Liverpool’s breathless start to the summer transfer window showed no sign of abating in the wake of Roberto Firmino’s £29 million switch to Anfield. The former Hoffenheim attacking midfielder – who became Brendan Rodgers’ fifth signing of the close season – recently shot to prominence with Brazil in the Copa America, netting the Selecao’s winner against Venezuela in the group stages of the tournament.

Discussing his move with the Hoffenheim official website, the 23-year-old vowed to nail down a starting berth with the Anfield outfit:

“First and foremost, I’m looking forward to the new challenge and I’m excited to see what the Premier League has to offer. Of course everything will once again be new to me at the start. I’m going to have to get used to a new playing style, but I’ll also get the opportunity to improve my game even further there. Obviously I’d like to establish myself as a starter in my new team and go on to celebrate a lot of success at Liverpool.”

The History

A Brazil native, Firmino was born in Maceio and started out at his local club, CRB (Clube de Regatas Brasil). Five years of training ensued, before he teamed up with Serie B (second tier of Brazilian football) outfit Figueirense in 2008. Firmino broke into the senior side in October 2009 and netted eight goals in 36 appearances during his one full season with the Hurricanes, who earned promotion into the top flight.

Firmino’s exploits in South America alerted a number of suitors across the Atlantic, with Hoffenheim shaking off the competition to land the midfielder on a five-year deal. Firmino joined at the midway point of the 2010/11 season and went on to net three goals in 11 appearances from an advanced central role.

Building on this solid foundation, Firmino tallied 11 goals and seven assists across the subsequent two Bundesliga campaigns. The 2013/14 season served up the greatest riches, though, with the Brazilian starlet amassing an impressive 16 goals in 33 league outings, ranking third in the scoring charts behind Marco Reus (30) and Robert Lewandowski (31). In addition, he registered 12 assists that term and bagged six goals in four cup fixtures.

Firmino’s final campaign at the Rhein-Neckar Arena produced ten goals and 12 assists across 36 appearances in all competitions. His laudable domestic displays were rewarded with a debut senior cap for Brazil in November against Turkey, which swiftly led on to his debut goal against Austria less than a week later. More recently, Firmino guided Brazil through to the quarter-finals of the Copa America with a close-range strike against Venezuela.

The Prospects

With the signing of Danny Ings and now Firmino, Rodgers is clearly searching for a solution to Liverpool’s relative paucity of goals last term, given that the Merseysiders chalked up 49 fewer without Luis Suarez spearheading their attack. Aside from netting 33 times in 73 outings over the past two seasons, the Brazil international also created more chances (138) than any other Bundesliga player over that stretch and directly contributed to 45 goals in his previous 66 appearances – illustrating his creative prowess.

As for his potential role within Rodgers’ set-up, Firmino primarily operated as a traditional number ten at Hoffenheim but was also comfortable lining up on the left flank – with Germany’s U21 star Kevin Volland on the opposing wing – or employing his pace as the central forward in a 4-3-3. It’s worth noting, however, that all seven of his league goals last season arrived when he was deployed in “the hole”.

With Raheem Sterling looking set for pastures new, Firmino is likely to be handed a central support role behind a lone striker, though as we saw last season, that could be in a 3-4-2-1 or 4-2-3-1 formation. The former system could see him twinned with Philippe Coutinho in the advanced roles, with Ings or, potentially, transfer target Christian Benteke spearheading the Reds’ attack until Daniel Sturridge finally recovers from injury.

On that note, Firmino’s impeccable injury record would doubtless have been factored into Liverpool’s thinking in light of Sturridge’s recurring layoffs. The Brazil international has missed just one league outing in each of the past three Bundesliga seasons, which suggests he’s made of sterner stuff that the former Chelsea striker when it comes to avoiding knocks and niggles.

It’s worth noting that Firmino and Coutinho were handed three weeks off due to their recent showings in the Copa America and still have another week or so before they link up with their team-mates.

At 8.5 in the Fantasy Premier League (FPL) game, though, Firmino’s reputation clearly precedes him. Given that Coutinho sets you back 8.0 and Jordan Henderson – who could well be handed spot-kicks – comes in at just 7.0 along with another new signing, James Milner, there are certainly more budget-friendly options in the Liverpool midfield.

Nonetheless, Firmino’s record in Germany suggests he could wreak havoc in his new surrounds and afford the Merseysiders a much-needed spark in the final third. Whilst the Reds’ first three away fixtures look tricky (sto, ars, mun), Rodgers’ side are handed four very obliging home matches (BOU, WHM, NOR, AVL) in the opening seven Gameweeks which more than atone for those road trips and could easily see the new boy hit the ground running.

With Haz already at 55% and Fab at 17% ownership, surely it must be better to start with Fab and catch his early form(possibly) and more importantly a few price rises?

I think the issue is he gets a big score over the course of the season but won't necessarily bag massive hauls. Once he hits his consistency patch, he is a must.

      Why not both?

For me it's hard to not take Hazard...
He's the safest option the FPL has offered us over the past 3 seasons.

A Top 10 scoring FPL player who's *never* rested or rotated & on pens for one of the highest-scoring clubs in the league.

This isn't a knock on Fabs rather, showing us just how valuable Hazard is.

It's not an either / or proposition for me though.
          Walcott & Cazorla
          Mata & Hazard
          Rooney & RVP
          etc...

If we always deny ourselves fielding two players from the same team at the same position we may just be losing out on having another Top 10 scoring FPL option in our squad.

(I don't know the exact FPL scores at Xmas but, I'd wager Haz & Fab were each in the Top 5 mids & Top 10 overall)

Have looked at both Hazard and Fabregas over Fab/Hazard + Costa. Something that I had last season and was very consistent with points. At the moment fabregas allows a better balance to the team/defence.

Koscielny for his attacking threat and BPS (I understand the points have changes slightly regarding pass completion though?)

Yaya + £1.5 is tempting. Suppose we need to wait and see if he brings his 13/14 form back.

@Lucy - is Mane set to be a regular in the Saints' line up this season? How close is the Clasie deal and who is likely to step into Morgan's shoes if Clasie isn't signed in time? Davis?

Mané will be as regular as any. There's always a risk of the odd rotation with internationals and EL fixtures.

Clasie deal could be completed as soon as tomorrow, according to De Telegraaf. As far as the media are aware, an offer of around 10m euros has been accepted and we are now in negotiations with the player. I'd expect it to be done by the end of the week at the latest.

Yes, Clasie was Koeman's captain at Feyenoord, Koeman's first signing when he arrived, and they're said to have a very close working relationship. 🙂 We also have a pretty heavy pre-season fixture list and an EL qualifying round to come before GW1 so he should get plenty of opportunities. Plus, as with most Dutch players, he speaks English so there isn't a huge language barrier. I have faith he'll bed in pretty quickly. Plus part of our pre-season tour will be in familiar surroundings - in fact, he'll be playing for us against Feyenoord if the deal is done in time.

Well, if he has his main man in there, even as a senior player, he is working at improving the team ethos, and spirit. That usually means an uplift in away form ...

That is why Hammers were so crap away - our captain was Nolan ...

Morgan apparently, might need rest. Rooney could be playing centre back, as they're short there.

    Wenger on Sterling:
“It is a good buy for Man City. It is an expensive one but they can afford it.
“We never considered it because he plays in an area where we have plenty of players. We have [Theo] Walcott, [Alex] Oxlade-Chamberlain, [Alexis] Sanchez, [Jack] Wilshere who can play wide, [Serge] Gnabry, so we have plenty of players and he’s a wide player basically, or behind the striker.”

Wenger on United's 2 new midfielders:
“We knew Manchester United would not be happy to finish outside the top three and that they would respond,” Wenger continued.
“They've made interesting buys; they came out of the season thinking 'we have to rebuild our midfield' and they did it by buying two important players, [Bastian] Schweinsteiger and [Morgan] Schneiderlin.
“They're two top-class players, one who goes up now to the top level and one who has done it all. So it should be interesting to see how they mix with the other players in midfield.”

Wenger should basically say that he could not afford Sterling. He had the chance to get Schneiderlin and he didn't take it.
He looks at his rivals getting reinforcements and Arsenal are quiet in the market as usual...

      Or....

"I already have players as good, and better, than Stirling"
"How are they gonna play all those mids"
      "We don't need anybody"...and he doesn't....

The "we don't need anybody" is actually Wenger's favorite answer concerning transfers.

But he doesn't...Ozil, Ramsey, Ox, Wilshire, Sanchez,...blah, blah, blah....Wenger get's unfair criticism for not buying enough players whilst everybody else goes mad with transfers and end up with a squad full of players who aren't up to the job.

Remember LVG rushed into buying Falcao and Shaw last season...Mourinho with Cuadrado, Remy and Drogba...Liverpool with damned near a full team of failures (apart from Can).....eyc, etc, etc....Why is that better than what Wenger does ?

Another DM a must I reckon for Arsenal. Can't see Coquelin alone being enough in that area and not convinced that Arteta and Flamini are good enough as cover.

Aye...maybe...But as always with Wenger it will be a trickle of players and he will have a higher success rate with his players than most of his contemporaries.

fyi, Liverpool training for pre seasonj game. It sounds like the 'first ' team is 4-3-3 with Allen, Milner and Hendo in midfield with Ibe, Lallana and origi as the front 3. Obviously the likes of Can, Firmino and Reus are yet to join the squad

I think once they are all up and running (and that won't be long no matter what their managers say) IMO there will be four must-have players again...

    Aguero
    Hazard
    Sanchez
    Silva

    Plan accordingly....

Can we just get rid of all mentions of "essential" and "must-have"? Kane at 5ish last year was the closest we will get, but a 10-13m player being "essential"? It's nonsense. You can make up their points by spending the money elsewhere. As I said earlier, Hazard will almost certainly outscore, say, Mata. But that is not a fair comparison. The fair comparison would be more like Hazard and Ritchie vs Mata and Fabregas. Suddenly Hazard starts to look rather expensive.

    Lloris / Kasper

    Ivan / Cedric / Francis / O'shea / Martin

    Hazard / Payet / Henderson / Cabaye / Anya

    Aguero / Kane / Bojan

I want an Arsenal defender + I'm not sure about cabaye

    ??????

Don't wish to harsh on this squad, but...
      Fabienski rotates w/Schmiechel--same price
Bassong is better than Martin, but still, rotates w/Cedric
There are better 4.5 players that rotate than what you listed .
      Bojan is not nailed
Aguero sits at least 1st week--that's 13.0 sitting on your bench take Costa or Rooney initially til Kun is nailed, and upgrade Bojan--though he does rotate with Cabaye if he plays.
Maybe Payet> Sahko and then Bojan>J-rod and make Anya> Hoolahan (free kicks and they rotate)
God I'm full of it, but some of that might work. good luck those leave you.5 I believe

    Here's draft #6298429

    Fabianski - Schmeichel

    Francis- O'Shea - Richards - Bassong - Toby
    Ozil - Hazard - Ritchie - Sterling - Wanyama
    Rooney - Costa - Sakho

Gameweek 4 take out Sterling and Costa for Aguero and Hendo

Before you make fun of my defence and why I don't have any CHE/ARS in it I think that the one I have now rotates decently well and saves me a lot to splash the cash on the mids and FWDS which thus enables me to have exceptional captain choices.

Any thoughts or comments are truly appreciated as well as negative feedback. Thanks a lot in advance friends 🙂

      best keeper rotation
back line is dicey maybe look at Francis/oshea> Williams/ Morgan Toby to Targett(rotates w/Bassong) no money involved.I think those are better and purer rotations.
I'm running your front line--nice and no fuss Aguero stuff
What about Hoolahan (fk's) rotates w/Wanayama and lets you get that Azpi/Mert you always wante. GL my man

Given how last season ended, I won't be surprised if this is the year Walcott finally gets to play up front and make the spot his own.

Is this to be the year of the Walcott or is he going to be rotated with everyone else?
