Here are the best defenders during 2014/15 at earning baseline bonus points under the Fantasy Premier League (FPL)’s Bonus Point System (BPS), which is used to allocate extra points to players at the end of the match.

To find the best I’ve worked out the number of baseline BPS points defenders gain per minute. The baseline points are those where goals, assists and clean sheets are removed giving an accurate figure of how their all round gameplay affects their chances of success in gaining bonus points. I have also avoided times when a player comes on in a match for only a few minutes so that it doesn’t skew the figures.

This is a particularly useful guide to which defenders are likely to gain bonus points if no defenders in their team gain attacking points.

Baseline BPS/min Results

The higher the score the higher the chance of gaining bonus points from all round play.

Top 10 Baseline BPS/min earners

1) Sakho (LIV) & Distin (EVE)
3) Jagielka (EVE)
4) Jones (MUN)
5) Clichy (MCI)
6) Stones (EVE) & Smalling (MUN)
8) Skrtel (LIV) & Monreal (ARS)
10) Mertesacker (ARS)

Conclusion

One of the most striking results is that centre backs are far  better rewarded for their all round play than full backs. In the top 10 baseline BPS/min earners eight out of ten are centre backs. But in terms of actual bonus point allocation in 2014/15 the the proportion levels out, with the number of centre backs in the top ten reducing to six. This indicates a success for the BPS system to ensure centre backs can compete with full backs, who have a far higher chance of gaining BPS points through their more attacking play.

Amongst the top four sides these results could give a good indication of the players with greater potential of gaining bonus points when they have tough matches and a low scoring game is more likely.

For Arsenal Nacho Monreal continues to impress in this area, while for Manchester City Gael Clichy is something of a baseline BPS magnet, although he faces stiff competition from Aleksander Kolorov for a starting spot.

If Phil Jones can remain fit he could prove a savvy purchase next season and for Chelsea Cesar Azpilicueta’s jack of all trades, master of none accumulation of BPS marks him out as one to consider, especially if Jose Mourinho decides to bring his bus for tough away games.

Fantastic research. Gives further depth to understanding why some defenders perform better than others in terms of FPL's bonus points.

It's great and all. But only really useful if they don't change the BP system for next year.

It should be relatively straightforward to re-crunch the numbers based on any new BPS methodology they decide to introduce.

It depends on how he extracted the data. If, as I expect he did (as it's by far the easiest way), he used their BPS totals then subtracted 12/18/24 for each goal etc then it won't be of any use.

But yes, I did that last season and it didn't take too long, just an enormous consolidation in excel.

I can't see a change regarding defender bonus - they've pretty much perfected it this year. But as said if there is a change, it'll be minor, and it'll be straightforward to factor in.

I wouldn't be surprised if they lower the number of BPS for defender pass percentage so we don't see repeats of Arsenal v Chelsea and Arsenal v Sunderland bap distribution

      I reckon.

Clichy is so annoying..he's a beast regarding the BPS , but under constant threat of rotation after a good second half of the season from Kolorov.

Clichy is only annoying for one reason – his presence keeps Lord Aleks in shackles.

Never noticed that before to be honest.

City backline is full of rotation risk, so hardly takes any notes in regards of their bonus potential.

This article sure give me another perspective to some defender - Clichy, Monreal, Distin.

You wouldn't be able to do Can's baseline would you Innsie? Just to see where he stands amongst his colleagues in case he's classed as a defender. Although then again if he plays in midfield like I expect then it would have limited applicability anyway...

I think the bigger story at Liverpool could be Sakho - if he can nail down a start and remain injury free he could do well in terms of bonus.

Yeah, that was surprising, thought Skrtel would be the clear winner.

I actually did have a look at Can when I did this but decided not to post it. It was very low though, somewhere been 0.120 to 0.130.

Is this strictly accurate, Innsie? Baines and Coleman trail Distin and Jagielka by a massive margin so is it a myth that they favour bonus points even when they're not scoring / assisting?

I only raise the point as all creative fullbacks seem to be scored low (Janmaat, Cresswell etc.) so am wondering if there's a problem in how you've subtracted attacking points?

Yes it is accurate. For the players whose results surprised me I made sure to double check.

The creative fullbacks are low in comparison to centre backs mainly due to the CBs getting more clearances, blocks and interceptions. Attacking fullbacks also tend to have a lower passing accuracy - CBs knock the ball about the back 4 a lot whereas the likes of Janmaat and Cresswell are more advanced up the pitch where the opposition has more players to intercept their passes.

West Brom defenders are terrible at BPS, probably because they don't reach the 30 pass mark

Great research. Slightly away from fantasy football, I actually think Monreal was one of the best defenders in the Prem last season

Nice one, Innsie - although there are some flaws in this approach. I particularly don't like the "per minutes" approach. Now is probably a good time to repost this:
