After numerous weeks of speculation, Chelsea finally announced the season-long loan acquisition of Radamel Falcao from French outfit Monaco last Friday.

Prior to the agreement, Jose Mourinho confirmed he was keen to bring the Colombian to Stamford Bridge in spite of a disastrous temporary spell at Old Trafford last term:

“If I can help Falcao reach his level again, I will do it. It hurts me that people in England think that the real Falcao is the one we saw at Manchester United.”

The History

Born in Santa Marta, Colombia, Falcao started out at second division side Lanceros Boyaca, earning his senior debut for the club at the age of 13. He spent two seasons at the Tunja-based club, netting one goal in eight matches. Falcao then moved to Argentina to sign for top tier outfit River Plate in February 2001.

After being handed his first start for the full squad in in the 2005/06 season, Falcao went on to notch seven goals in 11 appearances. Ligament damage to Falcao’s right knee restricted him to just 20 league appearances (1033 minutes) in the following campaign, yet the clinical Colombian recovered to chalk up 24 league goals and five assists across the subsequent two campaigns.

Falcao then plotted a course to Europe, penning a deal with Porto for a €4 million fee. He finished his first season at the Dragons as the league’s second-highest scorer, registering 25 goals and seven assists in 28 league outings. The next campaign proved to be similarly profitable, as Falcao tallied 16 goals and four assists in 22 league outings while also setting a new record for goals (17) in the Europa League.

Atletico Madrid paid €40 million to sign Falcao in the summer of 2011, making him the club’s record transfer. He enjoyed two hugely successful campaigns with Rojiblancos, recording 52 goals and five assists in 68 outings, and scooping two trophies (Europa League and Copa del Rey).

Falcao chose to sign for Monaco in May 2013, yet his debut season in Ligue 1 was hamstrung by thigh and knee injuries, meaning he only mustered nine goals in 17 league outings. After sitting out six months of action with a knee complaint, Falcao played in the first three fixtures of the 2014/15 campaign, before Manchester United snapped him up on a £6 million loan deal. He struggled to make an impact at Old Trafford, bagging four goals and five assists in 26 appearances (14 starts).

On the international stage, Falcao has registered 25 goals in 61 appearances and recently became his country’s highest-ever scorer after netting in a friendly against Costa Rica last month.

The Prospects

Given that Mourinho started every league match last season with a 4-2-3-1 formation, it’s fair to say that the Blues’ new striker faces a tough task to nail down a regular role over the campaign ahead.

Clearly, Diego Costa – who finished third in the scoring charts (20 goals) despite his injury travails – will remain as the first-choice frontman, limiting Falcao’s opportunities. Nonetheless, Costa’s ongoing hamstring issues and penchant for incurring the referee’s wrath is an issue that his manager has to address.

Costa started just 24 league outings last term (missing eight matches through injury and four through suspension) allowed Didier Drogba and Loic Remy to earn eight and six league starts respectively. With Drogba now gone, it’s no surprise that Mourinho delved into the market to acquire a quality back-up in his pursuit of consecutive titles.

With the likes of Palace and West Ham linked with a move for Remy, Mourinho’s shopping spree could well continue, with the Blues reportedly keen on Charlie Austin as a replacement should the Frenchman depart. Either way, it seems likely that Falcao will start the season as Chelsea’s third-choice forward, with minutes off the bench the likeliest scenario over the initial stages, at least.

If Falcao does find some rhythm, it would certainly afford Mourinho the luxury of exercising more caution with Costa’s minutes. Should that be the case, Eden Hazard’s claims as the prime route into Chelsea’s attack would be strengthened further, given that PFA Player of the Year started every league match for the champions in 2014/15.

Although the calibre of Chelsea’s top Fantasy assets renders them almost fixture proof, it’s worth nothing that the London club face a tough start to the new campaign. Beyond a home opener against Swansea City, Mourinho’s troops embark on a challenging road schedule (mci, wba, eve) and a visit from Arsenal within the first six Gameweeks. It’s unlikely to discourage investment in Chelsea’s big-hitters, though, particularly when other high-priced recruits like Sergio Aguero and Alexis Sanchez have question marks against their availability for Gameweek 1 by virtue of their involvement in the final of the Copa America.

You should, I think the character development and writing is phenomenal. I'd put The Wire as the best show ever, and probably The Sopranos second, but I rate Six Feet Under higher than Breaking Bad. Had me an emotional wreck by the end.

          good to hear.

I got a bit of that with Mad Men but powered through and still liked it. On style over substance I certainly found that with Hannibal & Boardwalk Empire

@Doolittle - the first season isn't a great indication of Mad Men's quality. It's a weak start, imo. Mad Men doesn't get really good until further on, imo (series 3 and 4), PF was right to power through.

Is Lily on pinterest? You should distract her with wedding things on there for a while, if not, while you enjoy these shows 😉 Tom's been through the entirety Star Wars in the time I've spent going through things on there. 😀

She's not on Pinterest, but I can distract her when Eastenders is on, then she can binge watch them on iPlayer while I watch Mad Men.

She's actually quite good for watching good shows, she adored The Sopranos, Six Feet Under and Breaking Bad (she's still refusing to watch The Wire after seeing the first episode, she doesn't believe me that it becomes the best show ever).

Mad Men is terrific. Give it another try, if you can. My wife and I binge-watched the entire series last winter, caught up, and then watched the final 7 episodes during their recent live run. Trust me, it is absolutely heavy (heavy) substance. If you like Breaking Bad, etc., you will see the same depth (and IMO, and the prevailing critcs') even more depth in Mad Men. The layers of drama, wrapped around the slick Madison Ave scene, are really interesting. I cannot recommend this show enough -- it is one of the best ever (okay, advertising sales pitch over).

OMG. It is so good. The layers. Don Draper. Who is he? What will happen to him?. Those questions alone has multiple dimensions. Let alone all of the women, and how they are treated, evolve, etc. His character all by himself is on another level of television.

Aside: This is the only high falutin TV show my (80-ish) mom won't watch because she was a secretary in NYC in that era, and she says that she experienced that kind of behavior every day, and says it's too close to home (!).

Ah sure. The Wire is one show I have not yet seen, and it is on our list.

I am currently watching a lesser quality show on Showtime, with the same lead (Dominic West), "The Affair." We are hooked because it takes place on Montauk (Long Island beach town) where we have vacationed on a few weekends. It is pretty soap opera level stuff, but is another of our current shows that happens to have the same Wire lead.

With regards to your taste, a new show in the States called "Mr. Robot" will be to your liking, I think. It is creepy cool, and has a high tech plot.

Totally agree on Six feet under. I watched it when it was in its live run on HBO a while ago, and so loved it. I am now an American on a binge of watching European crime dramas, and these are so good:

      Broadchurch
      The Killing (Canadian, I think)
      The Fall
      The Missing
      Top of the Lake
      The Bridge (Danish version)

I have finished all of these in the last few months with my wife, and we are now in the midst of the The Bridge.

Currently, also watching whatever is in first run on HBO and Sho. Recent series that finished were Nurse Jackie (forever), Happyish (Steve Coogan), and Veep plus Silicon Valley. I like Brink (brand new) but have not watched Ballers with Duane Johnson yet.

Aquarius with David Duchovny is a good crime drama.

Master of Sex starts soon, and that is a very good show.

Right! I watched the North American version of The Killing. It is Canadian, I think, but maybe USA. IMDB will solve that riddle. The same Danish woman wrote both versions though, so sorta makes it all the same.

I don't usually read the comments before I click a link. And even at 0:45 there's a lot of useless footage of him hugging team mates and lying around on the grass.

The rest of the video is fine, and I'm glad you posted it. I just don't understand why people who presumably want their videos to get views use all that time before getting to the stuff 98% percent of the people who clicked the link came to see.

Few decent options available for Palace up front I reckon:

Remy - worked with Pardew before and is another Frenchy to work with Cabaye
Campbell - linked with Palace/ Newcastle last year

Campbell - rumoured with a move to Besiktas, but was linked with Palace/ Newcastle last year. Seems available for only £3.5mil

N'doye - good end to the season with Hull, and could want a return to the PL. Pardew likes his Senegalese strikers

Not really a striker though. Played there for Costa Rica as they had few options, but played wide in Turkey, Spain, and in his few appearances for Arsenal.

If uninjured then Aguero over Lewa and not sold on Kosc. I imagine Hummels would be one of the CBs instead? With Fabregas in the North side I think Caz isn't guaranteed at all. Reus will have to get in as well, but tough as he's competing with Hazard.

To be honest, I think it'd be a bit mental to organise, so many good players on both sides.

No way should anyone ever pick Bravo over Buffon. Matuidi?? Really?? Not even the best mid in PSG. Lewandowski is not Aguero and Cazorla is nowhere near to being good enough for that place,

        1. Wilshere Knowledge
          • 12 Years

Buffon is not the keeper he once was. Bravo voted best keeper in Copa, and has been nothing short of sublime for Barca last season. Comfortably top 5 GK in the world nowadays.

There is no better b2b player focused defensively than Matuidi in world football. Would perfectly compliment Modric in a midfield 4.

Lewandwoski is different to Aguero, not worse. Can compete in the air, and links better. With Robben and Hazard, link play would be vital.

Cazorla is a wonderful player, and better than the insanely overrated Fabregas.

You have Iniesta as a DM...

          1. il Brutto
            • 12 Years

Buffon definitely is still the real deal. Don't get caught on simplistic arguments that he is old and past it. Just had his best season in years only Neuer was better than him last season. Matuidi is nowhere near Verratti, Busquets, Vidal or Pogba and the list could go on. I agree it's a tough call between Lewandowski and Aguero.

Cazorla is a wonderful player but hugely overrated by Arsenal fans. Fabregas is the first choice for Spain as well.

Iniesta is not my DM. He would be the furthest forward out of my three midfielders.

            1. Wilshere Knowledge
              • 12 Years
              10 years, 5 months ago

I'm not saying he is completely past it, just that he isn't as good as he was, and not better than Bravo. The direction of his parries has noticeably declined IMO. Was evident in the CL, and noticeable at last years World Cup.

Matuidi is a completely different player to Verratti and Busquets. Vidal and Pogba are similar, but I put Matuidi in because whilst Vidal and Pogba are b2b mids who are more focused on attacking, Matuidi is a b2b more focused on defending. I thought I needed a defensive player in midfield to compliment Modric controlling midfield, and had enough creativity with James, Messi and Modric.

Fabregas may be ahead of Cazorla for Spain, but they play different systems, and Cazorla has only recently started playing in the pivot. Ozil included Cazorla amongst the best players he had played with in a team that included im as the only Arsenal player, and omitted Sanchez all together. Monreal also included Cazorla amonst the best players he had played with in a team largely made up of Spanish players.

Fair enough on Iniesta, but that leaves Modric and Pogba in the pivot, and that pivot doesn't seem to have any defensive balance either.

Fair enough. Difference in tastes it seems. I'd go more defensive for a team to play the whole season but for an All-star game it's all about the skill and fancy.

For sure. He has scored very consistently barring that one mad season. I reckon he could be 9m after last season.

I still wouldn't get him unless Aguero gets injured though. 🙂

Yep, is he good enough to be in a top CL team? No - so he more than likely wouldn't be in a title winning side in one of the biggest leagues. Why not travel and play in different leagues in which he has a good chance of picking up a trophy or two?

Does anyone think that a rotation transfer could work? Admittedly it is a planned transfer which could prove vital but by having a quick glance at the fixtures it could prove profitable.

If you take SUN WHU for the first 11 fixtures, it would read something along the lines of lei NOR BOU avl NEW bou NOR sun wba NEW wat

Then, by transferring WHU for SWA, the next 12 fixtures read nor BOU STK LEI WAT WHU WBA cpl AVL SUN WAT BOU

That should take you well into the Jan WC stage at least.

    Also you would face
0 from last years top 8
    2 from top 10
    11 from 11-17th
    10 from newly promoted sides
    15 homes from 23 (65%)

Looking at how the fixtures panned out last year, swapping BOU for HUL, WAT for BUR and NOR for QPR, the GK rotation would have scored 9 7 7 7 6 3 7 3 2 6 2 3 2 3 7 6 3 6 4 1 2 6 1. Meaning 103pts from 23 GWs (170 38GW avg). In these fixtures, 11/23 clean sheets were kept, and the opposition scored more than once on only 3 occasions.

Am I being hopeful in thinking that Panti would come in at 4.5? 10.0 is surely too much for a keeper roatation, is it?

I've always tried to do this, to a degree, but not planned as much as skirt the first 3-6 weeks for finest fixtures then wildcard for the fixtures leading to the next window.

Yeah at the moment I'm hoping to get to around GW11 without WC but will be a task. Hoping to not use it so early this time anyway. GW11 this year seems to be the point when most fixtures change, especially for everton

Bookmarking this for later but SUN/WHA could be an expensive pairing considering Adrian was £5m-£5.5m by the end of the season. Im expecting Pants to be at least £5m, could even be £5.5m if he is confirmed their primary GK. Switching to SWA later on again is going to be £5.5m at least for Fabianski, which puts the price of the pair at £11-£12m which is too much for rotation

            • 14 Years

Yeah the main worry is the price. All will be good teams for a reasonable amount of cs but i think that 9.5mil will be easy 10mil would be difficult now I have seen the nice run they show. Cech, MUN GK and other rotations could prove better value coming in to the season, just have to wait

Falcao and Costa already played together.
I think Mourinho has a two new options now:

1 - Play 2 up front against weaker defense that plays/sats deep.
2 - Play Costa on one flank from outside in.

    Falcao@CHE gona surprise a few...

I think they'll share the goals, personally

They'll be fairly high-priced and between injuries and rotation we'll never be fully happy waiting on the lineups every saturday

Hazard/ Fabregas is more appealing to me as FPL options
