After yesterday’s launch of the Fantasy Premier League (FPL) game, our Projections and Rate My Team tool have both been updated with initial numbers in our Members Area and are now live. Our members can now get access to these areas via the menu bar and start putting both to use in their pre-season selections.

We will be tweaking this numbers on a daily basis as new players enter the game and as the pre-season reveals more on likely starting lineups and roles.

Once again this term, the projections are based on the Rate My Team statistical model, developed by “Professor” Chris Atkinson.

Below you’ll find an FAQ on our Projections and Rate My Team, plus links to movies with Chris that talk you through the functionality of Rate My Team and even the methods that go into building and maintaining it week on week.

Access to these tools requires Membership and these are available for the pre-season price of £12.50 (RRP £15.00). Registered users can upgrade their accounts via this link, while new users can register as members here.

View this page for full details on all our benefits for Members.

How do I use the Projections?
Crucially, these tables can be used as another opinion-former when comparing players. Every player is rated for goals, assists, clean sheets etc based on values created by the “Rate My Team” statistical model – the values returned for each player are the expected values in accordance with its calculations.

A good way of thinking about them is to consider them average values for each player. If the season was played out 500 times, the values you’ll find in these projection tables are the average that the model would expect the player to score.

One of the most useful aspects of the Projections is the value column. You can sort by this to find the best value (Points Per FPL Million) delivered by players in each position.

With tables for the season and the opening six Gameweeks, you can get a view on long-term and short-term returns and value.

What are these values based on?
The Rate My Team statistical model is a complex beast – it uses historical data stretching back a number of seasons and, of course, specific player and team data. When generating the player values, the model looks at the specific fixture in each Gameweek, assessing the strength of both teams before calculating the likely team goals scored and how these goals will translate to specific player stats. The probability of a player taking part in the match is also a key ingredient – factors such as rotation, injuries and suspensions are taken into account.

When will these Projections be updated?
It’s likely that we’ll update the projections almost every day up until the season kick-off. As we get more data on likely first choice lineups and as the transfer market moves to cast doubt over starters, we will adapt and tweak the model accordingly. A new player, particularly if we anticipate they will threaten a starting role, can have a major impact on the projections and Rate My Team, influencing the projected output of his new team-mates.

The projections will also be updated throughout the season, providing a week by week view of what the model expects each player to score for the remaining Gameweeks to help guide your selections and transfers. We normally update on both Tuesday and Friday in order to build the latest team news into the numbers.

What is Rate My Team?
Rate My team is a statistical model built specifically to assess every player in the Premier League and return their expected values for Fantasy Premier League (FPL) points in a given Gameweek. The system is a complex and thorough one which, of course, plots the probabilities of a player’s time on the pitch, their expected number of goals, assists, bonus points, yellow and red cards, clean sheets, own goals, goals conceded and saves. The strength of the opponent they are facing in a given Gameweek is also crucial; so every team has an attacking, defensive rating, every player a probability of playing a given match with injuries, suspensions and international absence factored in.

How Can It Help Me?
If you’re a member you can use the Rate My Team tool in a number of ways. Firstly, you can use it as a projections tool to predict what specific players will score, on average, over the next X number of Gameweeks. As you’ll see in the movie below, you have a players table that can be filtered by position or FPL cost and which can be extended to show any number of Gameweeks. You can also sort on “Value” to find those players projected to offer the best points per million return.

However, this is just one part of the functionality. Once the season starts, Rate My Team can also analyse your existing FPL lineup, recommend captains, vice captains, your bench and order of substitutes and allow you to model your future transfers. In the second “My Team” movie below, you can preview this functionality in full.

Rather than post your team in the comments on the main site, our members can now enter their FPL code in Rate My Team and it will immediately offer you an appraisal of your squad. Using Rate my Team you can transfer players in and out of your squad and get an immediate appraisal of the impact of that transfer.

    Hart, Speroni
    Mertesacker, Moreno, Cedric, Richards, Coates
    Cesc, Mata, Ozil, Handerson, Albrighton
    Rooney, Benteke, Lukaku

I`m not sure about Moreno, Cesc, Albrighton and Lukaku.

Mings above Francis in the projections? Not sure if I agree with that.

    Last season:
    Francis - 1 goal, 6 assists, 8ycs
    Mings - 1 goal, 4 assists, 11ycs

Better off backing the player with established relationships on the pitch, surely? Ritchie and Francis work well together on the right, and Mings is a new signing...

Going by last season, certainly not. The question is whether you think two of the big guns(Kun/Costa/Rooney) will kick it off.

So this is my first draft for the season. How does it look? 🙂

    Panti - Speroni
    Ivanovic - Koscienly - Cresswell - Bassong - Richards
    Silva - Fab - Özil - Cabaye - Wanyama
    Costa - Lukaku - Deeney

    0 mil itb.

    GK:
Panti will play most fixtures, with Speroni covering the toughest ones at game week 7, 15, 17, 18 and possibly 19.

    Defence:
Ivanovic (Or possibly Terry) and Kos (Or possibly Merte) will play pretty much always play if they are injury free. Cresswell will play most games with Richards and Bassong being able to cover for any of the 3 more expensive defenders if needed. Richards and Bassong could be switched to another 9 mil combo.

    Midfield:
Not much to comment on. Özil might be upgraded to Walcott depending on preseason. Wanyama on the bench. Silva to Yaya and Fab to Mata is also a option.

    Forwards:
All 3 will play every match if injury free, the only problem is getting Aguero when he is ready to play 90 minutes.

My only worries is not having Hazard, Sanchez, Aguero later on and Man U cover.

Is it worth risking going with Benteke with a move away from Villa looking likely? Don't particularly wanna use a transfer on getting him out.

Would a move away significantly lessen his appeal? I'm sure if he moved he'd have assurances about first team football.

      Hi Thomass.

Pretty good team in my eyes. I'd probably spend a little less on the defence, Coleman can be changed to a £4.5m defender and Davies to a £4.0m given the strength of the other 4.

I'd upgrade Costa to Aguero with the excess, maybe go Deeney instead of Bojan. I don't like Mané personally at £8.0m and would spend an extra £0.5m to get a United midfielder.

I'm wildcarding early but avoiding Costa and hazard for first few weeks, I'd work them in if I wanted them. City and west brom away are such poor attacking fixtures.

Those considering going without Aguero are mental, imo.

Kun and Hazard are must-haves. And I'm not buying this 'slow starter' thing that's going around.

    1. Doolittle
      • 13 Years
      10 years, 5 months ago

No one is a must have. Kun and Hazard may be top scorers, but who are you going without to accommodate both? Costa? Walcott? Ozil? Benteke? There are heaps of players there who can punish you.

People get blinded by individual big hitters and forget that having them can deprive you of points elsewhere.

      1. davies
        • 11 Years

Costa hasn't even entered my thoughts, if I'm honest. And the others, well, let's wait and see.

I guess last year we were lucky to have the budget players scoring so well it allowed us to afford these luxuries.

        1. Doolittle
          • 13 Years

          My current team:

          Pantilimon/Hamer
          Ivan/Kos/Cedric/Morgan/Francis
          Fabregas/Ozil/Milner/Ritchie/Albrighton
          Aguero/Benteke/Sakho

          0.5ITB

Where there can I downgrade by 2 to accommodate Hazard? I could do Sakho to Deeney maybe, and Kos to a 5 defender, but will Hazard outscore Fabregas enough in the first 4-5GWs to justify that? The only other way I can see is to do Aguero to Costa.

I prefer your first option, mate.

Like I said below, for the first 6 or so weeks, Hazard can be covered. Hopefully Fabregas is the man to do so - like last season.

        This.

Why no love for Hazard? Do we have any doubt he will be in the top 3 players in points come end of season? Looking at last season alone as an indication that he starts the season slow isn't so wise imo. If he starts strong and he has the opening fixture to do so, there could be trouble to fit him in. Any thoughts?
