Although the domestic action may be over until early August, there are still a handful of tournaments for Fantasy managers to dabble in over the summer period.

Both the Copa America and European Under-21 Championship kick off in mid-July, with the likes of Harry Kane, Sergio Aguero and Alexis Sanchez fronting their nations’ pursuit of glory. As ever, we’ll we keeping you updated as any official games emerge for either tournament.

Copa America

  • Dates: June 11-July 4.
  • Group stages:June 11—21
  • Quarter finals:June 24—27
  • Semi-finals: June 29—30
  • Third place playoff: July 3
  • Final: July 4

The Copa America finds South America’s most prestigious nations – and two guests (Mexico and Jamaica) – duking it for bragging rights. With the likes of Brazil and Argentina among the 12 countries in attendance, there are plenty of Premier League stars for us to cast an analytical eye over. Chile are playing host this year, with their hopes of clinching the title resting largely on the shoulders of talismanic forward Alexis Sanchez.

Arsene Wenger revealed in early May that Sanchez would sit out the start of the next league season if La Roja were to progress to the latter stages of the tournament. More recently, the Frenchman expressed concerns that Arsenal’s top scorer is in danger of succumbing to fatigue in light of his heavy workload over the previous 12 months:

“I will watch but with a little bit of fear because Sanchez has played 50 games for us and goes there again, having already played in the World Cup last summer. You are a little bit concerned and I feel this competition is a bit too much. I am really surprised that Fifa authorised that. It’s disappointing that they speak a lot about the health of the players but when you look at the competition that is organised, this Copa America, and look at the date of the start of the Premier League, it is not reasonable. Moving the fixture calendar forward deeply affects pre-season and I believe it is the wrong decision of the Premier League to start on August 8. The players have played the World Cup, then you have no winter break, you come out and when you reach the FA Cup Final, you play on May 30 and the European players called up by their international teams play until June 14. Then you start on August 8. If you count six weeks’ preparation, where is the time for recovery?”

This isn’t an issue confined solely to Arsenal and Sanchez; the full complement of Premier League players on display are liable to miss Gameweek 1 if their side puts a run together. Manchester City are more at risk than any other outfit, given that Argentina called up three of their starters (Sergio Aguero, Pablo Zabaleta and Martin Demichelis) for international duty.

Manuel Pellegrini insisted he’ll afford these players 30 days rest upon their return if La Albiceleste make it to the finals stage, effectively ruling them out of the Sky Blues’ opening fixture. Elsewhere in the Argentina camp, United pair Marcos Rojo and Angel di Maria, along with Tottenham’s Erik Lamela have also earned call-ups.

Unsurprisingly, there’s strong Premier League representation within the Brazil squad too, with Filipe Luis, Fernandinho, Philippe Coutinho and Willian all hoping to secure Selecao’s fifth title in seven years. Fernandinho marks the fourth potential starter that could be missing from Manchester City’s opener, which – particularly if allied with a tough match-up – could discourage early investment in their squad.

Elsewhere, Arsenal’s David Ospina, Chelsea’s Juan Cuadrado and Aston Villa’s Carlos Sanchez are in contention for Colombia, while Enner Valencia and Antonio Valencia line up for Ecuador. Finally, Sebastian Coates and Abel Hernandez were selected in Uruguay’s final 23-man squad.

European Under-21 Championship

  • Dates: June 17–30.
  • Group stages: June 17–24
  • Semi-finals: June 27
  • Final: June 30

Over the last couple of days, Uefa have rolled out their Under 21 tournament. You can register here but the official player names have yet to be added, meaning we are unable to start constructing our squads just yet. We’ll be publishing a Guide to the Rule Set and Player Price List articles in due course.

Gareth Southgate will commandeer England’s latest batch of promising youngsters in their quest for silverware in Czech Republic. PFA Young Player of the Year Harry Kane spearheads the Three Lions’ attack, while there are a plethora of other budding talents present from England’s top tier.

As with the Copa America, those players involved in the U21 Euros could be sidelined for Gameweek 1 if their nation negotiates the group stages. On that note, Lilywhites boss Mauricio Pochettino recently vocalised concerns that Kane’s energy levels could suffer in the wake of an enervating nine months. When asked if the striker could miss the start of 2015/16, the Argentine went on to say:

“Yes, maybe. But I am very sure that the FA will take the right decision for Harry Kane and all England players. The problem is that there are different interests. We are a club and the FA are interested in England. He [Kane] is not tired but the problem is if you play a lot of games in the Premier League and the Europa League over a season you expend a lot of energy. It is not easy but it is not about tiredness, it is about next season”.

In terms of the participants, Kane is joined by Spurs trio Tom Carroll, Eric Dier and Alex Pritchard, while Arsenal’s Calum Chambers, Serge Gnabry and Carl Jenkinson complete a sizeable showing from North London.

John Stones, Nathan Redmond, James Ward-ProwseFilip Duricic, Emre Can, Saido Berahino and Danny Ings were also named in their respective preliminary 27-man rosters, with the latter heavily mooted for a move to Liverpool this off-season.

Beyond the known quantities, spotting differentials remains on ongoing pursuit. Among the fringe players pushing for a start next campaign, Pritchard (named in the Championship Team of the Season) and Redmond (13 goals and four assists for newly promoted Norwich City last term) deserve special mentions.

Women’s World Cup

Scouting for next season aside, Mondogoal are running a Fantasy game for the Womens’ World Cup, with cash prizes on offer. The tournament runs from June 6 to July 5 and BBC will be broadcasting every match from this upcoming Saturday onwards.

Daily Fantasy Cricket

Finally, PlayON has branched out to new sports and is running the Official Caribbean Premier League Fantasy Game.

There will be games for each individual cricket match in the Caribbean Premier League, with Free Entry $500 Guaranteed Pot for every fixture.

In addition there will be Daily Games with $1,000 Guaranteed Pots, as well as a Leaderboard (Top 3 match scores added together) with a $1,000 Prize for first place.

The game, along with PlayON’s new and improved site, is now live at www.playon.co

It's mostly commercial these days, I suppose it gives the players a bit of a warm down, though that seems unnecessary. :/

Yes, I can't understand it. It's good maybe for the U-21s for their European tournament or younger members of the squad to get a chance to show (even though they still usually get enough of a chance during pre-season friendlies), but why do senior established players need to play in them, should they not be getting a break...

Again, commercial I guess, usually the club flies to where a major sponsor are based and play an exhibition match, it's probably in the sponsorship contracts that a certain number of 'stars' have to play etc.

Panathinaikos are close to completing the signing of Michael Essien. The AC Milan midfielder wrote on Twitter: "Just touched down in Athens and the love from the Panathinaikos fans was incredible."

According to transfer pundit Gianluca Di Marzio, Essien is set to sign a two-year-deal with the Greek outfit. The 32-year-old will reportedly undergo his medical during this week.

Liverpool are being linked with a shock move for Cardiff City goalkeeper David Marshall.

Reds’ boss Brendan Rodgers is looking for a shot-stopper to put pressure on current number one Simon Mignolet, who has come under fire for his performances this season.

With a budget of apparently £5m set aside for the right man, reports from London suggest it is Marshall who has risen to the top of Liverpool’s hit-list.

I seen we held interest yesterday, personally I think we need to go for a top class first choice keeper, not just someone to replace Jones who'll be off this summer. I suppose that's just how it is. :/

Someone pointed out, very correctly, that they may be running out of options. The way the club and fans are acting, I think you'd need to be mental to become their manager.

Stop gap, waiting for their real target to be available next summer. I guess Ancelotti was aware of this so was taken out of the equation early so he could have his surgery, though maybe not.

Who is their real target though? Wouldn't be Pep, possibly Klopp though he'd be mad to take that job, anyone else? They've ditched Ancelotti, will chew up and spit out Rafa...

              Mourinho again?

I don't know, it's just what I've read, a lot of big jobs will be up for grabs next summer. I think City were also going to bring in a stop gap ( I don't know why tbh) until next summer for the same reasons, though Pelle seems to be staying for now.

None, to be honest. Bale will stay at Madrid though, I believe he has said exactly that. United have pulled into the lead in the Schneiderlin race, reportedly, but I take all of that with a pinch of salt. It is confirmed that Gundogan will leave Dortmund this Summer, his destination isn't known yet.

    Last paragraph Google translated -

The Premiership, Arsenal and, especially, Manchester City have knocked on his door: the talks with the club 'citizen' are constant and fluid. Ferran Soriano and Txiki Begiristain, sports and general manager of the company, want to build a new City around the figure of the Spanish in the midfield. Pellegrini, who did grow in Málaga, and who continue to lead the City works to tip the balance. Isco demand is not economic: I want to play, not money. And Manchester has secured the first and the second.

Anyone fancy compiling a flair XI, I start off with the back four and keeper:

    Higuita
    Phillippe Albert,Sinisa Mihajlovic, Roberto Carlos

Who's the right back? Dani Alves, Sergio Ramos, Cafu?

Lots of options for left back by contrast: Silvinho, Riise, Ian Harte!

Yeah, but Albert wasn't known to be the biggest flair guy over the career. I'd rather have Koeman (not "flair" per se, but was UCL top scorer once, so come on), Blanc (extremely technical player, started as a AMC and scored 144 career goals in top level) or the classic Beckenbauer.

Looking at your options, you seem to equal flair with strong shot. I mean, Riise? Harte? I wouldn't call them flair players.

Or Olmeta for the dribbles and, erm, general show?

            https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=GakrfT7x7Ig

Here's another one that almost cost him when he was still a young guy, at 0:58:

            https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=U67DCGlaNx8

Higuita did the dribbles too, though:

            https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=cr7-1El6SOk

...and maybe more of them, which may partly be because he played in South America, known for less discipline. Although it may also be that we just have less footage of Olmeta as he wasn't international.

Anyway, these flair GK's were not so rare back in the good old days. Nowadays they hardly exist at all. Higuita must epitomise that type, really, so back to the original pick it is imo.

I read it, I liked it, you summed it all up quite well. Not FPL related I think commercially the club are doing really well now, the stadium is finally being done up too, and with the fan base I think big club status isn't in doubt, its the success which is very much so. 😉 I think the signings you'll see Liverpool make this summer will be lacklustre if I'm honest, same with the manager appointed if the Brodge goes. I'd like to believe with the right manager we could do well despite EL, though squad depth is key, which I think we have, but yeah I don't hold much hope for next season.

        Thanks for the comments.

The more I read about it the more I come to the conclusion that FSG don't get Liverpool at all. Transfer committees, insistence on players with resale value, viewing the club as a business before anything else, a coach rather than a manager... Does that sound like Liverpool?

At least Abramovich has been willing to put money in (though the club is now self-sustaining). Syndicates like FSG and others who run US sports franchises seem to be more focused on the money they can take out. 🙁

Lukaku: "I want to win titles, not just be shadowing at the top. I want to know how it feels to play in the big games. I'm 22. It's time to win trophies."

Big words, considering I was particularly underwhelmed with his league performance this season. 10 goals in 36 games? Hmm.

Jesus, what was he expecting, the league in his first season at Everton? Why did he sign then? He's been very poor this season, a big reason in our disappointing season, so it's quite the time to come out with that.

      1. Ruth_NZ
        • 11 Years

He's an awkward case. Could have had a career at Chelsea but wanted it all straightaway. Had he stayed over the last 2 seasons he'd have got plenty of gametime but he wouldn't wait, wanted to be 1st choice. Now he is 1st choice at Everton but that's not enough either apparently.

Are you kidding? Costa missed 12 PL games completely, games in which Remy would have played if not also injured.

Season before the Eto'o signing was caused by Lukaku's insistence on being 1st choice in the run up to the WC (hence the Everton loan).

In both seasons, Lukaku would have got plenty of gametime had he stayed.

Exactly. He can have titles and sit on the bench, or he can be at a decent side and be first choice, but he can't have both. Maybe in a few years, but he needs a lot of work before then as, frankly, he isn't good enough.

So he wants first team football and leaves Chelsea for Everton so that he could play week in and out. Now after just one season, he wants titles, which he would have won this year at Chelsea, immature player. Glad we sold him and for a huge sum too.

I think Lukaku blew it when he missed that penalty in the super cup. Was out a week later. It's all blamed on his own attitude but I think Mourinho decided he wasn't worth fighting for and so far he's been proven correct.

Sebastian Prödl was out of contract at Werder Bremen, and they decided not to extend it. He was at best second-choice in central defence for a team who, despite finishing ninth this season, conceded the joint-most number of goals in the Bundesliga - 65 in 34 games.

Prödl is one of those players about whom Germans say that they were 'born to play in the Premier League' - but this isn't necessarily a compliment. Lots of tackles, lots of headers, lots of 'passion' but slow and with positional and ball distribution problems. For this reason, he's only the reserve centre-back for the Austrian team too.

That said, Prödl always comes across well, writing an open letter to Bremen fans to thank them on his departure. He's also openly contemptuous of player agents ('all I need is a good lawyer').

Real Madrid 'expect' David De Gea to sign for them this summer, says Guillem Balague.

The goalkeeper has been strongly linked with a move, and Sky Sports’ Spanish football expert Balague says his agent is keen on securing the transfer.

“They will work as hard as they can to get De Gea and the expectation is he will become a Real Madrid player, but Manchester United have got a lot to say. They have put an offer on the table which is five times more than what he is earning at the moment, so he has got a decision to make.”

They would need to introduce free trials for that to happen imo. No new player is paying £15 to comment on a site they've never used.

You could read comments but not comment maybe. See what others are doing?

But who would own the rights to your comments?

Besides which, FFS would have to pay me to comment here. My best posts are very exclusive.

I'd prefer member's only comment section so we can discuss member stats.

I mean a separate section. Everyone should be allowed to comment here.

I suggested before like a 'notebook' area, which is similar to the members table section, in that you write something down and post the link on the site and only members can go on the link and read it.

I do actually like this idea, not being able to discuss member stats openly is quite annoying, as it would be interesting to see how other members interpret them.

I wouldn't want the site to be too elitist. Spam posts and endless questions from people who don't reply are irritating, but you run the risk of scaring people away if it becomes closed-shop. For instance, when I came on the site for the first time 3 years ago, a few of the regulars were dropping back a few posts to avoid newbies, and were making remarks about how they should keep to themselves and stay away from rookies.

Now I see why that could be annoying, but for me at the time, I almost went off the site and never returned, as it seemed clear that new blood wasn't wanted. This is an inclusive site, new posters improve it continuously, and demanding membership to post immediately would put people off. If you're new to FPL, and you have to pay £15 before you really know the game/this site, you probably wouldn't.

Endless RMTs and inane questions are a necessary price for the odd gem that comes through. I wouldn't want this site to lose what makes it great, and I think mandatory membership could prevent those gems from joining.

Hahaha I hope it wasn't to specifically avoid me, though I was gravless at the time. A cross-eyed Karl Pilkington was needed to integrate.

It's only natural long term posters are weary of new people,
I always say be patient, courteous and you will be accepted, sometimes it can be slow but the community here are quite warm when they get to know you.

Indeed, as long as are affable, and you provide help and don't just ask questions, then you'll be welcomed. The concern is scaring those people away before they've even posted.
