender, so why not do something similar for the passing stats? Seems fairer to me, and not too complicated to administer.

cant see how a defender making goal line clearance isnt as important as an assist.
