Earlier this week, Southampton announced the signing of Dutch goalkeeper Maarten Stekelenburg on a season-long loan deal from Fulham.

Having managed just one appearance during a temporary stint at Monaco last term, the 32-year-old shot-stopper is looking to muscle his way into the Saints’ starting lineup, in light of last season’s injury to first choice keeper, Frazer Forster:

“I’m very pleased that I’ve joined. It’s a big, nice club that will play European football – and I can play. Last year I didn’t play a lot, so it’s an opportunity for me. I’m grateful. The last two years weren’t the best of my career. As they say in England: the best is yet to come.”

The History

Stekelenburg trained at the youth academies of Zandvoort ’75 and VV Schoten, before teaming up with Ajax at the age of 15. He eventually broke into the first team in February 2002 and went on to record eight further Eredivisie appearances that season. Stekelenburg assumed the role of back-up for the next two campaigns, being handed 22 league outings.

In his first two terms as Ajax’s number one shot-stopper, the club secured back-to-back KNVB Cup trophies, while the 2007/08 season saw Stekelenburg named as Ajax’s Player of the Year. The Haarlem-born keeper played a bit-part role in 2008/09 due to injury but swiftly reclaimed his starting berth after rehabilitation. Stekelenburg scooped Ajax’s Player of the Year for a second time in the wake of the Dutch giants’ title-winning 2010/11 campaign.

Roma then came calling in the summer of 2011, snapping up the stopper in a €6 million deal. The first Dutch player to sign for the Serie A stalwarts, Stekelenburg managed 29 league appearances in his debut season but tallied just 19 starts in the 2012/13 campaign, prompting a switch to Fulham in June 2013.

Stekelenburg played under Rene Meulensteen but was cast into the shadows following the appointment of Felix Magath, with the German boss preferring David Stockdale between the sticks. As a result, the 6ft 6in keeper moved on loan to Monaco for the 2014/15 season, where he played second fiddle to their incumbent number one, Danijel Subašić, chalking up just eight appearances that included just a single Ligue 1 outing.

In the wake of Edwin van der Sar’s retirement, Stekelenburg established himself as the first-choice Netherlands keeper, notching 54 appearances between 2004 and 2012. He’s since fallen out of favour on the international scene, with a lack of playing time precluding a return to Oranje.

The Prospects

With three Southampton defenders (Nathaniel Clyne, Ryan Bertrand and Jose Fonte) among the top-six scoring defenders after the club racked up 15 clean sheets last term, it’s safe to assume that the Saints’ rearguard starters are due a price hike. As such, the keeper situation could present the most valuable route into their backline.

With some reports suggesting Fraser Forster could be sidelined for the majority of the upcoming season, Kelvin Davis, Paulo Gazzaniga and Stekelenburg will be tussling for that number one berth. Certainly, the latter’s recruitment would suggest that Ronald Koeman wasn’t satisfied with his options in the squad – a notion reinforced by the fact that Southampton recorded just one clean sheet in eight fixtures following Forster’s injury.

Perhaps crucially, it’s worth noting that Koeman shares history with Stekelenburg – having handed the keeper his debut at Ajax – so it’s unlikely the Fulham man would have made the switch without assurances of pitch time. Southampton’s pre-season campaign – which kicks off on July 8 and includes a couple of Europa League qualifying fixtures – will hopefully give a clear indication as to who he favours in Forster’s absence.

With Portuguese right-back Cedric Soares already on the books, and Clyne imminently set to join former loanee Toby Alderweireld through the exit door, Southampton’s defence could be set for major restructuring for the second successive season. However, the Saints coped admirably with the loss of Luke Shaw, Calum Chambers and Dejan Lovren last summer, so there’s every chance they could retain their defensive diligence under Koeman’s considered approach.

Given their favourable opening quintet of fixtures (new, EVE, wat, NOR, wba), Southampton defensive coverage looks like a good bet in the early stages. Aside from the two match-ups against newly promoted outfits, the Saints face off against three sides that they shut out at least once in the previous campaign, heightening their defensive points potential from the offset.

Historically they seem to have completely ignored the striker position. Some of the best players in the world in history (Eusebio, Figo, CR, Ruio Costa etc) but only Pauleta, Helder Postiga, Huge Almeida to play ahead of them. Crazy times!

Yeh, young player, new to the league, hard to predict how a player from Holland will do. LvG has even said it will take time.

I'm not sure whether they'll get better, prior to investment at least. LvG has still failed to convince me, and now they have CL football, and you'd expect them to get further in domestic cups as well.

                  Nice choice!

Tom has control of what he's wearing, though we have broadly agreed on light-medium grey suits. The ladies are in a pretty shade of cornflower blue so it should all look nice and summery together.

The music selection is a joint project. And the first dance has changed about 4 times in the last month... So not going well 😀

We do keep coming back to this though:

I don't know the song and can't listen in work, I'll give it a go later. As a music fanatic, and someone completely clueless about outfits/decorations/arrangements etc, this is where I have to come into my element.

I'm going to insist that the music is played full blast at the reception, and tell everyone to be quiet so we can hear it.

"And now, the best man speech..."
                    "Shhhhhh, you're ruining my playlist!"

It's a cover of Nat King Cole/Doris Day's 'When I Fall In Love'. It's probably not going to be that anyway, judging by the amount of times we change so I really wouldn't worry 😉 I wrote it off at the beginning when he was keen so it'll probably be written off again!

You'd think so. If he could bag himself penalties again, with a run up front looking set, he could be gold at around the £10m mark.

^ this. If he has an injury free season playing as CF with penalties he could end up with 25-30 goals and 10-15 assists in the league alone.

I agree, he was. Although I wouldn't be too quick to write him off just yet. Kane wasn't much better for the U21's, but I wouldn't write him off either.

It means he's probably less likely to drop into midfield, so you'd say that makes him better.

However, he is rubbish and RvP is still around. I'd play RvP over Rooney, personally.

Would you....mmm...interesting. All I can see with RVP is a player on the slippery slope of age related excuses....

Yeh, RvP is on his way down, but still much better than Rooney IMO.

RVP is still very good just could not settle into Van Gaal's system like Falcao. Despite many people saying he has lost a yard of pace, pace was never a part of his game.
His strength's are skill, movement, vision and finishing which as Ibra is showing are abilities that one doesn't lose with age.

Agree with this, but he has certainly lost he sharpness. Was at his best at Arsenal, little bit worse under SAF, then a little bit worse under Moyes, then a little bit worse under LvG.

Should be their starting striker when 100%, imo.

            10 years, 5 months ago

Oh aye...he'll still be capable of some good moments. The problem is that as he get's older it becomes harder for many to maintain fitness at that level. LVG, along with other manager's, have always got to ask themselves whether he is reliable enough to take a squad spot, not just now but by season's end. RVP is on the cusp of that at best.

            1. djenzio
              • 11 Years
              10 years, 5 months ago

agree pace was never part of his game and if LVG built a system to include him or built the time around him a little more he could be utilised a lot better.

good point about Falcao, it's the system LVG uses or his intense training sessions that make plays like RVP and Falcao useless in his system.

be interesting to see how Falcao does with Chelsea.

Ooft, I've not seen enough of Wilson to judge, nor Jovetic really (I was a huge fan before he joined City, but God knows what the injuries have done to him).

      Aguero
      Costa
      Rooney
      Sturridge
      Giroud
      Bony
      RVP
      Benteke
      Dzeko
      Remy
      Walcott
      Falcao
      Welbeck
      Ings

Walcott could move up or down, he needs a proper run as a striker to be judged. Saddens me to have Falcao so low, hoping he can rediscover his old self.

Can't be bothered to do them all but "assuming 100% fit" the top 5 are:

      1. Falcao
      2. Aguero
      3. Costa
      4. Rooney
      5. Bony

I have excluded RVP because he's past his best, Walcott because he hasn't played enough in that position and Sturridge because 100% fit doesn't exist for him.

If United sign a new striker, I'd say Rooney moves back to di Maria's place, and two of Mata, Depay and di Maria start out wide.

Shaw will almost certainly start at left back bar injury. I think Schweinsteiger/a new midfielder is more likely than a new striker, and with Fabinho at right-back I think Di María may be perfect in drifting in off that right flank into central midfield if he doesn't start their already.

You think you'll sign him even after you sign Schneiderlin? And well, yeah I would expect di Maria to take Mata's place as well, given a strong pre-season, with either Rooney/Schwensteiger (as you say) likely to take the vacant spot.

Just don't agree about Shaw with you. Rojo plays quite decently at LB, and Shaw needs to still grow - can't see him playing week in week out.

I think van Gaal may still be after an advanced midfielder, given that he plays almost a 1-2 midfield and Fellaini occupied one of those two. Fellaini was fairly effective but you could tell this strategy really didn't suit van Gaal, it worked during the first half but he still persisted with a diamond or 3-5-2 then finally gave in for the final third of the season. So yeah, Schweinsteiger would really suit Louis.

Some food for thought and a couple of reminders of some stats from last season as they're on this page.

Despite a poor season Baines finished up just 0.2 ppg less than Terry and Ivan.
As we contemplate our home and away tickers, the most popular score line last season was 0-1.

Yes, but I finally think Lukaku is on pens for them, and Martinez would want to make that clear for everybody and choose a proper #1 in the pecking order. Also he is getting old, and wouldn't move up and down so much?

I'd be tempted by Coleman at £6.0 or even £6.5...

Yeah, it's strange. Baines seems quite timid in holding his ground. Maybe he doesn't really want as many set pieces as he once had and is quit happy to surrender them.

Yes, pens are about confidence. Maybe when there are other guys sniffing around, he does not feel so confident anymore.

Arteta use to be on pens when he was at Everton in front of Baines.

If a MF or forward want them he seems to just give them up

I agree, Baines is still a half-decent option but I'd probably prefer Coleman or Stones. Baines did pick up a lot of injuries this season and I wouldn't be surprised if that continued. And obviously him being off pens/free kicks is detrimental to his appeal.

if Stones is 5 he could be gold but have a feeling he will be more expensive

Coleman should come in at 6 after a pretty poor season.

I think cost may be a key factor in this, there's no doubting his talent and he's got 3 really nice home games in the first 5(LEI, BOU, NEW) but he'll in in the awkward 7-8m bracket and rivalling Mané for a spot in my team.

I'd be disappointed if he came in at 7m+. I don't think any of our midfielders have been that much except for Nolan after a good 2012/13 season.

6.5 is the price I'm hoping for, but yeah I wouldn't be too surprised if he's 7m given his past stats.
