New recruits to the Premier League from both promoted sides and abroad were among the issues considered this week by our community writers and hot topic posters. Rotation strategies once again come under discussion and we also found out about some of our community’s Fantasy football family rivalries.

The Community Articles

Goalkeepers came under the spotlight of Kompany Man in his look at why West Brom’s Ben Foster and Boaz Myhill may just be 2015/16’s most important goalkeepers for Fantasy managers. Those looking to use West Brom’s defensive assets within their squad are also advised to read Teddy’s look at next season’s best rotation pairs.

RuthNZ completed his epic team review series this week, with Aston Villa and Leicester and Newcastle and Sunderland bringing this informative collection to an end, while Bowstring the Trout has been taking a look at Crystal Palace’s incredible turnaround in fortunes under Alan Pardew.

Don’t forget, if you’ve got some analysis, scout reports or features brewing, be sure to visit our community section to submit your article.

The Hottest Topics

Giggs Boson has been looking at the promoted sides’ prospects of success, with his analysis of their clean sheets potential as they make the step up to top-flight football. The Serjeant also dropped by within this discussion to offer some further information on the prospects of shut-outs for Norwich, Watford and Bournemouth.

Defenders and goalkeepers from promoted sides are likely to be within the budget price bracket and therefore prime candidates for a rotation strategy. But with Petr Cech’s likely move to Arsenal and price hikes likely for former budget favourites such as Costel Pantillimon we asked  could the end the cheap rotating keeper strategy be coming?

Other potential value players for rotation could be the wave of new recruits into the Premier League from abroad this summer. Here we look back on some of the community’s favourite additions to the Premier League, and some of those who failed to make the grade.

There was further fixture-based discussion this week around defender selection in Ludo‘s look at the Premier League’s toughest fixtures, Couti and the Below5th‘s research into the managers most likely to keep clean sheets and Twisted Saltergater‘s update to his clean sheet ticker.

Meanwhile, reliable old stagers, who are proven performers most week, were discussed in Lucy’s look at fixture proof defenders.

Elsewhere, Anorak revealed his a love hate relationship with Ultimate Fantasy Premier League, and his desire to see it back next season.

Relationships of the family variety can also be put to the test when partners, sons, daughters and siblings take each other on in Fantasy Football. Wakey and Lucy are amongst our community members to tell us about how their family competitions pan out.

The Members Tables

Chenku has taken the simple approach to organising his latest table on the best attackers last season by sorting by the number of goals scored. But his interesting table has more to it than that essential statistic, with assists, chance creation and goal conversion rates also taken into account.

If you’re a member and are yet to get to grips with the custom statistics tables, you can view this movie for an explanation of how they work. Also, remember to tag them so that people can find the tables with ease.

Depends on what the people at home think though, if you were to use it against them I mean, they could just say they're no better than the rest etc. They'll find a way to deflect it is what I mean.

Oof, it really will! Some people would even start a new FPL account (you have to give a damn about an arbitrary rating on a specialist website that most people won't see or care about though 😉 )

Hall of Fame is based on users who are in the FFS and FFS Member FPL leagues, guessing you can't join one of those now so it will probably have to wait until FPL reopens.

It took me a few years to take this game seriously. I didn't even understand the rules for 2 years, and played in very relaxed circles. Then I joined a cash-prize money league 4 seasons ago... bye bye casual status.

Yeah I only turned 'non-casual/FFS nerd' last season. See no point in joining this FFS League/Hall of Fame stuff because I don't stand a chance but I refuse to start a new account. It all strikes me as a massive ego trip anyway 😀

Which is better for those of us who put many hours into FPL:
A - a few underpriced bargains making it easier to cram in plenty of heavy hitters
B - a tough pricing structure meaning some hard decisions need to be made

I'd argue B suits us better but everybody seems to crave situation A.

If people get priced out of options, it should give the better players the edge. But yeah, everyone wants the value for money bargains and the glamour of the big names.

I'd rather have B and know I have to get the balance right.

That's where I'm heading with it - when you're forced into difficult decisions we should come out on top due to extra information giving more informed judgments. Hard not to wish for a Pantilimon to Man Utd transfer just after the prices come out though 🙂

A is desirable but never a done deal.
Siggy was a bargain pre-season but lots of people were unsure enough not to play him GW1.
Kane nearly broke last season with his price/points but who had him GW1?

B seems makes every decision do or die which I like, especially coupled with fast moving prices.

I'm not so much of a fan of the fast moving prices - I'm a dullard so having time to reflect is valuable to me, I prefer fantasy football to fantasy stock market 🙂

Last year the price rises were slow but the drops were fast which made the game easy, especially as we always knew we can buy an off form/injured/suspended players later on cheaper prices. I felt that if Rises and Falls were similarly paced, the game would have been more balanced

      Coin flip I reckon GW.

A can favour the dedicated player if the bargains aren't obvious, while B can lead to lucky decisions well within the reach of the casual. I see your point though.

      1. Black Knights
        • 13 Years

I think the casual is more likely with B to throw the big guys in, then a plethora of budget options they know nothing about. Whereas the hardcore will make decisions to sacrifice a big hitter in order to accommodate a good rotation or a mid-priced gem, and base decisions more on fixtures and form, which would benefit them.

Ooh, I've coaxed Anorak from his lurky hole 🙂

Fair point, although the casuals aren't slow to jump on a bargain if it materialises so I still think B is our best scenario. Screw the casuals!

Kane took half the fun out last year for me. Such a default player in every team and so cheap that it took TV out of the picture. Didn't like it much (except when I sold him in GW33 I think 😉 ) and don't want a similar situation.

Having said that, I wouldn't like if FPL towers price someone too high and coz of that, we can't buy an exciting player in our teams.

The earlier discussion about how FPL assists are different from assists awarded by other sources, I did a bit of research and tried to compare two different set of sources. I compared # of FPL assists (transfermarkt gives similar numbers) and # of ESPN assists (whoscored gives similar numbers.
The numbers below are arranged as:

    FPL rank...Name..#FPL assists, #ESPN (FPL-ESPN)....ESPN rank

    1…Fàbregas - 19 , 18 (1)….....1
    2…Bolasie - 12 , 6 (6)….........25
    3…Vardy - 12 , 8 (4)…...........12
    4…Silva - 12 , 7 (5)…............19
    5…Di María - 12 , 10 (2)….......5
    6…Cazorla - 11 , 11 (0)........…2
    7…Hazard - 10 , 9 (1)…..........8
    8…Henderson - 10 , 9 (1)….....7
    9…Sterling - 10 , 7 (3)….........16
    10…Agüero - 10 , 8 (2)….........9
    11…Sigurdsson - 10 , 10 (0).…4
    12…Brunt - 10 , 10 (0)…..........3
    13…Baines - 9 , 9 (0)…...........6
    14…Navas - 9 , 8 (1)..............11
    15…Tadic - 9 , 7 (2)…............18
    16…Sánchez - 8 , 8 (0)….......14
    17…Oscar - 8 , 8 (0)…...........10
    18…Milner - 8 , 7 (1)…...........20
    19…Janmaat - 8 , 6 (2).......…23
    20…Phillips - 8 , 8 (0)….........13
    21…Austin - 8 , 5 (3)….........>30
    22…Ward-Prowse - 8 , 6 (2)…26
    23…Montero - 8 , 7 (1).......…17
    24…Downing - 8 , 8 (0)….......15
    25…Welbeck - 7 , 3 (4)…......>30
    26…Puncheon - 7 , 7 (0)….....21
    27…Coutinho - 7 , 5 (2)….....>30
    28…Colback - 7 , 6 (1)…........28
    29…Lamela - 7 , 7 (0)….........22
    30…Kane - 7 , 4 (3)…...........>30

    - Biggest beneficiaries of FPL system are: Bolasie, Vardy, Silva, Welbeck, Kane, Austin.
    - There was not even a single player who got fewer assists in FPL system.
    - Siggy, Cazorla, Baines - same numbers in both systems but their ranks improve sharply
    - Silva loses quite sharply. Bolasie and Vardy as well.
    - Brunt, you legend. 3rd highest assists by non-FPL rules

Make what you make of it but one thing is for sure, if Payet's numbers from previous seasons were calculated using FPL system, they may only go up rather than going down.

Germany ties with a very lucky penalty. May even have hit rather the shoulder than the arm.

Anyway, France's management has been extremely unwise, their manager Bergeroo can only blame himself for this. They controlled the game completely, Germany had nothing to say. Then after they scored the first goal, which is just 1 goal margin, never sufficient, they took the whole 10 women on their own half and let the Germans attack. It is very obvious that they should have continued to dominate the game and be sure that Germans won't get anywhere near their box. When you let opponent come at your box constantly, at some point something like this is going to happen. It is harder to get the dominance back than to keep it up.

Another piece of poor management is that France has only used one substitution. It's well shown that it is beneficial to use substitutions early on. First one at 70 minutes, then nothing. That should have been already the second substitution. And if you're leading, it's not good to take off your fastest player who can form a threat and play time.

This turn of match is a point for women's football in that Germany has a female manager, France a male one. 😀

The French were desperately hoofing for far too long. They took the lead and then dropped so so so deep. They should have just kept going. Thomis had Kemme on her arse most of the game when they were pressing.

      Agreed, though, VERY dodgy penalty.

Exactly. It's always a stupid strategy to give your dominance away. Germany would have not had anything to say about this match. Stupid management. Much better decisions by Neid, she was able already in beginning of second half to make the needed change to bring her team a bit in the match, although they really only got into it because of her colleagues bad decision. It's strange really, as France has been continuing to push in every match so far. Maybe Bergeroo was afraid of Germany? But when his girls had shown their superiority throughout the match, he should have gathered a bit of courage from that and trusted them.

Imo, also a bad substitution to take Le Sommer out. If this goes to penalties, she would have been one of the takers.

It's more that Bouhaddi is quite mediocre stopper. I think she's in the team rather because she's good with the ball.

So, in short, he has used his substitutions too late, and both have been wrong substitutions too. Still one to use. It's extra-time. Opponent dominates. Sure there's something he could do?

And made up for that by trying to break Lavogez's neck. 😉

No, but seriously, that was awful to watch. I don't think I've seen a move that cynical in women's football. Even in men's football that's quite rare. But as Holy See noted, this is how it begins.

                  Kemme's a good player though.

Second French substitution incoming. Very mean, blatant foul by Kemme, could have paralysed Lavogez. Strangely not even a warning.

Going to extra time. If this goes to penalties, Germany will win it easily. Angerer is times better shot stopper than Bouhaddi. That usually makes the difference.

First bit of this WC I've watched. Quality of play is a bit better than I expected, much more physical game than I expected, or remembered from a few years ago, officiating is woeful. Shame they seem to have the theatrics/diving of the men's game, but hardly surprising. & this French team is fit. Well, I'm not blind. Unlike the ref.

I haven't seen much diving and theatrics in the WC as a whole, just this game. Definitely lower frequency overall than international men's football.

It's strange it took them 5 minutes to get Hamraoui back on field for a nose bleed.

Meanwhile, Behringer twisted her ankle quite nastily. Hope she didn't get injured. Looked very bad.

    Both accidental situations, no foul.

France dominating again, but I think it's too late. Too bad to see this team go out. Great players and this match has really showed they would be the best if they had a coach who let them. Considering that Germany is presumably the best team around. In fact, this should be the final. It's awful that one of these teams will be out of semis. Women's football doesn't have that many top NT's that they could really be wasted to QF's without level of semis dropping seriously.

And as I wrote this, Thiney missed the chance of her life-time. Amazing miss. No pressure, nothing, all the time, and wide.

Kemme's legs are gone it seems. Understandable, as she's been made to run quite a lot tonight.

One of the worst ever. And from a top scorer too. It's hard to think of a worse miss in match of even nearly as great importance.

When Germany wins the penalties, they'll look at Thiney, but they really should look at Bergeroo. He's the one who got them to this mess.

Germany. Even if the girls have no legs left to shoot, the better GK will make the difference. And more experience too.

      Shooters:

      Mittag
      Sasic
      Dabric
      Marozsan
      Behringer

      Necib
      Thiney
      Abily
      Hamraoui
      Lavogez

Not necessarily this order. I think all players who came in as subs will shoot, except Thiney after that miss.
