In the wake of Calum Chambers’ summer switch to Arsenal, Nathaniel Clyne enjoyed free reign of the right-back berth under new Southampton manager Ronald Koeman. The Crystal Palace youth product has since established himself as one of the most in-demand full-backs in the league and a top pick on the Fantasy scene.

The Statistics

After starting just 20 league matches in 2013/14 under Mauricio Pochettino, Clyne was afforded a 5.0 starting price in the Fantasy Premier League (FPL) game.

His Fantasy potential was manifest from the off, in light of a goal and assist within the opening trio of fixtures. Four bonus points and three clean sheets for Southampton in the first five Gameweeks bolstered his appeal and encouraged 630,000 mangers to invest in Clyne prior to Gameweek 6 – in turn causing his value to rise to 5.5. By the end of Gameweek 12, the Saints notched another four shut-outs and Clyne had grabbed his second goal of the campaign, boosting his value up to 5.8.

Notwithstanding Clyne’s paucity of attacking returns (one assist) from there on out, and the fact Southampton registered just six more clean sheets in the matches he started, the England international boasted a hefty 32.5% ownership on the eve of the final Gameweek – more than any defender. Ultimately, Clyne was subject to the highest price rise (0.9) of any Southampton player this term and the third-highest price rise of any player in the league.

Among Southampton’s full roster, only their top scorer, Graziano Pelle (149), recorded a higher total score than Clyne (142) throughout the course of the season. In terms of the league’s full complement of defenders, the Saints defender ranked joint-third (alongside Phil Jagielka) behind the high-powered Chelsea duo of John Terry (177) and Branislav Ivanovic (179).

Clyne’s points per game average (4.1) equalled Ryan Bertrand’s, with his output further aided by a stellar disciplinary record (only four yellow cards) and a decent collection of bonus points – only Jose Fonte (16) chalked up more than his team-mate (15) this term.

The Prospects

Clyne’s current contract at Southampton is due to expire next summer, casting doubt over his future at the Hampshire club amid interest from Manchester United and Chelsea. That being said, manager Ronald Koeman is optmistic that Clyne – who’s recently changed agents – will put pen to paper on a new deal:

“Still confident that he (Clyne) will sign a new contract but I think next week we will know about his situation.”

Even if Clyne elects to renew his contract, there’s the lingering fear that Southampton – given their lack of Champions League football – will lose a selection of their most-prized assets for the second year running, with the likes of midfield stalwart Morgan Schneiderlin already angling for a move away. Clearly, if Saints face another summer of extensive reshuffling, we’ll have to re-evaluate their worth from a Fantasy perspective.

Clyne is destined for a price hike off the back of his eye-catching season, with a cost of around 6.0 looking the likeliest scenario. In that price bracket, investors will expect a significant goal threat yet – despite an early-season flourish – Clyne was unspectacular in that regard, drawing blanks in all but one of his last 23 league starts.

Certainly, at that price, his popularity is bound to take a turn for the worse as we look to cheaper alternatives for our five-man backlines, with West Brom under Tony Pulis sure to be on many a shopping list.

The Saints’ goalkeeper situation is likely to be key to our assessment. With Fraser Forster expected to be sidelined for the first few months of the new campaign, it remains to be seen whether Koeman will dip into the market to strengthen between the posts. If the Saints boss keeps faith in his current back-ups options, one of Kelvin Davis or Paulo Gazzaniga could well be the favoured route into the Southampton backline until Forster is fit and available – both stoppers will certainly be cheaper than Koeman’s first-choice defenders.

Much could also depend on Toby Alderweireld’s situation. Southampton have the option to wrap up a transfer from Atletico Madrid but if the Belgian chooses to move elsewhere, the likes of Maya Yoshida could even come into contention at centre-half as a more budget-friendly option.

I know there are plenty of boffins around. Has anyone ever worked out what the perfect FPL team making the perfect transfers would have looked like?

EF wants to know what's the maximum score that could have been achieved. That is a hideous problem because you're not simply constrained by making one transfer a week: you'd have to consider saving a transfer, and taking hits.

I've started to try, but you would need a fullllll data set from FPL towers.

once you have that, writing the formula would be straightforward.

It would be best done with much of the FPL players left out, probably inserting outliers manually (a budget random defender who played 3 games throughout the season, yet made an assist/goal, plus 3 CS's, for example)

when i say full data set, what I mean is the ENTIRE season's FPL stats for every player, every week, with price data (dates of price fluctuations, etc)

yeah, there would need to be a table containing daily-price values, for each player.

Could sift through comments in this forum, though, that wouldn't take long. What is that, 9 months, 270-ish days of scrubbing any post with the term "risers" in it?

This is possible, but with a table like is linked above, I think someone else would have done this already if it could be done.

15*14*13 is 2730, so that is close to what your possible bench choice is from your outfield XIV without putting any formations restrictions in place, so his number seems valid.

There are 2,760 possible FPL team sheets every GW with a static player pool of 11 + 4 bench (incl. keeper)

            Possible formations:
            gk + 5, 2, 3 = 2*1*10*1 = 20
            gk + 5, 3, 2 = 2*1*10*3 = 60
            gk + 5, 4, 1 = 2*1*5*3 = 30
... so, given a team of 15 FPL players, there are 110 possible starting XI's in a 5-defender formation

            gk + 4, 3, 3 = 2*5*10*1 = 100
            gk + 4, 4, 2 = 2*5*5*3 = 60
            gk + 4, 5, 1 = 2*5*1*3 = 30
... so, given the same team of 15 FPL players, there are 190 possible starting XI's in a 4-defender formation

            gk + 3, 5, 2 = 2*10*1*3 = 60
            gk + 3, 4, 3 = 2*10*5*1 =100
... and given the same team, again, of 15 FPL players, there are 160 possible starting XI's in a 3-defender formation

Whether you know it or not, your starting XI is actually just 1 of 460 possible teams at your disposal.
AND that doesn't account for your bench!
Since each formation leaves you 3 bench players, with 6 possible arrangements, multiply the total by 6.
There are 2,760 ways to arrange your team every GW.

According to my calculations, building on earlier work by Ludo and Balders, the best affordable dead team squad I could find was as follows:

Optimal affordable dead team for 2014-15(3-4-3): (GW1 paper value 100.0, would have finished 3rd with 2444 points but missed the early points from Costa, Fabregas & Rooney)
        (G) Heaton(BUR,4.5, 150 in 38 GWs), anyone at 4.0(B)
        (D) Ivanovic(CHE,7.0, 179 in 37), Terry(CHE,6.5, 177 in 37), Bertrand(SOU,5.0, 140 in 34), Bellerin(B2) (ARS,4.5, 34 in 6), Yoshida(B3) (SOU,4.5, 38 in 8)
        (M) Hazard(CHE,10.0, 233 in 37), Sanchez(ARS,10.5, 207 in 34), Silva(MCI,9.0, 191 in 32), Sigurdsson(SWA,6.0, 154 in 32), Downing(B1) (WHU,5.5, 93 in 21)
        (F) Aguero(C) (MCI,12.0, 216*2 in 33), Kane(V) (TOT,5.0, 191 in 33 + 48 in 5), Austin(QPR,6.0, 176 in 33)

Me no boffin.but me know that serious code required to let me know this.

Incidentally, what would knowing this achieve? You're an intelligent bloke so why not have an intelligent guess? The sum of all the best scores for each of the 38 weeks would be a good starting point for a ball park figure.

A lot of you are really underestimating the number of permutations, as you can sell players and then get them back in later. The fact that you can make multiple transfers and have the further complication of offsetting that against hits makes the possibilities an astronomical number. I seriously doubt that in any season two teams would ever make the same transfers over a season, and teams obviously number in the millions, not thousands. Also, the suggestion above of the sum of the best scores of each gameweek would be nowhere near a possibility.

I have been thinking about this calculation recently and I'm pretty sure it's far too complex to solve - in practical terms anyway.

No I'm not underestimating the complexity or the number of permutations.at all! I said above that it would take some serious code to calculate it. I'm a bridge player (albeit a moderate one) and some of the figures involved in that game are mind blowing. Some time ago a chap called William Bailey wrote the Holy Grail of computer bridge analysis - it was called Deep Finesse and it works out the optimal way that 4 x 13 cards can be played in a given contract in the game of bridge.

Similarly it would be possible to write the code to give you the maximum possible score for the past season. All I am saying is that it is possible ... but even with all the required data available it would take a talented programmer some time to achieve.

Which players have been more explosive - the top five forwards or the top five midfielders?

Key: Double Digit Hauls (DDH); Bonus (B); Minutes Played (MINS).

    —————————————
    ..............DDH......B.......MINS
    Aguero.......6......27.......2532
    Kane..........7......32........2581
    Austin........4.......22.......3065
    Costa.........5......18........2069
    Pelle..........4.......14........3281
    Total.........26.....113.....13528
    —————————————
    Hazard.......9......42.......3373
    Sanchez.....8......29.......2944
    Silva...........6......28.......2646
    Cazorla......6.......23.......2990
    Fabregas...4.......26.......2884
    Total.........33.....148.....14837
    —————————————

The top five points scoring midfielders hit a double digit haul 7 more times that the forwards.

Even though the midfielders have played more minutes than the forwards, they still have a lower minutes per double digit haul. The midfielders hit a double digit haul every 449 minutes, whilst the forwards got one every 520 minutes, on average.

I also factored in bonus points, to see if they have given the midfielders an edge. They received 31% more bonus points than the forwards.

Does this mean that the midfielders are more explosive in general? Or is this down to the bonus point system tipping it into the favour of the midfielders? If the bonus point system stays in place next season as it is, should we be keeping a closer eye on the midfielders and distributing more funds their way?

I think it was just a rubbish season for forwards caused by a lot of the big teams playing one up top. Only 2 big hitters in that top 5 for forwards, compared to 4 in the midfielder list.

Mids scored more if you gargamel results indicating a 3:5:2 is the way to go at times. Haz got handy 11 point hauls from single goals scored (penos at times) whereas Costa and Aguero sometimes only got 5 points for goals scored (bookings messing up baps).

Swansea City are closing on a £3.5million deal for French left-back Franck Tabanou.

The 26-year-old Saint-Etienne defender had talks with Swansea in January but they failed to agree a deal.

However, negotiations have resumed this week and he is expected to sign in the coming days.

It may mean most of the BFS 'players' are now gone, and WHam will be a club that plays proper football now, good thing offensively for us FPLers. 😉

        Terrible defensively though.
And West Hammight do well to remember the fortunes of Bolton, Blackburn and Newcastle after his departure. All 3 relegated. Where were west ham whenhe tookover? Yep. The championship.

I do worry for them defensively, at least Pulis should still be a manager in the PL! 😀 But seriously, they need the right manager to take over, and I think WHam are a club that can really do well in the top flight, realistically at some point they should be established and no longer really fear relegation.

If they play it right, the stadium could see them become a far bigger club who compete for things.
This season though, they will be at risk. New squad, new manager, time to gel etc. A bad start could lead to serious trouble.

I get what you mean, but I think it's just all down to wording. Instead of people getting 20 years and out in 10, would it be better if they were just given 10 in the first place and do 10?

I think it would help stop public outcries if they just shortened the sentences in the first place rather than halving long ones. And like the monkey says, increase their sentences instead for bad behaviour.

Realistically they will still all serve the exact same sentences, but it would 'seem' better to the public.

One would assume it's supposed to be the best premier league squad based on how they have played qualitatively.

        DDG

        Clyne, Terry, Fonte, Azpilicueta

        Sanchez, Matic, Fabregas, Hazard

        Kane, Costa

Bench: Adrian, Bertrand, Henderson, Cazorla, Bolasie, Austin, Aguero.

Indeed, it validates it as on par with the male game.

The audio files will allow for the creation of a player named Dowie, could be some great dodgy looking created players. 😀

Anyone who regularly watches Ligue 1 and/or Serie A here? Want to know how good are some specific players. Milanista around?

I generally have less of an interest in leagues and more of an interest in specific players so it will depend on the players.

Not very popular ones but here you go:

        De Sciglio - Milan
Marquinhos - PSG from what I have seen, he's really good but haven't seen enough
        Iturbe - Roma
        Batshuayi - Marseille

Iturbe is top notch from what I've heard.

De Sciglio showed promise a couple of years ago but between numerous injury issues and problems at the club he has regressed. Still young but he was poor this season.

Seen a bit of Iturbe, he caused Milan a lot of problems when coming off the bench a few weeks ago. At the moment he seems to be one of those young wingers that has pace and dribbling skills but lacks an end product. Think he's only scored 1 league goal for Roma.

Interesting. Cheers mate. Saw them at some stage and was impressed by them and wanted to know how well they are doing now.

I rather like Batshuayi and feel he can really advance at Marseille over the next couple of seasons. Still improving on his finishing though so I don't expect him ready for a big move anytime soon.

I personally think Marquinhos lacks a physicality to his game.

      Lurking 😉

I generally only watch Milan these days so may not be able to help.

Well then you would know how good is De Sciglio? And if you know anything about Iturbe?

I will be changing my display name for the season ahead, although am unsure to what exactly ....

Reccomenend a name now - it can be ANYTHING and if any decent / random shouts I will change it right here right now

It is taking some time to get over this end-of-season feeling - weird, unsure, slightly uneasy... almost like the emotions after the first time you slept with someone, caught out for doing something illegal or writing off your parents car.

I, like many others have also only played FPL seriously, for a short time - half of last season and now a full season 2014/2015. Ending up around the 4k mark, romping to a 300 point win in my ML - I obviously had a lot of luck and it leaves me wondering if I can even come close to doing that well again?

The upside - FFS has been "filtered" to a degree - the posters on here now, are purists. There is still plenty of valuable information around, people sharing a little foresight and yeah, overall - far more quality.

To the team of FFS, this is truly a great site! Keep up the great work and all the best for 2015/2016.

European football associations could boycott future World Cups if Sepp Blatter is returned as Fifa president, according to the Scottish FA.
