Pre-Season

Sleeper – Theo Walcott

Our pre-season coverage continues with the introduction of our “Sleeper” series.

These articles aim to highlight those players who we expect to improve in performance over the season ahead, after a drop in Fantasy fortunes over the previous campaign.

Theo Walcott is very much the archetype of a “sleeper” Fantasy prospect.

Having picked up a serious knee injury in the FA Cup Third Round win against Tottenham in January 2014, Walcott was not a name on the lips of Fantasy managers as the 2014/15 campaign got underway, given that he was expected to miss the first few months of the season.

Walcott’s prospects were further dented by two summer recruits at the Emirates as both Alexis Sanchez and Danny Welbeck found their way to north London.

Sanchez arrived with a big reputation following an impressive World Cup performances and with proven pedigree at Barcelona; the Chilean was expected to line up either on the left or right flank. Welbeck came to Arsenal stating his desire to play as a striker, although he was often used out wide during his time at Old Trafford. With Walcott and Olivier Giroud ruled out with injury, Welbeck would be handed the first opportunity to make the central striking position his own.

The addition of these two quality players was certainly going to increase competition for places, lessening Walcott’s Fantasy appeal from the get-go.

Walcott was priced at 9.0 in Fantasy Premier League (FPL) and eventually made his comeback as a late substitute in the 3-0 victory against Burnley in Gameweek 10. He appeared off the bench a week later at Swansea, before picking up a groin strain on international duty that would rule him out for a further month.

Having been an unused substitute against Liverpool, QPR and West Ham at the tail end of December, Walcott played 30 minutes as a substitute against his former side Southampton, before making his first start of the season in the 2-0 win against Hull in the FA Cup Third Round. His first goal of the 2014/15 campaign came against Brighton in the Fourth Round of the FA Cup, while he was also on the scoresheet on his first Premier League start of the season against Aston Villa in Gameweek 23.

Walcott, however, would only make three more league appearances before Gameweek 34, with Arsene Wenger anxious to avoid rushing the attacker’s recovery from such a serious injury, while the form of the Sanchez, Giroud, Santi Cazorla, Aaron Ramsey and Mesut Ozil afforded the Frenchman the luxury of being able to ease Walcott back to full fitness.

Substitute appearances against Chelsea, Hull, Swansea, Manchester United and Sunderland would garner a single assist, before Walcott exploded on just his fourth league start of the season on the final day against West Brom. Walcott was handed a rare opportunity as the central striker against the Baggies, and duly bagged a hat-trick and maximum bonus, rewarding the 5,000+ FPL owners who had taken a punt on the now 8.2-priced midfielder. That performance persuaded Wenger to stick with Walcott for the FA Cup final against Villa, with the England man impressing once again, scoring the opening goal in a comprehensive 4-0 win.

THE PROSPECTS

Walcott ended the campaign with the best goal conversion rate among Arsenal attackers, netting 21.7% of his opportunities compared to Sanchez’s 13.2% and Giroud’s 20%. While those statistics may be slightly skewed, given Walcott only played 488 minutes last season, there is little doubt of his Fantasy potential should he steer clear of the treatment table – 14 goals and 13 assists over 32 appearances in 2012/13, leading to 194 FPL points, attest to that.

There has been some speculation regarding his future at Arsenal, with just a year to run on his current contract. Discussing the situation, Arsene Wenger seems convinced that Walcott’s future now lies up front for the Gunners, after Ramsey nailed down the role on the right over the final few months of the previous campaign:

“Theo’s gone through difficult moments. To lose a year of a career of a football player is massive. But he’s at the best age now, 1989 born. Being 26 to 32 as a striker is the best age as a striker and I wouldn’t like to miss that golden age. It’s not too late for him. I think his position will be as a striker. I have worked with him in both situations, as a striker and as a wide player. The quality of his runs is so fantastic with the pace he has, and he is a good finisher now. When he was younger, he rushed in front of goal but he has improved now. He can be transformed. He is naturally gifted and can play in this position. Olivier Giroud has different qualities: he can head a ball and he plays with his back to goal. Theo is a runner who is capable of going in behind.”

Given his end of season exploits, there’s every chance that Walcott will be on the radar of Fantasy managers during the summer. Expected to remain classified as a midfielder across the Fantasy games, a cost of around 9.0 in FPL seems likely for the Arsenal attacker – whilst the likes of Ramsey will be similarly priced, there’s no doubt that Sanchez will continue in the premium bracket after his 16-goal haul last time around.

His case to feature more regularly as the lone forward has been strengthened following his last two performances and although Welbeck is also in the mix, Wenger’s comments certainly suggest that – despite recent speculation linking the Gunners with a move for another striker – Walcott could finally be handed his preferred role up front for the Gunners over the season ahead.

Certainly, the switch to 4-1-4-1, with Francis Coquelin sitting in front of the back-four, has allowed Santi Cazorla and Mesut Ozil to dictate matters centrally further forward, and with Jack Wilshere and Alex Oxlade-Chamberlain offering alternatives to Ramsey on the right, there’s no shortage of options for Wenger should be choose to utilise Walcott exclusively up front.

Ultimately, though, his security of starts and the ability to stay healthy will determine how we assess Walcott’s prospects for the season ahead. With Sanchez potentially set to be rested for the first couple of matches (if Chile make the latter stages of the Copa America), our attentions could well be focused elsewhere in the Gunners midfield.

Pre-season should hopefully reveal more on Wenger’s intentions, though with Giroud drawing blanks in each of the final seven Gameweeks, there’s a growing belief that Walcott could approach the summer in pole position for the striker’s role. Providing he stays fit, then, such a scenario would surely make the Arsenal man one of the most popular Fantasy picks around for the new campaign.

Philippe Auclair- "Szczesny has played his last game for Arsenal."

On Cech- "He's probably the best professional I've seen in the game. Magnificent character in the dressing room, he's a born winner. I cannot speak highly enough of Petr Cech as a man and as a keeper. He would be a fantastic addition to Arsenal."

"Arsene loves Cech, which is why Mourinho is so furious at the thought of losing him to Arsenal. Cech is like De Gea in terms of he will get you 15 points a season for his goalkeeping alone. He's that good. Cech has got another 5-6 years in him. I saw him v Everton at Stamford Bridge and he was absolutely world class."

"Don't underestimate too that Cech is 11 years in London he is happy and settled. He's a real family man and I will say no more."

Completely agree on Cech being world class and an absolutely great addition to Arse-squad. You've been without a top level GK since Lehmann left, easily the worst equipped top PL team in that respect.

This just feels like one of those moments where an upgrade is so glaringly obvious, yet Arsene will find a rationalization why he should sick with Szczesny for yet another season.

I don't think he'll find a reason to stick with Szcezscny this time. He's fed up with that lad, rather plays Ospina, who, by the way, is a good international level GK, just not a top of the world one like Petr Cech.

I hope you are right!! But we've all seen how myopic AW can be when it comes to some players. He just keeps thinking he knows best even when everyone else can see he's wrong. Then that just keeps him persisting in thinking he's correct and will prove everyone wrong.

What I'm 100% sure of that it is not for Szczeszcny that Arsene turns Cech down. If he won't sign Cech, it is Ospina who he will play and they will sign a new 2nd GK. Szczeszcny is out the door in any case.

You have to wonder whether Sanchez is one of those players who can drag a club up to his standards. What's important to Arsenal is that they are not only buying good players, but they are buying winners. Ozil, Sanchez, Cech if he comes - players that have won big trophies.

For the last decade Arsenal have had teams filled with players that have never won a single trophy, never mind the World Cup/Champions League. Players like Sanchez, who see the FA Cup and 3rd as not enough, could bring the club back to a "big club mentality".

    1. Somalion
      • 14 Years
      8 years, 11 months ago

I agree. It is so important to have a few lads in the changing rooms and on the pitch with the desire to be at the top and who aren't afraid to have a go at someone for not putting in enough effort. That mentality is vital, I believe it was a massive part of SAF's final title winning season.

      1. Doolittle
        • 11 Years

Agreed, you need players who have been there before, players who know what it takes to make that shift from "good" to "the best". A player like Sanchez won't be happy with getting top 4, and everyone around will need to match that ambition.

Here's a little analysis into promoted teams defences.

A team who's just been promoted into the Premier League, who has been a solid outfit in the Championship, may not be as good in the Premier League - don't let the stats fool you.

In the 11/12 season, Reading had the most clean sheets out of the promoted sides with 20 and only registered 1 clean sheet in the first 10 games of the Premier League. Southampton registered 2 less and kept 0 clean sheets in the first 10 games. West Ham had the worst record out of the three with 17 clean sheets, but they were the most effective in the early stages of the Premier League with 4.

In the 05/06 season Reading kept the most clean sheets again out of the three promoted sides from the Championship with 22 and registered just 2 shut outs in the first 10 games. Watford only kept 12, but were the best out of the three with 3 clean sheets.

Out of the ten seasons I looked into, 6 times the strongest defence performed the best or joint best in the first 10 matches of the Premier League. Only 4 times did the worst performing promoted club in the Championship register the least amount of clean sheets in the first 10 games in the Premier League.

Of course, this all depends on fixtures, new signings/departures and managerial changes. If you want me to post all the data that I collected over 10 seasons below, then just ask.

I never trust promoted teams at the back and look at other mid table sides for rotation instead.

Newcastle may represent value at the back now that Carver is gone (also depends on who's coming in), Sunderland have Dick again this season, who did well, even better than Poyet defensively. Interesting rotation this one.

I might go for Norwich defense though, they have almost the same players they had when they racked in those clean sheets a few seasons back and I personally like Rudy, should be 4.5.

WBA defense is nailed on I think, while I may be ignoring Southampton defense due to the price and Europa League this season.

I think I'll be going for Ruddy if he's 4.5 and a WBA defender for sure.

But, out of the 30 promoted teams I looked at, 12 of those kept 3 or more clean sheets in the first 10 weeks and only 9 kept 1 or below.

I am not very optimistic on the newly promoted sides though, apart from Norwich.

Change in management for Watford though,so you never know.

Hope there was France and Spain in the U21 Euros, could have had more recognisable faces, surprised they didn't qualify anyway.

Ter-Stegen, Meyer, Volland... Jenkinson, Ward-Prowse, Kane... Sturaro... Auto-complete.

Yeah, it was pretty shocking that they disqualified themselves (pretty much auto-demolition mode on, especially for France). Would have been the two biggest favorites to win. Now it looks like Germany and England shouldn't meet too great challenges in this tournament until they play each other.

Maybe. There are some pretty impressive names there, but not too many, imo. Although you never know, really. Particularly on this level where it is a lot a question of mentality, if any team goes into a match thinking they've already won it, they won't. Sweden beat France 4-1 at home. I'm pretty sure they could beat England too, if the English are as arrogant as the French were. And then the home team (Czech republic) will always have a serious advantage in these, and I don't really know the current Serbian youth internationals, but they're usually pretty good.

Just meant, looking at the names alone, Germany and England look like seriously better than the others. Including Italy and Portugal.

Isn't Portugal in 3rd place to win?
Portugal's team is on 14 consecutive official games without a loss (12 wins, 2 draws), including a 7-4 vs the Netherlands in the playoffs.

i think it's a good stat, about what they can do

Sure, must be taken into account. And as said, you never know in these games, big surprises may happen as the youth teams are pretty vulnerable to crumble down mentally when facing difficulties.

At 22 years of age, Tomas Kalas is set for his SEVENTH loan spell away from Stamford Bridge. It’s being widely reported that the Chelsea defender will join Middlesbrough, where he spent the second half of the 2014-15 campaign, on a season-long loan deal.

And let it begin - RMU21T

Part auto select..part googling top scorers in qualification..part reading up on Denmark being 'dark hoses' of the competition

    Butland

    Kalas Chambers Schulz Buanchetti

    SOliviera Christensen Thomsen Leitner

    Hofman Berahino

Bench - Bardi, POliviera, Khalili, Larsson (in my head its Henrik in a time machine...but I know its not really)

Of those Hofman and Berahino look my main men. Christensen and Lietner are highly fancied to do well. Rest is up for grabs. Like to have Volland too but can't seem to get him in.

          Prices pretty steep for attackers.

Basically Germany and England have the best strikers and they are all pricey. I'm steering clear of Kane at 12m....especially as Berahino is favoured currently.

Too many English players. Remember who is managing the team!

Yep...they are in by virtue of knowing who they are currently...but I'll probably just go with one during these group stages. They are very attacking.

You could look at Kristoffer Olsson, good record at U21 and extremely good record at Arsenal U21.

As a Swede I can't see Larsson get many minutes if any as Guidetti and Thelin probably will start and Hrgota is first to be subbed on. So if there are any cheaper striker then him then get that one.

cheers. Already toying with a Volland/Hoffman and another strike force so have dropped him now.

why isn't Firmino being linked with the big clubs?

he isn't premier league proven so he's crap... 😉

He'll be playing for Bayern within a few years. He is top notch. Hoffenhaim would do well to keep him for one more year.

Based on nothing except Football Manager and the top scorers in qualifying, this is what I have:

    Butland
    Rugani/Schulz/Kalas
    Christensen/Battocchio/Leitner/Hojberg
    Volland/Berahino/Kadlec

A bench of people who probably aren't going to get a game.

I'd pick Hoffman ahead of Volland, Ward-Prowse ahead of Christensen. And Robin Knoche ahead of Schulz.

I can't argue with that as I have no knowledge of these players outside FM...
