Swansea confirmed their second signing of the summer window on June 19, with St Etienne left-back Franck Tabanou joining on a three-year deal. The former France U21 international revealed that a meeting with manager Garry Monk convinced him to join up at the Liberty:

“I was aware of Swansea’s interest in me for a while, but unfortunately it didn’t happen back in January. But I’ve been watching them closely ever since and I like the way they play the game; their whole philosophy on football. I was particularly impressed with the manager because he knew everything about me. I was also touched by the fact that he said I was a top signing for Swansea. I am keen to show I am able to perform in the Premier League – the best league in the world:

Monk, meanwhile, talked up the new boy’s potential in an interview with the Swans official website earlier this week:

“It’s an excellent signing that I’m looking forward to working with individually and as part of the group. He is exactly the type of player we are looking for. He’s young, talented and looking to make the next step up in his career. He has the right attributes to fit in here and increase the competition and quality in the squad. He’s come from a good club and is an exciting talent that I’m sure the supporters will enjoy watching.”

The History

Born in the suburbs of Paris, Tabanou spent eight years at a handful of local youth academies before joining Toulouse in 2006. He played for their U18 outfit during his first season at the Ligue 2 club, earning a spot in the reserve team for the 2007/08 campaign.

Impressed by Tabanou’s performances for the second string during the 2008/09 season, manager Alain Casanova handed him five senior appearances at the back-end of the campaign, subsequently leading to his first professional contract. The versatile defender cemented a starting berth as a left midfielder in the following season, recording four goals and one assist across 33 league outings.

It wasn’t until the 2010/11 season that Tabanou began to regularly start at the left-back position – a move engendered by Toulouse’s first choice succumbing to multiple injuries. Tabanou featured in both roles throughout his four full seasons at the French club, finishing his spell with 16 goals and 19 assists in 153 appearances. Saint-Etienne then came calling, tying him down to a contract worth in the region of £3.5 million.

Tabanou was initially fielded on the left flank at Saint-Etienne but shifted back into the left-back slot following the departure of Dynamo Kiev loanee Benoit Trémoulinas in the summer of 2014. It was a successful nine and a half months for the Frenchman, who racked up the second-highest number of assists (five) among the squad and was a pivotal component of a rearguard that conceded just 30 goals – only Monaco (26) were breached on fewer occasions.

On the international front, Tabanou is yet to earn a senior cap for France, having tallied 12 appearances for the U21s.

The Prospects

The arrival of Tabanou finally offers competition to incumbent left-back, Neil Taylor, considering that Swansea have lacked depth in that position since Ben Davies made the switch to Tottenham Hotspur last summer. Although the Welsh international established himself as a mainstay in Garry Monk’s side – starting all but four league fixtures last term – the Swans boss may now favour Tabanou’s superior offensive threat.

In his two seasons as a regular starter at the Liberty, Taylor tallied a combined zero goals and four assists, while Tabanou managed one goal and five assists last time out. From a creative standpoint, Swansea’s latest recruit fashioned more key passes (25) than Taylor (22) last season despite playing 543 fewer league minutes – his average of 104.6 minutes per chance created in 2014/15 is sandwiched between Branislav Ivanovic (100.2) and Pablo Zabaleta (105). Furthermore, Tabanou also posed a far greater goal threat than Taylor, firing off 22 shots on goal to his new team-mate’s four.

If Tabanou can forge a way into the starting line-up ahead of Taylor, he could certainly be one to consider, with Monk’s regulars likely to come in around the 5.0 mark in Fantasy Premier League (FPL). Given that Lukasz Fabianksi finished top for goalkeepers and ahead of the Swansea backline options with 151 points in 2014/15, it remains to be seen whether any of the Pole’s defensive team-mates can rival him as an option. Tabanou’s penchant for driving into advanced positions could pique the interest of Fantasy managers, however. Furthermore, as revealed by the YouTube highlights below, the new boy is a skilled free-kick practitioner, whose eye for a long-range strike could see Swansea’s current set-piece specialist, Gylfi Sigurdsson, shared dead-ball duties on occasions.

Nonetheless, Swansea’s unforgiving start to the 2015/16 campaign somewhat limits the appeal of their backline during the early stages. A visit to Chelsea in Gameweek 1 looks highly unlikely to harvest a clean sheet, while home ties against Everton and Manchester United in their first six match-ups (che, NEW, sun, MUN, wat, EVE) should provide stiff tests of a resilient rearguard that racked up 13 shut-outs in the season gone by.

Fantasy Football Scout daily hot topic

New recruit success stories and failures

There seems to be a raft of new recruits coming into the Premier League for the 2015/16, many of whom will be unknown to all except hardened Football Manager game players.

Who have been the best unknown quantities for your Fantasy teams?

Who have been the biggest flops?

Michu, Sanchez and Costa are the obvious successes.

The obvious failure? Well, I don't want to scare everyone on here, but it begins with a B, ends in I, and has "osell" in the middle.

Ahh I completely ignored the unknown quantities bit, I was just thinking of players new to the PL. I can't think of many real successes outside of Michu. Roscola's Cisse shour is a good one.

Mane wasn't well known and Austria's league is garbage but he was pretty good (had sold him on before his hattrick though)

Surely Michu is going to be the main answer here! I even knew him from his brief Vallecano spell, and opted for Graham over him.

I missed his start of season run, then finally got him for a spell in the middle, captained him on debut, and he went off injured v Villa.

Bojan has to be considered a big flop too, despite his mid-season form. He had a great starting price last year, with a good reputation, OK pre-season, and great fixtures. Then he gets subbed, dropped, plummeted in value, game over.

Michu was amazing. I benched him for his debut 18 pointer but thankfully Sylvain Marveaux didn't play 😆

I got Papiss Cisse in as soon as he signed, having read a lot about him. Sounds prophetic now but it was about 4-6 weeks before he actually started scoring.

The less said about my ridiculous love affair with Lewis Holtby, the better.

Atletico Madrid midfielder Arda Turan closing in on Premier League move, confirms agent

"His intention is to leave Spain this summer," Turan's agent Ahmet Bulut told Spanish sports newspaper AS.

"His will is to leave and to play in the Premier League, that is the path he would like to take to continue his career."

"We are currently in talks with three teams but I cannot reveal the names of the clubs,” he said.

"However, I can tell you that they are the best in England and in European football."

"It's true that Milan and PSG are two of the six teams that are interested in him," Bulut said.

"But the Italian team is not among our options because they will not play in the Champions League next season.

"PSG is a possibility although Arda always has the desire to play in England."

    ---

who are interested in signing him? or his agent trying to get Arda a new improved contract?

      Hmm... could be the latter.

Half of this was posted before and we wondered what are the English clubs at top of European football, but okay, PSG takes care of that part, so the English club need not be Chelsea/Arsenal. If I was PSG chairman, I would drop this interest now if there ever was any: if the player doesn't want to come, why to sign? He's a very good player though. It's funny they name the non-English clubs but can't name the English ones. Are they so top? Maybe they're Palace, Villa and Swans. 😆 But seriously, the Milan comment suggests that if there's truth in this, they are CL clubs. If I was a PL manager/chairman, I would be interested in signing him. City could use that sort of player, in fact, I call it here that City is one of the clubs interested and even the one who will buy him if they manage to sell some attackers or won't get Sterling.

Earlier this year Wenger spoke about the raw/street talent/tenacity South American players like Suarez and Sanchez had which European players had coached out of them. How do you strike the balance with coaching kids through to late teens? Coaching is obviously important but you don't want to create a sideways pass expert that doesn't take any risks

It depends when they do it. If they're still developing then it gives you money to buy a couple of prospects. If they do it once they're one of the best in the world it's heart breaking. I once had to sell a striker for 70m only to buy him back the next season for 40m plus another striker work 40m

I have a few unsettled players in my current Preston game, generally players now around 20/21. My 2 best wonderkids (Daniele Rugani and Agustin Allione) are happy to stay, despite attention from huge clubs. I do love those loyal stars. I picked them up for about £200k each, and I know from a previous save that they both become world class. 2nd in the Championship with 5 or so games to go, they'll all settle down if we're promoted.

I have been known, in a state of FM obsession while I was 17/18, to force players to play with the reserves when they complain. I remember getting promoted with Darren Bent in the side, who had been asking for a transfer all season. When we were promoted he apologised and settled down. I decided to teach him a lesson by giving him a 5 year contract, before making him train with the U18s and refusing to let him leave.

It was around that point that I realised I might need help.

Oh I see what you mean. The regens are my favourite! Then you know nothing about the players, it's like starting a whole new football world.

Big club always got some wonderkid regens up their sleeve. Not fancy that.

I usually played FM in spans of 10 - 15 years. Figure the likes of 18 ,19 years old now (Rugani, Cerri etc) still will be available at that time.

But you were right in saying "a whole new football world", never thought of it that way!

Yeah, my best ever players have been regens. Had a left winger (Nuno Lopes, since you asked) in FM11 who was 20 on pretty much every attacking stat. Scored about 30 goals a season from the wing, averaged around a 9 rating.

                        So many memories...

Ha i cant remember the names of my better ones but i had a striker for Pompey once who was called something like 'Billy Smith'. 20 in all the attacking attributes, 20 for pace and acceleration and up there for physicality too.

Didn't have a mugshot for him, but imagined him to be a skin-head, proper English lad, banging the goals in and then getting up to all sorts off the pitch.

One thing I don't like from these regens, they don't really need extensive training - just give them playing time and they will developed accordingly. Not like usual youngster.

Dominic Berardi is co-owned by Juventus and Sassuolo.

Any idea how that works? He has not played a single minute for Juventus since he signed, and managed a minimum of 10 goals in each of the three last seasons.

Not sure where he fits in a 3-5-2 or a 4-4-2 anyway...

Both clubs make a blind bid to the Italian FA and whoever bids highest gets full rights to the player. Simple as that. Gladly, the Italians are putting a stop to it now I think.

Juve and Sassuolo have a great relationship it will never go to the envelopes, actually they are already reporting that Juve bought the other half and will loan him back to Sassuolo for next season. If teams don't find an agreement before the set date it goes to envelopes.

From FM experience, Italian clubs seem to have a system where both can pay to have a stake in the player and then one club takes him for a set period of time. At the end of that time, offers will be made by one or both clubs to own him outright.

Doolittle has played FM more recently than I, so will have a better memory of these cases.

      1. Doolittle
        • 13 Years

Yeah, I think one of the clubs can pay a set fee to take him 100%. I never tended to go Italian clubs on FM so it's not something I've come across too much, but I think to buy them you had to bid to each club separately?

Yeah anyone from outside those two clubs would need to table two bids. Crazy system, not surprised if Parm is right that they're getting rid of it.

Just read this on Sky relating to Chelsea's area for improvement. Could someone please explain the last sentence, I in particular find this of some concern.

    Striker

It is a near-certainty to see at least one new striking addition. Didier Drogba has made his second emotional exit from the club, but this time for good, while Loic Remy looks set to seek a move away in order to secure himself more regular first-team action.

Diego Costa’s combustible style and long-standing hamstring injury worries mean that reinforcements simply must be added. There is only so much horse placenta can cover up.

Horse placenta has been used as a treatment for hammy injuries. I know Barca players had been using it, although I think there were concerns over the validity of the treatment.

'' With the deadline to resolve co ownerships set for Thursday, Juventus and Sassuolo found an agreement on Berardi. The two clubs co owned the talented striker, but now the Bianconeri have bought out Sassuolo and fully own the player. Berardi will however stay at Sassuolo on loan next season so he can keep developing and maturing. ''

I think Firmino if priced reasonably. Cech at Arsenal if 5.5? Milner as a cheap 4th/5th. Is this new Swansea LB going to be potentially OOP on the left flank?

Bayern Munich will use Manchester United's interest in Bastian Schweinsteiger to try to sign forward Angel Di Maria, reports Bild.

The Bavarians' head coach Pep Guardiola is said to be a huge admirer of Di Maria and is prepared to use his midfielder, as well as funds, to lure the Argentina international to the Allianz Arena this summer.

If I were him, I'd be wanting at least one more season to prove myself. I wouldn't want last season to be the definition of me in the fans of an entire league.

A couple of pre-seasons ago I showed that the most popular keeper rotation pairing of the season gone performed worse than playing one of them every week.

I think it was Begovic and someone else. Possibly Jussi.

It might have been just an anomaly of that season though.

Probably just an outlier as you say but how many rotations have you used personally that have had some degree of success? I must say that i've barely had any successful pairings yet still go back to it every year.

I think it was fair to expect you'd play your keeper away to Norwich over the one home to Chelsea.

I didn't think anyone would actually choose the one at home in that situation.

I think Doos came at it from a different angle, one that my post wasn't talking about.

I think he saw it through the lens of some kind of academic evaluation of team defences. He wasn't really thinking about it as a pragmatic exercise in FPL strategy.

Idea for a community article: what has happened to Pochettino's defensive game?

At Southampton, Pochettino got a lot of credit for organising a newly promoted side into a strong defensive unit without just parking the bus. They were the Fantasy darlings for their cheap defence.

So when Spurs poached him last season, many people understandably assumed that he would do a similar defensive job for them. But that just hasn't happened. It's easy to see from the stats that isn't just an unfortunate anomaly - they conceded far too many chances and shots throughout the season. What happened?

This seems like a job for an insightful reader of the game, not a blind stats-jockey like myself. Any takers?

Vertonghen was very highly rated until last season. Obviously personnel do make a big difference but I can't help feeling that there must be something strategic going on.

Firstly, Spurs don't have the midfielders required to protect the defence. Having Bentaleb and Mason as starting central midfielders for a top 4 aspiring team is a joke. Wanyama and Schneiderlin are twice the players. Spurs really need to strengthen in that area. It's vital to the overall defensive structure.

Bentaleb and Mason could really develop this season-it's the DEF that's been poor. They had no idea as to how to play a high pressing under Villas-Boas and that's the way Poch likes to play-DEF were rubbish last season but he's finally started signing some reasonable defenders and offloading the deadwood of Soldado&Adebayor in the squad so could change this time round.

Southampton had a season ticker that we rarely see for that season...it ran like this (from memory, I'm sure one of the scouts could dig it out)

      GW1-10 Easiest fixtures by far
      GW11-21 Hardest fixtures by far
      GW22 - 31. Easiest fixtures by far
      GW32 - 38 Hardest fixtures

It was a very odd situation and their CS's spread reflected it.

      1. Dr Dream
        • 13 Years

And worth remembering that they also had the easiest fixtures for the first ten games last season as well.

Fair enough. So you're saying Pochettino was over-rated and simply rode kind fixtures to a good reputation?

        1. Dr Dream
          • 13 Years
          10 years, 5 months ago

No. He was a good manager who put in place a good defence to take advantage of the situation. But as always with defences a sustained run of easier fixtures helps a lot.

Where did I say he was over rated?..or that he simply rode kind fixtures?...I was just adding some facts.

Sorry, I wasn't intending to be combative. It was a genuine, neutral question 🙂

I am acutely aware that my bigger-picture reading of the game is weak so I value the opinion of anyone who's better at it than me. I would put you high up in that bracket, Wakey, so if you had said he was over-rated, I would have given that serious credence 🙂
