On July 2, Watford announced the signing of left-back Jose Holebas on a three year-deal from Roma. The Greek defender – who started 23 matches for i Giallorossi last term as they finished second in the Serie A – became the fourth new recruit at Vicarage Road this summer, following the capture of centre-back Sebastian Prodl, keeper Giedrius Arlauskis and forward Matej Vydra.

When the move was announced, it seemed that Holebas – as explained in an interview with the Italian press – was caught unaware after both clubs went public with the deal without his knowledge:

“They arranged my transfer without asking me. I haven’t signed anything yet, I have to see the contract first. I don’t know why this has happened, I know that both Roma and Watford announced my transfer, but they’d have to talk to my representatives first. I never said I wanted to leave Roma. I’ll sign after first agreeing to the terms of the contract. I can’t understand what’s happened, I came back from my holiday in Dubai, and everyone started telling me my transfer had been officially announced. I’m in Germany right now, how could I sign a contract?”

The History

After learning his trade at four local non-professional youth teams, the Germany-born Holebas teamed up with sixth division side Viktoria Kahl. Operating as striker, Holebas netted 15 goals in 33 outings, prompting a move to second division side 1860 Munich prior to the start of the 2006/7 campaign.

Holebas made his breakthrough into the senior side the following term, producing two goals and three assists across 19 appearances. At this point, the Greece international was still being deployed as a forward (either on the left flank or in a central berth) and this would continue until manager Ewald Linen shifted him to left wing-back at the start of the 2009/10 campaign. In all, Holebas amassed seven goals and eight assists in 74 league outings for 1860 Munich.

Holebas then followed Lienen to Olympiakos in the summer of 2010. Despite flattering to deceive in the first half of the season, the versatile wide man established himself as a regular starter and went on to tally one goal and an assist in 24 appearances. Over the course of his four-season spell with The Legend, Holebas chalked up nine goals and 17 assists, with his attacking output in the 2012/13 campaign (four goals and eight assists) sticking out as a highlight.

Roma snapped Holebas up on a three-year deal in August 2014, placing him in direct competition with ex-Chelsea left-back Ashley Cole. Ultimately, Holebas came out on top in this contest, earning 23 starts (one goal and assist) to Cole’s 11.

By way of being born in Germany and possessing a Greek-Uruguayan heritage, Holebas was eligible to play for all three nations but chose to represent Greece on the international stage. He featured in all of Greece’s match-ups in the 2014 World Cup and to date has recorded one goal and three assists in 27 appearances.

The Prospects

Holebas has yet to start in Watford’s two pre-season matches so far, which have seen new boss Quique Sanchez Flores roll out a 4-2-3-1 formation, with Ikechi Anya fielded at left-back. The Greek international was afforded 15 minutes off the bench in the weekend draw with Wimbledon and is expected to nail down a regular role once he improves his match sharpness.

Looking at his attacking numbers from last season, Holebas produced a total of 19 attempts on goal and 19 key passes in Serie A – an average of 108.1 minutes for both. Compared to Premier League defenders with 1000+ minutes in 2014/15, that places him ninth (Danny Rose was eighth) for shots and sixteenth (Aaron Cresswell was fifteenth) for key passes.

Like the rest of the Hornets’ likely defensive starters, Holebas comes in at 4.5 in the Fantasy Premier League (FPL) game. A change in the BPS scoring, which is expected to favour central defenders, may persuade some to consider new boy Sebastian Prodl or Gabriele Angell instead, though. The six foot six inches-tall Prodl netted three times in 19 starts in the previous Bundesliga campaign – consequently averaging a goal at a greater frequency (every 581 minutes) than all Premier League defenders bar Chris Smalling (every 495 minutes) last term. Angell, who’s recorded nine goals (including two braces) and seven assists in his two seasons with the Hornets, fashioned the most shots (24) of any Watford defender last time out. Meanwhile, first choice right-back, Juan Carlos Paredes, chalked up four assists, yet his limited goal threat somewhat tempers our appeal.

Elsewhere at the back, the Hertfordshire club’s recruitment of Steaua Bucharest shot-stopper Giedrius Arlauskis places uncertainty over Heurelho Gomes’ starting berth for the season ahead. Watford conceded the fifth lowest number of goals (50) last season – though given they managed just 15 clean sheets (eight at home) – whoever wins the number one jersey may have to rely on save points to boost their Fantasy potential.

Watford embark on a fairly difficult start to the new campaign which may ultimately deter initial investors. Trips to Everton and United in the first five, allied with visits from West Brom, Southampton and Swansea, suggest it’s perhaps best to hold fire with our plans until the schedule takes a turn for the better around Gameweek 6.

Nonetheless, Flores’ side do rotate home and away with Bournemouth over the 38 Gameweeks and with a decent run (AVL, WBA, SOT, LEI, SWA, SUN, CPL, WAT) over the opening eight rounds of fixtures, they could appeal to those looking for a 9.0 defensive pairing in their five-man backlines.

    Pick one:

    A) Azpi / Hazard / Kane

    Or

I have Aguero in at the moment until we have some news for GW1

Anyone know how long Foster will be out ? I heard that it would be at least October. If true, a nailed on Pulis GK (Myhill) for 8-10 weeks priced @ 4.5 is a bargain, especially when you can pair him with a non-playing 4.0.

Or even pair him with Guzan, their fixtures rotate perfectly Then if/when Forster comes back, you can limp to your first half WC with him.

I love Doosra, but that is madness. When has a Pulis team ever not performed? He even brought back CPL from certain relegation and conceding 2+ goals a game to a respectable squad by seasons end.

Yeah, Pulis is now a well-respected guy in the game, especially by us FPL addicts 😉

I can see that their fixtures are not the best (tricky home games inthe first 2 months), nevertheless a go at Myhill is not the worst strategy after all.

Only probelm there is you wont have the funds for a decent 5m for the chip. Better off spreading the cash for the chip then get a get 5th mid and upgrade your other players

Still unsure about this new All Out Attack chip.

I know once the chip is played, the chip will not be returned. but if we use the All Out Attack chip to select a 2-5-3 formation and a midfielder or a forward doesn't play, will a defender come in as a sub (and play 3-4-3 accordingly) or will we get a big fat 0 from the missing player?

Going without Azpi initially and playing my All out attack chip GW1 seeming more like a good idea to me now.

    Pros:

    1) Can get off to a good start
    2) Can have a better knowledge of which mid to downgrade
    3) Early WC GW4 so if it backfires wont kill my team
    4) Defenders not huge scores so unlikely to be burned too badly, though could reap the rewards of having a decent mid hit form

    Cons:

    1) Lose a chip which could potentially come good later when people are more informed about the pros and cons of using it
    2) Potentially forcing an early transfer on defense
    3) May tie up funds making it harder to get the 'must have player' GW2 without ditching a player I'd prob want to keep

I considered the bench chip gw1 for that very reason, but ultimately the same problem applies. That's what autosubs are for. I think better to use chips judiciously, like wildcards, when the opportunity or need arises.

Theres that but now I've just thought of one more Pro. You're never gonna get the chance again to set yourself up for this chip. it will take a lot of effort to organise the players and plans with limited appeal. Unless of course your team has a lot of defensive injuries come Christmas it may not be needed at all.

The thought courted to me, too. But I think that the cons outweigh the pros. If it forces you into a -4 for gw2, then it is really not worth it.
The more I think about it, it is a throwaway chip. The odds are decent that the all-out-attack will be of no benefit in most cases.

      1. BeachBadger
        • 12 Years

True but the thought of a -4 is still pretty slim if you're WCing early. I think it just more forces your hand to WC if it backfires lol

Someone also pointed out that you could use the AOA chip in the late GWs, when your TV is (usually) higher. Also that statistically teams score more at the very end of the season.

Having said that, out of the 3 chips I'd say it's the one with the least impact.

    Morning DZ:

Here's my first RMT of the year

    4.5 + 4.5 (thinking Ruddy + Boruc/Butland)
    Ivanovic Huth Ward Bassong Richards
    Hazard Walcott Henderson Mane Kouyate
    Rooney Giroud Defoe

    The thinking is as follows:

Four cheap defenders who all have plenty of pitchtime and some potential at both ends of the pitch. Working in two strong rotation pairings - Leicester/Palace and Norwich/Villa.

Then four mids and two strikers I can play every game with Defoe and Kouyate rotating neatly as my seventh attacker.

The Defoe / Kouyate combo gives the following fixtures:

    lei (D)
    NOR (D) LEI (K)
    SWA (D) BOU (K)
    avl (D)
    TOT (D) NEW (K)
    bou (D)
    NOR (K)
    WHM (D) sun (K)
    wba (D) cpl (K)

Nice fixtures for your 7th attacker, worried that fixtures may not be enough for them.

Yeah, well I'll probably tear it up by gw3, but there's some logic there.

There are some other similar cheap attacking combos I considered, but the more promising players have less promising fixtures and vice versa.

Im not expecting much from them. But they have really good opening fixtures. Im hoping that what been true of keepers remains such in that theyre never far off the points of the others so doesnt warrant much investment

I am normally all over the cheap keepers. The Norwich or LEI 4.5/40 combos appeal greatly.

Currently though i am on Mingolet for 5.0. Have not great faith in Pool defence but will always start, still get some save points and was 2nd (?) highest scoring gk last year.

Im sure i will go back to cheapies eventually!

I dont like gk rotation. to me its-

          4.5 and 4.0
          vs
          5.0 and 4.0

the 4.5 and 4.5 combo always works badly for me.

I usually like rotation mainly cos I feel powerless when my cheapo comes up against Chelsea or someone and I have no exit strategy lol But Norwich up to GW10 look pretty decent

Fair enough, I'm only planning short-term though as I will WC GW4 and see more value in a strong defence than spending the extra 2.5m on Hazard over Fabregas (who I think will do at least as good as Haz in the beginning)

The bench is cheap. Jags is to start with Williams (SWA) or Shawcross (STK) for maybe later. Tinkering with midfield depth vs. Aguero or Hazard $

Heya everyone. I've iterated a bit, and would really appreciate your thoughts on this bunch!

    Courtois / 4.0

    Merte / Moreno / Williams / Coates / Morgan

    Silva / Firmino / Walcott / Richie / 4.5

    Costa / Rooney / Sakho

    > A definite concern is Courtois+Moreno VS Myhill+Azpi... Gut is feeling Courtois, but my head tells me that Azpi could be on for some BPS with his tackling, and Myhill saves more, so maybe that's the thinking man's choice? Unsure.

I believe 4.5/5.0 keepers with lots of potential for save points are better value.

Maybe, but he is 5.5? That puts him up versus the likes of Courtois, not directly against GKs for bottom half teams.

Sorry you can't just claim something so ridiculous and not back it up.

Cech and Courtois will have similar returns over the season, as they both have formidable defences that don't let many shots through.

I agree that there's some unnecessary aggression, but really, what stats? How many saves Arsenal GKs make compared to Che ones? And how many CSs Che keep versus how many Ars do?

Because Chelsea kept 17 CSs versus Ars's 11, and I doubt Cech's saves will make up the difference. And this is before even taking the 5.5 Merte option into consideration!

So I fail to see how Cech is obviously superior to Courtois as an FPL choice.

                        1. Most importantly, quality. Cech is a much better keeper right now. Keep in mind he was in goal for a few of those cleanies. In fact he kept a CS in every match he started last season, playing flawlessly while mistakes from Courtois cost Chelsea a few goals.

                        2. Save potential. Cech will be afforded many more opportunites to rack up save points.

                        3. Regression to the mean. Chelsea rode their luck quite a few times last season defensively. There will be some regression.

Can't disagree with that logic. Cech is quality all around and you can be damn sure he intends to show he's still the best Pl keeper.

Nothing more satisfying than sticking 2 fingers up to the old boss that thought you wasn't quite up to it.

Seriously? His 1 or 2 saves will give ARS the edge to get more points than last season, but I doubt it will serve us any purpose in FPL. More cleanies I can agree, but the likes of Fabiansi, Panti or Adrian can get lots and lots of cleanies too I'd imagine.

Mert will sit now and again? Not on my books.

I agree that Azpi is first choice, but don't you think there is any threat of rotation? He played less than 2500 minutes. My memory on this is patchy, but was he injured for that long?

Although I guess there is no need for rotation at the start of the season, and overthinking is definitely a habit in these parts (myself included here).

Why are you rotating two promoted players? Just get a solid 3rd striker and swap Kolarov to a 4.0 defender.

The attackers are where the majority of the points are at.

Ritchie is a huge risk. We saw Taraabt with similar stats years back and flopped big time in the Prem.

Thanks for the advice. I just don't have love for many strikers this year at those mid prices. Even contemplating playing 3 5 2 to start. Transfers will be taken up getting Aguero Wk 3 and sacrificing a mid.

    My 1st proper Draft.

    Fabianski, Schmeichel
    Toby, PVA, Mings, Skrtel, Morgan
    Albrighton, Hendo, Mata, Ozil, Hazard
    Giroud, Rooney, Murray..

    0.0m in account..

I don't like the defense at all, bar Morgan and MAYBE Skrtel, for a quick 2c. PVA is overpriced IMO, and Toby will be bad value at Tot, especially with Lloris out (not that Vorm is bad, to be fair to him).

Popular GK combo but I see bench points and a bit pricey. I'd prefer 4.5/5.0 and a non-starter.

Not sold on Mings. Probably Skrtel too. Toby is still enigmatic, he's quality but not sure he alone can improve TOT rubbish defending. I wouldn't double up LEI defense not knowing who the manager is.

Nice mid. Not sold on Murray
