Arsenal youngster Chuka Akpom scores three times as the Gunners open their summer schedule in style. Everton and Stoke grind out a goalless draw, Watford’s Odion Ighalo continues his fine pre-season form, whilst West Brom ship three goals for the second successive friendly.

Singapore Select XI 0 Arsenal 4

Chuba Akpom stole the headlines in Arsenal’s first head-to-head of the Barclays Asia Trophy, bagging a hat-trick comprised of a close-range finish, a penalty and a commanding header. Jack Wilshere also converted from a spot-kick after Mathieu Debuchy was felled in the 18-yard box.

Arsene Wenger named a mixture of regulars and second-string options in his starting XI, fielding Alex Oxlade-Chamberlain (right wing), Alex Iwobi (left wing) and Wilshere (number ten) as the three behind Akpom in a 4-2-3-1 set-up. Francis Coquelin and Mathieu Flamini occupied the double pivot, while Debuchy, Per Mertesaker, Gabriel Paulista and Nacho Monreal manned the defence. Emiliano Martinez earned a rare start between the sticks.

When asked to evaluate Akpom’s role in the upcoming season, Wenger was understandably cautious:

“That’s up to him. How much? I don’t know but I just believe that it’s an encouragement to do well and to work even harder. He’s a young player and it can lift his confidence. The confidence in the dressing room that you sense from the other players is important as well and that can help him. Let’s not forget it’s a friendly. He’s a good talent but he has to work and show that in [the big] games.”

Stoke 0 Everton 0 (Everton win 5-4 on pens)

The Toffees converted all five of their spot-kicks following a goalless 90 minutes against Mark Hughes’ men to book a match-up against Arsenal in the final of the Barclays Asia Trophy. Romelu Lukaku spearheaded Everton’s attack, with Steven Pienaar, Ross Barkley and Kevin Mirallas supporting the Belgian in a 4-2-3-1. Gareth Barry and James McCarthy patrolled the centre of the park, while Brendan Galloway partnered Phil Jagielka in central defence. Roberto Martinez rang the changes at the break, bringing in Leon Osman, Tom Cleverley, John Stones, Gerard Deulofeu and Steven Naismith.

In the Potters’ camp, Mark Hughes chose to name nine of his 10 players who’d returned from international duty on the bench, with Marko Arnautovic the only recruit deemed fit enough to start – the Austrian midfielder proved a menace in the first half operating behind lone striker Joselu. Hughes handed minutes to the likes of Peter Crouch, Marc Wilson and Marco van Ginkel after the break, yet allowed new debutant goalkeeper Jakob Haugaard to play the full 90 minutes.

The Stoke manager was hugely impressed with the Dane’s performance, lauding his dominating presence and keen understanding of the game:

“It was a good opportunity for Jakob to play with the guys and it was a great stage for him to make his first appearance for the Club. The game was played in a fantastic stadium and it will be good for his experience as a young player. He made two or three really good saves for us, showed great presence, good ability and a good reading of the game for such a young ‘keeper. We’re really pleased with what he’s produced tonight

Borussia Monchengladbach 1 Swansea City 1

Swans boss Garry Monk opted for a 4-1-4-1 formation in their opening pre-season fixture, with Jay Fulton assuming the holding role, Ki Sung-yeung and Gylfi Sigurdsson in central midfield, Andre Ayew on the left flank and Nathan Dyer on the right. Up top, Bafetimbi Gomis fronted the attack, while in defence, new left-back Franck Tabanou was afforded a starting berth.

Monk benched the entire starting XI after the hour mark, handing debuts to shot-stopper Kristoffer Nordfeldt and forward Eder. Jack Cork, Jonjo Shelvey and Matt Grimes took to the midfield, with the latter delivering a birthday goal from the edge of the area to secure a draw for Welsh outfit. Eder came close in the dying stages, but the Bundesliga opposition held steadfast.

After the match, Monk admitted it’s all about building up match fitness right now:

“The new players have integrated well within the group, so there were plenty of good things to come from this game. We planned it so that we would play a team for 60 minutes and another 11 for 30. Then we will flip that for the next game against 1860 Munich on Saturday. It allows everyone to get plenty of minutes under their belts. It helps their physical element, which is very important.’’

SC Verl 1 Watford 4

A brace against the fourth-tier German opposition made it five goals in three fixtures for the 5.0-priced Odion Ighalo. The Nigerian striker bagged 20 league goals last term and comes in at 0.5 cheaper than fellow forward Troy Deeney, though it’s worth noting he’s playing out wide for the promoted side. Ikechi Anya netted a volley to extend the Hornets’ lead to 3-0 by the half-time whistle, before substitute wide man Lloyd Dyer scored the fourth with an eye-catching lob following a run from his own half.

Quique Sanchez Flores fielded his troops in a 4-2-3-1 formation from the start, with Sebastian Prodl and Craig Cathcart pairing up in central defence. Almen Abdi operated in “the hole” behind frontman Troy Deeney, while Ighalo and Anya provided the width. Etienne Capoue and Ben Watson filled the defensive midfield berths. Flores made a host of changes over the second period, with new boy Jose Holebas one of three players introduced for the start of the second period. Both Connor Smith and Fernando Forestieri sat out this fixture after suffering minor knocks in training.

Orlando City 3 West Bromwich Albion 1

Callum McManaman’s first goal in an Albion strip proved to be nothing more than a consolation as Orlando – inspired by former Ballon D’Or winner Kaka – fought back to record a comfortable victory. Baggies boss, Tony Pulis, started Brown Ideye up front, with James McClean and McManaman offering the width on either flank. James Morrison operated behind Ideye, with Claudio Yacob and Darren Fletcher sitting further back. Chris Brunt was tasked with playing at left-back, fuelling fears that we’ll be starved of a West Brom defensive option next term. Pulis was unwilling to risk Saido Berahino on the artificial turf after the English marksman picked up a knee injury on international duty with the U21s.

Finally, a reminder that we’re collating all the pre-season action via a dedicated section here as the action unfolds.

For 5.5 Jerome is a bargain third choice striker. Currently nailed on starter with a good string of home games in the opening fixtures. As a Norwich fan, I may be biased, but I genuinely think we offer some decent attacking threat in the opening weeks. I just can't decide which one out of Redmond, Jerome and Johnson I want in my team (head says Johnson or Jerome, heart says Redmond)

What gives Rooney the edge over Kane? If United do sign a new striker, It would surely be safer to go with someone else than Rooney. Thoughts?

Currently is the best option we have on the left (for inverted wingers). But I believe he was converting at an unsustainable level last season.

Still it's between him and Henderson for me. Henderson on penalties and set pieces might just swing it for me

I feel like there are two sets of spurs fans.

The first set are the delusional ones who think we should be in the champions league every season and that Levy does nothing good for the club and should go.

Then there are the other set of fans who realize that we are have the 6th highest wage bill in the premier league and are thus roughly the 6th best team in the league.

There is so much talk about 4th place to get champions league football, but I feel like the league is becoming more and more competitive for that final spot, and thus we should definitely not expect it.

Depay might get used as a striker yeah, I believe LvG has said as much but I think he will start on the left of a 3.

I don't think we'll still own Hernandez by end of transfer window.

Wilson still has a lot to prove, he's not a great replacement for Rooney is he gets injured in my opinion.

You rely on a full time Schmeichel since Hennessey is not sure (at all) to be starter. Thus, what about Hamer as 4.0 to cover Schmeichel injuries?

Midfield is too weak. Schneiderlin is too costly for a 5th midfield (try 4.5 or 5.0) and Payet should be upgraded to a 8.5 Arsenal midfielder.

Just a question: how do you will get Aguero when you will get him?

Was hoping to get some thoughts on playing 2 up front. Was planning to play Costa and Deeney with Falcao on the bench. I play in an intense draft league so thought if I could monopolise one teams goals I should be onto a winner?

Just as a rotation for Costa. It would be difficult just to transfer in and out due to the sick twisted nature of a draft league.

    This Liverpool discussion.....

    –––––––– Migs
    Clyne Skrtel Sakho Moreno
    –––––––– Can
    –––– Hendo – Milner
    Coutinho ––––––– Firmino
    –––––––– Ings/Benteke

Been mentioned that Liverpool won't leave out Coutinho and Firmino because don't have the luxury
But isn't that missing the point?
If they aren't ready physically or will demise badly if they don't rest properly then they CANNOT play surely?

They have 5 strikers after Sturridge (Ings, Balotelli, Origi, Lambert, Borini)
They also have Ibe, Lallana and Allan ready and available

My question is - how far forward will Milner play?

i imagine him and hendo will take turns to join the attack. Still not as often as Chadli 😉

With Can in place there should be plenty of scope for getting forward
Ibe's pace and Lallanas tekkers in wide positions should create room for Milner getting forward as a number 8

Do worry that the team isn't good enough to score a lot of goals tho....

            really?

it's a pretty attacking team. Clyne and Moreno get forward a lot. even Can likes to make bombing forward runs, he did when playing as a centre back last season and is very good at it

I think Hendo and Milner will be a double pivot, alternating going forward.

I wouldnt include Borini and Lambert in the strikers, one is prob leaving and other is useless.

Couple of decent players in the youth team as well who I hope we see a bit of like Teix but not sure if they are ready yet.

        If the front 6 is

        Hendo Can Milner
        Ibe Ings Lallana

Is that enough to make enough chances to make Hendo or Milner a wise investment?

The front 6 when all are fit will be

          Hendo Can Milner
          Cou Sturridge Firm

which is looks very very good

            10 years, 4 months ago

When all fit it's decent but wouldn't go mad about it
Think there will be plenty of tinkering tho, Coutinho is better in no.10 so could well force Milner to the wing if not the bench....

yeah he is better as no.10 but can also cut inside.

I really think that front six is very very good, good enough to get us top4 if Firm can adapt fast to the league. a lot of creativity there and everyone of those players can score.

      I have the same 3!
      feel you.
However my plan is to rotate Francis/Watford-defender,
      and Wilson and Sakho
I have a heavy midfield, however Ritchie will be a regular.

Although it seems too much with 3 B'mouth-players. Have in mind that it seems much as they will start the first fixture (Home to Villa) - But will probably feature alot on the bench. Bounemouth seem to have a very consistent way of playing (like when Swansea promoted) -
They scored alot and had lots of clean sheets last season. And much of they're attacking play goes through these three players who are all nailed, so I think it's a good idea, value for money.
What is the rest of your team, out of curiosity?

        Hazard Ramsey Henderson Ritchie (anya)

You really want him out, don't you. 😕

No chance. ADM + money, at best. But I'd expect rather a money only deal. Unlike ADM who both wants out and is pushed out by the club a bit, Cavani wants to stay, his coach loves him, and the owners want to keep him too. Huge difference.

Cavani wants to stay? What changed? Last time I read an interview he was sick of being played wide to accommodate Ibra.

Personally I have no particular view on the matter. I was just chatting with Ryan.

When was this last time you read an interview and where was this interview? Only thing I can remember to this effect was one year ago, and he was not _sick_ of being played wide, just expressed he wants to play more as CF. Which he did last season. 23 starts as CF. I guess that changed, and the fact that the club prefers building attack around him rather than Zlatan in future. Zlatan may be leaving, you see.

Ruth, he doesn't suit the PL and he doesn't suit the filoshofee. We have a 60m flop and he needs to go ASAP before he depreciates rapidly in value. We can't risk having him for another season.

Yes, I get that about not fitting well at United. Shame really but it makes sense. One wonders why LVG sanctioned the purchase though. Or was it done before he was much involved?

The strange thing is that Mourinho got great stuff out of him as a wide attacker. And Jose usually expects those guys to put a shift in. But that's La Liga, not the same competitive requirement perhaps.

Less time and space in the PL. Thats a problem for ADM when it comes to a filoshofee that demands we keep possession and not give the ball away all the time.

I'm guessing the managerial transition didn't help matters.

I think he's idealistic and will get brought up sharp. All this "modelled on Guardiola's Barcelona" nonsense isn't going to wash in the PL with a mediocre squad like they have.

The only promoted team I expect to survive is Norwich - pragmatic manager, defensively sound, squad with plenty of PL experience.

Watford, Bournemouth +1 to go down for me. I thought Leicester would be in danger till the manager change but Ranieri will improve them. Villa could be in danger with Benteke gone. What else do they have?

Would love some help with this lot, lads.
    Courtois - Hennesey
    Bassong - Oshea - Angella - Francis - Williams
    Hazard - Depay - Walcott - Ritchie - Wanyama
    Costa - Wilson - Rooney

I've gone for this team because if there is an urgent need I could swap Costa & Rooney for Aguero & Kane. I'm not that into the triple Bournemouth even if their fixtures are that good. I'm just not that convinced with Deeney (If anybody could convince me, be my guest!)

Don't like the thought of 3 defenders from promoted sides. Asking for trouble. As is 3 Bournemouth players.

Depay is risky given the options United have at the moment. With no Aguero - I think Yaya is a good shout at that price.

The Saints & Koeman have done very well to secure Jordie Clasie.

I rate this fella, and he is a very able performer (non FFS of course) and will do a job as equal to Morgan imo.

    Great signing

Picking the best FPL players from the big clubs:

Arsenal - Sanchez, far ahead of the 8.5/9.0 boys
Chelsea - Hazard, Costa a close second
City - Aguero, moderately ahead from Silva
Utd - Rooney, moderately ahead from Mata

Now time for some of my ratings as FPL prospects - just my opinion

    Sanchez - 8.5, Walcott - 7, Caz/Rambo/Ozil - 6.5
    Hazard - 9, Costa - 8.5
    Aguero - 10, Silva - 7.5
    Rooney - 8, Mata - 6.75

Just my opinion but swaying towards having the quartet of Aguero, Costa, Sanchez, Mata. Who are you selecting from the big boys and why?

I think Depay could also come into the reckoning if he looks nailed after pre-season

Didn't LVG say he will be 'eased in'?

Sanchez is more debatable than that for me. First half of last season, with Ozil and Giroud crocked, he was a monster. When they came back for the second half, his output tailed off considerably and you most certainly wouldn't want to pay 11.5m for his points during that period.

Silva is a prime example of short memories on here. This time last year he was dismissed as an assists only guy, and mostly just assisting the assister. One big season of goals doesn't make him close to Aguero in my opinion. There's every chance that he over-produced on the goal front last season and will return to 'normal' again.

Mata is a hard one to assess. He scored a lot of goals from very few shots last season. I can't really work out if that's just his way, because he waits for prime opportunities before shooting, or if he got a bit lucky. In any case, the United midfield looks very hard to call and I'll be waiting for more evidence before I dive in.

a fair assessment Roscola. With Cazorla on pens he is starting to excite me. Silva i agree i should not have put as close to aguero, but in a realistic world who can have both? Mata i think is a gem of a player. A consistent FPL gold mine.

Caz is definitely on my radar, but i can't shake the idea of Wally, especially with Wenger all but ruling out Sanchez for the opening few games.

I do actually genuinely think Sterling will shine at City but again, I'll wait for evidence.

Haz is most definitely going to get the most points of all Chelsea's players this season, but I'm still considering starting with Fabs because of the price difference. Having Haz instead of Fabs killed me early last season.

Mata is definitely an absolute superstar footballer, so naturally gifted. But bear in mind that for fantasy purposes he got just 4 goals and 1 assist from his last 20 PL games for United. He has yet to show his Chelsea FPL form.
