In a somewhat contentious move, Tottenham Hotspur fought off competition from Southampton last week to land Atletico Madrid defender Toby Alderweireld.

Speaking to the north London club’s official site in the wake of his transfer, Alderweireld – who had previously looked poised to make a permanent switch to Southampton – cited Spurs’ strong Belgian contingent as a major factor in his decision:

“I’m very proud to become a Spurs player. I’m very happy to be here and I hope to have a wonderful time with this team. From the beginning I knew a lot about it (the club) from Jan Vertonghen, Mousa Dembele and Nacer Chadli. It’s a big club and it’s always been a dream to play at a club like Spurs. I know the players from the national team and I played with Jan at Ajax; we had a central defensive partnership. It’s nice when you join another club that you know a couple of players.”

The History

Brought up in Antwerp, Belgium, Alderweireld trained at the youth academy of local club Germinal Beerschot for five years before making the switch to Ajax in 2004. Having earned his senior debut midway through the 2008/09 season, he went on to become a regular starter the following campaign, notching two goals and a pair of assists in 31 league outings. Playing alongside Vertonghen in central defence, Alderweireld was named as the Ajax Talent of the Year.

In his next three seasons at the Amsterdam Arena, Alderweireld chalked up five goals and six assists across 88 league appearances, with the Eredivisie giants claiming a trio of successive title wins during that period. The Belgium international subsequently courted attention from a host of European clubs in the summer of 2013, ultimately resulting in a move to Atletico Madrid.

With Miranda and Diego Godin forming Diego Simeone’s first choice centre-back pairing throughout the 2013/14 La Liga season, Alderweireld was restricted to just 10 starts (one goal). In pursuit of first-team football, he then teamed up with Southampton on a year-long loan deal prior to the start of the 2014/15 Premier League campaign. In 26 starts for the Saints, Alderweireld greatly impressed but mustered just a single goal in terms of attacking returns.

Alderweireld has represented Belgium at every level and been a regular starter in the senior squad since 2011, notching one goal in 48 appearances. In light of the fact that Vincent Kompany and Thomas Vermaelen are the preferred centre-back partnership, Spurs’ latest recruit primarily operates as a right-back for the Red Devils.

The Prospects

Notwithstanding the recent arrival of Austrian centre-back Kevin Wimmer at White Hart Lane, Alderweireld looks tailor-made to partner his countryman Vertonghen in central defence. Considering that a criticism oft levelled at Spurs’ rearguard last term was their lack of communication and understanding, the duo’s experience playing alongside each other at Ajax should stand them in good stead.

Delving into his Fantasy prospects, Alderweireld’s frequency of attempts (one every 131.8 minutes) was only bettered by Danny Rose (103.7 minutes) among the Lilywhites squad last term, while no Spurs defender trumped his seven shots on target. Nonetheless, given that Rose recorded three goals and four assists in the previous campaign – executing key passes (one every 92 minutes) at over three times the rate of Alderweireld (339 minutes) – the much-improved left-back presents a greater case for inclusion.

If new recruit Kieran Trippier can earn a starting berth in pre-season, his underlying statistics portend a strong attacking output. The ex-Clarets star fashioned key passes (one every 57 minutes) at over twice the rate of incumbent right-back Kyle Walker (125.4 minutes). Furthermore, he carded more than double the volume of successful crosses (91) than Spurs’ full roster of defenders mustered last season (43), illustrating his potential to assist the likes of Harry Kane.

Crucially, though, the 5.0-priced Alderweireld is cheaper than Rose, Trippier and Vertonghen and could appeal to those who reckon Pochettino’s side will prove more resilient this time around. Certainly, considering that Spurs tallied just nine clean sheets, ranked fifth-bottom for goals conceded (53) and conceded the second highest number of big chances (74) over the course of the season, it’s fair to say there is plenty of room for improvement. Pochettino helped Southampton rack up 15 clean sheets in 2013/14 before moving to the Lane, so there’s hope that Alderweireld’s arrival can help remedy their backline woes.

An opening day trip to United, allied with a Gameweek 6 clash against City may deter many from investing in the Tottenham backline, though with three kind home clashes (STO, EVE, CPL) allied with trips to Leicester and Sunderland over that period, we should get an idea of their potential.

Even if he reverts back to pre stellar season, I still think there's value there particularly early on. He's nailed and a decent placeholder should he flop as the worst case scenario.

Am considering him as a placeholder for the unknown quantities/uncertainties in his price range. If he finds his shooting boots everyone will jump on him, at that price, if not we'll have a much better idea of how the Firminhos/Depays/Matas are being utilised and can make an informed swap.

ADM? He may be on his way out let alone first choice at old trafford

Ozil will be good for assists but he isn't among the goals enough for me, i'd take Mane over him.

Mata i don't mind but will probably be out wide which isn't his best position

Looks decent mate. Had 3 shots at the 8.5mil lucky dip I see, potentially could be better balanced in that regard, particularly as I'm unconvinced by Yaya. I'm also not sure I buy into all the Sakho love, as I think the quality of the fixtures is being overplayed (Liverpool, Arsenal and City away in the first six) and there's no certainty he'll be the main man by the time the season rolls around.

      Overall though, a solid effort.

Evening lads, first round of questions for the season, would love some discussion. Bear in mind that the following is a draft with a GW4 WC in mind.

    Ruddy - Rudd
    Azpi - Mertesacker - Morgan - O'Shea - 4 (Targett)
    Hazard - Walcott - Mane - Henderson - 4.5 (Anya)
    Costa - Rooney - Wilson

    1) GKs are a concern. In minimising cost, I've currently got a 4.5/4. With the opening 3 fixtures in mind, the Norwich pair seem the best bet (CRY, sun, STK) over say Schmeichel/Hamer (SUN, whu, TOT). The danger is if I decide not to WC GW4, a rotating pair of 4.5s would be better. Look to find another 0.5, or stick to my guns?

    2) With Sanchez set to miss the start of the season, a punt on Walcott for the opening 3 GWs seems feasible, over the arguably safer 8.5s. More easily to downgrade than upgrade too. Thoughts?

    3) Hendo or Chadli?

    4) Hazard. Damn Hazard. Why must you be owned by over 50%? For me, Fabregas is the better value for the start of the season, for sure. Would do wonders for team balance also. It's the big question, can he be foregone? Will he be in your team?

    4) Would rather someone other than Bournemouth's Wilson, but at that price, for 3 fixtures, he seems the best bet. Yes, no, or stump up the cash for an upgrade?

Finally, as a first-time member this season, I was wondering what was considered a solid score on the RMT tool for 3-6 GWs?

Cheers fellas, good to be back.

      1. Gks are fine. Love a cheap pair like that, will still score well over the season
      2. I dont know in Walcott, in not convinced. Pre season may help, if Sanchez back GW2 then Walcott on the bench?
      3. Hendo
      4. If Aguero is fit i will have Aguero, Fab and Costa. If not Costa, Rooney and Haz

I'm not the best player by any means but after using this site last year I won 2 leagues. Ive used it more already this year and I like your team, reminds me a bit of my own and I'm thinking of adopting a similar wc in gw4 strategy. Not saying that will be any good though!

I've gone for Fab and Mata over Hazard and Hendo for gw1-4. Will then try and bring Hazard in.

Also have a top line of Giroud, Rooney and JROD based on fixtures. I freed up cash by adopting a fully rotating defence of 4.5m and 5m.

I will be bringing Wilson in probably to free up cash for Aguero in the wc.

I don't trust Costa to be honest. Got a touch of the Suarez crazies about him and have concerns over his fitness. Hazard doesn't start all that well (see post further down I think) so am hoping he bombs in the first few weeks and I can then pick him up a touch cheaper as some of the 55% ownership get rid. Fingers firmly crossed!

1)hate the same team keeper, indefensible really 19 road games with NOR? .5 gets a solid rotation pair.

almost my back line O'shea>Williams rotates with Morgan (-.5)

      2) take a 8.5 save the .5 for the above

      3) Hendo now on pens and nailed

      4) I went fab= +2.5 (can save Walcott)

4)no now you would have money look at Yardy with Wanayam for -5

there you have it, IMO GL score is just a #, but 6.5

      5)

Cheers mate. Bearing in mind though - with a GW4 WC highly likely, I only really need those Norwich keepers for 3 games, and they have reasonable fixtures over the first three at least.

not a terrible defense--I couldn't find fix's better for a 4.5. But .5 more rotate him with SOU keeper Steck for a lot longer. Man, I'm hoping to make it to wk 12

      1) I'm going with R/R for the first 10GW at least. Good fixtures.
      2) Walcott or could be Ozil/Ramsey
      3) If you downgrade Walcott you could also get someone like Ayew/Payet
      4) Guaranteed to give 200pts a season. Keep
      5) Keep. It's a punt anyway.

Ivan and Fabregas are often said to start a season well, and the reverse for Hazard. I had a quick look at their stats for the opening four prem games for the past three seasons.

    Ivanovic:

    2014-15: 2 goals, 1 assist
    2013-14: 1 goal, 0 assists
    2012-13: 2 goals, 0 assists

    Cesc:

    2014-15: 0 goals, 6 assists
    2013-14: 0 goals, 6 assists (Barca)
    2012-13: 0 goals, 2 assists (Barca)

    Haz:

    2014-15: 1 goal, 1 assist
    2013-14: 0 goals, 1 assist
    2012-13: 1 goal, 6 assists

Ivan really has started well, although each year his attacking returns have subsequently dried up entirely for months.

Cesc has indeed also started well. Chelsea scored an unusually high number of goals early last season, which helped, and for the previous two years Barca were also scoring an outlandish number of goals. Though cause-and-effect wise you could conceivably interpret that either way.

As for Haz, he's been slightly slow out the blocks the last couple of seasons in comparison(especially considering Chelsea got off to a flyer), but still got on the board, and in 2012-13 had an excellent start.

Just a note on Fabregas in 13/14, I watched the 7-0 against Levante where he got 5 assists, and the defending was appalling, the worst I've ever seen. He wasn't exceptional by any standards.

The thing with FPL is that we're obsessed with patterns being logical. Sometimes I think they're just spooky coincidences as in the case of Ivanovic.

However, I do think there is a correlation with Fabregas being a strong starter.

        Going back a bit further:

        2011-12 (Barca) : 4 goals, 4 assists (!)

        Arsenal:
2010-11: 3 assists + 1 goal. Only started two of those.
        2009-10: 3 goals, 3 assists

Extremely consistent stats, though scewed in Barca years by ridiculous number of goals being scored by the team overall. Even last year at Chelsea the team scored a particularly high 15 goals in the first four, so six assists seems reasonable. Big surprise Haz wasn't more in the points, considering that.

Gomis I think it massively under-rated. Swans don't have Europa this season, nailed on, on penalties. could be a big season for him

How much value do people put into preseason, I only really started playing FPL properly at the beginning of 2014/2015 and I got burnt? Ashley Young and Robbie Brady are some examples.

Entire team swap at half time, games that mean very little to anyone (no passion, avoiding injury etc) - what do you actually take from it?

'' Arsenal forward Alexis Sanchez will miss the Community Shield, and is likely to sit out the start of the Premier League season.

Gunners boss Arsene Wenger has confirmed that Sanchez will start training the day after Arsenal take on Chelsea in the traditional season curtain raiser at Wembley.

That is due to his involvement in Chile's gruelling Copa America campaign on home soil, a tournament which they won thanks to Sanchez's decisive penalty in the shootout against Argentina.

The former Barcelona man hasn't travelled to Singapore with Arsenal, with Wenger deciding to give him an extended rest after the mentally and physically draining challenge of winning a tournament in his home country.

"He'll be back with us on the third of August and it takes about three weeks to competitive," Wenger said in Singapore where Arsenal are competing in the Barclays Asia Trophy. ''

    Right thing to do, totally.

Well done Arsene, maybe you'll think to give him the odd rest during the season too to keep him sharp

Good...Hopefully quite a few will still buy him for GW1....and then sell him....

Looks good. Nice balance, captain options, any complaints are merely preference.

      looks alright
I probably wouldn't have both henderson and chadli in there though. Could mabye downgrade to a cabaye/ritchie/etc to free up some cash

I'd probably downgrade Rooney and upgrade else where, (defence and 3rd striker)

    Hi All,

I have been writing some code to help me find an UBER. I've now built something that looks for the best combination of teams (fixture-wise) over any period.

This information is pretty useless without pricing, so I need to get a view of how much the cheapest nailed on defender from each team is. Can anyone point me at some thoughts/analysis on this?

If you ignore price information, the best combination of teams for gameweeks 1-19 looks something like:

    CHE | MCI | NEW | SOT | SWA

However, the best combination of fixtures over a shorter period 1-8 is more like:

    AVL | BOU | NOR | MCI | STK

I haven't tested any of this, so proceed with caution.

At a glance, I'd suggest something like this might be a cheap option over 1-19:

    CPL | NOR | SUN | SWA | WHM

If we can get a view on cheapest nailed-on defender from each team, them I can build that in.

    Thanks,

    Thomas

I'm fairly sure we have to play each of our wildcards in each half of the season this year. That being said its prob better to look ahead to gw 8 or 10 max.
I worked out over that period the best rotating 5 defenders playing 3 is

Bournemouth, Stoke, Liverpool, West Ham, Leicester.

Check them out all lined up beside each other in the ticker.

Are Benteke owners going to keep him if he goes to Liverpool? If not, who are you going to replace him with?

Am I right that Benteke's price won't change?
