Earlier this week, Southampton announced the signing of Dutch goalkeeper Maarten Stekelenburg on a season-long loan deal from Fulham.

Having managed just one appearance during a temporary stint at Monaco last term, the 32-year-old shot-stopper is looking to muscle his way into the Saints’ starting lineup, in light of last season’s injury to first choice keeper, Frazer Forster:

“I’m very pleased that I’ve joined. It’s a big, nice club that will play European football – and I can play. Last year I didn’t play a lot, so it’s an opportunity for me. I’m grateful. The last two years weren’t the best of my career. As they say in England: the best is yet to come.”

The History

Stekelenburg trained at the youth academies of Zandvoort ’75 and VV Schoten, before teaming up with Ajax at the age of 15. He eventually broke into the first team in February 2002 and went on to record eight further Eredivisie appearances that season. Stekelenburg assumed the role of back-up for the next two campaigns, being handed 22 league outings.

In his first two terms as Ajax’s number one shot-stopper, the club secured back-to-back KNVB Cup trophies, while the 2007/08 season saw Stekelenburg named as Ajax’s Player of the Year. The Haarlem-born keeper played a bit-part role in 2008/09 due to injury but swiftly reclaimed his starting berth after rehabilitation. Stekelenburg scooped Ajax’s Player of the Year for a second time in the wake of the Dutch giants’ title-winning 2010/11 campaign.

Roma then came calling in the summer of 2011, snapping up the stopper in a €6 million deal. The first Dutch player to sign for the Serie A stalwarts, Stekelenburg managed 29 league appearances in his debut season but tallied just 19 starts in the 2012/13 campaign, prompting a switch to Fulham in June 2013.

Stekelenburg played under Rene Meulensteen but was cast into the shadows following the appointment of Felix Magath, with the German boss preferring David Stockdale between the sticks. As a result, the 6ft 6in keeper moved on loan to Monaco for the 2014/15 season, where he played second fiddle to their incumbent number one, Danijel Subašić, chalking up just eight appearances that included just a single Ligue 1 outing.

In the wake of Edwin van der Sar’s retirement, Stekelenburg established himself as the first-choice Netherlands keeper, notching 54 appearances between 2004 and 2012. He’s since fallen out of favour on the international scene, with a lack of playing time precluding a return to Oranje.

The Prospects

With three Southampton defenders (Nathaniel Clyne, Ryan Bertrand and Jose Fonte) among the top-six scoring defenders after the club racked up 15 clean sheets last term, it’s safe to assume that the Saints’ rearguard starters are due a price hike. As such, the keeper situation could present the most valuable route into their backline.

With some reports suggesting Fraser Forster could be sidelined for the majority of the upcoming season, Kelvin Davis, Paulo Gazzaniga and Stekelenburg will be tussling for that number one berth. Certainly, the latter’s recruitment would suggest that Ronald Koeman wasn’t satisfied with his options in the squad – a notion reinforced by the fact that Southampton recorded just one clean sheet in eight fixtures following Forster’s injury.

Perhaps crucially, it’s worth noting that Koeman shares history with Stekelenburg – having handed the keeper his debut at Ajax – so it’s unlikely the Fulham man would have made the switch without assurances of pitch time. Southampton’s pre-season campaign – which kicks off on July 8 and includes a couple of Europa League qualifying fixtures – will hopefully give a clear indication as to who he favours in Forster’s absence.

With Portuguese right-back Cedric Soares already on the books, and Clyne imminently set to join former loanee Toby Alderweireld through the exit door, Southampton’s defence could be set for major restructuring for the second successive season. However, the Saints coped admirably with the loss of Luke Shaw, Calum Chambers and Dejan Lovren last summer, so there’s every chance they could retain their defensive diligence under Koeman’s considered approach.

Given their favourable opening quintet of fixtures (new, EVE, wat, NOR, wba), Southampton defensive coverage looks like a good bet in the early stages. Aside from the two match-ups against newly promoted outfits, the Saints face off against three sides that they shut out at least once in the previous campaign, heightening their defensive points potential from the offset.

Mmmm, reasonable...although Sanchez will be the biggest pick. It will mean using a transfer but I fancy that if Wenger gives Sanchez two or three weeks break then plenty of folk who had unwittingly bought him will be forced to sell him...You may get a 0.5 bounce by starting with Wally and then pick up Sanchez later.

I have a discussion for us:

With FPL handing out assists easier than every other data collector. Can we expect to see a lower amount of assists for a player such as payet?

For example: Pienaar crosses the ball in, the ball brushes Lukaku's ear and Naismith slots it home. In any other league Pienaar would get the assist, or no assist would be awarded. Where as FPL would give it to Lukaku.

I think the reason it doesn't affect players such as Fabregas is because he plays a lot of balls on the floor, where as with someone who crosses it more, their assists are affected and would total to a lower amount.

I think this is something we need to consider more, whether a player crosses on the floor or in the air, as it directly affects their assist potential.

I'm not sure it matters that much. I quite like the way the flaky assist rules cause angst, mayhem and much spilling of spit at the moment. I think I may be on my own though.

I think it's not looked at as much as some people should, when people look at stats they say, "x player had the second most crosses in the league", yes that means they have a higher chance of assisting a goal, but it also means they have a higher chance of the assist getting "stolen".

I think we should look at more players who win penalties and player the ball on the floor than players who cross and take corners.

Obviously there's no definite answer and whatever view you or I take, there's reasons that the other is better.

This is indeed an issue. Forwards get assists easier in FPL. However, while it would maybe rob a player like Payet or Pienaar some assists, you should not think that this particular factor would affect such player's assist data who comes from a foreign league, e.g. that Payet would have got less FPL assists with his last season performances. See my reply to you earlier:

Here are all his _16_ assists from last season:

      https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=M0YeNQoIkJ4

They are all pure, direct assists. None would have been lost due to FPL assist rules. No penalties, no rebounds, no touches by opponent or own player. I'd wager, if it touched an own player who didn't intentionally pass it, it would be counted as unassisted. I know he would have had _at least_ two more assists in FPL: Gignac converted one penalty won by Payet, and at least one goal from Payet's rebound against Lille (French league doesn't count them). I don't know what that 17th assist is that opta adds to this (whoscored.com uses opta data), but it's neither the penalty nor the rebound, as opta doesn't count them. So, 19+ FPL assists last season, I don't know how many exactly.

It's a completely different deal if, once he gets to West Ham, Carroll gets on the way of all of his crosses and deflects them to somewhere else instead of heading them in.

      1. Le Saux Solid Crew

So in Payet's case if, somehow he played the exact same in the PL he would have the same amount of assists? That's why I think Downing's assist's increased this season, 1) He wasn't crossing it from the wing, he was playing central through balls. And 2) When he was crossing from the wing it was the smaller Sakho & Valencia he was aiming for.

So perhaps if a team has a tall striker (Crouch, Carroll, Lukaku) we can expect their wingers to get less assists, even though it makes sense for them to have more.

Sorry if I didn't get my point across well.

No, he would ave had 19 or more assists in FPL if he played exactly the same.

I've been considering your second point as well and think there's some truth in it. If West Ham plays with Valencia and Sakho upfront, Payet's assist points should be pretty safe. That said, Gignac is also a big guy, so could have negated some of Payet's assists at Marseille. I don't know.

I don't think Gignac would "steal" as many assists, as he's more likely to score the chance than Carroll is. Either way, it will be interesting to see and if he can get anywhere near that level of assists he'll be in my team for sure!

Good idea, I think they should get another 2 x cameras in + another official (nowhere near enough of them IMO, should be at least 11 to match the teams + at least 3 subs) in to assess whether the ball is on the ground or not (I reckon any more than 1" off the ground counts as in the air) and then have Steven Hawking brought in for some applied maths formulae as the final arbiter re whether the assist was or wasn't in the air. Or not.

I just think that the rules re assists are plenty complicated enough already and whether the ball is in the air or not is irrelevant. IMO you'll never make everybody happy all of the time and the current system works ok + a bit of arguing about whether it was a valid assist or not livens things up sometimes.

The last sentence starts "I think this is something we need to consider more, whether a player crosses on the floor or in the air". It was intended as a bit of light-hearted "banter" as per your name, that's all-my point (facetious though it was) was that the current rules are fine and that I personally don't care re whether the ball is in the air or not-it really isn't worth getting worked up over so I'm going to leave it at that.

Yeah, "we need to consider more", not the famous FPL towers, but obviously us, when we consider who have a high assist potential as FPL prospects, as the whole post is about assessing the assist potential of individual players in FPL.

I have nothing against banter, but yours misses the subject completely.

I don't have a problem with them assists being given to the striker or think it needs to be changed. But I think we unfairly overate or underrate certain players assist potential due to them having a high number of crosses. If a players constantly crosses in the air and his assist's are for lack of a better word, being stolen then his assist potential is lowered because of that.

Our current way of looking at the likelihood a player will get an assist is wrong, the way the assists are awarded is up for debate, and perhaps could be improved but that's not what we are talking about.

Perhaps I worded it badly? Although others seem to understand my point.

I'm not asking for or suggesting that the assist system be changed, but what I am suggesting is that we should look at different way of tracking assist potential, as the height of the strikers clearly changes the creative players number of assists. Carroll/Lukaku all get fairly high number of assists which in other leagues would be credited to the wingers.

The assist system is fine, our way of tracking the likelihood that a player gets an assist could be better.

You've definitely found something here. There must be a way to assess this more accurately, though.

On a side note: those would likely be counted as unassisted goals elsewhere. FPL doesn't only favour strikers on assists, it gives assists more generously than real leagues and particularly many foreign leagues. So often those just would not be assists elsewhere, not even to the winger. That's the point I made about Payet's assists above.

I tried to touch on that in the original post, but didn't really go into it.

I think Payet will do well in the premier league and he'll set up a fair amount of goals.

Regardless all this is an interesting debate and would be interested in seeing the FFS staff touch on it in an article or ScoutCast. Hopefully they do.

But for starters we should check a bit how big phenomenon this is. Carroll and Lukaku don't steal every cross assist. They may steal so few of them that the phenomenon is completely negligible.

I think we should touch on the assist potential though, and how it can be different in regards to either the type of strikers they play with, or the type of balls they play.

I actually _know_ that you're touching a real issue with your on ground v. on air cross point. But it's not just about getting the assist, it is about getting the goal. Studies have been made on goal potential from different types of crosses. They're not completely conclusive, though, rather approximate and suggestive. Anyway, it would be nice if we could have stats for crosses from 'deep' and 'high' final third, or from final fourth even, as well as a stat for low and high crosses, because there's a different rate by which they are converted.

That said, skilled crossers don't just smash the ball in the box but find their player with high crosses, as you can see on the Payet video above. By the way, he's had about 30%-31% average cross accuracy during his time at Marseille (CL included, which skews this a bit as he had 45% accuracy there). That's phenomenal.

I wonder if it means he might actually get more assists? If he's generally involved in play, he could benefit from the odd flock of the head or stroke of the boot. Plus winning free kicks and penalties may not count in official lists, where they will do here?

With any luck yes, but I do think if Carroll is playing then the likelihood that Payet gets an assist lowers. Either way I think he'll be in my team now that I know his assist's are, assists that would be given in the FPL anyway.

I feel the same way about Mikel as a Chelsea fan. He's made over 300 apps for the Club he's the second longest serving player behind Terry. And still get's hated on by every Chelsea fan. He's meant to come on when we're winning to protect the lead. He does his job well, he doesn't think he deserves more or any of that. He just get's on with it quality club servant who just is very underrated will be sad to see him leave this summer.

I think if Firmino plays up front and is listed as a MID which he well could, and starts off well he'd be a must have. There's also arguments for Milner, Henderson, Lallana, Sterling (if he stays), Coutinho, Ings, Balotelli, Sturridge etc. especially with the opening fixtures. Personally I'll be starting with Firmino & Milner/Henderson depending on price, only for the first few games unless they're performing amazingly well though.

Firmino reminds me of Sanchez, he could hurt you if you don't own him, but may be a risk at the start.

Wages are probably the main issue with established PL players. I can't imagine any of their current squad are on more than 20k a week. They won't be getting much revenue from gate receipts either.

It's a good real life signing for West Ham, I just wouldn't expect him to replicate Ligue 1 form in the PL. Look at Cabella, loads of goals and assists for Montpellier, struggled in his first season at Newcastle. That's all I'm saying.

Wanyama, he's a great player but he's not the smartest, judging by the Arsene Wenger thing and now this:

" The really good thing about it is that whichever club he has moved to, he has delivered the goods and services. 17 assists last season was by all means terrific but it was not a shock to the majority of OM fans. In the 2012/13 season for fellow Ligue 1 club Lille, Payet recorded 14 assists. This is down to his impressive range of passing."

Kouyate in an attacking right sided role Doos? I think he's a good player but that's really not his strength.

In that formation I could see Noble dropped for Kouyate with Valencia slightly OOP on the right

I think I've got the spine of my team already sorted

      Adrian Boruc (10m GKs )
      Koscielny Smalling 4.5 4.5 4.0 (24.5m Def )
      Hazard Sanchez *** Ritchie 4.5 (33.5m mids)
      Aguero *** *** (12.5m)

Which comes to 80.5m, so that leaves 19.5m for 1 x mid and 2x forwards
      A: Payet Deeney Vardy
      B: 4.5 Deeney Rooney
      C: 5.5 Deeney Benteke

Also, What teams would provide the best 2 rotating 4.5 defenders ?

It's all well and good, doing one of these now. I'd be lying if I said I hadn't but it really is too hard to guess player pricing as even a 0.5 one way or the other makes a big difference.

But with them players I'm valuing them at:

        5.5 - 4.5
        6.5 - 5.5 - 4.5 - 4.5 - 4.0
        11.5 - 11.5 - 8.0 - 5.5 - 4.5
        12.5 - 5.5 - 6.0

That's with Payet, Deeney & Vardy.

        1. Jay_

Talking of addiction I'm sure that at one point someone on here (or that used to be) ended a date early as they needed to go and make an FPL transfer before deadline

I have the same forward line and am going Fischer. Bit of a coin toss really though.

Maybe Varela is our RB for next year. Seemed very easy for Liverpool to get Clyne, Utd could of at least tried to drive the price up.
