After numerous weeks of speculation, Chelsea finally announced the season-long loan acquisition of Radamel Falcao from French outfit Monaco last Friday.

Prior to the agreement, Jose Mourinho confirmed he was keen to bring the Colombian to Stamford Bridge in spite of a disastrous temporary spell at Old Trafford last term:

“If I can help Falcao reach his level again, I will do it. It hurts me that people in England think that the real Falcao is the one we saw at Manchester United.”

The History

Born in Santa Marta, Colombia, Falcao started out at second division side Lanceros Boyaca, earning his senior debut for the club at the age of 13. He spent two seasons at the Tunja-based club, netting one goal in eight matches. Falcao then moved to Argentina to sign for top tier outfit River Plate in February 2001.

After being handed his first start for the full squad in in the 2005/06 season, Falcao went on to notch seven goals in 11 appearances. Ligament damage to Falcao’s right knee restricted him to just 20 league appearances (1033 minutes) in the following campaign, yet the clinical Colombian recovered to chalk up 24 league goals and five assists across the subsequent two campaigns.

Falcao then plotted a course to Europe, penning a deal with Porto for a €4 million fee. He finished his first season at the Dragons as the league’s second-highest scorer, registering 25 goals and seven assists in 28 league outings. The next campaign proved to be similarly profitable, as Falcao tallied 16 goals and four assists in 22 league outings while also setting a new record for goals (17) in the Europa League.

Atletico Madrid paid €40 million to sign Falcao in the summer of 2011, making him the club’s record transfer. He enjoyed two hugely successful campaigns with Rojiblancos, recording 52 goals and five assists in 68 outings, and scooping two trophies (Europa League and Copa del Rey).

Falcao chose to sign for Monaco in May 2013, yet his debut season in Ligue 1 was hamstrung by thigh and knee injuries, meaning he only mustered nine goals in 17 league outings. After sitting out six months of action with a knee complaint, Falcao played in the first three fixtures of the 2014/15 campaign, before Manchester United snapped him up on a £6 million loan deal. He struggled to make an impact at Old Trafford, bagging four goals and five assists in 26 appearances (14 starts).

On the international stage, Falcao has registered 25 goals in 61 appearances and recently became his country’s highest-ever scorer after netting in a friendly against Costa Rica last month.

The Prospects

Given that Mourinho started every league match last season with a 4-2-3-1 formation, it’s fair to say that the Blues’ new striker faces a tough task to nail down a regular role over the campaign ahead.

Clearly, Diego Costa – who finished third in the scoring charts (20 goals) despite his injury travails – will remain as the first-choice frontman, limiting Falcao’s opportunities. Nonetheless, Costa’s ongoing hamstring issues and penchant for incurring the referee’s wrath is an issue that his manager has to address.

Costa started just 24 league outings last term (missing eight matches through injury and four through suspension) allowed Didier Drogba and Loic Remy to earn eight and six league starts respectively. With Drogba now gone, it’s no surprise that Mourinho delved into the market to acquire a quality back-up in his pursuit of consecutive titles.

With the likes of Palace and West Ham linked with a move for Remy, Mourinho’s shopping spree could well continue, with the Blues reportedly keen on Charlie Austin as a replacement should the Frenchman depart. Either way, it seems likely that Falcao will start the season as Chelsea’s third-choice forward, with minutes off the bench the likeliest scenario over the initial stages, at least.

If Falcao does find some rhythm, it would certainly afford Mourinho the luxury of exercising more caution with Costa’s minutes. Should that be the case, Eden Hazard’s claims as the prime route into Chelsea’s attack would be strengthened further, given that PFA Player of the Year started every league match for the champions in 2014/15.

Although the calibre of Chelsea’s top Fantasy assets renders them almost fixture proof, it’s worth nothing that the London club face a tough start to the new campaign. Beyond a home opener against Swansea City, Mourinho’s troops embark on a challenging road schedule (mci, wba, eve) and a visit from Arsenal within the first six Gameweeks. It’s unlikely to discourage investment in Chelsea’s big-hitters, though, particularly when other high-priced recruits like Sergio Aguero and Alexis Sanchez have question marks against their availability for Gameweek 1 by virtue of their involvement in the final of the Copa America.

Does it ever not rain in Wales? No offence but it's an awful place to try and arrange a big event that relies on dry conditions. I went there from Southampton during the Champion's Trophy in 2013 and watched a 100 over match get reduced to 50 odd. Let's everyone down.

Definitely doesn't kill him as an option. As we've seen Costa is extremely clinical and even if his minutes were curtailed by Falcao's presence, I could still see him hitting 15+ league goals if he stays injury-free.

      No, but Hazard does

Costa is too expensive to not be on pens or FKs
This and his propensity for picking up cheap yellows and lack of BPs

Hazard and Costa started 24 matches together last season.

Hazard scored 148 points, Costa scored 143.

Hazard really benefits from being the main man when Costa is out. If the BPS system is adjusted even slightly, I'd much rather have Costa, particularly as he's likely to be the cheaper of the two, and there are more good midfield than forward options.

Agree with Kurtinho said on the previous page - feel Falcao will be there to add another option to supplement Costa when chasing a game. I don't think, particularly at the start of the season that Falcao will have any impact on Costa as a fantasy option, Costa will be first choice until injury strikes.

seriously? Jonty you're better than this. This site is better than this. Falcao is finished and will be, at best, third choice back up to Costa and one other striker (if Remy leaves). Costa remains as essential as he was before, providing he can perhaps steer clear of injury and cards this season...

Did nobody watch Falcao last season? Did nobody watch him the Copa America? He just can't move properly anymore and his confidence is shot to bits.

Indeed. Its starting a discussion on how he will fit into the Chelsea squad. You clearly have strong opinions on the matter which is great. I'm not saying he will or won't that's for the community to discuss. My job here is to promote discussion. The fact that so many already have started discussing it proves its a good thing to discuss.

it's wasting time when we could be discussing the merits of the newly promoted teams which people know little about. Everybody knows who falcao is and everybody who has seen him play knows that... he no longer can.

I'm sorry, I just don't think it's a topic worthy of discussion. I rarely complain on here I think this "saga" has just hit a nerve as I have a chelsea mate who is outrageously smug that he has "stolen" falcao from Utd's clutches.

Most United fans would have paid their own money for him never to play for them again.

You dont have to get involved in the discussion if you dont thinks its worthy....

Start one on your preferred choice if you like....

For the record im a United Fan i would prefer to have him at the club than not with the current squad... If RVP is going and Rooney gets injured (happens every season) it will end up being Fellaini up front for gods sake!

(Utd fan also and I'd much rather have Fellaini up front than Falcao! - the latter was just a passenger)

Plus I think LVG is going to play Depay up top for large parts of the season as well. I don't think Hernandez will go anywhere and he'll likely be our back up with Wilson.

A better question might be how much Fabregas' form affects Costa's form. Correct me if I am wrong, but Fab started playing higher up the pitch in the latter parts of the season and was a bit out of sorts?

It's more about Fabregas' form gets affected by Costa's injuries/bans. Remy coincidentally always got injured when Costa was out too and we had to play Drogba upfront who just couldn't complete a 90-minute game, let alone play 3 games in a week.

A fit Costa and Fabregas' attack potential (FPL Wise) improves drastically.

Falcao looked pretty good last season but the players around him never learned how to get the best out of his excellent movement off the ball. I think he tried to hard to fit in to the epl culture chasing defenders down and playing too much outside the box. He is a van nistelrooy mark 2 not a wayne Rooney. I don't think he will get in ahead of Costa but I think he'll do better at Chelsea than Utd as they have a far superior midfield and all round team in general supporting him.

Beggars belief that they always sign some old codger (Drogba, Shevchenko etc) for serious cash rather than blood some youth as back up.

It is a shame, the problem is those players need games to develop and Chelsea as a rule don't seem to offer that so they have to farm them out eventually. They've all had successful loans moves and been sold on for a profit which seems to be Chelsea's 'philosophy' currently. £26m for Lukaku was an offer to good to refuse, Bamford will probably go on loan again this season, be a success, then get sold to Stoke or Palace or Swansea for £10mill. Izzy Brown is another who won't get a shot in the first team, watch him go on loan in Jan...

If you could excise the injured parts from the pair of them and stick what's left together you'd have one very good player. I suppose it all depends on the state of Costa's injuries but I can't see myself having either at the moment.

I don't think Falcao is good enough to take too many starts off Costa, but there's still the uncertainty, and because of that it's difficult to pick Costa over Hazard. You could have both of course though..

No, Costa will be first choice unless Falcao somehow rediscovers his old self (I don't believe that can happen). Mourinho has a first XI and sticks to it, and Costa will be in that XI.

I find it sad that Chelsea felt the need to get a likely finished Falcao, and Drogba last year, instead of giving game time to youngsters.

I actually think Costa is a lot MORE appealing this year. We know what he can do. He's fully rested for the first time since he's been in the league. He starts with a game where he scored a hattrick last year. And he's the sort of player who may explode early on then tire as the season wears on.

We know Mourinho loves his untouchables. Longer term, Falcao may get a few games, but it seems very unlikely that Costa will miss many minutes until then.

makes the decision of hazard vs costa an easy one

      hazard:

      pros:

top scoring fpl player last year
      Pens
      no threat of rotation
      no injury problems

      cons:

going to have a huge price tag

      Costa:

      pros:

will prob get 15-20 goals again

      cons:

      injury prone
      threat of rotation with falcao
      no set pieces
      YC magnet
      lack of BPS

Mourinho is one of those managers who likes to have a first choice XI. Costa will start every match as long as he's available, Falcao will get enough games from cups, maybe the festive fixture pile ups, and Costa being suspended or injured.

Just woke up my flat mate with surround sound cranked up whilst listening to the cricket. She's new to the country and said 'argh no, whats this, cricket? Does this go on all day?'
'Yes, the game goes for 5 weeks'.
          She doesn't actually believe me.

Not so sure, I doubt Cabaye will have all the free kicks after Punch's showing last season, especially after the quality of the ones against Man Utd/Man City/Liverpool. Have noticed Punch's free kicks all with left foot and Cabaye with right, so its a nice option and problem to have 🙂 (if he signs of course)

Thing is, he is just a kid really, who is being very poorly advised by people with their own agendas. I feel for him tbh. 2 more years of first team football at Liverpool is what he needs. I don't like the way that ex-Liverpool commentators on TV slag him off.

he's only 20. The ex liverpool players are too harsh on him. The blame lies mainly at the feet of the agent. He is chasing a huge wage but he has very high ambitions too.

      2. Somalion
        • 15 Years

There is a lot at the door of his agent, his family as well should be advising him. But at 20 years old, he does need to start developing some semblance of independent thought as well.

But yes, woeful advice going on.

    Potential midfield for new season:

    Hazard (11.5m), Sanchez (11.5m), Ritchie (7.0m), Cabaye (6.5m)

Need two mid-priced mids to be able to afford a decent squad which will include Hazard, Sanchez and Aguero... Could Walcott fill in for Sanchez for considerably less we think?

    1. AK ⭐
      • 13 Years
      10 years, 5 months ago

Ritchie at 7.0? I was hoping him to be at 6.0..

Hazard could be around 12.0 easily. Got Sanchez's price right imo.

As for Theo, yes he should fill in for Alexis, but it could always backfire.

Assuming you'd go with Rooney upfront?

      1. Heydudes13
        • 14 Years

        Feck Rooney.

Ritchie got 14 goals and 17 assists or something ridiculous last season, can expect his price to be a little higher than usual for promoted players.

This year's gonna be tougher with none of the big boys of last year leaving.

Fenerbahce are confident of completing a deal to sign Manchester United striker Robin van Persie, according to Sky sources.

The Turkish club's director Guiliano Terraneo travelled to London to discuss a potential deal with United chiefs for the 31-year-old Netherlands striker, who has one year left on his contract at Old Trafford.

Danny Rose looking mighty tempting with the signing of Alderweireld confirmed. A price of 5.5 (optimistic) and he is straight in

The thing is, his own marauding detracts from his defensive output. I still think they need an outstanding DM performance, from Bentaleb or someone else, in order to protect the CBs when the full backs go awol.

bentaleb will continue to grow. Ask any spurs fan and they are content with him as defensive mid.

Levy's scouts basically see who other teams are interested in and then go after him. Dont be surprised if they go after Clasie now. Like you said, Bentaleb and Mason don't provide enough protection for their defence

I would complain but I was enjoying the tennis chat the other day so it seems a little hypocritical.

Why? The game hasn't started yet, there is nothing to talk about.
