After yesterday’s launch of the Fantasy Premier League (FPL) game, our Projections and Rate My Team tool have both been updated with initial numbers in our Members Area and are now live. Our members can now get access to these areas via the menu bar and start putting both to use in their pre-season selections.

We will be tweaking this numbers on a daily basis as new players enter the game and as the pre-season reveals more on likely starting lineups and roles.

Once again this term, the projections are based on the Rate My Team statistical model, developed by “Professor” Chris Atkinson.

Below you’ll find an FAQ on our Projections and Rate My Team, plus links to movies with Chris that talk you through the functionality of Rate My Team and even the methods that go into building and maintaining it week on week.

Access to these tools requires Membership and these are available for the pre-season price of £12.50 (RRP £15.00). Registered users can upgrade their accounts via this link, while new users can register as members here.

View this page for full details on all our benefits for Members.

How do I use the Projections?
Crucially, these tables can be used as another opinion-former when comparing players. Every player is rated for goals, assists, clean sheets etc based on values created by the “Rate My Team” statistical model – the values returned for each player are the expected values in accordance with its calculations.

A good way of thinking about them is to consider them average values for each player. If the season was played out 500 times, the values you’ll find in these projection tables are the average that the model would expect the player to score.

One of the most useful aspects of the Projections is the value column. You can sort by this to find the best value (Points Per FPL Million) delivered by players in each position.

With tables for the season and the opening six Gameweeks, you can get a view on long-term and short-term returns and value.

What are these values based on?
The Rate My Team statistical model is a complex beast – it uses historical data stretching back a number of seasons and, of course, specific player and team data. When generating the player values, the model looks at the specific fixture in each Gameweek, assessing the strength of both teams before calculating the likely team goals scored and how these goals will translate to specific player stats. The probability of a player taking part in the match is also a key ingredient – factors such as rotation, injuries and suspensions are taken into account.

When will these Projections be updated?
It’s likely that we’ll update the projections almost every day up until the season kick-off. As we get more data on likely first choice lineups and as the transfer market moves to cast doubt over starters, we will adapt and tweak the model accordingly. A new player, particularly if we anticipate they will threaten a starting role, can have a major impact on the projections and Rate My Team, influencing the projected output of his new team-mates.

The projections will also be updated throughout the season, providing a week by week view of what the model expects each player to score for the remaining Gameweeks to help guide your selections and transfers. We normally update on both Tuesday and Friday in order to build the latest team news into the numbers.

What is Rate My Team?
Rate My team is a statistical model built specifically to assess every player in the Premier League and return their expected values for Fantasy Premier League (FPL) points in a given Gameweek. The system is a complex and thorough one which, of course, plots the probabilities of a player’s time on the pitch, their expected number of goals, assists, bonus points, yellow and red cards, clean sheets, own goals, goals conceded and saves. The strength of the opponent they are facing in a given Gameweek is also crucial; so every team has an attacking, defensive rating, every player a probability of playing a given match with injuries, suspensions and international absence factored in.

How Can It Help Me?
If you’re a member you can use the Rate My Team tool in a number of ways. Firstly, you can use it as a projections tool to predict what specific players will score, on average, over the next X number of Gameweeks. As you’ll see in the movie below, you have a players table that can be filtered by position or FPL cost and which can be extended to show any number of Gameweeks. You can also sort on “Value” to find those players projected to offer the best points per million return.

However, this is just one part of the functionality. Once the season starts, Rate My Team can also analyse your existing FPL lineup, recommend captains, vice captains, your bench and order of substitutes and allow you to model your future transfers. In the second “My Team” movie below, you can preview this functionality in full.

Rather than post your team in the comments on the main site, our members can now enter their FPL code in Rate My Team and it will immediately offer you an appraisal of your squad. Using Rate my Team you can transfer players in and out of your squad and get an immediate appraisal of the impact of that transfer.

Rate My Team – Under the Hood

Mark Mark created the beast. He's now looking to tame it.

@JK - It's possible to get a good team with Aguero, Costa, Hazard and Ivan!

Not one I'm happy with and massive flexibility issues IMO

Like I've said before Jaf, no right or wrong way to play FPL, that's the beauty

If you can make one you like then go for it.

Yeah true! I personally don't like seeing a weak midfield. The prices have certainly been generous to us! 😀

Are you going with Ivan in the end? Aguero too?

          Ivan yes

decided that he's worth it, stick him and forget about that spot unless he gets injured

          Aguero no, nor Hazard atm

Gone down to Fabregas and currently have Costa and Rooney and 1m in the bank so it'll just need 2 transfers to get Aguero GW3 or 4

If he's gonna start GW1 I'll downgrade Rooney or Mata and sell Costa, if not I see no harm in waiting till GW3/4 and you can see which of Rooney or Mata looks the better pick and downgrade the other to get Kun.

Sounds reasonable. Might be forcing yourself into an early hit if Aguero/Hazard hit the ground running.

How risky would it be to go without any Man Utd?

              depends on our form

If Kun is gonna start GW1 then I'll have him from the off

going without Haz is a massive risk given his ownership but I just don't like the look of my team with both of them

Having 2 of Sakho/Wilson/Deeney leaves little room for jumping on a bandwagon in the mid priced area

Strange question I know for this forum, but anyone had any experience with small claims courts?

Gave a gardener £150 for materials with the view of him coming to do some work for me. He never showed up and despite constantly assuring me he would refund me, he hasnt after 2 weeks so have now started the clam.

I know the claim papers go to his address, the only address I could find was by typing his number into google. Used that one on the form. Not heard anything back yet. Next steps?

Get a mate to phone him so that he comes round to theirs to give a quote? He could get his details slyly. At the very least you can be there to have a go at him?

If he has a business i think that would need to be registered somewhere? Possible if it is just a man in a van then he will be a bit more difficult to track down.

    Afternoon everyone,

I am going to be more involved on the forums this year as I first came across this site last year and it helped me to win all my mini leagues for the first time ever (5 years playing).

Initial thoughts on my starting team:

    Schmichael (Ruddy)
    Ivan, Francis, Morgan (Trippier, Senderos)
    Hazard, Silva, Cabaye, Milner (Wanyama)
Wilson, Lukaku, Aguero (Will swap aguero for another forward possibly for first few weeks)

lukaku has some horrid fixtures..also stick an arsenal defender in there. it's gona hurt you most weeks and i don't think players like cabaye/milner are going to make up for it

          1. i'd scrap both. if anything, keep only one
          2. arsenal attack is a must, get a mid in there via a lukaku downgrade, ivan > azp move, etc. the options are endless

In this day and age though defenders have to be able to defend, not just act like a thug. He's going to ruin any chance of a stable high line, the lack of communication from him coupled with his penchant for dropping off deep, and rushing in every which way will cost us points.

He's not able to defend? In the last 10 years, he's our best CB and in that period he's the only defender that won Liverpool's Player of the Season - and that's saying something imo (well, whether our defenders are total crap or he's best at what he's doing).

We still need him, Sakho / Illori would be great next to him.

He'd unsettle the defense like he always has, he's a good player when we play deep, but any kind of defensive cohesion is lost when he's played, it leaves the others in all sorts of compromising positions when he decides to instead of hold the line move and allow gaps to show up. He doesn't have the discipline we'd need now.

I see, so you are saying he's a capable and good defender, but it's not really suitable for Rodgers philosophee; playing high intensity and pressing football? That's a good point actually.

Chelsea away in GW1 is offputting, and its just an awkward price - between all the premium 8.5-9s and the cheaper players around the 6 mark. Still an excellent option, though.

The all out attack chip has an unexpected utility. Rather than use it for it's intended purpose, an alternative theory would be to save it for a week where you can only muster 2 playing defenders. At some point in the season this will happen. Injuries & suspensions will kick in.
Looked at this way, it becomes a "Avoid a Hit on a Defender" chip.

    Steer clear of Southampton folks.

History shows us that Europa League is a poison chalice.
(Newcastle, Swansea & Everton are all prime examples of what can happen here)

The statistics show us that teams who play on Thursday night typically score fewer goals that following league match.

This isn't great news for a Southampton team that only managed 23 goals in the 2nd half of last season.

So, take note that South's 2nd Europa qualifier is on Aug 5th, just four days before they kick-off the season away to Newcastle.

After that, it's every other week from GW5 until the group stages conclude in mid-December or around GW16.

    Caveat Emptor.

That's not entirely true. Over the course of the season they may flop but at the start it shouldn't make any difference at all, if anything it'll mean they're more match fit having played qualifiers throughout the summer.

          > We aren't setting up teams for 38 GWs, and Saints have a great opening run.

They do however, GW1 away to New is 4 days after a Europa league match.

Then it's GW 5 that's next impacted next

So, if two of their 1st five are influenced by European league commitments shouldn't we be weary?

Everton got off to a positively shocking start last year.
As did New & Swans the years before.

Everton had 29 goals in their 1st 20 matches. (Middle / Top 3rd)
          Not bad.

Although, they only managed 3 Clean Sheets over that time too...

Small sample but, Everton *were* amazing defensively the season before & they didn't lose anyone on their backline from the year before.

Wait, playing an away game in Europe turning around, coming home & then packing up to go play in Newcastle 3days later... is somehow better than teams finishing up their pre-season, going home & getting in regular training?

It didn't help Hull, or Everton, or Swansea or Newcastle to start their seaons so why would Southampton be the exception?
