Arsenal fail to find the net at home to Sunderland as their double Gameweek 37 ends in bitter disappointment. A third successive shut-out helps the Black Cats defence prosper and seal their top-flight survival for another season.

Arsenal’s misfiring attack repelled by Black Cats

Arsene Wenger elected to reshuffle his starting XI for the first match in seven matches – drafting in Jack Wilshere and Kieran Gibbs – as the Gunners were held to a 0-0 stalemate by a determined Sunderland outfit. The North London club failed to net in three consecutive home league ties for the first time in six years, much to the disappointment of those mangers who’d backed their plethora of attacking talent to flourish in the double. Arsenal’s midfield starters conspired to deliver zero attacking returns across the board after an own goal from United’s Tyler Blackett earned them a 1-1 draw at Old Trafford on Sunday.

Olivier Giroud once again flattered to deceive as the spearhead of the Gunners’ attack, extending his goalless streak to six matches. Despite Arsenal’s dominance of possession (75%) and chances (28 to Sunderland’s seven), the French marksman only mustered three attempts at goal (one on target) – one fewer than Black Cats’ second-half substitute Steven Fletcher.

On a positive note, investors in Arsenal’s back line profited from their first clean sheet in four matches, with bonus points going the way of Laurent Koscielny (three), Hector Bellerin (two), Kieran Gibbs and Per Mertesacker (one apiece) for their exploits at the Emirates.

The threat of rotation in the Baggies clash weighs heavy after Wenger conceded that it’s “possible” he’ll rest players on the weekend after admitting his team look fatigued.

In light of Giroud’s downturn in form and Arsenal’s upcoming FA Cup Final against Aston Villa (30 May), Wenger could well be tempted to rest his premier frontman for West Brom’s visit. That being said – unless Wenger wishes to field Theo Walcott or Alexis Sanchez up top – there isn’t a natural stand-in within the Gunners’ squad, given that Danny Welbeck has yet to return to training as he recuperates from a knee injury. The likes of Walcott, Wilshere and Tomas Rosicky will be pushing for starts against the Baggies after featuring last night and those who invested heavily in Arsenal for the double could now be at the mercy of Wenger’s weekend tinkering.

Steadfast Sunderland banish relegation fears

In much the same way Hull City’s rearguard defied the odds in their double Gameweek 34 and secured back-to-back cleans sheets, Sunderland’s resolute defence emerged as the real winners of Gameweek 37. The Dream Team was a sea of red and white, with all five of the Wearsiders’ defensive starters earning a spot.

Costel Pantillimon was in imperious form, rebuffing the Gunners’ relentless waves of attack and notching eight saves in the process. Meanwhile, Patrick van Aanholt – the most popular Sunderland recruit prior to their double with 45,000 net transfers – was perhaps unfortunate not to earn a single bonus point for his marauding display at left-back.

Since Dick Advocaat took the helm at the Stadium of Light, only Arsenal (five) and Burnley (six) have  conceded fewer goals than Sunderland in the league, which is testament to the Dutchman’s insistence on tactical discipline. Nonetheless, a fourth successive clean sheet for the Black Cats looks unlikely as they gear up for visit to Stamford Bridge on Sunday – a fixture in which Chelsea boss Jose Mourinho stated he intends to field his strongest starting line-up.

    Koke:“I have a contract with Atletico, I want to accomplish things and I am happy here. Of course I’d like to be Atleti’s Gerrard.”

    So that either means he's staying at Atletico for good or he's going to try and move to Chelsea. 😉

    With 2FT and 0.5 ITB my team for this week is as follows -

    Schmeichel
    Terry Huth Vlaar
    Sanchez Ozil Hazard Cambiasso
    Aguero Giroud Kane

    Skrtel PvA Larsson

    Thoughts?

    A) Kane and Larsson to Jelavic and Sissoko
    B) Kane and Skrtel to Cisse and Kolarov
    C) Kane and Ozil to Cisse and Silva
    D) Ozil and Skrtel to Arnautovic and Ivanovic

    My aim was and pretty much always is a top 10k finish. I currently sit at 10,174. Which of these moves looks most likely to allow me to slip into the top 10k?

    A. Ozil -> Bolasie

    B. Ozil -> Yaya

    C. Ozil -> Bolasie & Kane -> Lukaku -4.

    Have a comfortable lead of 35 in ML now, and I'm 2 points behind top 10k..

    The main issue with my team at the moment is that I have to play one of PvA(che), Toby(mcy) and Dawson(ars) - I'm thinking I can play PvA but I'd prefer to transfer in a defender..

    Or would it better to play PvA and use the transfer on this front 8?

    Hazard Sanchez Silva Ramsey Cazorla
    Aguero Kane Vardy

    Myhill

    Bellerín | Schlupp | Terry

    Ramsey | Hazard | Silva | Sánchez

    Benteke | Vardy |Agüero

    Subs: Krul | Grealish | van Aanholt | Alderweireld

    Bar Myhill they all play at home, but I prefer him over Krul. I have 1 FT and 0.8 left in the bank. Been looking at doing Ramsey > Bolasie for the last week and captaining Benteke. Any other suggestions?

    Morgan, Ivan, Skrtel
    Silva, Sanchez, Cazorla, Ozil
    Aguero, Kane, Benteke

    Panti, Pva, Cork, Baird....1FT...1.1ITB

    I'm ranked 771 and want to finish top 1k (I have a £100 bet with a mate that I will). I am also 21 points off the leader of my £1000 1st prize mini league. So I'm in two minds, I want to punt but also want to consolidate.

    Should I bring Hazard back in? Would have to be for a hit. Something like Ozil + Caz --> Bolasie + Hazard -4. The leader of my ML had Hazard though.

    Any other ideas?

      Don't get Hazard for a hit, essentially that's just blocking the leader while taking a -4.

      I'd look at Cork -> Bolasie and start him over Kane...

        It's very annoying, but I am 0.1M off that move. Cork is 4.3M, Bolasie 5.5 😡 . I had thought about doing that move already. The thing is, if I dont get Hazard he could easily end my hopes of a 1k finish.

          Go for it then - I'd say if Costa plays, he's as likely to be in the points as Hazard. There's a question mark on Hazard's motivation, I would guess Costa will be more keen for the final game.

      No imo. A hit for a straight striker swap in the final GW is risky. Lukaku has to score a goal just to break even. And what if Giroud scores? He could. If you think Lukaku is going to get a massive score, then go for it, but its risky.

      If you have the cash and no pressing issues, why not? Would perhaps prefer Silva though

      I'm an owner and obviously could have done with more points - but other than for the Giroud shot late on I think his saves were pretty routine.

        They looked routine.. but I thought they were better than what It looked. Holding the ball or either saving the ball to a particular space where the DEF was.. was impressed

    Looks like I'm stuck with Kane now. 2 FT's - De Gea> Kasper + Larsson>Silva make most sense to me this week?

    De Gea
    Kos Was McShane
    Haz Fellaini Larsson Sanchez
    Kane Giroud Aguero(c)

    Hamer Boyd Bertrand PvA

      Looks good. What about Howard as an alternative? Maybe Puncheon instead of Silva if that move would leave you short for Silva

        Hmm maybe. Will set tight for the pressers. Did intend getting Tekkers in for Kane to be honest but can't risk two injury doubts with the threat of rotation etc

    Anyone fancy recommending a GW38 transfer for me? Seems like there are no obvious transfers I don't really have any pressing issues that I can see....

    Thinking of bringing in Puncheon for an Arsenal mid (they might get rested). The alternatives are a Newcastle player (who though?) or Lukaku/Jags (for who?)

    Courtois

    Morgan Terry Skrtel

    Hazard Caz Rambo Sanchez

    Aguero (c) Benteke Vardy

    1 FT, 0.3m ITB

    (Myhill)

      It's a sold team, Tinks. Wait and see if Wenger gives any clues - Sanchez to Walcott might be on the cards and that could be a very lucrative (if risky) move.

    a) Wickham -> Gomis/Cisse/Austin and play Giroud & Cambiasso, Henderson 1st sub

    b) Wickham -> Gomis/Cisse/Austin and play Giroud & Henderson, Cambiasso 1st sub

    c) Giroud -> Lukaku/Gomis/Cisse/Austin and play Cambiasso & Henderson in a 3-5-2, 1st sub Skrtel, Wickham buried on the bench

    rest of team to start excluding those mentioned in questions

    Ospina (Harper)
    Ivanovic Vlaar Huth (Skrtel PVA)
    Hazard Sanchez Yaya
    Benteke

    Mignolet
    Clyne, Moreno, Vlaar
    Silva, Sanchez, Cazorla, Ozil
    Aguero, Benteke, Kane
    (Pantil, Cambiasso, Toby, Baird)

    1FT £1.4m

    Should i use my FT to get Clyne out or should i risk the potential 1-2 points and upgrade elsewhere?

      Too much reliance on Arsenal midfielders in there, 3 games on the bounce with no goal scorers isn't a good sign

      1. Elijah's Wood
        • 11 Years

        You're right, might ship out Cazorla in that case, possibly take a -4 hit just for fun.

        I fancy Lukaku in for Kane, but then there really isnt any stand out midfield option for this week, could go for a Palace mid but theyre just as unreliable as Arsenal - anyone of the 3 could score

          • 14 Years

          Yeah it's a tough choice this week, I have Ramsey & Sanchez myself and I'm considering Ramsey > Bolasie, but I'm definitely going to be weighing up the options once the press conferences have been done.

          Also, quick note - Lukaku has never scored nor assisted against Spurs

    Currently leading my rival by 20 points. Already done Skrtel -> Wasilevski to get funds.

    Hendo -> Hazard as a block move for a hit or maybe Caz instead?

    Myhill (pants)

    Wasi-Terry-Rose (Toby,Pva)

    Sancehz- Cazorla- Silva-Hendo

    Aguero-Kane-Gru

    A) Alderweireld -> Smalling / Vlaar / Jenkinson - If not I have to play PvA(che)

    B) Cazorla -> 8.9 max punt..Mane / Bolasie etc - if an Arsenal-midfielder gets rested I have Vardy with good fixture first on bench

    19 point lead in the ML

    My team

    Migs/Myhill

    Kosc/Clyne/Rose/Schlupp/Naughton

    Sanchez/Silva/Ozil/Coutinho/Phillips

    Aguero/Kane/Vardy

    Rivals team (apparently he is taking a -4 this week)

    Panti/K Davis

    Ivan/Skrtel/PVA/Schlupp/Yun

    Haz/Ramsey/Caz/Hendo/Cambiasso

    Aguero/Gru/Kane

    Apparently he will be going against the majority with his captain choice, I'm thinking Aguero. What changes, if any, should I make?

      aguero has to be the safety choice

      chelsea have looked flat and that is what mourinho clubs who have the championship sealed up typically do going back to 2004 in all leagues
