After yesterday’s launch of the Fantasy Premier League (FPL) game, our Projections and Rate My Team tool have both been updated with initial numbers in our Members Area and are now live. Our members can now get access to these areas via the menu bar and start putting both to use in their pre-season selections.

We will be tweaking this numbers on a daily basis as new players enter the game and as the pre-season reveals more on likely starting lineups and roles.

Once again this term, the projections are based on the Rate My Team statistical model, developed by “Professor” Chris Atkinson.

Below you’ll find an FAQ on our Projections and Rate My Team, plus links to movies with Chris that talk you through the functionality of Rate My Team and even the methods that go into building and maintaining it week on week.

Access to these tools requires Membership and these are available for the pre-season price of £12.50 (RRP £15.00). Registered users can upgrade their accounts via this link, while new users can register as members here.

View this page for full details on all our benefits for Members.

How do I use the Projections?
Crucially, these tables can be used as another opinion-former when comparing players. Every player is rated for goals, assists, clean sheets etc based on values created by the “Rate My Team” statistical model – the values returned for each player are the expected values in accordance with its calculations.

A good way of thinking about them is to consider them average values for each player. If the season was played out 500 times, the values you’ll find in these projection tables are the average that the model would expect the player to score.

One of the most useful aspects of the Projections is the value column. You can sort by this to find the best value (Points Per FPL Million) delivered by players in each position.

With tables for the season and the opening six Gameweeks, you can get a view on long-term and short-term returns and value.

What are these values based on?
The Rate My Team statistical model is a complex beast – it uses historical data stretching back a number of seasons and, of course, specific player and team data. When generating the player values, the model looks at the specific fixture in each Gameweek, assessing the strength of both teams before calculating the likely team goals scored and how these goals will translate to specific player stats. The probability of a player taking part in the match is also a key ingredient – factors such as rotation, injuries and suspensions are taken into account.

When will these Projections be updated?
It’s likely that we’ll update the projections almost every day up until the season kick-off. As we get more data on likely first choice lineups and as the transfer market moves to cast doubt over starters, we will adapt and tweak the model accordingly. A new player, particularly if we anticipate they will threaten a starting role, can have a major impact on the projections and Rate My Team, influencing the projected output of his new team-mates.

The projections will also be updated throughout the season, providing a week by week view of what the model expects each player to score for the remaining Gameweeks to help guide your selections and transfers. We normally update on both Tuesday and Friday in order to build the latest team news into the numbers.

What is Rate My Team?
Rate My team is a statistical model built specifically to assess every player in the Premier League and return their expected values for Fantasy Premier League (FPL) points in a given Gameweek. The system is a complex and thorough one which, of course, plots the probabilities of a player’s time on the pitch, their expected number of goals, assists, bonus points, yellow and red cards, clean sheets, own goals, goals conceded and saves. The strength of the opponent they are facing in a given Gameweek is also crucial; so every team has an attacking, defensive rating, every player a probability of playing a given match with injuries, suspensions and international absence factored in.

How Can It Help Me?
If you’re a member you can use the Rate My Team tool in a number of ways. Firstly, you can use it as a projections tool to predict what specific players will score, on average, over the next X number of Gameweeks. As you’ll see in the movie below, you have a players table that can be filtered by position or FPL cost and which can be extended to show any number of Gameweeks. You can also sort on “Value” to find those players projected to offer the best points per million return.

However, this is just one part of the functionality. Once the season starts, Rate My Team can also analyse your existing FPL lineup, recommend captains, vice captains, your bench and order of substitutes and allow you to model your future transfers. In the second “My Team” movie below, you can preview this functionality in full.

Rather than post your team in the comments on the main site, our members can now enter their FPL code in Rate My Team and it will immediately offer you an appraisal of your squad. Using Rate my Team you can transfer players in and out of your squad and get an immediate appraisal of the impact of that transfer.

Rate My Team – Under the Hood

Mark Mark created the beast. He's now looking to tame it.

    @Lucy

am currently minded to forgoe Hazard AND Aguero and start with Costa and Rooney

If I can save a transfer GW2 then come GW3 I can ditch Rooney and Costa and get in Kun and a slightly cheaper striker and still have Cesc and Mata/ADM/Depay

Did any of ye throw a few quid on O'Neill for the Leicester job when he was 10/1?

I didn't but fair play if ye did.

I think he's past it, myself. If he doesn't do well, he could tarnish his reputation and legacy at Leicester.

I'd like Hiddink with Cambiasso learning from him as a player/coach. Or, ideally, kept Nige.

He's nothing left with Ireland job. Almost no chance we'll qualify for the Euros.

They should have kept Pearson though. Forget his lack of personality, he kept them up and deserved a start to 15/16 season.

          Do you rate him?

Our owners are just sick of all the antics, I think. They're trying to get us into a global brand and European football (in a few years) and the Pearson name is damaging that.

Fab- Silva - Mesut - Bolassie - Bentaleb

    Benteke - Costa - Murray

There's a lot of risk there. I'd look to limit risk and also look at fixtures. The defence has a lot of 5.5-5m ish players. Also there's no Chelsea defence - many teams will have that. Also never plan for gwk 2...you never know what will happen. I'd get Sakho in from the off. Murray may not even start and his fixture isn't great either.

Here are the teams with good first five fixtures.

      BOU
      STO
      SOT
      SUN
      AVL
      LEI
      NOR
      SWA
      WHM
      TOT
      ARS
      MUN

Here are ones with poor fixtures

That looks much better...getting sure bets in. Key to a good start is cutting down on risk. Risks can pay off one week - but they never pay off over six weeks and so on.

Yaya, Sakho, Sanchez, Toby are all seasoned FPL scorers.

Try and focus on top clubs as well and use cheap slots for promoted sides. Looks like your team is coming along nicely.

I truly appreciate all the help it really means a lot, words can't describe :). I played last season as my first and I didn't do too well because quite frankly I had no idea what I was doing half my team didn't play the first few weeks and I took hits such as -16 points and such. I had no clue what I was doing. However, I hope things will be better this season thanks to your help and fellow members.

Ah I see. Yeah that one is Costa and Rooney vs Aguero and Benteke.

indeed but I'd say the former pair has the better opening fixtures and gives you a decent (c) option over the 1st 3 GWs

          Costa/Rooney/Costa

also gives you flexibilty as if Rooney looks worth keeping but Mata doesn't you can even swap Mata to say Milner and still have enough to get Aguero in for Costa

First RMT of the season, if anyone could offer any advice:

    Schmeichel/Butland
Ivanovic/Cresswell/Lescott (Targett while Clyne is out and WBA fixtures are poor)
    Walcott/Hazard/Yaya/Abdi
    Rooney/Lukaku/Benteke

Watford mid, on free-kicks. Advised that he could do well by those who know the team.

Clyne is out? You mean Bertrand? Clyne's at Liverpool.

Any bargains or should-haves in these categories?

    A) 4.5 defender
    B) 4.5-5.5 midfielder

I like Fletcher at 4.5mil, Wanyama has also been mentioned
I also like Redmond if you have the extra mil

Defender wise I'm struggling big time

    Hello all!

Question one... if you assume you are not going to use any of the bonus chips until the second half of the season then would the safest option for keepers not be Courtois + 4m?
