After finishing seventh under former manager David Moyes in the previous campaign, 2014/15 was a transitional one for Man United. New boss Louis van Gaal splashed the cash on the likes of Angel Di Maria, Ander Herrera and Luke Shaw, in addition to drafting in Radamel Falcao on a season-long loan, yet despite having no European fixtures to concern themselves with, the Old Trafford outfit struggled for cohesion in the Dutchman’s first year at the helm.

Certainly, in front of their own fans, United were a real force to be reckoned with. Van Gaal’s side scored 41 home goals – a tally bettered only by neighbours City (44) – yet on the road, they were a different prospect altogether and netted just 21 times, only two more than relegated QPR.

    Diego Armando Maradona is perhaps the least surprising entry on this list. Despite appearing in an anti-drugs campaign in 1982, Maradona was by then already addicted to cocaine, amongst others. In 1994 he was busted for performance enhancing drugs too. After Argentina’s World Cup game against Greece, Maradona’s urine sample contained traces of five different substances: ephedrine, norephedrine, pseudoephedrine, norpseudoephedrine and metephedrine.

    In fact, a year earlier, the Argentina squad had already used doping. Maradona himself blamed the Argentina football federation for doping players without their knowledge before the decisive World Cup qualifier against Australia.

    "They put something in the coffee and it made us run more. Grondona was well aware of it, he told us that there wouldn’t be doping controls. You have got to be pretty dumb if you go through ten controls, and then there is not one in the game which decides qualification."

      Are any of those drugs listed specifically "performance enhancers"?.

      He was flippin awesome IMO. He could do all those amazing things while thuggish CBs hacked the shite out of him. Not saying Messi can't do what Diego did...but he certainly hasn't had to put up with the potential leg breakers that Maradonna put up with.
