Having narrowly finished second to champions Manchester City in 2013/14, Liverpool’s prospects were dealt a bitter blow last summer after 31-goal Luis Suarez was snapped up by Barcelona. With the Uruguayan gone, and Daniel Sturridge restricted to seven starts due to injuries, it was a season to forget for Brendan Rodgers’ outfit.

    There seems to be some confusion surrounding City and transfers. Their problems lie with home grown talent and they can spend if they wish, but they must get home grown players. They don't have to be English but like Fabregas who spent 3 years before his 21st birthday qualifies (although this looks to change to 18th birthday).
    City have had a break through in FFP yesterday too.

      I really should know this but is the rule that teams must have English players as well as having home grown players?

        No. Home grown is fine, they don't have to be English.
        A change in the definition of home grown player to any player, irrespective of their nationality, who has been registered with any club affiliated to The FA or Football Association of Wales (FAW) for a period of three years prior to the player’s 18th birthday (currently the definition states a home grown player has to be registered with The FA or FAW for three years before their 21st birthday).
        A reduction in the maximum number of non-home grown players permitted in a club’s first team squad of 25 from 17 to 13, phased over four years from 2016. This would have the effect of ensuring that in a squad of 25, 12 players would have to be home grown.
        The introduction of a requirement that at least two home grown players are also club trained players (a club trained player is defined as any player, irrespective of nationality, that has been registered for three years at their current club prior to their 18th birthday.

            What will happen is that clubs will need to buy 17 year old wonderkids and have a very wide scouting range to get the best starlets in the world. That way they can develop world class talent and they would qualify as home grown. Arsenal have been doing this for years.

              Saw today that FIFA have made it tougher to sign under 18 foreigners. Now, both the father and mother have to have an employment contract in the country in which the player is moving to. Previously it could just be one parent I think.

                Very interesting. I'm guessing once they turn 18 its ok? but then it becomes less than 3 full years till they are 21 so can't count as home grown.

                  Exactly, if these rules were in place 15 years ago we may not be speaking about Messi. I feel some talented youngsters may not get the development at the top European clubs that they deserve. La Masia is full of foreign players, some of which are banned from playing at the age of just 14 because Barcelona preached the previous rules(hence the transfer embargo). It's so sad really.

        hmm this is one of my big decisions for this season. mourinho guarantees clean sheets and ivan has the attacking potential. arsenal back four still not amazing - but the extra 1.5mil tempting...if anyone can keep up with ivan for points it would be a fit kos i think

    What's peoples thoughts on silva vrs sanchez for overall season points - both averaged about 6ppg last year but will it be so close this season? Probably both cost around 11 but Id like to fit in one.

      I can see Silva costing 10m and Sanchez 11m. Sanchez second half of the season wasn't great. I'll probably start with neither as Hazard and Aguero will eat 1/4 of my budget

            That always the case at the beginning of a season, is it not? Usually 3 big hitters so tough choices to start.
            I've not spent any time yet looking at fixtures so I'm not sure on my picks but Sanchez, Fab & Aguero come to mind for me.

      Silva 10.5 and Alexis 11.0 or 11.5 I think. I'd prefer Silva as things stand right now if I had to pick between the two.

          His underlying stats have always been pretty great - he just added the goals this past season. When healthy he's always a consistent and solid FPL performer and he did seem to pop up in great positions in the box this past season in general. I think he's as good a pick in midfield as any.

            I feel the key is playing Aguero up top and 3 behind him. Dzeko/Bony just clutter up the space. Aguero and Silva work great together

            Well said Walshy. I think he's definitely turned into a premium FPL mid with Sanchez and Hazard etc.

            He's involved in everything City do, and he'll always get you a few jammy assists by playing a sideways pass outside the box which Yaya rockets into the net

                YEah I see your point but I'm not the biggest fan of Sanchez. Great player, but in FPL terms, he mainly seems to get big hauls when playing through the centre, when Ozil and/or Giroud aren't playing. A lot of his massive hauls came earlier in the season when both were out and yes I know he got a few playing in his usual position, but I'm not sure that justifies the massive outlay for him, especially when you could get any others in that Arsenal midfield for 2-3m less.

        They tried it last year with Jonty begging people to to reply to RMTs. It didn't quite work. But I certainly agree there should a separate area for discussion. What didn't work was people getting their teams rated. Otherwise it was good to have discussion on here. Plus I hate rating teams of Gravless 1985

    Im bored so I thought what the hey. What are the different types of FFS member doing during the summer?

    1) The Denier. Still hasn't closed his FPL tab and refreshes it daily to see if it's back online. Logs in to FFS everyday in the slim hope there is a good discussion going and is heartbroken when its still in DZ mode.

    2) The Awakener. Like a bear after hibernation, this person has re-introduced themselves into the real world after months of isolation at the hands of FPL. Binge watching seasons of True Detective and Game of Thrones to catch up on pop culture and partying hard, he/she will have poeple wondering 'Where were you for the last 8mths?'

    3) The Nostradamus - this person is already busily planning away his/her GW8 wildcard safe in the knowledge that it will be the right time to get in Bale once he moves to Utd. He/She has picked their GW1 team multiple times already, chopping and changing with every new rumour each day.

    4) The Statistician. Stats never go away. There's still plenty to dissect from last season, form charts for new additions, tickers to be drawn up. So much to do, so little time.

    5) The Fantasy Addict - Copa America? U-21? Belgium Women's beach Volleyball tourney? If there's a fantasy game, this guy in down to play.

      2 for me. Caught up with the TV shows I been hoarding over the past few months.

      Meanwhile I realized I was really effective and productive at work during the FPL season...I continue doing work at the same pace (workload has been more or less the same) and find myself having much more free time without FPL

    Morning all, quick question. Has anyone looked at 3 way rotation for defenders yet?

    Very tempted this year for

    6.0/5.0 /4.5 (4.5/ 4.0)

    Would play the 6.0 and the 5.0 every week and 1/3 of the others.

    I usually get two lots of 4.5's who rotate but end up unhappy with defense and make loads of early changes to sort it. An ARS/CH for 6.0 and SOT/WBA for 5.0 would prob just leave them every week

    I did check articles and hot topics first. Thanks

      Yup you dont wanna use many transfers at the back in the beginning, so atleast one solid 6.0 defender is nice 🙂

    Atletico to buy Porto's Martinez

    Atletico Madrid have agreed to buy Colombia striker Jackson Martinez from Porto, the player's agent was quoted as saying in Spanish sports daily As on Tuesday.

    "It was sealed today," the agent, Luiz Henrique Pompeo, told the newspaper, adding that AC Milan were also chasing the 28-year-old forward.

    "It (Atletico) is a very big club which has had a lot of success in its league and in Europe and Jackson is going there full of desire to do great things," Pompeo added.

    Martinez signed a contract with Porto until the end of the 2016-17 season and As said Atletico had agreed to pay his buyout clause worth 35 million euros ($39.1 million).
