Liverpool’s breathless start to the summer transfer window showed no sign of abating in the wake of Roberto Firmino’s £29 million switch to Anfield. The former Hoffenheim attacking midfielder – who became Brendan Rodgers’ fifth signing of the close season – recently shot to prominence with Brazil in the Copa America, netting the Selecao’s winner against Venezuela in the group stages of the tournament.

Discussing his move with the Hoffenheim official website, the 23-year-old vowed to nail down a starting berth with the Anfield outfit:

“First and foremost, I’m looking forward to the new challenge and I’m excited to see what the Premier League has to offer. Of course everything will once again be new to me at the start. I’m going to have to get used to a new playing style, but I’ll also get the opportunity to improve my game even further there. Obviously I’d like to establish myself as a starter in my new team and go on to celebrate a lot of success at Liverpool.”

The History

A Brazil native, Firmino was born in Maceio and started out at his local club, CRB (Clube de Regatas Brasil). Five years of training ensued, before he teamed up with Serie B (second tier of Brazilian football) outfit Figueirense in 2008. Firmino broke into the senior side in October 2009 and netted eight goals in 36 appearances during his one full season with the Hurricanes, who earned promotion into the top flight.

Firmino’s exploits in South America alerted a number of suitors across the Atlantic, with Hoffenheim shaking off the competition to land the midfielder on a five-year deal. Firmino joined at the midway point of the 2010/11 season and went on to net three goals in 11 appearances from an advanced central role.

Building on this solid foundation, Firmino tallied 11 goals and seven assists across the subsequent two Bundesliga campaigns. The 2013/14 season served up the greatest riches, though, with the Brazilian starlet amassing an impressive 16 goals in 33 league outings, ranking third in the scoring charts behind Marco Reus (30) and Robert Lewandowski (31). In addition, he registered 12 assists that term and bagged six goals in four cup fixtures.

Firmino’s final campaign at the Rhein-Neckar Arena produced ten goals and 12 assists across 36 appearances in all competitions. His laudable domestic displays were rewarded with a debut senior cap for Brazil in November against Turkey, which swiftly led on to his debut goal against Austria less than a week later. More recently, Firmino guided Brazil through to the quarter-finals of the Copa America with a close-range strike against Venezuela.

The Prospects

With the signing of Danny Ings and now Firmino, Rodgers is clearly searching for a solution to Liverpool’s relative paucity of goals last term, given that the Merseysiders chalked up 49 fewer without Luis Suarez spearheading their attack. Aside from netting 33 times in 73 outings over the past two seasons, the Brazil international also created more chances (138) than any other Bundesliga player over that stretch and directly contributed to 45 goals in his previous 66 appearances – illustrating his creative prowess.

As for his potential role within Rodgers’ set-up, Firmino primarily operated as a traditional number ten at Hoffenheim but was also comfortable lining up on the left flank – with Germany’s U21 star Kevin Volland on the opposing wing – or employing his pace as the central forward in a 4-3-3. It’s worth noting, however, that all seven of his league goals last season arrived when he was deployed in “the hole”.

With Raheem Sterling looking set for pastures new, Firmino is likely to be handed a central support role behind a lone striker, though as we saw last season, that could be in a 3-4-2-1 or 4-2-3-1 formation. The former system could see him twinned with Philippe Coutinho in the advanced roles, with Ings or, potentially, transfer target Christian Benteke spearheading the Reds’ attack until Daniel Sturridge finally recovers from injury.

On that note, Firmino’s impeccable injury record would doubtless have been factored into Liverpool’s thinking in light of Sturridge’s recurring layoffs. The Brazil international has missed just one league outing in each of the past three Bundesliga seasons, which suggests he’s made of sterner stuff that the former Chelsea striker when it comes to avoiding knocks and niggles.

It’s worth noting that Firmino and Coutinho were handed three weeks off due to their recent showings in the Copa America and still have another week or so before they link up with their team-mates.

At 8.5 in the Fantasy Premier League (FPL) game, though, Firmino’s reputation clearly precedes him. Given that Coutinho sets you back 8.0 and Jordan Henderson – who could well be handed spot-kicks – comes in at just 7.0 along with another new signing, James Milner, there are certainly more budget-friendly options in the Liverpool midfield.

Nonetheless, Firmino’s record in Germany suggests he could wreak havoc in his new surrounds and afford the Merseysiders a much-needed spark in the final third. Whilst the Reds’ first three away fixtures look tricky (sto, ars, mun), Rodgers’ side are handed four very obliging home matches (BOU, WHM, NOR, AVL) in the opening seven Gameweeks which more than atone for those road trips and could easily see the new boy hit the ground running.

No real talk of Giroud - I think he's a star and quite consistent, and fairly prices at 9m.. Maybe 0.5m over... thoughts?

Wallcott is a very flakely striker though. He is only good against the weaker defences where he can use his pace.
I think most of the walcott talk is wishful thinking.
Walcott hardly played last season even when fit I remember I had him and sold him, then he scored a big haul end of season!
Wasn't there rumours of him been sold at one stage by Wenger last season?

Strong possibility Arsenal will sign a striker this window, and even if they don't, Walcott is a threat.

I just wrote the same thing.

It's strange that Walcott got so much playing time & was then subsequently dropped from the first team... It worries me that rotation could be a risk going forward.

Now, I'd like Giroud him for 8.5mil too but, if Sanchez is out the Frenchman may be the safest route into that attack.

I guess you have to look at as though the premium forwards start at 10.5 and if Giroud manages to hold his spot he'd be almost a steal at 9. Having said that, did Walcott actually steal time from Giroud last season? I still don't think he'll pose THAT much threat to Girouds gametime? Obviously correct me if im wrong?

Sry, I just reread my post & it's muddled.

Sanchez if fit is the safest option at Arsenal.

Going off only last year, I'm *assuming* Walcott remains a rotation risk.
(Could change obv... Maybe he's fielded up top now? Perhaps he nails down a position on the wing? Preseason will tell us a lot there)

So, if Sanchez is out & Wally remains a risk then Giroud becomes the best way in.

No, no.. I got it - you're absolutely right though.. 3 weeks of pre-season to work from. Will be interesting to see how many take the Giroud route (on my radar).

I've said this before but, there's no reason in my mind to spend the extra 5.5mil on Kosc.
I've seen the CBI stats from last year but, if we look back over the past 3 seasons those two are almost idential FPL players.
Also, the chances Mert fails to score any goals again this year are pretty slim.
Each of those guys is good for 2 or 3 a season.

This point may have been raised already but at the start of the season do you have to take Hazard over Fabregas ? Doesn't Fabs do his scoring in the first half of the season ? You could then use the £2.5m to upgrade Deulofeu or Jerome

Agree with your first point, although N'Zonzi is a bigger loss for us than Begovic.

In Begovic we had a player who didn't have the best of campaigns last time around, and with Jack Butland waiting in the wings, he's a commendable replacement.

However, N'Zonzi was vastly underrated and a top midfield player. I hope van Ginkel can become that, but if he isn't then we will struggle.

    Lessons from last season were:

Get two cheap rotating goalkeepers in
Within the defence, target the usual suspects
Get Hazard, Costa and Aguero in

Ignore the new signings if possible, unless their price is such that one cannot resist a punt.

Think the pricing is spot on.

When the prices were first released the majority said that prices were cheap but when you try and fit in the big hitters it actually becomes tough. That's a good thing.

I've not looked at the prices yet, not sure if I'm going to bother this time around. It's all or nothing for me and it's largely time-consuming and, whilst enjoyable, a relatively pointless exercise.

I think he's more at risk, especially if (big if) Arsenal sign a central midfielder. I could feasibly see:

                Coquelin-Ramsey
                Walcott-Ozil-Sanchez
                ---------Giroud

Or even Wilshere alongside Coquelin, with Ramsey on the right and Walcott up front. Could even see Arteta get some minutes as he's captain. I don't see any threat to Ozil.

How do you come to this conclusion? Caz played all but 2 of Arsenal's PL and CL matches last season. Including 2-1 win at Newcastle after 2nd leg against Monaco, when Özil wasn't even in the squad despite featuring both in that 2nd leg and in the international match straight after it. And Cazorla, indeed, played that AMC position of Özil's.

I suppose it just boils down to me thinking Ozil is a better player, I really can't see him being dropped, I think he's going to have a massive season.

It's a bit of a lottery though, I have no real reason to suggest him over the other Arsenal mids.

Cheers all, I was on B but A has become very tempting. Going to mull it over.

Schneiderlin a steal for 5.5mil at United?

With so many MID options it is probably best to avoid til we know more?

Probably means the whole CM department. It was to be avoided in any case, though..

Best to avoid Schneiderlin anyway. Mata, Delay or Di Maria depending on who's in.

    RMT - 100000th Draft

    Butland - Ruddy
    Toby - Cedric - Morgan - (Micah - Turner)
    Haz - Caz - Henderson - Ritchie - (Wanyama )
    Costa - Roo - Giroud

    Top heavy i know....

I was told in an earlier post that Giroud is under threat from Wally, and from multiple people so I will monitor but probably drop giroud.

        He is my differential !
I can always go down to Tekkers to 8.5m and get Wally instead of Caz ?
Everyone fears Giroud won't play because of Wally but I think he's being overlooked a lot !
Injured for most of last season and still scored a handful !

I've almost been talked out of it but thanks to O'Shaughnessy I'll remain monitoring closely. Giroud is a great player and will always seem to find the net when given the opportunity.

I'd be interested to hear your views on this:

    GK: Butland
    DEF: Matthews
    DEF: Mertesacker
    DEF: Morgan
    MID: Walcott
    MID: Hazard
    MID: Depay
    MID: Silva
    FWD: Sakho
    FWD: Kane
    FWD: Benteke

    Subs: Elliot, Albrighton, Rangel, Mariappa

    Thanks!

Is Butlands place under threat now Given has been signed? That's the reason i dropped him from my team.

Slight concern of Mertesacker and Walcott with their gametime under threat as well.

Elliott - newcastle goalie? If so not ideal having a non playing second keeper.

      Fairly balanced side though.

Surely Butland will play ahead of Given?

Hughes said something about Given's experience in the dressing room. It seemed to have a definite backroom emphasis to it. I'm expecting Butland to start - they need to develop his talents, rather than waste efforts on an ageing Given. Still, I'm sure pre-season will give us hints.

Even so, maybe its worth the extra 0.5 to have two 4.5s (given + butland) to guarantee the seasons starts

This year we'll see the return of the power 5 midfield with mid range to cheap strikers being the order up top.

    You heard it here first!

    Lloris | Elliot
    Ivanovic | Cresswell | Olsson | Cedric | Ward
    Hazard | Sanchez | Yaya | Depay | Cabaye
    Sakho | Berahino | Deeney

In start of last season Ulloa, Berahino and Sakho; from September Austin, Berahino, Sakho; from October to December Austin, Kane and Sakho. These would have been tough to beat, and you could have had as big defence and midfield as you wish, with Silva, Hazard, Sanchez, Di Maria, Ivanovic, Terry, Fonte and others in the same team.

I'm sure other combos exist for the rest of the season. And if you play with only 2 strikers, you can have a 4.5 for the third striker and only have two of these. E.g. Austin + Kane would have been a very good attack two for most of the season.

The problem is picking the right bargains. You could have easily ended up with the wrong combo at the beginning of last season and ended up in a lot of bother. It's possible but it's incredibly high risk.
