Team of the Season – Eden Hazard

For the second successive season, the ever-reliable Eden Hazard racked up 14 goals and ten assists as Chelsea clinched the title at a canter. The Belgian delivered attacking returns with metronomic regularity for Jose Mourinho’s men, never going more than two matches without producing points, whilst a change in the Bonus Points System boosted his appeal further.

The Statistics

Hazard kicked off the season in a steady yet unspectacular fashion, chalking up three goals and two assists in the first 10 Gameweeks. With new team-mate Cesc Fabregas delivering a goal and nine assists over the same period, there was a feeling that the Spaniard would provide real competition for our attentions, with Hazard dropping slightly in price from 10.0 to 9.9 in the Fantasy Premier League (FPL) game.

Hazard’s subsequent ten starts – which harvested five goals and three assists – soon had Fantasy managers scrambling for his services, though, as his cost rose to 10.7 by the time Gameweek 21 came around. A further six goals and five assists followed in the remaining 18 fixtures, engendering a peak value of 11.4 in Gameweek 35.

Among the full roster of Premier League midfielders, only Alexis Sanchez (12 goals) netted more than Hazard (14), while the Belgian’s ten assists positioned him joint-fourth in that regard. The former Lille starlet ended the season as one of only three players (the other two being Sergio Aguero and David Silva) to reach double figures in both goal and assists, emphasising his dual threat.

Hazard’s wealth of attacking returns granted him the highest total score (233) of any player, ahead of Aguero (215) and Sanchez (207). The winger’s most productive Fantasy season in a Blues strip was predicated on consistency of returns, rather than explosive bursts of form. To illustrate, the PFA Player of the Year contributed to more than a single strike on just two occasions – when he grabbed goal and an assist in Gameweeks 16 and 31 – and failed to score more than once in any of his 38 starts.

On the flip side, Hazard was a prime candidate for captaincy throughout the campaign due to his consistency. Drawing blanks in only 16 of his 38 appearances, he enjoyed a wealth of bonus points (42) – 10 more than next-best Harry Kane. This, in turn, gave him a points per game average (ppg) of 6.1, which was second only to Aguero’s 6.5.

The Prospects

Casting an eye over Hazard’s progression since making the switch to Stamford Bridge three years ago illuminates the consistency of his output – he contributed to 24 goals in the past two seasons and 25 in the one before that. The afore-mentioned changes to the BPS merely heighten Hazard’s appeal for the campaign ahead and there’d be no surprise to see him move to 11.0 or 11.5 when the Player Price List is rolled out in July.

Given his reliability of both starts and Fantasy returns – in addition to spot-kick duties – it will be difficult to look beyond the Belgian. Certainly, Fabregas and Oscar will offer cheaper options in the Blues midfield but, as evidenced last term, Hazard more than justifies the extra outlay – he ultimately finished 68 points ahead of the Spaniard.

Up front for the Blues, Diego Costa’s average of 5.8 ppg is almost on a par with the winger’s, though with Aguero likely to be the prime Fantasy choice amongst the premium forwards, it remains to be seen whether many will look to Costa as a route into Mourinho’s attack. Having missed 12 fixtures through injury or suspension, the Spain international is a far less reliable candidate than the Belgian, and with the likes of Branislav Ivanovic and John Terry offering secure options in defence, Costa – in spite of his 20 goal-haul – faces a tough task to usurp Hazard as the chief route into Chelsea’s attack.

Ville Ronka closely translates to "wanted to jerk off" in swedish 🙂 It's like a name someone who want to make fun of Finland would use, as they also speak swedish there but with a funny accent. Sooo, it's probably not the guys real name.

I'm from Finland and to me the profile looks like a legit Finnish FPL-profile. At least the mini league won has guys who have legitimate Finnish names (although one team name translates "FC C-O-C-K") The name is not that uncommon, as Ville is a common first name and Rönkä is a common last name as well.

Had never thought that this name is a matter of laughter in Sweden. 😀 Makes sense though

Why ludicrous? There are a lot of decent FPL managers around. What other criteria do you want to use? HOF is inadequate as only entrants to the FFS league are even included.

My point is that only something like winning it twice could make it uncontestable.

well because someone could win in twice and have some terrible ranks in other seasons. Ludicrous was harsh but I don't see how having a two time winner would make it any less subjective

                I guess.

In a way I wish there was no HOF and that rankings were invisible.

This has been my first FPL season and I have had the freedom to come on here and post anti-conventional views without anyone paying much attention. But if I got good at the game I'd have to stop doing that so much because some people would start to be influenced by what I was saying (which actually already happened to some degree with N'Doye).

TL discovered at the beginning of season (when he was posting his squad and all transfers in advance) that a number of players were copying him exactly, player for player and transfer for transfer. In some ways that's an awkward situation to be in.

There are quite a few players on here who believe that, and they are generally the most helpful and informative.

Most of your posts are arguments for or against something where you set out a case. TL's tend to be, "I'm making this transfer and anyone who doesnt is a moron". He cant complain when people copied.

TL is now up to 2nd in the FFS Hall of Fame, so it isn't surprising that many follow his advice, but some went too far in copying his team and transfers exactly. After a few weeks of this, he put a stop to it one game-week by announcing that he was going to make one transfer and then making a different one instead.

Your own comments and articles also contain plenty of interesting ideas, but it would be nice if we could see how many of your ideas you actually use for your own team and how successful they are. You don't have to announce your transfers in advance, so we wouldn't be able to copy you. Trying to copy someone else's team a week later just doesn't work!

Almost all the ideas I make an original post about are ones I end up using in my team. I finished 12k in my first season despite starting as a complete casual and misplaying the first two DGWs completely through lack of experience.

The ideas when I am answering someone else's question are different because the context is usually different to my team.

I understand the value of linking a team if you are asking RMT type questions. But that is something I very rarely do and even then only in a limited way.

Linking a team has more to do with transparency and trust. Most people post their teams when they do an RMT and not rely on people checking their link.

Having seen Ruth_NZ's team though, he is honest about his rank and transfer intentions.

I think some people don't post their link specifically because they don't like being judged on it or sharing their identity and it could be as much about your mini league rivals not read it's you (as many read FFS).

I occasionally like to see someone's team to see how they are getting on. Not having the ability to do that would frustrate me particularly as I respect Ruth quite a lot as a poster. I suspect many feel the same way.

Not wanting to be judged I think doesn't really measure up as an excuse. People would simply judge them on not having a linked team and then dismissing them. I think thats much worse.

It is also sometimes interesting to see how ideas work out in practice. For example, Ruth has talked about playing 4-4-2 instead of the more popular 3-4-3, and it would be difficult to judge how successful that has been without a team link.

There have also been a few posters in the past who have deliberately offered bad advice in order to nobble their potential rivals, though I am sure that Ruth is not one of those.

I can understand though that he may be unwilling to reveal his identity to his mini-league rivals.

people copying transfers, what a pointless thing to do. This is actually a fairly simple game, essentially we are betting on ags, assists and clean sheets with prices, budget and transfers the tactical side. Now copying a successful punter at the bookies I could understand but how is fpl even remotely enjoyable if you hand over the very few decisions we make as managers to somebody else. I don't get it.

I wouldn't want to copy someone else's team and transfers exactly myself, but there may be some who think it is an easy way to win their money mini-league, or to be able to claim an undeserved high ranking.

The latter is much more valuable IMO. To win it you need a fair share of luck on top of the skill. Consistent high finishes like Ville and TriggerLips pretty much takes luck out of the equation.

You could argue that most past winners had a pretty good history. Maybe more like consistent top 10k finishes that might not quite reach Triggers average. Where does the comparison end? how long is a piece of string?

I suppose you'd consider the top in the hall of fame to be the best in the world. But has he ever won FPL? surely you can't be the top of the world if you've never won a major? Its like Tennis rankings I guess, its very much a grey area.

Don't think that's a great analogy cos there are far more people in the world capable of winning FPL but far fewer are capable of winning a tennis major.

Its not easy to find a good analogy tbf. It wasn't that long ago when I remember a female tenis player being top in the rankings but she had never won a major yet always managed consistent high finishes. Serena Williams at the time was hit and miss and sometimes bowed out early so was lower in the rankings at the time. Yet if you were to compare them Serena Williams was the better tennis player.

man it was crazy. Fpl was late starting, well later than usual, because they were making big changes to the site. I had tracked some devs on twitter by finding which group did the fpl game and was enjoying the little snippets of info between them. Anyway somebody else did the same but let the cat out of the bag and this one fella got absolutely bombarded on twitter by fpl addicts 😀 I think this is probably why they did the slow drip of prices the following year. Keep the wolves well fed and they won't eat you.

"Rönkä is not that common surname as there are only 487 men [in the Finnish phonebook I think] with that surname, but Ville is very common first name"

Is what a Finnish friend said on another forum, when I was joking that he should call all of the Rönkäs in Finland to track him down. 😆

I value consistency in assessing the best ever.

That said I would rather win the whole thing than be consistently good 😉

Lets say you were #2 in the HOF and had just won the FPL. Would you be the best in the world? or will they guy who's still #1 in the HOF be the best in the world?

The only drawback with HOF is it only includes players who enter ffs leagues. There could be plyers out there with a better record who dont use this site

In that case the number 2. But I don't think any of the previous winners come close to Ville Ronka's record.

Out of the previous winners who has the highest HOF rating?

The highest previous winner is Matthew Martyniak ranked 15

the best two finishes among the top ten HOFs are 23rd for Alianto Henry and 35th for myself. Ronke only has a 90 to his name

Matthew Martyniak has a good case for being one of the best ever.

Yep its very grey. I can't accept Ronke as the best in the world if his best finish is 90th. Ultimately I don't think it can be decided by the HOF and perhaps its simply impossible to know who the best in the world is.

Best might be whoever has the highest seasonal average score, probably Ville Ranka at roughly 2300 points. I've played moderately for 4 years, poor 6k this year yet have a better seasonal average score of roughly 2200 than hof no. 2. Theres a huge gap in points between the winner each year and whoever just sneaks into top 1k as I have twice.

Just had a quick flick theough this seasons top 20, and while some had some previous good form, not all did. A few had a top season right out of the blue, while quite a few had warmed up with a good season the previous one. Bit of a mixed bag
Noticed quite a few from the FISO forum in the top 20

Don't know anything about maths, read that John Nash died tragically a few days ago. He got a Nobel prize for developments in gaming theory. I reckon a maths/computing wizz could devise a program to guarantee winning FF using performance metrics, fixtures, nailedonness!, trends in transfers amongst the top 10k - basically Jinswick (brilliantly played by the way for 2nd).

The very best records and achievements are likely to involve a bit of both.

When we ask managers to win the FPL title in order to be crowned the best, I think we are asking quite a lot. In order to win FPL outright, I think we'd all be in agreement that you'd have to not only manage well, but also have some fortune to beat every other manager.

It's worth considering, why out of the almost 50 years of previous history they had before this season, this years top 10 have, only have 1 top 1k finish between them, and barely more than 10 top 10k finishes?

The best managers will have decent records, but are they guaranteed to be able to win, finish in the top 1k, or even finish in the top 10k?

There should be two categories - one for the managers who consistently achieve a fairly high ranking nearly every season (such as Ville Ronka and Triggerlips) and the other for managers who have achieved an even higher ranking at least twice but sometimes finish with lower rankings (such as Petter Gullestad, Simon Walsh and Julian Hancock, who have all had two top 100 finishes, and Ulryk Nyland, who has had three top 200 finishes).

It may be that those in the first category tend to play safer, while those in the second category might take more risks.

And perhaps there should also be a third category for those who have won FPL most convincingly. Some of them might have played brilliantly in their successful season but not been willing to continue putting the same amount of effort into the game after winning it.

It's a good point, certainly that a larger variation with the template could result in a similar amount of points but instead of a couple of 1k finishes, ending up with say a 100 and a 5k.

Interestingly at the end of 13/14, Julian Hancock (known as HancockJr), had played the same seasons as Ville Rönkä, but had scored more points. However recently Ville has beaten Hancock for quite a few seasons and just taken the lead on points scored.

Smarty Pants over at FPL Discovery did articles about stats from the 2013/14 season last year and one guy had 5 top 1K finishes, which was two more than Ronka this time last season. Obviously the FPL ID has changed for this season so the link isn't correct anymore so we can't see what his best season was. Hope Smarty Pants does the same for this season.

I think so. In general, his record for Argentina is nowhere near his Barca record (e.g. In terms of scoring record). At Barca, the whole team is based around putting Messi one-on-one with either the last defender or the GK. Maradona was able to inspire both club and country to win things.

In terms of pure goal scoring he is still miles behind Pele.

Pele's goal scoring record isn't as good as people think. People always talk about his thousand career goals but those are only if you count friendlies. No one else's goal scoring record ever accounts for friendlies. Still a phenomenal record mind you...

Even if you take out friendliest I expect he would have far more than Messi (who has a phenomenal amount of goals himself). And, remember, the Brazilian league was considered as good as the top European leagues in those days.

    Which Arsenal attacking player?

The end of the season showed how getting the right Arsenal attacker was key to success.

But with rotation across midfield and attack and expensive, more nailed on options among Chelsea and ManC's ranks which Arsenal forward/ midfielder should we be starting 15/16 with?

Most likely, we saw the best of them at the back end of the season without Europa League. Defence is their main asset in my opinion, if Stones stays he could be a bargain. Attack just lacks consistency unless you want to plump on an overpriced Lukaku.

I agree Lukaku does not look like a season keeper and it looked pitiful last year but I think he could still be a decent short term punt . Baines does not look like a great option but Coleman could be a great shout

I don't think the Europa League has a big a negative affect as people say. The problem though is that I think they over achieved this year and won't do anywhere near as well this year, which is further going to strengthen opinions that Europa Legue ruins a team's season.

Aye that's it. I'm not saying being in the Europa doesn't have a negative affect, but many of the teams who make it tend to be overachievers in the first place and always will be. So chances are the majority of them will have a worse following season anyway.

I did some research about this a while back. If I remember right, EL teams have finished on average of 3.2 places lower in the PL than they did in the season when they qualified.

Of course this means that some perform as well as the season before and some fall off a cliff. But 3.2 places is equivalent to an average loss of around 10 points and that's quite significant.

Indeed. The thing is though is that when you're at the top, the only way is down. And while The Europa positions aren't actually the top, you can pretty much count out the top 4 as they are generally spoken for each season.

It's very unlikely that any of these Europa qualifying teams will have a better following season due to being at the top of their potential anyway.

Liverpool fans won't like you saying that but it's true.

Liverpool's finishes in the last 6 seasons: 7th, 6th, 8th, 7th, 2nd, 6th. They are an Europa League level team with one outlier when Suarez virtually carried them to 2nd on his own.

Rodgers hasn't improved them at all. He's just gone native and fallen for the Liverpool mythology hook, line and sinker.

The added incentive of Champions League qualification for the winner certainly makes that a feasible option. as you said, they're an upper mid table side, nothing to lose, everything to gain.
Also on the depth issue, we might see Southampton using their impressive youngsters rather than spending.

Carvajal probably the best solution considering Real Madrid bought Danilo but again I think that's highly unrealistic considering he's been in a number of La Liga teams of the year, is Spanish, etc.

You can't always buy world class talent and to be honest, that has never been the policy of Man Utd. Look at hugely successful players like Carrick for example.

English, improving your current team, good potential to improve, proven in the PL, pretty sure Clyne fits all those boxes.

That's not to say if Carvajal was available I wouldn't get him instead but the likelihood is he's not, we can't have another season of Valencia only (Rafael will leave) so we have to strengthen. Clyne is a perfectly viable and solid solution.

Also look at Herrera. He was not one of the best midfielders in the world but we still bought him and he's done very well at United with plenty more scope to develop.

United don't run a Galacticos policy.

Shaw will become the best LB in England and possibly one of the best in the world. He's still very young and in 3 or 4 years time he will peak.

Fellaini was a Moyes signing, enough said

Blind was a necessary short term signing for the sake of gaining CL qualification.

Rojo has been a bit of a fail so far and was probably a desperate signing when we missed out on Hummels.

Don't get me wrong about Potential. United will buy players with the potential to become the best in the world as well. Eg Shaw and Herrera

Clyne doesn't fall under that category how? He's had a better season than Shaw did before we bought him and he'd be available for much cheaper. He's only 24.

I would say the same about clyne. Hes only 24 and has been ones of the best in england since he turned 22.

United bought the likes of rafael smalling jones etc. And they werent world class back then. Sure they were an year or two younger than what clyne is but clyne at 22 has been better than those guys were at the same age.

You dont need world classnfull backs to succeed either. A good defender getting giving you 7/8 out of 10 38 games a season is good enough, as mourinho has always said

Agree with Nate. If 15-18m gets you Clyne, you buy him, have 'proven' PL talent and then you can focus on more important players such as a Carrick replacement or CB/CF.

Then why not bid 15 off the bat? I agree, his region is 15-20 but absolutely everyone knew that £10m wouldn't be considered. So that's a waste of time.

However, it makes me think Brendan is staying on next season.

Southampton will have set their price on him long ago, with him refusing a contract. Point is, that 10-15 versus 15-20 idea isn't really a goer here because everyone knows that it wasn't even going to be considered...

Need to utilise Wisdom and Flanno instead, only going to be so much to spend this summer so it needs to be spent wisely and on other key positions Striker>DM>GK. If Lucas leaves that is, though some real steel there would be a massive plus.

completely agree. There's no footballing reasons I can think of why Manquillo got frozen out. Must have been personal or something to do with loan terms as some have speculated. He is a very tidy young player. With him flanno and wisdom on the books, all young and improving, we're ok at right back.

I've seen Manquillo being described as the Spanish Glen Johnson, all the talent, none of the application. Wasn't too sure myself until I heard that.

I reckon a fall out with Brendan occurred, as seems to happen often! Exactly, that's why I question the entire thing. Personally I wouldn't be surprised if they did sign a RB with more experience, but to go straight for Clyne instead of addressing other areas first seems odd to me.

Given that the Premier League starts up early(8th August), we'll have 4 gameweeks(including the one after transfer deadline day, which falls following the first international break) where real life transfer are likely to affect the makeup of most sides. Better safe than sorry with initial sides?

This is me. I'm a member here but have only posted occasionally.

I played FPL casually between 2008-2011, but never maintained an interest through to the end of any season. I stopped playing entirely for three seasons.

The day before the 2014/2015 season started, I decided to give it another try and take it a bit more seriously - a friend told me about this website so I signed up and entered a few money leagues. When creating my team, I did try to re-access my old account, but it wasn't possible - presumably they delete dormant accounts. So my actual history should be something like 3 seasons of 6-figure ranks (at best), 3 blanks, then my 7th, although I do prefer the way it looks now 🙂

How does everyone select their initial teams?

Emphasis on fixtures? Or an eye on pre-season form?

Short term(3/4 games) or longer term?

Big players in first then fill the gaps? Start with the bargains?

Defenders: fixtures, end-of-Season form, bonus potential.

Everyone seems to think that end of season form and the last day of the season is misleading because some clubs have nothing to play for and others have everything to play for . There are not guarantees Leicester will be as good next season as they were at the end of the last season .

1- put together as good a team as you can focusing on the first few fixtures and captain options. Ignore pre season form
2- tinker with it until you have an unrecognizable team at the deadline full of pre season performers.
3 - fix it with wildcard

      What I will do:

      1. Decide on my "must have" and "want to have" players;
      2. Look for the players I think are under-valued;
      3. Decide on my normal team formation (4-4-2, 4-3-3 or 3-4-3);
      4. Decide on my squad structure, building in flexibility for transfers at different price points;
      5. Fill the gaps with cheaper starting players that rotate efficiently and jiggle it around till it works.

I will mainly concentrate on the first 4-6 weeks in terms of fixtures because with a good start I'll have less likelihood of taking hits.

I go through a pretty similar trail of thought, obviously most of which relies heavily on personal bias and opinion which can be altered into the FFS mindset and general rule of though very quickly.

Yep. I will have to be very careful with that because I want to pick up on players/options I may have missed but don't want a standard template starting team.

I won't be putting up a RMT, that's for sure.

6 home clean sheets to every 4 away clean sheets over a period of years without much seasonal variance.

I think something can be done with that. 🙂

I tend to look at the big hitters I want first, put them in and then see how competitive a team I can build with the remaining parts.

Last season I ignored a lot of people on here who felt Yaya Touré wouldn't have as good a season s he had just had. He start off poorly and the fact that I'd built a team around him affected me for the early week.

One of the lessons I've learned is that you are better off getting premium players as early as you can, because they are only going to rise in value considerably once the season starts.

Its easy to baulk at getting, say, Ivanovic in at £6.5m at the start of the season cos his fixtures aren't plum to start off with. But its much harder to try and get him in when he's jumped up to £7m and all the other good players you want have also increased in value.

So you almost used Yaya as a franchise player, filling in the gaps elsewhere.

Are you likely to use Hazard in a similar way next season?

          Yes most probably.

My point was that Yaya had obvious distractions that many on here felt would affect his form early. If I'd have paid attention to that I'd had ignored him and gotten better.

My GW1 MF was truly horrific now that I look back at it:
Yaya, Ramsey, Gerrard, Adam Johnson and Dean Marney

No wonder I had such a woeful start!

It really comes down to price and club really. Take Siggy for example... He was £6m at the start of last season... Swansea main man, yet the year before, e was more expensive and playing at spurs (too much competition) so obviously would have lower ownership.

Interesting to see what price he will be next season, £7m maybe? I tink that will deter many a manager...

      Thoughts...?

I have a feeling next season their defence will be FPL golddust. Towards the end of the season Wenger was saying next season they will probably have a more balanced approach - this change in approach, while keeping the same philosophy, may just be what they need.

Nice season for you Billy. 6th in Old Farts. I recall you being an original member of Old Farts too. Jonty put the code for the league in a pre-season article and it got swamped. I was pretty disappointed tbh, as I had set it up originally for FFS regulars that I knew (and were over 35 lol ). I think 25 were in it and I knew who each player was from being on here.

It ended up with nearly 100 in it. And I don't even know thee guy that won it!

Cheers Roy. I think winning the Old Farts League last year will be my greatest feat in fpl simply because of the number of veteran and really good players in it.
I saw that it got swamped this year, I didn't know Jonty put the code in an article - it wouldn't have been so bad if the new members posted on the site but many of them don't. I think the guy that won is a FISO chap but I could be wrong. Perhaps you should ask Jonty to refrain next season...

Juventus will make a summer move for Man Utd striker Robin van Persie, according to various reports this morning.

Juve have had a good recent history at giving United old boys a second chance at the top level with Carlos Tevez and Patrice Evra impressing as they have charged to the Serie A title and Champions League final.

Van Persie has just a year left on his United contract and Louis van Gaal is in the market for a striker this summer, so Van Persie could be surplus to requirements.

I just always get bored after ~3 seasons. You have so much money, you just end up with a template team no matter which big club you start with...
e.g. buying Hummels, Strootman, Pogba, Bale, Sterling etc

I always use a small team for that reason

Started with Stoke. The budget was that bad I got sacked after 2 and a half seasons and went to Gillingham in L1.

Got promotion next season and Im trying to avoid relegation in the Championship now. 21st at the moment at the January window 😕

My brother plays it quite a bit, he prefers it when it just becomes sims, that way it feels more 'realistic' as he doesn't know the fake players, while he'd know real ones.

I'm the opposite. I prefer knowing the players and the youngsters, and getting the tactics/rotation right during the season.

I'm about to get Stalybridge into League 2 after recently gaining promotion from the south conference. I prefer starting with a side at the very bottom.

I got to a 12k full stadium with Eastleigh in the first season at the PL so I won't rule it out. I just got bored at the time and didn't bother progressing further.

I've just won the CL with Everton after about 15 seasons with a self imposed transfer ban. Can't buy players, can only use homegrown.

It was a worthwhile event when it was the Charity Shield. In the years the money actually went to charity of course.

Understandable though, the papers need to print something each day, so why not make it up, within a reasonable level of expectation.

It is the resonator level that is more and more evaporating I fear. I do agree that they have to fill pages, but it really is just brutal journalism.

I agree, journalism is really getting poor, no attempts to find the facts, but I would say there isn't nearly as much happening as is printed, even if they got the facts, they have pages to fill and an easy way of doing that, that's all there is to it.

I'm sure there's still plenty to write about. People are just inherently lazy and no effort, made up, rehashed transfer rumours are the simplest ways to fill a quota.
