Manchester United landed their second major coup of the transfer window last week, snapping up Bayern Munich midfielder Bastian Schweinsteiger on a three-year deal. The 30-year-old – who will become the first ever German footballer to play for the Red Devils – insisted that United was the only club he’d considered joining:

“I have thoroughly enjoyed my time at Bayern Munich, it has been an incredible journey and I didn’t take the decision to leave lightly. Manchester United is the only club that I would have left Munich for. I feel ready for this new and exciting challenge in what I regard as the most competitive league in the world and I am looking forward to working with Louis van Gaal again. I will never forget my time at Bayern Munich and I would like to thank everyone at the club and the fans for the great memories.”

The History

Born in Bavaria, Schweinsteiger cut his teeth at local clubs FV Oberaudorf and TSV 1860 Rosenheim, before joining Bayern Munich’s youth academy at the age of 13. Having turned out some impressive performances for the reserves in the third tier of German football, he went on to make 14 appearances for the senior side in the 2002/03 season as Bayern claimed the league and cup double.

Schweinsteiger started out at left-back but was quickly shifted into midfield by head coach Ottmar Hitzfeld. Over the course of the next two campaigns, he tallied seven goals and 11 assists in 35 starts, operating predominantly from a left midfield berth in a 4-4-2 diamond set-up. The versatile Schweinsteiger then went on to produce 13 goals and 31 assists in the following four seasons before the appointment of Louis van Gaal in the summer of 2009 saw him assigned a deep-lying defensive midfield role.

The next four years harvested 16 goals and 17 assists in 115 league outings, with his best attacking output coming in the 2012/13 season, where he netted seven times and chipped in with five assists. After Bayern claimed the treble (Bundesliga, German cup and Champions League) in 2013, Schweinsteiger scooped the German Player of the Year award.

In his first season under former Barcelona boss Pep Guardiola, Schweinsteiger was limited to 22 starts because of tendon irritation and went on to accrue four goals and five assists. In the subsequent campaign, he managed just 15 starts due to injury, bagging five goals and four assists in the process.

Schweinsteiger has been a stalwart for Germany since his senior debut in 2004 against Hungary. With 111 appearances (23 goals) to his name to date, the 30-year-old midfielder ranks fifth on the list of Germany’s all-time most-capped players. The crowning moment of his international career undoubtedly arrived in the 2014 Brazil World Cup, when he played every minute of the knockout stages en route to the trophy.

The Prospects

Although he’s versatile enough to play in a number of roles across the centre of the park, it seems more likely that Schweinsteiger will be utilised in front of the back-four by Van Gaal once again.

Considering that the Dutchman employed his former charge as an enforcer during his managerial spell at the Allianz Arena, one might expect him to do the same at United. Van Gaal – in an interview with the club’s official site – said that Schweinsteiger’s ability to dictate the rhythm of a match will be vital:

“Bastian is, of course, no stranger to me. I worked with him during my time at Bayern Munich and I am truly delighted he is joining Manchester United. His record speaks for itself; he has won every honour at club level and was a major part of the successful Germany World Cup-winning team last summer. Bastian is the ultimate professional and there is no doubting his talent and his ability to control games. He brings a wealth of experience and is an excellent addition to our squad.”

Michael Carrick excelled as a holding midfielder in the latter stages of the previous season, which might make Van Gaal loath to sideline the former Tottenham recruit. Indeed, United’s switch to 4-1-4-1, set-up upon Carrick’s return from injury in Gameweek 29, sparked an upturn in their performances – the Red Devils subsequently went on a four-match winning streak, beating Liverpool at Anfield and Manchester City at home.

In the event that Carrick retains a starting role, Van Gaal is likely to plump for a 4-3-3 formation, with Schweinsteiger and Morgan Schneiderlin patrolling the centre of the park. The same formation could see Schweinsteiger adopt that deeper role, with Schneiderlin and Ander Herrera playing further ahead. Given his wealth of options further forward, though, Van Gaal could opt for a 4-2-3-1 set-up, allowing Schweinsteiger and Schneiderlin to partner up in the double-pivot.

At 7.0 in the Fantasy Premier League (FPL) game, Schweinsteiger looks fairly priced in light of his attacking output last term (five goals and four assists in just 1362 minutes), but Bayern’s complete dominance of their league has to be factored into our assessment. The Bundesliga titans averaged 70% possession and fired 17.4 shots per match, whereas United managed 61% and 13.5 respectively. Furthermore, his injury record over the last two seasons is something of a concern, having started only 37 of 68 league outings.

Although you’d expect Schweinsteiger’s scoring opportunities to be diminished, then, his underlying stats are promising. The German’s conversation rate (17.2%) trumps that of any United midfielder bar Juan Mata (27.3%), while his shot accuracy (38%) is second only to Marouane Fellaini (44.4%) among the Red Devils midfielders that fired off at least ten attempts. With the likes of Mata and Mephis Depay priced at 8.5, and a number of viable attacking contenders such as Nacer Chadli and Jordan Henderson at 7.0, though, it remains to be seen whether Schweinsteiger can force his way into many managers’ plans in the season ahead.

United’s start to the new campaign throws up a couple of tricky home match-ups against Tottenham and Liverpool, yet Van Gaal’s men will fancy their chances after winning both corresponding fixtures 3-0 last term. United’s schedule between Gameweeks 2–4 (avl, NEW, swa), meanwhile, could serve up a wealth of attacking returns if their new signings acclimatise quickly, though whether the German is one of the main benefactors is another matter entirely.

What are people's plans for the various chips?

For me, I'm wildcarding in the first international break, so I'm building a team with great fixtures in the first four games, all of whom I'm happy to play. Then using bench booster GW1 and all out attack GW4. Strikes me that it will be rare to have a time when all your players have good games and most people will have a budget fifth mid or third forward so will rarely be comfortable playing him with the chip. Seems those chips can only be used effectively if you have a deliberate strategy.

Obviously save the captain one for a double gameweek.

    Thoughts?

Starting 11 plus 4 subs = 15. If all play two games in a DGW that's 30 instances of point scoring.

Getting 15 DGWers in during the weeks leading up to the DGW has got to weaken your team surely? And if you use your WC to do it you'll have to use the weeks afterwards to fix it. Any more than 9 or 10 DGWers seems counter-productive to me.

Whenever I am looking at a player I always look at his PPG. I think its a truer reflection of there potential rather than total score. But PPG favors those who play 90 mins and are never taken off or brought on. So i decided to calculate PPM(points per min) instead. I find it very useful.

    Top 5 mids PPG
    Hazard - 6.1
    Silva - 6.0
    Sanchez -
    Fabregas - 4.9
    Siggy - 4.8

Top 5 mids PPM (players of interest)
    Walcott - 0.114
    Silva - 0.072
    Sanchez - 0.070
    Hazard - 0.069
    Chadli - 0.66

Walcott and Chadli do well here as they were often used as subs which diminishes their PPG. Walcott has a crazy PPM of 0.114 way ahead of any other player.
Walcott only played 447 mins and you may say its skewed due to his final day hatrick, but if you ignore that game he still has a PPM of 0.082.

    Other mids of interest
    Mane / Adam - 0.064
    Oscar - 0.062
    Mata - 0.060
    Ramsey - 0.058
    Siggy / Tadic / Fab / Yaya - 0.057
    Cazorla / Ozil - 0.056
    Sterling - 0.052
    Henderson - 0.050
    Countinho - 0.048

Bare in mind a 0.01 difference (if played out over the entire season) = a 34 point difference.
So if Walcott plays all 3420 mins next season he will score 390 points!
If players like Walcott / Chadli / Mane / Mata can start a regular 90 mins they could be great value.
Also makes Chadli look a lot more appealing than Henderson.

Huh? No, in Chadli's case it's a reflection of how awesome he was last season. And it sheds light on the ridiculousness of his 7.0 price tag

Sorry though you were implying he is not a good pick.
If he can start regular he could be the budget midfielder to have this year.
Far better than Henderson for 7

but that's the thing, most players won't play every single minute.

Walcott would be amazing if he played every single minute but he won't - Wenger will rotate the squad constantly and it's likey he'll get an injury. Most other players bound to get injuries and suspension as well as rotations. Poor form in some matches is also a factor.

So personally i believe total score is a truer reflection because it shows the amount of points they're capable of getting in the time they play. Looking at their total score for last 3 seasons should show whether they are consistent, getting less points or getting more points every season.

Ive said it and il say it again it only applies if you think that the player will play regularly.
If you look through the list and think Chadli or Mane for example will get plenty of game time then i think your on to a winner.
I initially did it to compare Chadli and Henderson.
I expect both to play majority of the time so if I apply this then Chadli is the far better pick.

I guess it goes down to personal preference then

I like to just see the total scores because for me that's what truly reflect each player's potential.

But i do still look at stats like these and this is a good post so you deserve that up vote

No Harzard or Aguero, but I've got top 7 coverage across the board with a rotating 3rd defender with okay fixtures.

I need to keep an eye on starters (particularly 3rd defenders and J-Rod), but I like the balance. Any blind spots?

Tough question - who's more essential out of Sanchez and Aguero? I have a team with those 2 and Hazard but it weakens everywhere else.

If it comes down to strong alternatives, Aguero has Costa and Sanchez has a variety of 9.0m & 8.5m mids. Who, in your opinion, is best to go without?

I've not seen much love for Silva even though he was a points machine at the end of last season. Is this a price thing? Or an Aguero doubt thing?? I love the wee fella.

having him and Aguero takes up so much money. Just Aguero is good enough for me

So this is a follow-up from what I posted yesterday: http://www.fantasyfootballscout.co.uk/comment/10549220

Do note that I haven't included Aguero in this post. Deciding on whether to have him in a team is a separate discussion onto itself. He could be fit in to either squad at the expense of downgrading a few players.

Before you read what I'm about to say next, I'd recommend you read that post. Essentially, what it says is that we may have been undervaluing premium defenders while going for the "sexier" forward picks.

Upon looking through it further, I realized forwards were the place we were getting least value. Based on these, I came up with some experimental teams for this season. These teams easily scored a 120 on an RMT, going as far as 126 (in the 5-6 combinations that I tried). I'm convinced one could find an even higher combination as well.

Before I begin, let us compare this team with a more "standard" team:

    Schmeichel / Myhill
    Koscielny / Ivanovic / Huth* / Yoshida / Mings*
    Hazard / Walcott / Henderson / Mane* / Wanyama*
    Costa* / Benteke* / Jerome

By no means is this the best "standard" team. However, I do think it's fairly template. You could suggest minor changes around here, but I the overall level / quality of the team would be similar (just personal preference/ratings would change).

In this, we have spend 9.0 for Goalkeepers, 2 premium defenders with 3 defenders @ 4.5m, 2 premium mids + 2 semi-premium mids with Henderson and Mane with a 4.5m bench player, 2 premium forwards with Costa/ Benteke and Jerome as a bench option @ 5.0m.

You would usually play either a 4-4-2 or a 4-3-3 depending on which of Ritchie/Ighalo you wish to play.

Now, keeping what I was saying earlier in mind, take a look at this team:

    Schmeichel / Myhill
    Ivanovic / Koscielny / Terry* / Cedric* / Yoshida
    Walcott / Hazard / Henderson / Mane* / Silva*
    Wilson* / Deeney* / Jerome

In this, one would be playing a 4-5-1 on most days.

If for a second, we compare the changes we have:

    Huth
    Mings
    Mane
    Wanyama
    Costa
    Benteke

    Becoming:

    Terry
    Cedric
    Mane
    Silva
    Deeney
    Wilson

I personally think there's a solid argument for the second case.

Now, keeping a few other things in mind:

    a) Captaincy

Probably the biggest debate here would be captaincy. In the first case - my premium options for captaincy would be Costa, Hazard, Walcott.

In the second, I would have Silva, Hazard, Walcott. It's not a huge drop-off according to me.

    b) "Form"

The best argument I heard from people was that having a expensive front 7 allows you to move them about based on form. I would argue that there is more options for "form" in the midfield area than the forward area.

In midfield we have: Yaya, Silva, Sterling, Henderson, Coutinho, Milner, Firmino, Sanchez, Cazorla, Ramsey, Ozil, Walcott, Hazard, Fabregas, Oscar, Depay, Mata, ADM, Mane, Eriksen, Payet, Siggy. That's a total of 22 players.

In the forward department we have: Giroud, Benteke, Costa, Lukaku, Sturridge, Aguero, Rooney, Kane. That's a total of 8 players.

Way I look at it, the second option lets you have a solid backline who will give you consistent points - while rotating your front line to maximize your returns there.

I'm still not sold on this - but it's worth consideration. Looking forward to a good discussion on it (rather than the usual "too much on defenders" or "get better forwards").

It's more fun to have premium forwards though. Watching Aguero score a hat-trick is a lot more fun that watching 3 premium defenders keep clean sheets.

You get 5 defender slots, yet you choose to use only 3. I've always played a 3-4-3 (or very occasionally a 3-5-2) myself. However, the numbers I looked into seem to suggest it may be better to play more defenders.

We're choosing to bench too much cash most weeks in our 451 formation.
It's a minimum of 1.5mil more than if we chose a more *standard* lineup.
Pounds = Points & when we only have 100mil to spend that's especially the case.

While I agree with what you're saying - I think it bears into mind that each position has different baselines.

For example, I can get a cheap defender in 4.5m. I can get a cheap forward in 5.5m.

No matter what defender I get, I would have to spend 4.5m. No matter what forward I get, I would have to spend 5.5m. While I spend more in the second case, they are both exactly the baseline values.

As an example, I am able to add Terry over Benteke in the second case while saving on 1.5m. Terry would outscore Benteke and is cheaper. However, when you consider that Terry is 2.5m above the "baseline" defender while Benteke is 3m above the "baseline" forward - they become much closer.

Baseline values, what are you on about here?
There's no need to over complicate matters...

Simply put, any team (regardless of formation) with an extra 1.5mil on the pitch every week would have a greater *expectation* of scoring more points over the course of a season.

On a per game basis, yes. Def > Fwd.

Hey, do what you want. I have no need to persuade you to have a team like mine.

Captain options can be just as comfortably accommodated in a 4-3-3 as in a 3-4-3. In fact it's probably easier.

                  I already told Mesut that.

                  However 4-3-3 with 2 x 4.5 bench midfielders and a 2 x 4.5 defender rotation doesn't suffer from that problem.

And, the drawback here is our team's flexibility.

Very difficult to find room / transfer in those mid-tier mids with a set-up like this.

                Mings and Benteke.

                (Its not even this simple)

A baseline is simply the cheapest starter available. That's the least you have to spend to get a person who starts a game in that position.

For the Terry thing - PPG is what I'm seeing.

              > A baseline is simply the cheapest starter available.

Baseline comes from the idea in baseball.
A runner must be within 3ft of the line or he is considered 'out'.
A baseline is a *normal* player not just some player.

Regardless, we're getting lost here .
I don't care to quibble over what a baseline player is as it has nothing to do with the matter at hand.

        Cheers.

I'm thinking that the worst case would be that I wildcard out quickly.

Forward line can easily be changed to Sakho, Ighalo, Jerome as well (that's what I have right now).

And it'll take 2 transfers for me to get a premium forward in at any time - Silva + Jerome to 4.5 + Costa is possible.

I agree with everything you wrote apart from one major thing.

Costa, Hazard, Walcott is a terrible captain selection.

I will be going with Aguero, Rooney and Hazard, and hence your entire argument falls to pieces as it cannot compete with the sheer cost of these three. Sorry.

Look at all these RMT's though. There appears to be a shift towards scrimping big time on attack which is a dangerous move to make in the uncertain preseason. Sure switch midseason when you have midfielders firing on all cylinders, but not before.

Fair play. The difference there is Aguero (I can simply swap Costa for Rooney). The question is, how does he affect the rest of your team?

Assuming Aguero gets you 1 PPG more than Hazard (last season he was 0.4 PPG ahead so I'm assuming a worst case scenario here). That gives you an extra point each week.

How does the rest of your team look though? I'd be happy to compare the two.

          Krul/Speroni

          Ivan, Azpi, Mings, Ekspan, Souare,

          Hazard, Hendo, Mane, Anya, Tettey

          Aguero, Rooney, Cisse.

(This is 0.5 over, but you get the idea)

Budgets wrecked, a lot of fillers, but I should make it to christmas with solid captain scores.

I'll consider ditching Hazard for better balance too.

So the difference between the two squads would be:

            Mings + Anya + Aguero + Cisse

            to

            Koscielny + Fonte + Mertesacker + Silva

(also keeping it as 0.5 over).

I feel the second can easily cover up the gap and more, no?

No, you took Aguero out which weakens the captains score and thus the overall team score.

Also I'd back Aguero and Cisse to destroy Mert and Silva.

I don't like the idea of planning to use a FT on my defence if I don't have to.
Sure we could WC beforehand but, if not then I like to be set up long term.

Solid front 3, weak in midfield.

Cazorla and Coutinho are inconsistent points scorers especially with Caz playing a deeper role. Factor in the unknown Depay and your midfield is one big gamble.

Clichy for a 4.5 defender and Young to a 4.5 midfielder means you can upgrade one of Caz/Cout and also Bolasie.
