On July 2, Watford announced the signing of left-back Jose Holebas on a three year-deal from Roma. The Greek defender – who started 23 matches for i Giallorossi last term as they finished second in the Serie A – became the fourth new recruit at Vicarage Road this summer, following the capture of centre-back Sebastian Prodl, keeper Giedrius Arlauskis and forward Matej Vydra.

When the move was announced, it seemed that Holebas – as explained in an interview with the Italian press – was caught unaware after both clubs went public with the deal without his knowledge:

“They arranged my transfer without asking me. I haven’t signed anything yet, I have to see the contract first. I don’t know why this has happened, I know that both Roma and Watford announced my transfer, but they’d have to talk to my representatives first. I never said I wanted to leave Roma. I’ll sign after first agreeing to the terms of the contract. I can’t understand what’s happened, I came back from my holiday in Dubai, and everyone started telling me my transfer had been officially announced. I’m in Germany right now, how could I sign a contract?”

The History

After learning his trade at four local non-professional youth teams, the Germany-born Holebas teamed up with sixth division side Viktoria Kahl. Operating as striker, Holebas netted 15 goals in 33 outings, prompting a move to second division side 1860 Munich prior to the start of the 2006/7 campaign.

Holebas made his breakthrough into the senior side the following term, producing two goals and three assists across 19 appearances. At this point, the Greece international was still being deployed as a forward (either on the left flank or in a central berth) and this would continue until manager Ewald Linen shifted him to left wing-back at the start of the 2009/10 campaign. In all, Holebas amassed seven goals and eight assists in 74 league outings for 1860 Munich.

Holebas then followed Lienen to Olympiakos in the summer of 2010. Despite flattering to deceive in the first half of the season, the versatile wide man established himself as a regular starter and went on to tally one goal and an assist in 24 appearances. Over the course of his four-season spell with The Legend, Holebas chalked up nine goals and 17 assists, with his attacking output in the 2012/13 campaign (four goals and eight assists) sticking out as a highlight.

Roma snapped Holebas up on a three-year deal in August 2014, placing him in direct competition with ex-Chelsea left-back Ashley Cole. Ultimately, Holebas came out on top in this contest, earning 23 starts (one goal and assist) to Cole’s 11.

By way of being born in Germany and possessing a Greek-Uruguayan heritage, Holebas was eligible to play for all three nations but chose to represent Greece on the international stage. He featured in all of Greece’s match-ups in the 2014 World Cup and to date has recorded one goal and three assists in 27 appearances.

The Prospects

Holebas has yet to start in Watford’s two pre-season matches so far, which have seen new boss Quique Sanchez Flores roll out a 4-2-3-1 formation, with Ikechi Anya fielded at left-back. The Greek international was afforded 15 minutes off the bench in the weekend draw with Wimbledon and is expected to nail down a regular role once he improves his match sharpness.

Looking at his attacking numbers from last season, Holebas produced a total of 19 attempts on goal and 19 key passes in Serie A – an average of 108.1 minutes for both. Compared to Premier League defenders with 1000+ minutes in 2014/15, that places him ninth (Danny Rose was eighth) for shots and sixteenth (Aaron Cresswell was fifteenth) for key passes.

Like the rest of the Hornets’ likely defensive starters, Holebas comes in at 4.5 in the Fantasy Premier League (FPL) game. A change in the BPS scoring, which is expected to favour central defenders, may persuade some to consider new boy Sebastian Prodl or Gabriele Angell instead, though. The six foot six inches-tall Prodl netted three times in 19 starts in the previous Bundesliga campaign – consequently averaging a goal at a greater frequency (every 581 minutes) than all Premier League defenders bar Chris Smalling (every 495 minutes) last term. Angell, who’s recorded nine goals (including two braces) and seven assists in his two seasons with the Hornets, fashioned the most shots (24) of any Watford defender last time out. Meanwhile, first choice right-back, Juan Carlos Paredes, chalked up four assists, yet his limited goal threat somewhat tempers our appeal.

Elsewhere at the back, the Hertfordshire club’s recruitment of Steaua Bucharest shot-stopper Giedrius Arlauskis places uncertainty over Heurelho Gomes’ starting berth for the season ahead. Watford conceded the fifth lowest number of goals (50) last season – though given they managed just 15 clean sheets (eight at home) – whoever wins the number one jersey may have to rely on save points to boost their Fantasy potential.

Watford embark on a fairly difficult start to the new campaign which may ultimately deter initial investors. Trips to Everton and United in the first five, allied with visits from West Brom, Southampton and Swansea, suggest it’s perhaps best to hold fire with our plans until the schedule takes a turn for the better around Gameweek 6.

Nonetheless, Flores’ side do rotate home and away with Bournemouth over the 38 Gameweeks and with a decent run (AVL, WBA, SOT, LEI, SWA, SUN, CPL, WAT) over the opening eight rounds of fixtures, they could appeal to those looking for a 9.0 defensive pairing in their five-man backlines.

According to the Mirror, Carl Jenkinson has signed a new 5-year contract at Arsenal ahead of his second successive season on loan at West Ham.

Bellerin and Jenkinson will surely be our RB pair a couple of years from now...

Debuchy did nothing to lose his RB spot, so I think he will start the season #1, but there will be heavy rotation. LB is much more secure to Monreal.

Bellerin did plenty to make the spot his own.

You can't say with any degree of confidence that Debuchy is first choice right back.

I think so, though Bellerin will push him hard for a spot. 50 games a season for us, so I guess it will be shared gametime.

    Pantillimon
    Cedric // Koscielny // Morgan
    Depay/Mata // Hazard // Ritchie // Ramsey
    Aguero // Kane // Deeney

Subs: Hamer // Bassong // Wanyama // Oxford

Depay vs Mata will be decided by who has the stronger pre-season.
Aguero is in if Pelle says he's fit to start.

    What do we reckon?

I think this looks really good apart from Ritchie as 4th mid. High risk for a promoted player (although I you-tubed his goals from last season and he looks good) and Oxford? Oh and no sub keeper, that's a shame

think in the 6 mil range hes a good shout, at least until cpl's fixtures take a turn for the better in a few weeks.

Hate rotating keepers, so not too fussed about just the one.

oxford is not ideal, hoping a 4 mil defender makes a name for themselves in pre season!

    Wassup homes

Here's my first RMT of the year

    4.5 + 4.5 (thinking Ruddy + Boruc/Butland)
    Ivanovic Morgan Ward Bassong Richards
    Hazard Walcott Henderson Mane Kouyate
    Rooney Giroud Defoe

    The thinking is as follows:

Four cheap defenders who all have plenty of pitchtime and some potential at both ends of the pitch. Working in two strong rotation pairings - Leicester/Palace and Norwich/Villa.

Then four mids and two strikers I can play every game with Defoe and Kouyate rotating neatly as my seventh attacker.

Well I'm an Arsenal fan and I'm always tempted to load up, especially on Theo when fit. He'd be easy enough to downgrade if not playing. Though even if he's not starting he could well be worth it for some supersub goals.

Fair to say Papiss Cisse is a forgotten man?

    New manager on board.

Last year took him just 1100mins for his 97pts
As a same price (6.5) comparison, almost 1800mins for Sakho to earn 1 point more (98pts)

Good point. Wait and see what are the new manager's plans. Imo things are looking better at Newcastle, and certainly there's enough creative players behind Cissé to help him get enough goals.

      He's not a forgotten man, he's a broken man.

He has the knees of an 80 year old man, and it wont get better.

He's also not a very good player. Good goals ration last season, but he's really nothing special. Not fast, not got good movement, not good in the air, not good technically, and his finishing ranges from brilliant to awful. Newcastle would be making a mistake if they didn't look for a new 9, imo.

        Only concern is fitness

Hard to agree with the rest. He's effective and has done it before

Scored 13 goals in his first (half) year in the league for 100pts in 1300mins
Last year used sparingly and coached by a muppet for last part of the season and he repeated those numbers

Opinion valid but stats say they don't come much more effective when on

When he first came into the league, he was scoring exclusively mental goals. Outside of the boot against Chelsea, left foot bangers into the top corner etc.

He wasn't as good as Ba at his best, and he is a long way from his best now, imo.

Also, his second season was quite awful, and third just worse.

But if that first half of a season was a fluke, no doubt his real level is somewhere between that and the stinking seasons.

His all career non penalty conversion rate is a decent, but not spectacular 16.6%.

Costa was working around Falcao. Engagin centre backs, running channels etc, leaving Falcao to finish everything off.

When Falcao left, Costa developed his game, and did both jobs. (albeit nowhere near as good as Falcao did)

If they reignited the partnership, it would be to the detriment, and waste, of Costa.

Tis not the era of the dual striker.

      Shirt number is irrelevant really.

You could play with a back to front number 69 it wouldn't matter two hoots.

I think Butland has to be one keeper
Best value pick before and we've seen in the past with Bego that Stoke is the right sort of team to do well with a low to mid range keeper

He is a brilliant player. Had as much of a hand as Depay in PSV's Eredivisie win...

so, if you want a 4 way rotation

LIV, LEI/CPL, BOU, WHM is the best for the opening 9 GWs (went that far as it's half way through the wc window) (leaving out sides unlikely to have a 5.0 or less playing defender)

If you wanted only 4.5 or less defenders

    BOU, LEI, STO, CPL

If you want a 5 way (so maybe you'll pay 5.5 for one)

    BOU, SOT, MVC, LIV, WHM

If 5.0 is your limit swap SOT and MCI for SUN and CPL

Atletico Madrid in talks to sign Napoli's Faouzi Ghoulam...

As much irrelevant as this may sound, it probably means Filipe Luis might just stay back at Chelsea, and present that rotation risk, as much as little, to Azpi, which may mean I may go with Ivanovic after all...

Not sure about your goalies. Villa is leaking goals since TS taken over and Myhill may lose his spot once Foster is back which is soon.

Also aguero could miss few games at the beginning

Core looks good, but i think that midfield looks too risky. Don't kniw if ritchie will step up well to the prem, walcott is explosive but might not start, as with depay.

Anybody watching Tattoo Fixers on C4?

Some guy was in the army and was in an accident and had to get his leg amputated. He supports Liverpool and had the bird and YNWA on his leg. After the operation, the surgeon told him that he had to cut away some of the tattoo and now it says you'll never walk! The guy was cracking up though!

If we keep the fee off our minds, he is exactly what City needed, with only one pure winger (Navas) in their squad. Also means Silva could play more at his favorite CAM position...

I don't think he is worth 49m. City overpaid because he is English. But he should do OK. He might get back to the mentality of keep your head down and work hard?

Good to hear you guys think he will do well. 49 million does seem a lot but he has the potential to become a quality player and justify it. Its also an area where City need to strengthen so it seems to be a good transfer, even if overpriced.

Last bit of tinkering for a couple of weeks.

    Schmeichel / Speroni
Azpil / Fonte / Distin (Cathcart / Richardson)
Depay / Sterling (if City) / Ozil / Silva (Schneiderlin - swapping for a 4.5 would give me 1m ITB)
    Rooney / Deeney / Kane.

I know this isn't the question but I'm going to do an FPL-only ranking, for just this season:

      Aguero
      Costa
      Benteke
      Rooney
      Kane
      Giroud
      Lukaku
      Berahino

Austin replaces Berahino if he comes back, Rooney drops back if Tekkers goes to United. Overall Costa's probably in the 8-10th best range.

I would rate Rooney over Benteke if he is guaranteed to actually play as a striker

Messi played right wing last season, and Griezmann up top in a duo.
