Mauricio Pochettino’s quest to shore up Tottenham’s leaky defence continued apace last week with the capture of Burnley right-back Kieran Trippier on a five-year deal.

The former Clarets defender – who carded the third-highest Fantasy Premier League score (118 points) among his team-mates last term – lauded the quality of Spurs’ squad, insisting he’ll do his utmost to forge a route into their starting XI:

“When I first heard that the club was interested I didn’t have to think twice because it’s such a big club and now I just can’t wait to get started. I’m very keen to perform in training every single day, do the best I can and hopefully get the nod from the gaffer. Whenever I get a chance, I want to do well for the other players, the staff and, of course, the fans. The squad here is unbelievable, there’s so much quality in the team and I’m really looking forward to starting work in pre-season and being a part of that. I’ll take every opportunity I get with both hands and hopefully play my part for everyone at the club.”

The History

The Bury-born Trippier learned his trade as part of Manchester City’s youth set-up from the age of nine. Having captained the Sky Blues’ triumphant reserve side in the 2007/08 FA Youth Cup, the rampaging right-back penned his first professional contract.

Trippier joined Championship outfit Barnsley on a one-month loan deal from February 2010 but only managed three appearances due to injury. The former England U21 international made the switch back to the South Yorkshire club the following summer, originally joining on a six-month loan deal that was extended to encompass the full campaign. Trippier recorded 41 appearances in all competitions throughout 2010/11, notching two goals and six assists, and claiming the Young Player of the Season award.

Burnley then sought to recruit Trippier on a season-long loan deal as a replacement for their outgoing right-back Tyrone Mears, before signing him permanently during the January transfer window. Trippier amassed four goals and six assists in 50 appearances in all competitions, and was named Burnley’s Player of the Year.

In the 2012/13 campaign, Trippier – who was honoured in the Championship Team of the Year – missed just one league clash (due to suspension) and tallied a hugely impressive 12 assists in 45 outings. The next season harvested a similarly head-turning attacking output, as Trippier chalked up two goals and 14 assists across 46 outings en route to Burnley’s promotion and another spot in the Championship Team of the Year.

During Burnley’s one season in the top-flight last term, Trippier played all but five minutes of his side’s 38 league fixtures, notching four assists in the process – only six defenders registered more.

The Prospects

In light of Kyle Walker’s ongoing injury issues (he missed 23 matches last season and clocked only 2300 minutes in the 2013/14 campaign) and DeAndre Yedlin’s inexperience, it’s no surprise that Spurs felt obliged to bolster their right-back options. Certainly, the fact that Trippier sat out just six league matches in the past four seasons must have factored into their transfer committee’s thinking as Pochettino hunted for a reliable option.

From a Fantasy perspective, Trippier’s exceptional creative output should render him a real prospect in Spurs’ rearguard if he can nail down a starting berth and the North London club can improve on a paltry haul of nine clean sheets. Astonishingly, Trippier attempted 341 crosses last term and executed 42 more successful crosses than the next best defender Leighton Baines (91 to 49), underlining his proclivity for hugging the touchline. Incidentally, Baines was the only defender to fashion more key passes (70) than Trippier (63), who outclassed the much-vaunted Branislav Ivanovic (36) in this regard.

Considering that Burnley were the lowest-scoring team last season with 28 goals, there’s certainly scope for Trippier to improve on his four assists. In fact, the Lilywhites’ latest recruit tallied more than double the volume of successful crosses than Tottenham’s full roster of defenders (43) last season, while he came close to trumping their collective key pass output (73), too. With regards to his direct competitors, Trippier’s average of 57 minutes per key pass was more than twice as quick as Walker’s 125.4 and far superior to Danny Rose, whose average of 92.2 was the most impressive of any Spurs defender.

Tottenham’s poor defensive record last season (only four sides were breached on more occasions) should ensure that their rearguard starters are pitched at similar price points next term, with a ceiling of 5.5 expected. Given that Jan Vertonghen has managed just one goal and an assist in the last two seasons, Trippier looks poised to challenge Rose as the primary route into Spurs’ rearguard.

Fantasy managers might elect to hold fire in the early stages of next season, though, given that Pochettino’s troops open with a trip to Old Trafford and then face tough match-ups against Stoke City, Everton and Manchester City in their subsequent six fixtures (STO, lei, EVE, sun, CRY, MCI).

As an aside, the arrival of Trippier and 22-year-old Austrian centre-back Kevin Wimmer places uncertainty over Eric Dier’s prospects next season. The versatile defender – who bagged two goals and three assists last term – enjoyed a security of starts in the second half of 2014/15, yet was primarily tasked with covering at right-back. Elsewhere, Tottenham’s recent business has pushed former MLS starlet Yedlin further down the pecking order, with some reports suggesting that he’s poised for a loan switch to another Premier League outfit. If priced below 5.0, Yedlin would certainly pique our interest by virtue of his attacking instincts, with the Canaries opening schedule also boosting his appeal should he find his way to Carrow Road.

I don't know what's wrong with him. He seems totally incapable of handling the pressure of being a Pool keeper.

Every time I watch him he's flapping at crosses, kicking balls out of play, on top of some shocking errors leading to goals.

The problem I find with Mignolet is that at Sunderland the defensive line was very deep, thus giving him very little of the box to command and emphasizing his shot stopping.

Liverpool's defense pushes up quite a bit more though and I'm not sure Mignolet has adjusted fully to this.

very interesting. great signings so far and if Rodgers has more control maybe a lot of misplaced anger towards him for what happened last season.

He did mess around with formation and play people of out of position but not getting the players you want and told to get the same results with sub par players....

Really interesting to see what happens to us this season with players BR had more of a say in

I can't watch it in work but I know the sketch. I do bite my tongue when I hear people mispronounce words (I know how annoying it is if I correct them), but it does take a lot of effort to not say something.

Think of it this way. If people are pronouncing things wrongly, it is probably because they have learnt words from reading, rather than hearing other people say it. Their efforts are probably more laudable than those who pronounce things correctly. 😀

That's sometimes true, especially for people who don't have English as a first language, but some of them can't be attributed to that (e.g. pacific instead of specific). A friend of mine is really bad for it; she pronounces words in a way that I've never heard. I've been for a meal where she's asked for see-a-batta (ciabatta) and mozzarella with a z sound instead of ts. She still mispronounces words after being corrected!

Hyperbolic is one of my favourite words. The thing is that there isn't another word that means exactly what hyperbolic means, so it is necessary to use it at times. I use certain words because, well, they are required to express my point, not to show off.

A lot of my friends also did English degrees so we're all equally irritating.

@Lucy No apology necessary, and thanks for the contribution. Yes i'm hoping, as you say, that a few people will ask her about our recent Spa weekend (got to do something while there's no football), and it might make her realise what she's losing. Also she'll be in Spain. As i'm half-Spanish, we've had a few tapas meals in our time so that should bring back some memories too.

She really appreciated me going down there, and the card brought a few tears to her eye. I could tell she was close a couple of times to going with her heart but her head shook her out of it. A little more time apart might make her head catch up.

Split up with my girlfriend on Sunday evening. Hadn't spoken to her in any form until last night, when i decided to take the plunge and head down to see her with a bouquet of flowers and a card to declare that i wanted to keep things going.

After initially being rebuffed, we spoke for 2/3 hours but didn't quite get back to where i want us to be - despite thinking i may have convinced her a couple of times. She's away on a long weekend in Spain now, so i'm hoping i've given her something to think about.

Dimitri Payet's agent explains the situation with the West Ham's bid:

the clubs have agreed on a fee of £12M (not sure of details), and West Ham and Payet have agreed the terms of the contract of 5-6 years, but Payet is waiting as he doesn't want the transfer. Here:

    http://www.sports.fr/football/transferts/articles/om-payet-aimerait-prolonger-1268560/

He says that Payet wants to prolong his contract with Marseille, where he is happy with the club, the team and especially the manager. Marseille cannot match the salary that West Ham offers, but Payet would only sign for West Ham "as an extreme solution" if Marseille doesn't offer any improvement to his current contract. Marseille is not pushing him out, but if they don't offer anything, that's pretty much the same.

This reminds us of Valbuena's transfer to Moscow last season, with exception that Valbuena was looking for a transfer, whereas Payet definitely wants to stay. I have to sympathise with Bielsa, who sees another player sold against his will. I remember it was talked that he wants absolute control of club's affairs when he went to Marseille, but willy nilly, he's definitely the manager who has the least power on the club in all top clubs.

If he joins West Ham, talent wise he should be very exciting prospect for FPL, but I'm always a bit suspicious when a player moves to a new club against his will and in this case in particular. Will he be mentally there? He has a history of being a rather moody personality and is definitely not the most professional type there is.

Yeah, doesn't sound too good. In fact, having read the chairman's words on it, I'm inclined to think that this transfer will not go through. They'll give him a 3 years prolongation to his contract and raise his salary and that's the end of the story.

Oh, and here, Marseille Chairman Labrune explains the situation for his part:

      http://www.lequipe.fr/Football/Actualites/L-om-n-a-absolument-pas-l-intention-de-vendre-payet/569185

They have NO intention to sell Payet, but they ask the player to either take this transfer deal so they can gather money, or wait until mid July to see his contract renewed then. They also signal that they cannot match West Ham's contract offer: 6 years, €5M/year.

This may sound strange, but I'd guess the reason why they won't renew his contract before July, and why they want to sell a player before it, is the financial control of clubs in France, that forces the clubs to have a positive balance at end of June or they risk sanctions such as a transfer ban, a salary cap, or even relegation to a lower division (which has been enforced several times already). The transfer ban and salary cap can be upheld for over a season regardless of changes in situation.

Are Marseille really cash-strapped? I cannot find one reason why this transfer should feel logical.

I think it's an FFP related issue, a french finance thing? They need funds or could face deductions or some other kind of repercussions. At least I'm pretty sure that's what I read this morning.

        1. Camp No No
          • 12 Years

It's the French finance control, DNCG, that forces them, not FFP. I think they're fine in FFP terms, but the French have additional, stricter and somewhat different controls. Basically, clubs are not allowed to be indebted, and should have a positive balance, or they will be sanctioned with 1) a salary cap; 2) a prohibition of signing new players or renewing contracts upwards; 3) a relegation to a lower division. These are not just formal threats, they have been imposed on clubs many times already, a good few clubs have been destroyed with these sanctions.

Yeah sorry, I didn't know what to call the french finance control, shouldn't have put in the FFP initials when I knew it wasn't that - I was just trying to allude to it being about financial regulations.

3 numbers on transfer fee: £12M, £14M and £15M. I actually doubt the first number, as Marseille explicitly refused that offer 3-4 days ago. Probably one of the latter two is the correct one. I don't think that really makes a big difference to West Ham with PL's current TV deal with Sky. For Marseille, that's a huge difference, however.

      Here's OM chairman's full communication:

      https://www.om.net/actualites/180697/le-point-sur-lavenir-de-dimitri-payet

Sounds like the player and his agent are trying to get a salary rise, but we'll see. In any event, the club gives the impression that Payet's agent had negotiated a contract with West Ham before they even let the club know. So, if there's more in this than just contract negotiations with Marseille, then at least it seems like the player is not pushed to join West Ham but could actually willingly move there. His agent explains the situation a bit differently however, and the player himself is on holidays at Mauritius.

To be honest, I'm actually pretty neutral about McClaren, gave that reply to you just for the laughs. I mean, why did you ask if you didn't like the answer? 😀

Although I seriously do not think that McClaren was a particularly good manager either.

Only if he has substantial gametime, which I am very optimistic about, this season. Needs to stay fit first.

The position in question is the RM one. Wenger sometimes does not want to play someone like Walcott, because he hardly tracks back. And playing someone like Ramsey mean they drift in too much, and the crossing is hardly good. A solution to this could be the CM-cum-RM qualities of Oxlade-Chamberlain, preseason will tell us something.

With a pre-season of set piece work, he could really get amongst the goals again. Add that to some more Leicester clean sheets and he could be decent.

If Rooney comes at 9.5 or 10, would you get him? Utd have decent opening fixtures. If RVP leaves, he will be on penalties. However, you'd expect him to lose all corner and free kicks to Depay.

I think top scorer is a bit of a stretch. Rooney isn't a great goal scorer. He is a 15-20 goals a season player. The only season he seemed to be a 30 goals striker is 2010. He is nowhere near Costa or Aguero. He doesn't play in the box enough.

Also I expect Utd to buy a world class striker since Falcao and probably RVP are leaving. Rooney will be the provider rather than the goal scorer.

If he is below 10m he is certainly on my watchlist. Even at £10m he could be gold if RVP gets the boot. It will be tough to choose him over Aguero/Costa in the beginning though imo.

True, it would result in a weak midfield if we had both Aguero and Rooney. Although if Rooney comes in at 9-9.5 we could see a frontline of Aguero, rooney, 5.5!

I'd suspect Lambert back to the Championship and Borini abroad after he burnt his bridges with Sunderland. But Balotelli, I can't see him being shifted easily.

I'd buy Balotelli, for a very low price but I'd risk in on the chance he does anything good because you'll look like a genius for the week after than thing happens.

Would you really want to be relying on that? That's like saying you don't need a central midfielder, you just need a fit Diaby.

Or what I mean might be that Sturridge, indeed, is injury prone, but in Diaby's case 'injury prone' is no longer the word for it. Rather he just is _injured_ and is not prone to be fit ever.

If he sticks with 3-4-1-2 formation, its already looking much better with a few alternatives in each position

      Can - Skrtel - Sakho

      Clyne - Milner - Henderson - Moreno

      Coutinho

      Firmino - Sturridge

we can use a couple of systems, I wonder whether Milner was given reassurances about playing centrally.

            ---Clyne---Skrtel--Sakho--Moreno--

            ----------------Can------------------

            -----Milner----------Henderson--

            -----------Coutinho--------------

            -------Firmino-------------

            ---------------Sturridge/New striker---

yeh, that formation is quite flexible in action tho, easily pans out like

          Clyne - Skrtel - Sakho - Moreno

          Milner - Can - Henderson

          Coutinho - Sturridge - Firmino

          with the same players

Reports - Manchester United ready £28m bid for Atletico Madrid star

Manchester United are ready to blow AC Milan out of the race for Arda Turan by offering Atletico Madrid £28m for the midfielder.

Turan is the latest star to be added to the Dutchman's list of targets, with several clubs across Europe also eyeing up the Turkey international.

But, according to Gazzetta dello Sport, United are ready to beat any competition to the 28-year-old's signature by offering Atletico £28m for his services.

DJ Shadow's 'Endtroducing' is one of my favs too. Very underestimated, so I'll stick with more underestimated:
      -Talking Heads 'Fear of Music'
-Echo & The Bunnymen 'Heaven Up here'
      -David Sylvian 'Gone to Earth'
      -The The 'Dusk'

My reply to this had been marked for review, not sure why, but 3 of those are fantastic choices (not heard Gone to Earth). Remain in Light just pips Fear of Music for me, but both are up there, Heaven Up Here (and Crocodiles) are criminally underrated, and The The are marvellous.

Clapton and bb riding with the king

Remy Cabella could join Marseille on loan this season - according to the French media.

Marseille are set to lose Dimitri Payet to West Ham and Cabella could fill the void left by the French international.

Interesting. Good move for them, but makes me doubt he has any future at Newcastle, and personally I would like to see him in FPL with a new lower price tag.

What kills the Liverpool prospects even more is that most of them will be unavailable for week 1 atleast.

*Coutinho and Firmino for Brazil at Copa.
    *Ings and Ilori at U21.
    *Sterling issue unresolved.
    *Sturridge still unavailable.

If anyone really wants to get somebody, I can only see Henderson as an option.

Ings will be fine as England are already out of U21 but don't he will be starting anyway.

most of the predicted line ups don't have Sterling in them as the presumption is City will cave and offer 50m

fair point on the rest though.

if for some reason Can is listed as a defender he will be straight in my team. Hendo could be good depending on how he is priced and if he has pens.

Someone like Ibe could good if they are priced low. He has a lot of potential and might start the season
