Tottenham Hotspur defensive midfielder Etienne Capoue joined Watford in a club record deal on July 6, becoming the Hornets’ fifth pick-up of the summer transfer window.

Speaking on his move to Vicarage Road, the Frenchman admitted the switch will afford him an opportunity to play regularly after he struggled for minutes at White Hart Lane:

“I’m very excited to come here to join the club and to participate in this big project. For me it’s an opportunity to play. I need to play and to prove my qualities on the pitch, and I think Watford is the best thing for me. I hope I’ll bring my technical passing football, and my experience in the Premier League, and I hope we’ll do very well this year and stay in the Premier League. We need some experience because the Championship is very different to the Premier League. I’m looking forward to playing games and I’ll be focused every weekend, because our goal is to stay in the Premier League.”

The History

Born in Niort, a commune in Western France, Capoue began his footballing education at local outfit Chamois Nirotais. Stints at the youth academies of Chauray and Angers followed, before he teamed up with Ligue 1 club Toulouse in 2005. Having impressed for le Téfécé’s U18 side, Capoue was rewarded with a professional debut in 2007.

Capoue – playing alongside Moussa Sissoko – became a permanent fixture in Toulouse’s midfield the following season, chalking up one goal and three assists in 32 league appearances. Such were the calibre of his performances, Capoue was named as the Ligue 1 Young Player of the Year. The France international missed just 15 league fixtures in the subsequent four seasons, tallying 12 goals and six assists in the process.

In the summer of 2013, Capoue was one of seven new faces to grace White Hart Lane in the wake of Gareth Bale’s departure to Real Madrid. Despite earning a starting berth from the second Gameweek of the campaign, injuries and a lack of favour restricted the physical enforcer to just 12 appearances (one goal, zero assists).

After stringing together an unbroken run of 11 starts at the beginning of the previous season, Capoue found himself marginalised thereafter. In light of Tottenham’s surfeit of central midfielders – particularly with the emergence of academy players like Nabil Bentaleb and Ryan Mason – he was deemed surplus to requirements, failing to even occupy a squad berth in 25 of the remaining 27 Gameweeks.

Having carded an impressive number of caps for the France U18s (four), U19s (14) and U21s (13), Capoue was handed his senior debut during a friendly against Uruguay in 2012. Since that date, the 26-year-old has gone on to tally a further six caps, with his solitary international goal arriving in a World Cup qualifier against Belarus.

The Prospects

Given his impact in the Premier League so far, it’s fair to say that Capoue will struggle to convince Fantasy managers of his potential. Sitting in front of the back-four in Tottenham’s 4-2-3-1, the Frenchman posted the joint-lowest shooting accuracy (14.3%) – alongside Paulinho – of any Spurs midfielder last term, having hit the target with just one of his seven attempts at goal. His deep-lying starting position also engendered a similarly unimpressive shot frequency (one every 133.9 minutes), with only Benjamin Stambouli (249.5 minutes) offering less in the final third.

A price of 5.0 in the Fantasy Premier League (FPL) game, whilst undoubtedly budget-friendly, is still dearer than fellow new boy Valon Behrami (4.5), who is expected to be stationed in the double-pivot alongside Capoue in a 4-2-3-1. Bearing in mind that Switzerland international Almen Abdi also comes in at 5.0 and tallied nine goals and two assists in the previous Championship campaign, despite making just 28 out of a possible 46 league starts due to injury, it’s fair to say that Capoue’s appeal is limited. Nonetheless, with regular pitch time looking assured at Vicarage Road, he will at least be given the chance to rediscover the goal scoring form that saw him thrive in his final season in Ligue 1.

The knock-on effect of his arrival could also see the Hornets’ defensive prospects take an upturn. Capoue’s average of 2.4 tackles last term was bettered only by two Tottenham players, whilst his 2.8 interceptions per appearance was also third for the north London club and superior to any midfield team-mate. Given that he also produced more clearances per match (2.3) than any Spurs midfielder and it’s fair to say that his ball-winning ability will be key for the promoted side.

As for Watford’s early-season prospects, their schedule throws up some tricky fixtures in the opening four Gameweeks, with trips to Everton and City on their agenda. The Hornets’ schedule alternates well with Bournemouth, though, and twinning Capoue with a Cherries asset would hand you a decent streak of eight home matches (AVL, WBA, SOT, LEI, SWA, SUN, CPL, WAT) to kick off the campaign with.

Schmeic and Butland have great rotation for first half of season and well priced. New BPS will favour both, with Butand going to be the busier but more chance of CSB for Schmeic.

Having silva doesn't compensate the loss of aguero in your team. Plus, the. Weeks were silva scored his most points were when aguero got injured. With aguero playing it dampens silvas effect.

kun is good enough to adapt to any system except if he is not allowed to go into the box-when he went searching the ball toward the end of the european adventure.
I just see bony as close provider/support bringing results and concreting the link between mid and forward-citeh will miss milner more than they believe.
-my point is pelli needs to be more brave and crafty to beat maureen and the skills of arsenal(not wenger the manager-he's no tactical genius)

He could well start, just can't find a place for him in the team. Coquelin is a better CDM, Cazorla is a better CM, Walcott will surely start the season is a better RW, Ozil is a better CAM. Only place left is Sanchez's left, and from what I have seen, Ramsey really struggles there. Welbeck/Wilshere or even Ox is better there.

Real will manage with Casilla this year, and then get him easily for free next year. Not the worst idea if it comes off, and I don't see ANY other destination for DDG once his contract ends.

I see yaya as being a better prospect becuase of his penchant for set pieces... he'll keep hitting FK's & will be next in line for pens after Kun. Sterling will be all open play contributions I'd imagine plus the uncertainty of settling in (i.e. could be great, could take a while, just hard to know, depends on his personality & how he integrates with his new teammates etc... I think he had alienated himself in the liverpool dressing room so there's no guarantee he'll slot straight into City, if any of the big personalities in that dressing room get a hint that he's big time charlie, they won't be long putting him in his place I'd imagine)

I don't think you should have a City mid for the opening three fixtures 🙂 . Everyone is saying that Everton will improve on last year , West Brom will be tough to break down with Pulis in charge and Chelsea will park the bus . Everyone also thinks Aguero will miss the opening fixture . I suppose I am suggesting none of the above or D if you will 🙂

If you are going to ignore me I would go with A because ordinary player like Milner and Navas were able to thrive on the right for City and Sterling could be a great option when the fixtures improve , Southampton have nice fixtures and Wally will probably get a chance this year

As Ruth says, more important to get different price points for flexibility as the season starts. Otherwise hits are inevitable.

    10. Ruth_NZ
      • 10 Years
      10 years, 4 months ago

I think you have this wrong if you want me to be honest.

One of the needs in squad construction is to have players at different price points, especially the attackers. That way if a player at that price level hits great form or a run of great fixtures you have an easy switch with 1 FT.

You are looking at all mids between 8.0 and 9.0 there. I think 11.5, 9.0/8.5, 8.5/8.0 and 6.5/6.0/5.5 would give you more flexibility for the same overall budget.

      1. Lucy.
        • 12 Years
        10 years, 4 months ago

I definitely appreciate that logic. It is indeed more flexible. But I don't really see the point of picking just for flexibility, if I like players at this price point?

        1. Ruth_NZ
          • 10 Years
          10 years, 4 months ago

Because you can more easily be reactive when things actually start happening on the pitch.

Who you like right now is all in your head. Who I like is all in my head. In 3 weeks time we will be dealing with what is actually happening and who we like will shift pretty fast. So I am talking about constructing a squad to readily cope with that.

          1. Lucy.
            • 12 Years
            10 years, 4 months ago

Ok... Trying to stay open minded to what I appreciate is sound logic. So what would you advise if I'm pretty set on going without Hazard to start with?

              • 10 Years
              10 years, 4 months ago

Well I don't have a thing about Hazard, I'm going without him too. But I'm 4-3-3 so it's a different structure entirely.

Mind telling me who your forwards are?

              1. Lucy.

I think what's caused the problem is what I've done with Aguero funds - the above midfield is my 'if Kun isn't fit' midfield.

                I had:

                Fabregas, Mata, Ozil, Ritchie, Wanyama
                Aguero Rooney Sakho

                As my Aguero-ed front 8.

So for an Agueroless front 8 - I did Sakho->Wilson and Aguero->Costa, to do Ritchie->9.0. And that's screwed up my flexibility, I guess?

Any ideas? Thanks for your help.

                  Well, seeing as it's you...

I am planning my route to GW4 carefully. So, the nearest comparison based on your structure/players would be:

Cesc Mata/Ozil Mane Ritchie 5.5 (Johnson)
                  Costa Rooney Lukaku

That's GW1 with 0.0 in the bank and play 2-5-3.

GW2 Lukaku to Sakho, 1.5 in the bank.
GW4, Johnson to 4.5, Rooney to Aguero. 0.0 in the bank.

That's the kind of thing I have planned. But in more general terms, yes I think it's what you have done with the Aguero 2.5 that is unbalancing things.

                  1. Lucy.

Thanks! I'm not sure I'll go with what you've put but I'll look at balancing things better with the excess cash, instead of pouring it into one player.

I really appreciate the effort. If there's ever anything I can do to help you, let me know. Though as I'm not very strong on strategy, that's unlikely.

No, don't go with my ideas. I was just offering that as a sample. FPL is an intricate thing and one essential is that you play in a way that suits your nature as a person, not someone else's.

I am a quite strategic person and I also have a tendency to go against the flow. So I will need to allow myself to do that in how I play otherwise I'll get frustrated. I could never play a safety first ownership based cleverly structured and tightly disciplined game like Triggerlips, however successful it is. Just wouldn't suit me.

However I have to moderate my personal preferences with what works. I won't just go against the flow for the sake of it and I have to check my impulse to do so.

Where I am weaker is in speed of reaction to players hitting form when that doesn't fit my strategy. I have to learn to be more quickly reactive tactically and hope to improve in that this season.

Tell you what - you help me with that and I'll try to help you with strategy when needed. Deal?

                Ah, OK, Costa Rooney Wilson.

Well, assuming you'll want Aguero in GW4 you'll need to find 2.5 by then. So one of your mids will get downgraded to a 6.5/6.0/5.5 at that time I guess.

It's really difficult for me to comment further because I don't know your strategy and it's probably different to mine. I'd just say that 4 mids from 8.0 to 9.0 will be inflexible if it remains that way long term and I wouldn't think it's ideal myself.

There should be at least one 4.5 at Stoke. We will need to wait till nearer the time to know which but I suspect Wollscheid. In addition it seems that Shawcross has ongoing problems with his back so possibly both Wollscheid and Muniesa.

If Hennessey moves to West Brom all of my problems would be solved 😕
