Earlier this week, Southampton announced the signing of Dutch goalkeeper Maarten Stekelenburg on a season-long loan deal from Fulham.

Having managed just one appearance during a temporary stint at Monaco last term, the 32-year-old shot-stopper is looking to muscle his way into the Saints’ starting lineup, in light of last season’s injury to first choice keeper, Frazer Forster:

“I’m very pleased that I’ve joined. It’s a big, nice club that will play European football – and I can play. Last year I didn’t play a lot, so it’s an opportunity for me. I’m grateful. The last two years weren’t the best of my career. As they say in England: the best is yet to come.”

The History

Stekelenburg trained at the youth academies of Zandvoort ’75 and VV Schoten, before teaming up with Ajax at the age of 15. He eventually broke into the first team in February 2002 and went on to record eight further Eredivisie appearances that season. Stekelenburg assumed the role of back-up for the next two campaigns, being handed 22 league outings.

In his first two terms as Ajax’s number one shot-stopper, the club secured back-to-back KNVB Cup trophies, while the 2007/08 season saw Stekelenburg named as Ajax’s Player of the Year. The Haarlem-born keeper played a bit-part role in 2008/09 due to injury but swiftly reclaimed his starting berth after rehabilitation. Stekelenburg scooped Ajax’s Player of the Year for a second time in the wake of the Dutch giants’ title-winning 2010/11 campaign.

Roma then came calling in the summer of 2011, snapping up the stopper in a €6 million deal. The first Dutch player to sign for the Serie A stalwarts, Stekelenburg managed 29 league appearances in his debut season but tallied just 19 starts in the 2012/13 campaign, prompting a switch to Fulham in June 2013.

Stekelenburg played under Rene Meulensteen but was cast into the shadows following the appointment of Felix Magath, with the German boss preferring David Stockdale between the sticks. As a result, the 6ft 6in keeper moved on loan to Monaco for the 2014/15 season, where he played second fiddle to their incumbent number one, Danijel Subašić, chalking up just eight appearances that included just a single Ligue 1 outing.

In the wake of Edwin van der Sar’s retirement, Stekelenburg established himself as the first-choice Netherlands keeper, notching 54 appearances between 2004 and 2012. He’s since fallen out of favour on the international scene, with a lack of playing time precluding a return to Oranje.

The Prospects

With three Southampton defenders (Nathaniel Clyne, Ryan Bertrand and Jose Fonte) among the top-six scoring defenders after the club racked up 15 clean sheets last term, it’s safe to assume that the Saints’ rearguard starters are due a price hike. As such, the keeper situation could present the most valuable route into their backline.

With some reports suggesting Fraser Forster could be sidelined for the majority of the upcoming season, Kelvin Davis, Paulo Gazzaniga and Stekelenburg will be tussling for that number one berth. Certainly, the latter’s recruitment would suggest that Ronald Koeman wasn’t satisfied with his options in the squad – a notion reinforced by the fact that Southampton recorded just one clean sheet in eight fixtures following Forster’s injury.

Perhaps crucially, it’s worth noting that Koeman shares history with Stekelenburg – having handed the keeper his debut at Ajax – so it’s unlikely the Fulham man would have made the switch without assurances of pitch time. Southampton’s pre-season campaign – which kicks off on July 8 and includes a couple of Europa League qualifying fixtures – will hopefully give a clear indication as to who he favours in Forster’s absence.

With Portuguese right-back Cedric Soares already on the books, and Clyne imminently set to join former loanee Toby Alderweireld through the exit door, Southampton’s defence could be set for major restructuring for the second successive season. However, the Saints coped admirably with the loss of Luke Shaw, Calum Chambers and Dejan Lovren last summer, so there’s every chance they could retain their defensive diligence under Koeman’s considered approach.

Given their favourable opening quintet of fixtures (new, EVE, wat, NOR, wba), Southampton defensive coverage looks like a good bet in the early stages. Aside from the two match-ups against newly promoted outfits, the Saints face off against three sides that they shut out at least once in the previous campaign, heightening their defensive points potential from the offset.

Really hope FPL screw prices up on a couple players and we have some decent bargains this year.

They did very well with pricing last season.

I reckon it's the biggest hurdle FPL have to overcome currently, a way of bringing in an extra 100+ truly viable players.

Help the casual or not, by the end of every season, those in the top 100k are pretty much choosing from the same 50 players and that kinda sucks....

50 is wishful thinking I think you have 6-7 options in GK (counting a rotation as 1 option), 15 or so in Defense, about 15 in mid, and about 7 up front. This isn't counting great differentials like players with below 5% ownership.

By 'did very well' I meant no real bargains, until Kane came along.

But agreed I'd like to see many more viable options brought into the game by some better bargains (suppose you could call it pricing) especially with less likely heros.....

Payet could be a bargain. I literally can't believe West Ham have bought him. It's a bit like when they had bought Tevez. I had just got back from Argentina where he was on every bill board in every advert and doing loads of TV shows. Then West Ham bought him. I was so baffled.

Players like Atsu and Ritchie arguably deserve 6.0s, but with any luck will be 5.5. Hopefully Milner keeps a similar price at Liverpool, if he's 6.0 or less I think he's a must have player.

Quality at the world cup, good at vitesse, decent at porto, never had a chance at everton. He has the ability for sure, but I think he needs confidence if he starts well he'll keep it up, if he starts poorly it'll take a while.

      Siggy was a bit mispriced...

I find that usually new signing from abroad are fairly well priced, naybe a tad expensive... the sweet spot is good proven FPL player who didnt get enough minutes due to injury or rotation

Walcott at 7.0-7.5 would be nice but he may have too much pedigree to drop there... Promoted teams rarely go above 5.5-6.0, so it could be a place to find bargains if they acquire proven FPL players

But 6.0 for a player who the season before was a 9.0 if I remember rightly, it'd be like Chamberlain being priced at 6.0 and then moving on loan to Leicester where he'd play every game.

He was priced at 8.0 the year before due to his performances at Swansea. He was then dropped in price as he wasn't a regular at Spurs

I think he'll be 8.0 again this season

Yes I understand your point of the reason he was priced how he was and it makes full sense. It was because the transfer happened suddenly there wasn;t rumours about it, it just happened. My point is he was priced wrongly by the start of the season, but not when the pricing was initially made.

Where as a player like Debuchy started off as a 5.5 newcastle defender, and then moved to arsenal. He was priced as an arsenal defender from the start even though the transfer hadn't gone through yet.

We need them completely unexpected transfers of quality players who have falling down the pecking order, like Atsu has, but preferably after the pricing has already been released.

Last season we had Sigurdsson 6.0, Chambers 4.5, Kane 4.5, it's about players who weren't expected to play anywhere near as many games as they did (Chambers, Kane, Bellerin) or made transfers from higher rated teams where they was back up to teams where they are key players (Sigurdsson)

The main way to benefit from the prices is when we get a player at a big team underpriced because he won't get the minutes, then transferred to a smaller team and nailed on for the season. Siggy last year was a great example - Wellbeck could have been but flopped at Arsenal just the same.

    2 questions

1: Anybody know when the price-list will likely be released. I remember last year it was mid-july, but it was a world cup year that year so can we expect it sooner?

2: Last page I asked who are the must-haves in your GW1 team, but that's not really what I meant.
Perhaps a better way of asking would be what do you see being the template GW1 team, at least on FFS.

Anyway didn't pay that close attention to the promoted sides last season, so I'm guessing at their starting line-ups for the coming season, how close am I?

I was talking about this with a friend van Wolfswinkel, Hooper & Jerome have all proven they can score 25+ goals at a slightly lower level, but put them in the premier league and they won't get more than 10. Grabban isn't experienced at premier league level, I think they should sell van Wolfswinkel and Lafferty and bring in a decent premier league striker, someone proven.

I think FPL wise he was in the perfect storm for that period. Playing off a striker in form, when WHU were hot.

If you can accommodate him in the hole you might be able to get something similar out of him.

Things are getting better. We're clearing out the deadwood and advocaat is banging the right drums in terms of transfers and money that needs to be spent. Now just a case of being able to attract the players we want.

They've just spent £10m on Alvarez, plus Giaccherini, Johnson, Wickham being pushed out wide often. I fear they'll go down this season

We're still trying to cancel the alvarez deal on the basis he's got a long term injury. I think we'll manage to give him back but have to pay couple mill compensation.

Wickham won't be pushed out wide next season, hence why we'r trying to sign the likes of downing (although downing can be used as No. 10 too). I am hoping giaccherrini will have a big season next year. He has the quality just has't been utlised properly yet, plus was injured for 5 months next season.

I trust in advocaat. Think we'll be ok. Although I do say that every summer.....

I think you need to find a system, maybe a 3-5-2 would work with PvA on the left, and put Giacherinni on the right?

          Pantilimon
          Roberge* - O'Shea - Brown*
Giacherinni - Rodwell - Cattermole - van Aanholt
          Gomez/Downing/Larsson
          Defoe - Wickham

Need to sign a few defenders, but you know that already 😉

Roberge?!!! Good knowledge but he'll be gone this summer.

We're signing coates and hopefully one of vlaar/van djk. Brown will simply be cover and experience in the dressing room.

Giaccherrini needs to be used as a number 10. Never gonna be a wing back, too light weight. We're after a RB and been linked with jenkinson.

We might only get one of the players I've mentioned above, but our team/formation would look more like this:

            Pantillimon
New RB Coates(or new CB) O'Shea PVA
            Cattermole Larrson
            AJ Giaccherini Downing
            Defoe/Wickham

I had to put Roberge and Brown in as you don't have any other CBs yet!! That's why they have the '*' haha. I think Giaccherinni would work there although not his best, but he knows that system from his Juve and Italy days. I was just offering it as an idea, I fully expect Sunderland to play either 4-2-3-1 or 4-3-3 next season.
              Something more like:
              Pantilimon
              Jenkinson - Vergini - O'Shea - van Aanholt
              Rodwell - Cattermole - Larsson
              Johnson - Defoe - Wickham

Afternoon all. Any word on when the site will open, I have itchy feet already? And who are the bargain strikers coming up from the Championship? This Watford chap seems to know where the goal is?

    1. Le Saux Solid Crew
      • 12 Years

Wilson, Deeney, Ighalo, Vydra, Jerome, Hooper, Grabban have all proven they can score at Championship level however Vydra, Jerome & Hooper have all failed at premier league level before.
I think Deeney will be this season's Austin, and Wilson will be the Ings.

Meanwhile in midfield Johnson got 15 goals at Norwich, Ritchie got the same amount at Bournemouth plus 17 assists compared to Johnson's 2. Johnson didn't get anywhere near that level at his last spell in the premier league so I don't expect a repeat. Meanwhile Ritchie's last taste at premier league football was 2 appearences as a 19 year old.

Deeney, Wilson & Ritchie will be the best options.
Jerome, Ighalo & Vydra could be viable.

Bacca is just four months older than Luis Suarez.

In his 2 seasons with Sevilla: 72 Apps, 34 Goals (League Only)

Some PL player's first 2 seasons at their clubs for comparison:
      Giroud - 70 Apps, 27 Goals
      Benteke - 70 Apps, 29 Goals
      Aguero - 74 Apps, 35 Goals

So 2 less apps than Aguero, 1 less goals.

Anyway to answer your actual question.
I'd put him somewhere between the level of a Giroud/Benteke/Lukaku etc. And an Aguero. Sturridge is probably slightly better, but expect them to score similar numbers when both fully fit.

Fabregas provided the most assists this season (19) in PL. Second highest was 12 by 4 players. Name all 4 of them.

^This, but these must be PL or even FPL assists, not assists on more universal standards (PL gives out assists easier than other leagues, and easier than Opta, too).

            See on that list:
Bolasie has 12, where as whoscored have him with 6.
Vardy has 12, where as whoscored have him with 7.
Silva has 12, where as whoscored have him with 7.

            On Whoscored it goes:
            Fabregas - 18
            Cazorla - 11
Di Maria, Brunt, Sigurdsson - 10

Okay. But that's just some perspective we should get when we compare FPL stats to particularly foreign league stats: different leagues give assists with different standards, PL's are pretty low, FPL's very low. E.g. Bolasie only got 6 assists from Opta, and in some leagues he would have got less (a case in point is Payet who got 17 from Opta, but only 16 from French league, who knows how many he would have got with FPL standards).

Interesting this. I think FPL gives higher assists. They some of them penalty wins, rebounds etc.

I think FPL give assists easier, I think in most leages or data collecters make it so the ball has to be played to the other player, where as in FPL it can brush off his ear and he gets an assist.

True. Lakaku being the master of that.

Does that mea Payet's numbers are even better when we see from FPL point of view?

Perhaps although it could also be worse when you think he crosses it in it hits andy carrolls ponytail, before falling for Nolan to score. Then Carroll get's the assist, assists in FPL are really down to luck.

I think we can expect to see numbers of around 5 goals, and 10 assists from him.

It could be that too when he gets to PL, but if we think of his Marseille season, what his stats would have been in FPL, see below.

It could mean (and does). But you can also see that Cazolra doesn't have more assist in FPL than opta states. Hazard only has one added. So, Payet would have more assists only if he has 1) won penalties; 2) had rebounds of his shots scored; 3) made inaccurate passes that have luckily bounced to an own player who scored them. I have no idea of how much of those there were in total, but I know he would have had at least two more assists in FPL: Gignac converted one penalty won by Payet, and at least one goal from Payet's rebound against Lille (French league doesn't count them).

Here are all his _16_ assists from last season:

                    https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=M0YeNQoIkJ4

They are all pure, direct assists. No penalties, no rebounds, no touches by opponent. I don't know what that 17th assist is that opta adds to this (whoscored.com uses opta data), but it's neither the penalty nor the rebound, as opta doesn't count them. So, 19+ FPL assists, I don't know how many exactly.

Yes, I think only PL counts penalties won as assists, and many leagues don't count rebounds either, or if a defender has touched the ball between the pass and the shot. FPL is very very generous.

Yeah I've noticed before. For example whoscored listed Vardy as getting 8 assists, but FPL have him on 11/12 I believe.

In addition to the initial £8 million fee - the majority of which will be paid up front and the rest in instalments - the figure could ultimately increase to £10 million once top-up clauses - likely to relate to appearances and future international recognition - are triggered. The deal also includes a sell-on.

I've never been in a pub that has a beer menu. Normally a choice of about 3 or 4 written on a chalkboard where I frequent!

Next trivia (have used FPL stats):

Defenders from FPL: Baines was the highest with 9 assists, Ivanovic provided 6 assists.

Which other 4 defenders complete the top 5? (4 coz more than 1 player for positions)

      Cresswell x 4

Cresswell gave 4. 5th position had 5 (again, in FPL terms)

Anybody (e.g. Hooky) got the lowdown on Tyrone Mings moving from Ipswich to Bournemouth? Heard good things about him but never seen him so a bit wary - unless his nickname is "The Merciless" in which case he's straight in my team.

Very impressive last season. Great athlete and good prospect

Good summation posted yesterday by DAT GUY

Bournemouth are to sign Ipswich left-back Tyrone Mings.

When the rumours started, I was pretty gutted as a Town fan, which tells you something. In the end, I'm pretty chuffed - we're getting a stack of money, Pitman on a permanent and Fraser on loan. Great deal.

But what does it mean for you/FPL? Well, the last Ipswich left-back who stepped up to the Prem was Aaron Cresswell. He didn't do too bad now, did he...

Mings was released by Southampton when he was young. Too small:

Then we signed him for £10k from non-league. He's filled out a bit since then:

Basically, he's an absolute beast. He's young (22), and only really had one full season as a pro, so there's plenty of room for improvement. His concentration lets him down sometimes, and he gets caught. But he has the physical attributes to get him out of trouble and, like Cresswell, this could end up being a bit of a bargain.

FPL-wise, his numbers aren't amazing from last season - 4 assists, 1 goal in 38 starts. But he'll be good to watch. I know some like the whoscored ratings, and he finished 39th overall.. joint with Alex Pritchard to put that in context. He's a very attacking full-back and I'll be keeping an eye on him.

Like so many, a lot will depend on price. I'm not sure there's much precedent for promoted clubs spending this much on a defender. In terms of attacking full backs, I think Trippier started at £5m(?), but his numbers were a lot better.

Plenty are mentioning Bournemouth rotation. If Mings is £4.5m, I'll be all over him (with only a hint of sentimentality). If he's £5m, then Francis would be my Bournemouth defender of choice. These two will be overlapping a lot as Ritchie and Atsu cut inside.

      Anyway, that's Mings for you.

Wow, great stuff Hooky. I'd hope he'd be £4.5m as he's got no prem experience in which case he could fit in my side (unfortunately this already has 27 players so a bit of thinning out to do yet). Cheers again.

Strewth, hadn't realised he was 6ft5 tall. I thought I was tall for a full back at 6ft (way) back in the day but his head's above the clouds.
