After numerous weeks of speculation, Chelsea finally announced the season-long loan acquisition of Radamel Falcao from French outfit Monaco last Friday.

Prior to the agreement, Jose Mourinho confirmed he was keen to bring the Colombian to Stamford Bridge in spite of a disastrous temporary spell at Old Trafford last term:

“If I can help Falcao reach his level again, I will do it. It hurts me that people in England think that the real Falcao is the one we saw at Manchester United.”

The History

Born in Santa Marta, Colombia, Falcao started out at second division side Lanceros Boyaca, earning his senior debut for the club at the age of 13. He spent two seasons at the Tunja-based club, netting one goal in eight matches. Falcao then moved to Argentina to sign for top tier outfit River Plate in February 2001.

After being handed his first start for the full squad in in the 2005/06 season, Falcao went on to notch seven goals in 11 appearances. Ligament damage to Falcao’s right knee restricted him to just 20 league appearances (1033 minutes) in the following campaign, yet the clinical Colombian recovered to chalk up 24 league goals and five assists across the subsequent two campaigns.

Falcao then plotted a course to Europe, penning a deal with Porto for a €4 million fee. He finished his first season at the Dragons as the league’s second-highest scorer, registering 25 goals and seven assists in 28 league outings. The next campaign proved to be similarly profitable, as Falcao tallied 16 goals and four assists in 22 league outings while also setting a new record for goals (17) in the Europa League.

Atletico Madrid paid €40 million to sign Falcao in the summer of 2011, making him the club’s record transfer. He enjoyed two hugely successful campaigns with Rojiblancos, recording 52 goals and five assists in 68 outings, and scooping two trophies (Europa League and Copa del Rey).

Falcao chose to sign for Monaco in May 2013, yet his debut season in Ligue 1 was hamstrung by thigh and knee injuries, meaning he only mustered nine goals in 17 league outings. After sitting out six months of action with a knee complaint, Falcao played in the first three fixtures of the 2014/15 campaign, before Manchester United snapped him up on a £6 million loan deal. He struggled to make an impact at Old Trafford, bagging four goals and five assists in 26 appearances (14 starts).

On the international stage, Falcao has registered 25 goals in 61 appearances and recently became his country’s highest-ever scorer after netting in a friendly against Costa Rica last month.

The Prospects

Given that Mourinho started every league match last season with a 4-2-3-1 formation, it’s fair to say that the Blues’ new striker faces a tough task to nail down a regular role over the campaign ahead.

Clearly, Diego Costa – who finished third in the scoring charts (20 goals) despite his injury travails – will remain as the first-choice frontman, limiting Falcao’s opportunities. Nonetheless, Costa’s ongoing hamstring issues and penchant for incurring the referee’s wrath is an issue that his manager has to address.

Costa started just 24 league outings last term (missing eight matches through injury and four through suspension) allowed Didier Drogba and Loic Remy to earn eight and six league starts respectively. With Drogba now gone, it’s no surprise that Mourinho delved into the market to acquire a quality back-up in his pursuit of consecutive titles.

With the likes of Palace and West Ham linked with a move for Remy, Mourinho’s shopping spree could well continue, with the Blues reportedly keen on Charlie Austin as a replacement should the Frenchman depart. Either way, it seems likely that Falcao will start the season as Chelsea’s third-choice forward, with minutes off the bench the likeliest scenario over the initial stages, at least.

If Falcao does find some rhythm, it would certainly afford Mourinho the luxury of exercising more caution with Costa’s minutes. Should that be the case, Eden Hazard’s claims as the prime route into Chelsea’s attack would be strengthened further, given that PFA Player of the Year started every league match for the champions in 2014/15.

Although the calibre of Chelsea’s top Fantasy assets renders them almost fixture proof, it’s worth nothing that the London club face a tough start to the new campaign. Beyond a home opener against Swansea City, Mourinho’s troops embark on a challenging road schedule (mci, wba, eve) and a visit from Arsenal within the first six Gameweeks. It’s unlikely to discourage investment in Chelsea’s big-hitters, though, particularly when other high-priced recruits like Sergio Aguero and Alexis Sanchez have question marks against their availability for Gameweek 1 by virtue of their involvement in the final of the Copa America.

Will the 15/16 season be the most competitive season in Premier League history?

Chelsea, Arsenal and Man City will all be battling for the top spot. Chelsea already have the squad. Arsenal have a good squad to challenge already. And Man City will probably be acquiring a couple of top quality players.

Liverpool, Man United and Tottenham will be battling for the last top four position. With Man United more than likely coming out on top. Liverpool have already been spending. And Man United look likely to be spending a lot of money this summer. Tottenham have brought in Toby Alderweireld, who will strengthen their defence, and Kane will be playing for a whole season.

Southampton, Swansea, Stoke, Crystal Palace, Everton, West Ham and West Brom will all be battling for a top half finish. Southampton, Swansea, Stoke and West Ham have already picked up a few decent players in this transfer window. Crystal Palace thrived under Pardew last year and may be snapping up Cabaye. Everton already have the quality to battle for a top ten finish. And Tony Pulis is a great manager to get his team battling for a mid table spot.

Leicester and Newcastle both have new managers. Dick Advocaat done a decent job at keeping Sunderland in the Premier League last year. Maybe he can help push them on? Tim Sherwood got Aston Villa firing up at the end of last season. Can Tim and Benteke fire Villa up the table?

Norwich have a lot of the players in the squad still from the last time they were in the Premier League. Will that be enough to keep them up?

Watford and Bournemouth look likely to battle it out to keep them in the top flight. But could they surprise us and do a decent job?

I'm saying Liverpool and Spurs will battle for top 4 but not achieve it. Top spot being a 4-horse race. HTH

Yeah, they could do. But I'm just saying I think it's out of City, Chelsea and Arsenal to win the league. United will be finishing 4th minimum. I don't see United putting that much pressure on whoever finishes 1st.

Yeah. I was mainly talking about the transfers already done. The main but I thought of to write that was the fact there's quite a lot of decent signings being made by the mid table clubs already. I can see a real fierce battle happening around there.

I think there will be a big gap between 4th and 5th. And it'll be hard to get a more competitive relegation battle. Just needs more teams to be in the battle come the final day.

I hope so, recently there seems to be one rubbish season followed by a great one. How well Arsenal do is key I think, if they can mount a genuine title challenge then we could have a 3 horse race with Chelsea and City (presuming City strengthen this summer). Then, it may cause Utd to up their game.

I do think though that the "4th place battle" may be a non-contest. I think there could be a gap with Utd and the rest.

With current squads I'd say Chelsea will win the league, but Arsenal and City are only a couple of new additions away from being in with a shout of claiming top spot. Also depends whether Chelsea sign anyone else or not.

At the other end, I reckon Norwich will stay up comfortably, Bournemouth will start well but then have a second half of season slump. I can see Watford being relegation certs. On paper they have a good squad, but they seem to have players and managers coming and going constantly with little stability in contrast to Bournemouth's more settled approach - and I think that'll be what'll cost them.

Leicester to go down for me, second season syndrome. New manager means the Pearson momentum may not be continued, plus the off field events surrounding Pearson's departure may have a detrimental effect on their season.

If Villa lose Benteke I can see them occupying the third relegation spot, if they can keep him I reckon Bournemouth will go down instead.

All of the top four have squads that can win the league. Chelsea were the only one of these teams to hit the ground running last season and that made their winning margin seem bigger. It will all come down to who can consistently grind out the wins.

Southampton have done quite well out of Celtic with Wanyama and Forster.

I have a feeling you may be adding Virgil Van Dijk to that list. Rko seems to be a fan.

Wouldnt be suprised if the same deal was in place as we had for Forster where they are allowed to compete in champions league qualifiers then move on.

Just a question really, where is the United or even City optimism coming from? Particularly with United I saw very, very little last season to suggest this season will result in a massive leap to all of a sudden 'competing on all fronts'. City need some/a lot of work too. Arsenal I honestly think with some top quality additions can run Chelsea very close, or even win it, but not as is yet. Everyone else is so far behind it would take serious movement to keep pace with Chelsea.

I agree on Man U. Seems mostly from Man U fans though.

Man City should compete because they have the best 9, the best 10, potentially the best CM if Yaya can get his head right, potentially the best centre back if Kompany can get his head right, and very good players around + money to invest.

Indeed that's a fair point, but there is still some work to be done on their squad and ifs about them really if they want to properly challenge, they'll be up there I'd say, but it wouldn't be all that surprising if at some point they cocked it up.

One of the other concerns I'd have is it seems Pellegrini is only going to be there until the end of the season when City will look to Pep probably, you'd surely have to question some of the squads desire?

Absolutely. They have the ingredients, but can they come together?

I think if the ingredients come together perfectly, they'll win the league. If they come together at all, they'll compete.

The thing is that can be said of a lot of teams, especially considering it isn't always about the best players/squad on paper but the best team, backroom staff and all. Lots of ifs, and I think it more likely they'll coast it out for this season, next season should be much better if they make the right changes.

I don't think any team in the league has the quality of players as Man City.

We know they aren't the best 'team', like how Chile or Atletico Madrid are better than the sum of their players, but I do think they have the best individual quality.

That's what I'm saying though, some immense individuals but that won't necessarily get you over the finish line and it seems at this point the squad needs a bit of a rebuild to supplement the core.

I'd disagree that the team needs a rebuild. I think just one or two players and a minor change in mentality and they'll be not a good team like last year, but a great one. (PL team)

They won the league twice with Yaya in the pivot, with him rightfully being considered one of their best players.

I don't think it's of much surprise that he had a relatively poor season after his brother died.

He had one beast mode season, in which he spent most of it playing in an advanced midfield position. 😆 You must have a short memory.

I've seen numerous City fans not liking the idea of Yaya in a midfield two for the coming season, stressing that it's a potential weakness when facing quality, energetic midfields as they could get outplayed and overrun. I'd agree with this.

He didn't play as an advanced midfielder... I remember because I never bought him because of his position. He would occasionally be moved further forward in latter stages of games, but most of his goals were from deep + set pieces.

He was in PFA team of the year in 11/12 as well as 13/14.

He certainly has his defensive weaknesses, but no more so than Fabregas.

If you think he hasn't been one of their best players ever since arriving, I'd suggest you have a short memory. 😉

I don't think that, hence why I haven't said it. The season in which he scored 20+ goals, he was playing #10 position, with Silva tucking in from a wide right or left position.

Anyway, basically they are all awesome, if they can all get their heads right? Brilliant 😀 Despite Kompany being truly awful and injury prone for a good two years now? 😕

We've had this City discussion before. I remember reminding you how they only hit a good run of form at the end of the season, when the pressure was off. Hardly convincing imo.

They played 4222 with Negredo/Dzeko partnering Aguero.

Agüero missed a large portion of the season through injury and Negredo was only starting games in the early stages of the season. 😉 As soon as his purple patch ended around Christmas, he struggled to get on the pitch, even as a sub.

Anyway, take out Agüero, Silva and the squad is pretty average imo. I find it laughable that you've stated above that their squad doesn't need a rebuild. 😕 Even City fans disagree with you.

CM - Yaya, Fernando, Fernandinho. Average.
Wide options? - Nasri, Navas. 😆 Would explain why they're searching for 2 attacking mids....

In his half season at Newcastle, he was very attacking in a CM role. Set Piece duty would make him very very appealing. I know Pards is a big fan of Puncheon though. Pre season should give us an indication about who gets the majority of free kicks and corners

Yeah. And set piece lists Jedinak on pens but from what i recall he was dropped and wasn't getting in the side from january. So be interesting to see who has spot kicks if Jedinak isn't a starter again

Pardew said something about Jedinak's attitude/form so he is far from a certainty. Murray was taking pens towards the end of the season. If Austin signs, id bet he will take them

                  Austin?

                  I'd wager 7.5-8

He'd have to have pens for me to consider him, wherever he winds up

I think 7.5 would be the most i'd be willing to pay, particularly if he's a 3rd striker. But would no doubt get him during a run of good fixtures if he's on pens.

that translates into how many points? Maybe 24 assuming he scores and/or is on the field for every penalty won.

Palace do have a decent start tbf and after last season I do have a soft spot for him

Leaning towards Sakho as my 3rd striker atm though

        • 12 Years

        I'd say attacking wide midfielder.

I'd describe wingers as those who try to beat defenders and get crosses in, like Bolasie, Ox etc.

I think wingers are getting rarer as possession has become such an important part of the game.

Personally I donot even think that having a good squad wins you leagues keeping them fit does. The team who's back line remains injury free for the season seem to win the league . A injury free or very few injuries in a season are enough for a team to win the title .
I believe that if you can keep key players fit its enough to win although easier said that done .
This year Chelsea back line remained injuryfree while injuries in attacking departments can be easy to replace Madrid's downfall this season was due to loss of Modric in the mid season but if want to be the best team you need to cope of up with injuries.

The big question this season is will Chelsea back four be injury free ? I read that hazard played every game this season (subs) its a sign of a excellent player to remain injury free but what happen if he gets injured ?
      sorry Chelsea fans 😛

would mancity have lost the title if aguero had not been injuries in the best of his form ?

        If's and but's..

Chelsea has atleast 2 options in every back four position which are viable in the Prem

RB; Azpilicuetta, Ivanovic (Kalas to a lesser extent)
        CB: Zouma, Terry Cahill, Ivanovic,
        LB: Luis, Azpi

So it would take 3 key injuries to significantly mess up the formation
