Following the signings of defenders Sebastian Coates and Adam Matthews, Sunderland made Dutch international attacker Jeremain Lens their third new addition of the summer transfer window last week. The 27-year-old arrives on Wearside from Dynamo Kiev on four-year deal for an undisclosed fee, believed to be around £8 million.

After completing his move to the Black Cats, Lens admitted that the chance to reunite with compatriot Dick Advocaat once again proved too good to turn down:

“I know Dick Advocaat very well from my time in Alkmaar and PSV. It will be the third time I’ve worked with Dick and at PSV I reached my best goalscoring season – 15 in the league – so I hope I will do the same now and score even more. Everybody knows he is a very good head coach and he also gets the best out of the players, and in my personal opinion he is a good coach for me as well because he can reach the qualities I have and make everything come out so I hope it will happen again.â€

THE HISTORY

Lens played youth football for Spartaan, FC Omniworld, Ajax and AZ Alkmaar, before making his professional debut for the latter during the 2005/06 campaign.

After failing to score in 14 outings for the Cheese Farmers, he was sent out on loan to NEC in 2007/08, where he produced 13 goals and five assists in 37 league and play-off appearances. Returning to AZ the following year, he was restricted to just eight league matches (one goal, one assist) after undergoing foot surgery. The 2009/10 campaign was far more successful, with Lens’ 12 goals and eight assists from 32 matches earning him a move to PSV Eindhoven.

The pacey attacker would spend three seasons at PSV, racking up 34 goals and 37 assists in 96 league appearances before joining Dynamo Kiev in the summer of 2013. Lens was less prolific in the Ukraine, scoring 10 times and chipping in with 15 assists in 49 outings, although he was part of a successful league and cup double last season.

After narrowly missing out on selection for Holland’s 23-man squad for the 2010 World Cup, Lens had to wait until August 2010 to make his international debut, although he did find the back of the net in a 1-1 draw against Ukraine. He was a regular member of the Dutch squad under Louis van Gaal, and made four appearances during the 2014 World Cup, although he only started once. Lens has made 30 appearances for Holland, scoring eight goals.

THE PROSPECTS

Given the outlay, it’s fair to say that Lens will be a key player for the Black Cats in the season ahead as he looks to reproduce his best form under Advocaat.

The Dutchman’s arrival is clearly designed to improve on the meagre 31 strikes that left the Wearsiders just three points clear of the drop zone in 2014/15. Whilst Advocaat acknowledged his compatriot’s versatility, the Black Cats boss admitted that Lens’ arrival should see him feature out wide in a three-man frontline:

“We have to think about whether we will stick with the 4-3-3. But Lens is not really a player for a 4-4-2. He can go in between the lines and likes going past his man. We don’t have that with (Connor) Wickham. Connor works his socks off, but he doesn’t go past players, he’s a different type of player. Lens is one who likes to chase players. He can play left and right. He can even play as a striker, sometime I used him like that at PSV. But left or right is his best position because he is always a threat there. We haven’t had that.â€

With Lens looking nailed-on, then, and adding a much-needed injection of trickery and pace, it looks like Emmanuel Giaccherini, Adam Johnson, Will Buckley and Connor Wickham will compete for the other wide role, though Wickham could be utilised through the middle, where he would vie with Jermain Defoe, Steven Fletcher and Danny Graham for the lone striker role.

As mentioned above, Lens’ creativity will also be vital for the Wearsiders, having served up at least ten assists in four of his last five seasons. Last term, left-back Patrick van Aanholt led the way for assists (five) at the Stadium of Light club, with the Black Cats midfield managing just 15 assists between them.

Given his pedigree – and the possibility of playing as a second striker – it’s no real surprise that Lens has been handed a price tag of 6.5 in Fantasy Premier League (FPL), making him the most expensive Sunderland player in the game. That places him alongside the likes of Crystal Palace pair Yannick Bolasie and Yohan Cabaye, and with the Eagles a much more attack-minded outfit following the appointment of Alan Pardew, Fantasy managers may take some persuading to invest in Lens until there is some evidence of improvement from Sunderland in the final third.

Certainly, the opening schedule has smiled kindly on the Wearsiders and sees Advocaat’s side face only two of last season’s top seven in the first ten Gameweeks. With clashes against Leicester, Norwich, Villa, Bournemouth, West Ham, West Brom and Newcastle over that period, we should get a fair idea of Lens’ potential in the tricky mid-price bracket, though for now, many will feel the Black Cats’ defence – which served up 13 shut-outs in 2014/15 – may be the better value option to begin with.

    Is Hazard worth the 11.5?

Think back to the beginning of last season when Fabregas was providing consistent returns (he was averaging .9 assists per match in the first ten gameweeks!) almost regardless of being home or away. In the meantime, Hazard was scoring more goals, however he was only scoring a goal every 200 (whereas Fab averaged a goal every 800) or so minutes and was very poor away from home. Only in the second half of the season did Hazard significantly outperform Fabregas, who usually tapers off during the second half of the season.

Now, one cannot simply forget Hazard's tantalizing form during the mid/second half of the season, but one also has to remember his subpar performance during the last couple gws when Mourinho wanted to secure the league win. What I'm trying to say is this: Hazard's subpar (for his price at least) end to the season means that he is not coming directly back from the 11.5 worthy form he had in the mid/second half of the season. Thus, Fab, due to his consistency in the first half of seasons, is imo the better pick of the two.

Yes, Fab is not as explosive as hazard, and Yes, Fab (as usual) also ended the season with subpar returns, but is this worth spending 2.5 million more for Hazard??? That 2.5 million could mean the difference between a Rooney and an Aguerro or a Huth and an Ivanovic or a Puncheon and a Walcott. These types of upgrades (at least in the first half of the season) bring (at least in my opinion) better returns than picking Hazard over Fabregas. Not to mention that a portion of this extra 2.5 mil could also be placed itb to offer more flexibility.

That being said, I do have Ivan, Fab, and Costa penciled into my team so as to lessen any risk of not owning Haz. This combination will cover (In the sense that they will either be assisting or be the end of an assist) a significant portion of Hazard's returns, while I can always downgrade costa to a Benteke or Lukaku to free up funds for Haz (if he starts producing massive hauls).

Eh, he was very tired at the end of last season. Clocked a lot of minutes. Just because Fabregas started better last year doesn't mean the exact same thing will happen this year. Not saying it won't, just pointing that out.

But you may as well get Haz himself and ship Fab and costa if you want to cover his points.

Also, Haz provides one of the best captaincy options in the game which you haven't covered.

The problem is he is so expensive that he doesn't stand alone as a pick. The real question is can Hazard and a 6.0/7.0 cheaper midfield pick outscore two 8.5/9.0 midfoeld picks....or....Can Hazard and a mid priced fwd out score an 8.5 mid and premium fwd.

You need to factor how many extra points he gets you when you confidently put the armband on him.

Hard to captain the likes of Ozil, Mata, Fab, etc

As a Newcastle fan, I'm surprised to see so many getting Cabaye in their teams. His last 6 months up here masked an inconsistent previous 2 years. His corners are shocking, he keeps getting silly yellow cards for clumsy kicks and he's very much a MotD player.

And this was before 18 months on the bench at PSG. Now that he's splitting set-piece duties with Puncheon, he has even less appeal to me. In many ways, he's overrated.

No way i'll drop Henderson 🙂

Which keeper? Maybe 9.0 combo? Extra 0,5 would enable to me to bring Tekkers for Lukaku.

The biggest problem i see here is no money ITB - possible Aguero transfer won't be possible without hits probably. No idea who should i drop though, Darmian's first that comes to mind.

Get Wilson in for Deeney, atleast for GW 1, cuz promoted side against good everton defense at goodison .......

      1/2
      4/5
      3/5
      2/3 = 10/15

      Divide that by 1.5:

      6.7/10

1/2 is because you either need to downgrade fabianski to 4.5 or schmeichel to 4
4/5 because not liking fonte, other 4 defenders are good
3/5 because payet is a punt and arsenal double up. Also no hazard or sanchez
      2/3 because of deeney

What is everyone's opinion of spending as little as possible on the defence, signing players that tend not to play which prevents defenders from hitting negative points?
I'm thinking of doing that, changing my formation to 3-5-3 and beefing up the midfield with the extra funds available from trimming the defence.

What are your opinions on this?

Hey guys, would love an opinion or two on my current line-up!

    Ruddy-Rudd
    Azpi-Skrtel-Darmian-Huth-Mings
    Walcott-Sterling-Mané-Depay-Richie
    Costa(c)-Benteke-Deeney

    some comments:
    - keepers is to much of a guessing game for me at this stage so going cheap, might go for rotation on wc

    - I want 3 stable defenders but also 2 nice rotating 4.5 picks as subs

    - My midfield might be a bit risky and exposed to rotation but I have a correct bench so like the risk/punt. and I LOVE pace and goal threat on my mids (makes PL w-e much more fun)

    - Richie and Deeney for the rotation + excitement of newcomers

    - I don't care where Benteke plays, the guy is a huge talent

Hazard is the sort of pick you put in from the off and leave as you know he'll be up there come the end of the season plus at his price he could be hard to get if he looks like he's hitting form

But there's so much value in the 8-9m midfield range, it's incredible what you can do with the 2-3m saved by not getting him

    1. Funkyav
      • 16 Years

The other thing with Hazard is that if he has a couple of quiet weeks to start wth then his price will undoubtedly drop so it might be risk worth taking..

I've got a plan for Aguero that involves ditching Mane or Theo

But Cesc would potentially allow me to keep both and get a better 3rd striker than Deeney to go with Costa and Rooney
