Liverpool announced their first signing of the summer transfer window earlier this week, confirming the capture of former Manchester City man James Milner on a free transfer.

Lured by the promise of consistent first-team football, the tenacious midfielder found a swift resolution to his future after a number of seasons as a squad player at the Etihad.

The History

A local lad, Milner joined the Leeds United Academy at the tender age of ten. Following a six-year education in the youth system, he made his full team debut against West Ham United in November 2002, becoming the second-youngest player ever to feature in a Premier League fixture. Milner tallied 49 appearances and five goals during his two seasons at Elland Road and embarked on a brief loan spell at second division outfit Swindon Town to bolster his experience.

In the wake of Leeds’ relegation in 2004, Milner made the switch to Newcastle United on a four-year deal. Aside from playing in a novel position (Leeds predominantly fielded him on the left, but Newcastle stationed him on the right) Milner struggled to cement a starting berth. Under the stewardship of Graeme Souness, he mustered just 13 league starts in the 2004/05 campaign, before moving on loan to Aston Villa in the following season.

Having notched one goal in 27 league outings at Villa Park, Milner returned to Newcastle for the 2006/7 campaign and continued to thrive, demonstrating his now-trademark versatility by turning out stellar performances on both flanks for the Tyneside team. After serving up a total of 11 goals and 12 assists in 134 appearances for the Magpies, the industrious midfielder moved to Villa on a four-year deal worth around £12 million. Milner’s time at the midlands produced 20 goals and 25 assists across 122 appearances and saw him thrive in a central midfield role upon Gareth Barry’s departure to Manchester City.

Milner plotted an identical trajectory the following summer, signing for City in a £26 million deal. He spent five seasons at the club, chalking up 19 goals and 45 assists in 203 appearances across all competitions. By virtue of the fact he was never a guaranteed starter, Milner only surpassed the 2000-minute mark in his debut league campaign with the Sky Blues.

Since making his senior debut in a friendly match against Netherlands in August 2009, Milner has accrued 53 caps for England. His only international goal arrived in a 5-0 thrashing over Moldova during the Three Lions’ 2014 World Cup qualifying campaign.

The Prospects

Reports indicate that the promise of being handed his preferred role in central midfield was one of the chief reasons Milner elected to join Liverpool, amid reported interest from Arsenal. Indeed, with Steven Gerrard now out of the picture, the utility man looks likely to partner Jordan Henderson in the engine room, plugging the void left in the Merseyside legend’s wake.

Although Milner has admitted he favours a central berth, his versatility does enable the Reds to switch formations with greater confidence. For example, the 3-4-2-1 set-up that Rodgers employed during their mid-season 13-match unbeaten streak could see Milner switched to a wing-back role, a position that Henderson has also taken up.

With Raheem Sterling looking increasingly likely to move away from Anfield this summer, Henderson and Philippe Coutinho, with 162 and 138 points in the Fantasy Premier League (FPL) game respectively are likely to be the most popular candidates for Liverpool coverage in the opening Gameweeks.

Milner’s security of starts, however, suggest he could be another viable option. He tallied five goals and eight assists in just 1749 minutes last term, scoring at a much faster rate (373 minutes per goal) than both Henderson (573 minutes) and Coutinho (584 minutes).

Furthermore, in the last season that Milner was a consistent starter (2009/10) he carded 184 points for Villa, courtesy of seven goals, 12 assists and 35 bonus points. Clearly, then, if Rodgers hands him a regular role, we may well have to reassess Milner as a Fantasy option, after a frustrating period at City extinguished his prospects.

Valued at 5.5 at the start of last season, Milner is likely to be pitched around the 6.5-7.5 mark in FPL next term by virtue of his diminished rotation risk – which could be an enticing price point if he’s afforded license to push forward.

A by-product of his switch to Liverpool should see Jesus Navas further cement the right flank berth at Manchester City. The Spaniard was ousted to the bench for the last four matches of 2014/15 as Manuel Pellegrini handed Milner a starting berth in an attempt to persuade the England international to pen a new Etihad contract. Having signed off at City with two goals and an assist in his final three league outings, Milner is clearly one to monitor for the campaign ahead.

Wow, just checked the results, France 1-4 Belgium. That's of course just a friendly, and you should not draw too much conclusions out of them, but the Belgium outright winners 2016 EC bet that I had made few years ago and had thought to cash out before the EC sure looks much better now.

I think France or Spain will do it personally

France have possibly one of the best squads of recent times imo, so much quality.

Home nation advantage, but all about picking the right team instead of the best players in the squad

Have to say, I like the way France is trying some good new names in attack now. Lacazette, Fakir, Step, also Payet though he is a not so young anymore, they will cause problems to many a defence. Just should also give Schneiderlin a run in midfield.

I hardly believe in Belgium either after their "show" at the World Cup. I kind of hoped them to fail completely and have Wilmots sacked. Don't think he will win it. But it may be that I can cash this bet out for better money before they finally crash out. They will go somewhat far.

I think it will be Germany, btw, who wins it, but that bet makes you no money.

Except for the CF position (Benzema) Belgium outclasses France in every single position and aspect of the game, The maths are simple. Add Jurgen Klopp to the Belgian national team and pick up the trophy.

Still, when you're 4-1 down in a friendly, the match is over. Only because they had new players who really needed to show they could be given a start this semi come back meant anything at all.

Didn't see the match really, but seems strong from Belgians, conceding the late goals means little in a friendly.

Croatia isa good outside bet, indeed, it's a very strong team in every sense. Have to check their odds. They could have gone a very long way in both last EC and last WC were they not screwed by the refs in group stage.

I would count Belgium out of that 4 for 2 reasons:

        1. unimaginative, static play in World Cup got them pretty far because of weak opponents and allowed Wilmots to keep his job despite clearly being inapt.

        2. they've been in a serious trouble in their relatively easy qualification group, struggled to win just any team.

They do have the potential, but I don't think they're using it or are able to use it now. Spain hasn't been too impressive either. I've started to believe more in Croatia. Bet365 gives your money back 33 times if Croatia wins. Think I'm going to take that and just cash my Belgium bet when they meet the first really strong team.

Sounds about right, perhaps 25/1 as that's a popular price with bookmakers (33/1 or sometimes 28/1 is the next price after that in most cases). That's what I got them at anyhow, so fingers crossed.

Ivan at 8m plus 4 playing cheapies = 26m, is it too much in defence with the high cost of premium mids and Aguero?

Definitely 7.5 or more. 179 points ÷ 20 = 9m. I'd like a high price as he breaks my heart - own goals and yellow cards when I have him and goals/assists when I don't! Might just get Azpi for 6m and depend on cleanies and bonus points.

I was thinking 7.5 and 7.0 for Ivanovic and Terry respectively, but it turns out Terry actually got more points over the season (correct me if I'm wrong) so I'm not sure they could justify putting Ivanovic at a higher price. 7.0 seems reasonable if perhaps optimistic. Either way, he's in my team from the off.

    Khedira available on a FT.

Reckon we'll see him in the PL? Few realistic destinations for him.

Arsenal - could do with a decent midfielder to put in a challenge for the title
Chelsea - could work with former boss Mourinho and help aid their European campaign
Man City - Yaya getting older, Fernando useless and Lampard gone. Could bolster the midfield for $$.
Man Utd - Could be a decent Carrick replacement, a chance to play with former team mate ADM.

Not sure that I can buy this idea in the article that Navas will have secure starts at Man City with Milner gone. It seems likely that City will buy a winger (perhaps Sterling). Plus, there is still Nasri sitting there... With years still on his contract, I think he has to get some playing time, though perhaps they use him in the cup competitions.

If you recall, or maybe not...I posted on here about a comment I picked up on a fan, at the tme when Nasri and Dzeko were still playing plenty of mnutes, that there had been a dressing room problem with Nasri, Dzeko and Pell...It sounded like the usual bllx by somebody claiming to be in the know, or so it appeared.

Lo and behold they fell off the face of the earth straight away. Maybe he did know...

One of them if not both should be sold. Its such a waste of talent having them sit out the season on the bench.

Its the fastest field sport in the world and played mostly in ireland. There are 15 players on each team 1 keeper, 2 midfielders, 6 defenders and 6 forwards. The goals are in H shapes. Get the ball above the bar and its a point, get it below and its a goal. A goal is equal to 3 points. The keeper protects below the bar, cant stop it going over the top of the bar really. Shots for points come from all over the field, even up to 80 or 90 feet away from the goal though thats rare, most are closer. Its well worth checking out on youtube. Last year sky showed a few matches which brought it to a larger audience and people seemed entertained by it, especially the all ireland final.

Looks like such a fun sport. Probably wouldn't be easy to introduce in other parts of the world but it'd be a fun social game/activity in schools perhaps as something completely new.

I dont know the details but i think the gaa are trying to advertise it and encourage it in other countries. The level of emigration from ireland is being used as a way to do that as well. For example its played more in australia now as there are a lot of irish people after moving there. Also played in the uk.

I got roped in tbf. I'm not really an AFL fan at all but I needed a job and having sporting ability is the only requirement. So all I do is a school programme that introduces the basics of the sport over a 6 week programme. The big drawcard is that a lot of the skills in AFL are complementary to rugby and its seen as a summer sport so that rugby players can improve on their skill sets by playing AFL in summer. I'm basically a talent scout as well but its on a very small scale until some Aussie big wigs come over and try to sign players for the actual AFL.

Yeah been a big success. Quite a few kiwi's have been taken up into the AFL big time thanks to our programme which runs in primary and high school. The high school competitions are good as well but its always a battle to keep interest up. Its still very slow progress but there is an AFL presence in NZ now which is no mean feat.

I'm just a foot soldier, some of the systems they have in place are very cleaver. Being able to leverage off established NZ sports is a big help. That might be a lot harder with Hurling.

Actually just realised i left out one vital detail. Its very similar to gaelic football about from one major difference. Hurling is played with sticks called hurleys. The ball is a lot smaller and called a sliotar. Players must hit the ball with the hurleys to score. It takes a lot of skill to do well. Its very entertaining and usually higher scoring than gaelic football. For example today, Waterford scored 3-19 to win.

So like a standard shoulder to shoulder challenge in football and/or a standard challenge in field hockey. It really is an interesting mash of sports.

More physical than the soccer one. Most hurling shoulders would be given as frees in football, some even yellow cards.

It would be a stronger challenge than in football. Can get away with tackles in hurling than wouldnt be allowed in football. Knocking the ball off the hurley is another main way to do it.

That is one way it is called hooking . Blocking the ball is another way and it is a much more physical game in general so shouldering the opponent in a much more aggressive way that would leave most premiership players rolling around the place for 20 mins

Would it be like a shoulder charge (now supposedly outlawed) in Rugby League? Or is there some safety rules around it?

Would not be allowed shoulder someone in the front. That would be a free. But there are often very aggressive shoulders to the side.

Really think the women's WC should cut the tripe.

It's like watching the opening rounds of X factor...a few good teams but a lot of awful teams.

I can't imagine it does much for the stature of the sport. I want to see how good Germany really are.

Does anyone know if any research has been done to see where the best women would be in the men's game?

That really is not a good example. The level of women's football is not represented by some cup final from 17 years ago from a league that is not even one of the top ones. Women's football has advanced much faster than men's since then, and if you'd watch for example women's CL, it's good football and your old farts would have nothing on it.

That Germany women's side is pretty damn good. German league is also perhaps the top one, if not the French or American one. This is the German cup final from two years ago:

        https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=i3tk8mw4UUc

It is some pretty decent football and while it does lack some quality when compared to men's CL finals, that lack often adds to entertainment - say, the teams are faster to play ball forward even at the risk of losing it than in men's football, which causes faster turns in it. You would rightly compare this to a men's lower level professional football, but for amateur men already the tempo would be too much. And Andy Gray would be humiliated on pitch.

Of course, Ivory Coast is not a strong team, and that was always going to be a thrashing, but don't judge the level of women's football on Ivory Coast either. Other nations whose women's teams really are strong are USA, France and Brazil. Japan, Norway, Denmark and Sweden ain't too bad either. Some of the best players are from Sweden, for example. When Germany plays one of these nations, it will be a tough match.

Another Barcelona manager set to leave

    http://www.espnfc.com.au/uefa-champions-league/2/blog/post/2482108/luis-enrique-might-leave-barcelona-despite-success

Does his success at Barcelona automatically make Luis Enreque one of the best managers in the world in much the same way as Pep Guardiola?

Yes. I think john carver would win la liga with that side

Pep took over a side who finished third with 67 points, and won the treble, with 87 points in the league (they only earned 2 points from the last four matches, after the title was sewn up).

Enrique took over a side who finished second with 87 points, and won the treble, with 94 points in the league.

Pep brought in Busquets and Pedro from the B team, and Pique from Man United's bench, turning them into world beaters. He oversaw Messi's development from incredibly talented winger to record breaking goalscorer and playmaker. He favoured the team over the individual, letting the likes of Ronaldinho and Deco leave, and built his team around the 28 year old Xavi Hernandez, who along with Iniesta, formed the basis of the tiki taka blueprint that saw Spain dominate the footballing world.

They won the Champions League twice in four years, being stopped by Inter and later Chelsea, both of whom resorted to parking the bus, to an extent rarely if ever seen before in a European Cup semi final.

This season is a very impressive effort from Enrique, but he's standing on Pep's shoulders, benefiting from all of his groundwork, with the icing of an even better Messi, and £100m spent on Neymar and Suarez. You might argue that their quality in the final third makes this a more effective team, but there's no comparing the influence of the manager.

Nigel "Ostrich" Pearson or Luis Enrique?

I have to say it must still be Enrique. The Champions League still isn't easy despite the incredible quality at Barcelona.

I don't know. Pearson did really well to get them out of jail and I guess thats what he was supposed to do, achieve survival. Enrique did what he was supposed to do as well and thats win lots of trophy's. I'm not entirely sure which feat was harder but I think winning lots of trophies is a little bit more difficult.

Certainly harder. But I expected Barca to very very well. The trophies they won is incredible but Leicester staying up was almost impossible.

I wouldn't say it was almost impossible. Plenty of poor teams in the league and Hull were certainly one of them.

From the position they were in they looked dead and buried but Hull couldn't buy a goal.
What PL manager would you say came close to Enriques achievements?

Mourinho is probably the closest and Pearson and Koeman too. I still think Enriques achievements this season trumps theirs though.

From the position they were in?

Pearson was in charge when they were getting in that position. Its not like he was appointed in march. Managers like martinez and rodgers show its much harder to manage these top clubs than get small teams into top leagues

                    Good point.
I feel with the team he had he managed to stop the rot and turn it around in a very difficult league. I think the losses came to quickly for them and his talents as a manager (especially motivationally) was a great achievement. They must have been so low with the shock of getting outplayed in the first instance.

Has to be Luis Enrique. He's managed to get a three man attack working where all three are good enough to have teams built around them. When you think about the egos involved, that's impressive.

Pearson did well but he just had to make his team less bad than a few others. If you can sort your defence out then staying in the Premier League isn't that hard.

Enrique and barca win everything put in front of them in style.

Ostrich did well for sure but keeping a promoted team in the epl for a season is not in the same ballpark.

For the dead zone...what are your views on this ?

As a father of a child with Down Syndrome I'm absolutely livid about this
    ....https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=cW5WmdMGCfo
Kevin Kilbane (also a farther of a child with Down Syndrome) has lodged a complaint to the FA about West Ham fans chanting this at matches, but it seems to be getting ignored.
WTF is this all about ?..Why is it being ignored ?

TBH I'm so far removed from 'real football fans' that I don't even understand the culture of chanting. Are there rules on what fans can or cannot chant? And how can those rules be enforced?

I totally understand your anger and disgust at this wakey.

I think the sad truth is that society is not well educated on intellectual disabilities and on what is and isn't acceptable in both behaviour and choice of language. I look at myself and I just had to google to ensure I was using correct terms and I'm educated middle class. Football fans tend to be the last to cotton on.

So whilst I doubt the fans had any idea how offensive they were being, only strong messages will start the education process and its up to the fa and other authorities to enforce these. It certainly should not be ignored.

Yeah, well, don't expect intelligence or decency from heads of any football association. This one time they actually should follow Blatter's example and resign, all of them.

Of course, that hardly is a people matter. The thing is, sports are not well endowed in people smart in things other than the given sport, and with the money moving there, is always going to attract a lot of corruption. Stupid and corrupt people united, aye!

True, although I doubt the penalties part. Tadic then JWP seems the obvious order.

It puts a lot more unnecessary pressure on the CBs and the midfield too, need a top DM and the right setup up to counter that, it wouldn't be a great buy for me, I think he can be a bit too silly sometimes, tying things he shouldn't and then losing possession, though can be great in an attacking sense. :/ I'd go for someone younger and a lot more balanced myself.

I think they want to keep both Pogba and Vidal now, last summer they were willing to sell one (Vidal was more likely) to keep the other. I'm sure they have their price though, neither would come cheap I'd imagine.

I think they surely cannot keep both of them, especially Pogba. They know he will go one season or another, and transfer value is so dependent on form, could be the ideal time to make a sale.
